God constantly challenges our expectations of who he is and how he’ll act. Many of us feel cheated because our “good” prayers weren’t answered or were answered but not in the way we wanted (read: expected). Yet we need to understand that God is different than the world, different than our knee-jerk expectations; he is higher than our thoughts or our ways. He is God! This means we need to sit still and listen to that one small voice because He doesn’t need to shout to be heard…that’s the world’s way and it’s just noise and bluster. Seek the small, still voice.

Adam & Eve… the first humans. They had it all. Then they were presented with a lie that they believed and resulted in the fall of mankind. Then God shows up on the scene, they hide and He asks a very important question: “Where are you?”
There is an ending to this story, and it might not be one you’re expecting. First, the possible good news: everyone will live forever. Second, the possible bad news: everyone will live forever.
The cross is more than just a means to a human execution. It represents a transaction. But who paid and for what? More importantly, at least to us, why?

Every story has a beginning and it should be noted that the story of reality, as presented by the Christian worldview, does not start with the Christian...or any human for that matter. It starts with God.

The underlying intent of James's letter to the church is that faith works. That genuine, saving faith reveals itself in the way we live, act, think, and speak. Today we hear James's closing remarks regarding the seriousness of faith.

James warned the rich who oppressed and exploited the underprivileged that riches would amount to nothing in the end. Instead, the humble and righteous would prevail.
Our view of the future greatly influences where we place our assurance. James urges us to humbly view all of our days as being under the sovereign will of the Lord.
In living our lives, we can follow worldly wisdom that’s false or godly wisdom that’s true. We must examine every thought and deed by the Lord’s truth, the Word, and by no other standard.
Our words can be either a blessing or a curse to the people around us. Believers must learn to control their tongues and to use their words for good, not evil.
Our passions and desires are at war within us, and we must fight against them. Pride, boasting, and divisiveness mark worldly people, while humility, obedience, and repentance mark godly people.
Works don't need to be ADDED to faith but rather genuine, biblical faith will inevitably be characterized by works. Faith trusts God, and faith obeys God. Works is a life of loving God and loving others.
We can't settle for an impure, defiled religion of self-interest. James warns the early church, and the church of today, about not just knowing...but following the teachings of Jesus.
This is the message of Christianity: that left to ourselves, we can’t and don’t please God. But God has made a way for us to be adopted into His family, to gain inheritance and to bring Him pleasure through Jesus Christ.

We all want our lives to matter. It’s the reason we do the things we do. We chase promotions and leadership positions because we want to make a difference. We send our kids to college, hoping they get a good job and make lots of money, so that they, too, will make a difference.
There’s nothing wrong with wealth or influence, but those things alone won’t change the world and they aren’t what we were made for.
If you think Jesus was a great leader and teacher, but find it hard to believe in his resurrection, you’re in good company. Even his disciples were skeptical. In the first episode of 2021, Mike and Daniel unveil the name change for "Talking Branches", as well as unpack the notion that our earthly status can neither save nor sustain us.
Sometimes we think that because of our situation, we couldn’t ever experience hardship: money, influence, power, position, leverage, etc. “That could never be me.” But that isn’t true. There is only one “status” that matters...
We like to tell people all about what is wrong with our situation. We like to tell God about it too. But to complain is to forfeit our opportunity to grow and make a difference.
In an effort to avoid tension, we often avoid people. But that is the opposite of being better for it. We often have to address the mess and move toward people, not away. Jesus moved in, he didn’t pull away.
Going through difficult situations is inevitable. But we have the opportunity to choose whether we are better for it, or not. What story do you want to tell?
"Ready or not, believe it or not, here I come. I’m coming for you because I am for you." Belief is how we move in God’s direction. He has already moved in ours.

The Bible contains writings from more than 40 authors spanning 1600 years, with eyewitness accounts supporting the narratives found within. Jesus's life alone has more historical, corroborated evidence than most historical leaders we learn about in school. Make reading the Bible a regular part of the rhythm of your life.

