Gunnhild can tell that her mother doesn’t like the idea of her father going raiding across the sea, but to her it sounds like adventure. Her life is none too exciting on a remote farm in Denmark, though she loves learning how to weave from her mother, or hearing songs and stories from their neighbor. But when her father brings home a slave along with the silver coins, the “people across the sea” become very real. Eadyth is about Gunnhild’s own age, but she is frightened of everything, even the cows she is told to milk every morning. And yet, when she thinks she is alone, Eadyth can be heard singing in her beautiful, strange language.