Mary & Joseph found themselves in a less than ideal situation when it came to Jesus’ birth. The normal response would have been to give up or be driven off course. Instead, their response paves a roadmap for our own lives and circumstances.
We all want to make good decisions in life. If we don’t have a good understanding of who we are then life can seem confusing and the decisions we need to make are that much harder. So before we can move forward, we need to gain an honest perspective about where we are now.
Maybe the simplest thing we’ve ever learned about God is also the most complex: God is love. It’s a hard truth for us to understand because we’re influenced by so many other views of Him. So how does it work exactly? And what do we do with that transforming love once we recognize it?
Volunteering makes a difference. When you serve with a nonprofit, you help them accomplish more as well as communicate value to those they serve. The name Be Rich comes from 1 Timothy 6 in which Paul tells a young leader named Timothy: "Command those who are rich in this present world...to do good, to be rich, in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." (v 17-18).
Chances are good that if you're reading this, you're in the 1% club. By international standards, you're rich! Of course, you may not feel rich, but the truth is it's time to start giving while you're living because what you're holding is molding! This month we're going to encourage each other to Be Rich by being extravagantly generous. After all, our extravagant generosity toward others is the most appropriate response to God's extravagant generosity toward us.
Perhaps the most important question we can ever ask and seek to answer is, “Who is God?” As we strive to understand His nature, character, and how we fit into His narrative, what we think about Him can greatly affect the relationship we can have with Him. So what do you think about when you think about God?

Whether it’s pride or stubbornness, we can often find ourselves in a situation that we thought we could handle... only to discover that we were in way over our heads. It isn’t just situations, but we can find ourselves struggling to carry the load that life brings us. We often think that we have to carry the load on our own. We think we have to do it by ourselves. But God says something very different.
Throughout the course of church history there have been varying degrees of emphasis on either faith or works. In fact, we often answer the question, “How do I know if I am right with God?” with one or the other. The answer we often give is either “I am a good person”, or “I believe in God.” Neither answer is truly a complete answer by itself.
No one wants anyone to tell them what to do with their money. We don’t like it because we want to hold onto our money so we make sure we don’t lose our security, provision, comfort, or power. We hold onto our money and our treasure out of fear that if we forfeit our treasure, we will forfeit one or all of the things listed above.
Rules often feel as though they are restricting our freedom. When our parents told us no, we often felt like they wanted to control us, but in many cases, they were protecting us. However, we often respond to control in one of two ways. We either respond legalistically, which is an effort to leverage the rules for our own personal benefit, or we take the antinomian approach, which is to explain away the need for rules.
No one wants injustice. If we could snap our fingers and get rid of it, we would. But what is justice to begin with? People do not always agree about what is just, and in fact, use the existence of injustice to say God is either not just or not present at all. While it is true that getting rid of God eliminates injustice…it also gets rid of justice right along with Him because there is no justice without God.
Perhaps you or someone you know has thought that Christianity is an exclusive club you have to apply to join, check the right boxes of belief, and even learn a new language before you can get in. Maybe you've felt that until you do that, you are in a probationary period...so be careful not to disqualify yourself!—All too often, we think we need to believe or behave before we can belong. That is putting the cart before the horse. It is the wrong order. And it isn’t how Jesus did it.
It's so easy to focus on what is wrong with our lives. After all, the problems we see in ourselves are real. But will we ever be able to achieve better if our focus is on the symptoms?

Religion strives to control someone's behavior before allowing someone to belong. To dictate that in order to belong someone must believe first. We can put too much weight into what others say and think about us. Social media, other Christians, those who don’t believe in Jesus—everyone has an opinion. Worse, we can be called a hypocrite, crazy, Jesus Freak, etc. We get attacked by our friends, our family, other Christians, Satan...anything to distract us from recognizing we are made on purpose with a purpose.
How you treat yourself says a lot about how much value you believe you have. When our footing is shaken and the lies and myths we whisper to ourselves begin to overbear and rule over our identity, what can be done to cure our insecurity?
We all want to get somewhere with our lives. We set goals, take actions, try to move the ball down the field. Yet over and over again we find ourselves sidetracked because we don't know who we are now...let alone in the future. How do we answer that question though? Should it be set upon what the world thinks or something deeper...more true?
We've spent time building habits and gaining tools to see us through the next 5 years living a life more devoted and closer to God and the ideal He has for us in this life. But what does God want us to do with all of that?
In 5 years we want to have a solid relationship with God; living in His will, and experiencing all that He has for us in this life. But how do we get to that point with God? Is there a correlation between our human relationships and the relationship we desire with God?
Jesus says too much about money and our resources for us to ignore it! We are commanded to be generous and encouraged to be wise in how we approach managing our resources.
Without a roadmap, how will we know how to get to where we are going? Our values, our mission in life, our purpose is nothing but good intentions until we know the route to get there.
Without connecting with God, you can’t know Him or His plans for your life. You’re missing something if you are missing God. Wisdom comes from God, so connect with Him through prayer.
We don’t know what we don’t know until we know it. We may not be aware of our greatest weakness. It means we have a blind spot. There may be something we need to change that we don’t know about. There may be an area we need encouragement in, but we can’t see it. This week is all about surrounding ourselves with people who can help us get to our 2024 vision.
In the next 5 years, you will be a different person, in a different place, with new experiences. You can change on purpose or you can allow life to control your change. In essence: you can do a lot of good or a lot of damage in just 5 years. So fill in the blank: "In the next 5 years, I want to _____."
We get offended when we aren’t invited to things. On the flip side, if we invite people and no one shows up, we get offended. Meanwhile, the God of the universe came to earth and wasn’t invited to be with His family and was rejected by His people. How would you react? How did Jesus react?
Timing is everything. Car breaks down on the way to an important meeting: perfect timing! Kids get sick just before vacation: perfect timing! It seems that life can be full of timings that ruin everything. But what if each and every moment was ordained by God for you to use? How does your view change?
We have a tendency to focus on the now. Now likes to bully us into thinking it is more important than forever. It's louder, in your face, and distracting. Later, on the other hand, includes eternity, our Heavenly father, and relationships. There are two kings at war; whose side are you on?
The time for sitting and waiting is over. Jesus is calling you—NOW! The first step to a life with God is one of obedience in baptism. Accept Jesus as your savior and trust him. Accept Jesus as your lord and obey him.
Let's get back to the beginning and examine the basics. We are building a church you can bring your friends to. Or your family. Or your neightbors–strangers–yourself...you name 'em! All so that they can experience the love and truth of Jesus.
The heart is to reach people who are far from God and to draw them near. Are you okay if people who love God don't love what you do to bring people near?
The work was started by God, continues by God, and will be completed by God. Be encouraged and lean into Jesus as Holy Spirit changes us, and those around us, from the inside out.
We can't just decide to change. The effects don't last or we can't even get started. But there is a "better" ready to be had. God's best is in store for your life, just let Holy Spirit in to do His work. Cheesy line: To be well, He must indwell!
Let's unpack some of the aspects of Holy Spirit's character. A good place to start is knowing some of the names of Holy Spirit because they can provide insight into His character and qualities.
Holy Spirit: No other subject of theology or aspect of the Christian faith is more confused, misunderstood, or even forgotten. Let's fix that!
The party is always for someone...but they aren't the only ones who benefit when we celebrate. If that was true, no one would go to parties! When someone that was lost is found, the celebration is enormous and you're invited to the party too!
Who do you follow? Jesus, over and over again, asks us to do the simple: follow me. So again, who do you follow?
Trust can be a loaded word. Some trust easily, some not at all. Yet, when it comes to God, we can make it very difficult for ourselves to trust that he really will be there for us.
It's the season to get back into the rhythms of life: school has started, vacations are over. Today you'll find some common sense steps to "building a church you can bring your friends to...so that they can encounter Jesus".
Jesus didn't just live into his "gifting". He did what was necessary. Become a table tipper!
The enemies primary concern is to rob us of our purpose: the future and relationship we can have with God. We are tricked and trick ourselves into attaching our purpose and value into temporary things...things that can be taken away. Seek the permanent.
We often wrap out identities and self-worth in with the accomplishments (and failures) we experience in this world. But God has something very different to say about our worth.
Find out how Lucifer uses our sinful nature to keep us on a path away from God and how we can turn that trajectory around. We don't have to be slaves to sin any longer!
Strongholds are areas in our lives that the enemy (Satan and his minions) have set up shop to convince us that we are worthless, can't be healed, and won't be accepted by God. Don't listen to him! Jesus is the spiritual battering ram to our strongholds. Turn to him and find out just how badly the war went for Lucifer...

The call to follow Jesus is more than following one man. It is an act of adoption: chosen by God to join his family as an heir. Will you heed the call?
There are a ton of barriers and walls in our lives that need to be torn down so that Jesus can have an impact in our lives...but God also erects walls to keep us safe, to help us grow, and even to provide safety for others.
Life can present with challenges...in the midst, you find yourself with a hard choice: do I follow God's plan for my life or do I not. Unlocking the potential your life holds could be as easy as just saying YES to God.
The world is a distracting, hot mess. It's so easy to lose focus and get sidetracked by the everyday "look at me"—"over here"—"buy this"—"try this" events we are constantly inundated with. Where should we focus though?
Are you hot or cold for God? Perhaps you find yourself, as all of us do at some point, lukewarm for the relationship. It's time to move out of apathy and indifference and to recognize the grace extended, the arms opened wide, and the love poured out for each of us on that cross!
Have you ever felt the burden of life? Missed opportunities, failed responsibilities, family strife and struggle, deadlines, headaches...y'know—life? What about the feeling of that burden being eased?
Fatherhood is not something to be taken lightly. The joy of new life coming can be tempered by the worry and anxiety that you will fail, at some point. The truth is, you're right. But to be an unhindered father doesn't require perfection from you...it requires something else!
The church isn't a building or a place. It is a people, gathered together in Jesus's name. What would it take to set that gathering, that "church", loose and unhindered on the world?
Families can be hard. Filled with dysfunction and fighting they can seem so undesirable, but we yearn for them like almost nothing else. What inside of us desires to be part of a family and what does a perfect, unhindered family look like?
What is hindering the great life you seek? The ideal life that you're missing...who is in the way?
We have an opportunity to commit ourselves and our families to Jesus and his gracious, loving, infinite care. It's to rest in His Unhindered Care!
We want to be better, but can't seem to do it on our own. We need help.

Conflict doesn't always directly involve us, but it always impacts us. Can you become a peacemaker in the face of conflict?

We all know that time goes by quickly and much of the time in our lives goes by without us recognizing it. How do we take advantage of the time that we have right now? Because the fact is, time is important!

1 Samuel 14:1 One day Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “[Come on, let’s go] over to where the Philistines have their outpost.” But Jonathan did not tell his father what he was doing.
1 Samuel 14:4-6 to reach the Philistine outpost, Jonathan had to go down between two rocky cliffs that were called Bozez and Seneh. The cliff on the north was in front of Micmash, and the one on the south was in front of Geba. “Let’s go across to the outpost of the pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer.
“[Perhaps the Lord] well help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few.”
1 Samuel 14:7 “Do what you think is best,” the armor bearer replied. “I’m with you completely whatever you decide.”
1 Corinthians 15:33 Don’t be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
The way our lives interact with God directly depends on our faith. Faith is holding onto what we believe now even though we do not see it yet. And everyone is on this journey! As our faith continues to be built, it’s important to remember that we are all UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
We are in process and a direct message from God while in process is this: It is impossible to please him without faith in him. God is most pleased and honored when our faith is large. If that’s the case, how do we build our faith? What if we had a faith that changed the way we go through hard and good times, temptations and blessings? What if we walked through every day knowing that God was part of the construction process in our lives? What if we had a faith that would be seen as amazing to God?
In this series, UNDER CONSTRUCTION we will look at specific areas that build our faith. It is possible to be intentional about building faith. We will focus on five areas that direct us towards large faith. We are UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
Matthew 7:24-27 Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise,
James 1:23-24 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

“In this world you will have [trouble]…” Jesus
Admission of hardship is recognition that there is something better.

Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day

but they will be raised in [glory]. They are buried in [weakness], but they will be raised in [strength].
They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies.
For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.
1 Corinthians 15:50 What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that our physical bodies cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. These dying bodies cannot inherit what will last forever.
1 Corinthians 15:53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will [never] die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.

Welcome to the Branches Valentine’s Day Great Date Experience! We hope you enjoy this date with your spouse. As you find some time to get away together, find a quiet place to enjoy these conversations. This date has five discussions based around this year’s Branches Valentine’s Day message. Before you begin, spend a couple minutes in prayer, asking God to direct your conversation.
1 -- I WILL SPEAK LIFE INTO YOU
“...Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.” --Romans 4:17 This will be a game of toss so find a ball or something to toss for this next part. Pass it to the person who is not reading this. Because of your initiation in reading this Great Date, they get to start! It’s a great practice for couples to speak encouragement into one another. The person with the ball must start by speaking a statement of life about their spouse. When finished, toss the ball to the other person. Speak 5 statements of life into one another.
2 -- I WILL LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
“Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.” --Romans 5:8
Jesus’ work at the cross is the ultimate example for us in laying down our lives for one another. In our marriage, we can participate in sacrificial love by giving up our desires for our spouse’s desires. Finish answering the following statements together.
• I remember when you laid down your life for me when... • I remember laying down my life for you when... • My favorite thing that you do for me sacrificially is... • My favorite thing that I do for you sacrificially is... • I desire to help you better in this area...
3 -- I WILL FORCE MARGIN IN MY LIFE TO GET AWAY WITH YOU
“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” --Luke 5:16
• Name your top three dates of our entire relationship. • Name your favorite get away we have had and what made it so special to you? • How have we done in prioritizing special times away with each other? • What are our plans this year for dates and time away together? • If we won an all-expense trip to anywhere in the world, where would we go?
4 -- I WILL NOT LEVERAGE YOUR FAULTS, BUT FORGIVE
“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” Colossians 3:13
If you have a balloon, use it for this next part. Take some time to identify some of the hurts that you as a couple have endured together. Not necessarily issues with one another, but any difficult life circumstances, offenses, and hard times. With each mentioned event, blow one time into the balloon. After you have identified the difficulties you have endured, hold the balloon together and say a prayer, asking God to give you the desire and ability to forgive. After your prayer, let the balloon go together. Watch as the balloon floats around the room and imagine letting the air out of your issues with the power of forgiveness. Your hurts are an opportunity for you to do what Jesus does: forgive and love.
5 -- I WILL MODEL A GOOD MARRIAGE FOR OUR KIDS
Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” --Matthew 4:19
Answer the following questions together. • If our kids’ marriages will look like our marriage, how does that make you feel? • What things would you want to change? • Where should the priority of our focus be? Marriage or Kids? Why? • Do you believe that our children are blessed by our marriage? • In what ways should we practice loving each other better in front of our kids?
Love is known when it is acted upon.

John Ortberg says, “The soul is NOT ‘a theological and abstract subject’ The soul is the coolest, eeriest, most mysterious, evocative, crucial, sacred, eternal, life-directing, fragile, indestructible, controversial, expensive dimension of your existence. Jesus said it’s worth more than the world.
You’d be an idiot not to prize it above all else. Shouldn’t you get pretty clear on exactly what it is? Shouldn’t you know what it runs on? Wouldn’t it be worth knowing how to care for it? Two things are for sure. One is: you have a soul. The other is: if you don’t look after this one you won’t be issued a replacement.”
Wisdom Literature says in Psalm 42:5, “Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God—soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.”

Yes Ten is a refreshing look at the Ten Commandments. At first look, one might think that these commands are designed to rob us of our freedom of expression by preventing us from doing certain acts. Others believe them to be a list of standards that need to be achieved in order to be saved by God.
Throughout these messages, we learn that the Ten Commandments never saved anyone. We will also gain a new appreciation for their ability to protect us from screwing up our lives.
On the heels of a massive exodus from bondage, God gave the children of Israel commands that were intended to help them grow and thrive. He had no “daily grind” in mind.

A big, tough, blue-collar guy opens up with his small group about a family member’s struggles. This family member is heavily involved in drugs. He’s heartbroken by the ugliness of the situation.
He goes on to share that when Jesus finally got ahold of his own life, he, too, felt equally unloveable. Now, as he’s gripped by the transformational work that God’s doing within, he finds himself compelled to reach out to this family member who has brought so much grief into so many lives.
Explaining further evidence of the devastating mess, tears roll down. You see, there’s no quick fix. Instead of shouldering the burden alone, though, it’s shared by others who know that Jesus is the answer and who are willing to come alongside through prayer and encouragement.
As he hangs out with his group he’s able to experience a camaraderie and comfort he could’ve completely missed out on. Storm winds of life are gonna blow. But this is one man who’s committed to becoming spiritually fit in the company of his small group family.
Work schedules can make it challenging for people who want to come to church. It’s for that reason that a woman decided to plug into a small group. Quiet, by nature, she calls her leader after a few weeks had passed and explains how she’s been disconnected from God for years.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but I can tell that by being in a small group, God is at work. Though I have a lot of questions, walls are coming down. There are many things I still don’t understand and I have plenty of baggage that I’m continuing to sort through. So this can make trusting others an issue.”
But she goes on to say, “I’m here, though. I want to learn. I want to grow. I want to see my relationship with God be the primary focus of my life.”
In light of current challenges, she’s now allowing the wisdom of her small group to speak into her life rather than solely relying on her own wits. Her journey with Jesus continues - in the company of a few good friends.
