For the past week, women and men in Iran have taken to the streets to protest the custodial death of a young woman Mahsa Amini, age 22, at the hands of the morality police. Mahsa was arrested because her hijab did not cover her entire head and her hair was showing. A family member, Erfan Mortezaei, states “She was tortured, according to eyewitnesses," he claimed. "She was tortured in the van after her arrest, then tortured at the police station for half an hour, then hit on her head and she collapsed." Niloufar Hamedi the journalist who broke the story has been arrested. Hadis Najafi, age 21 was killed by six bullets when she joined the protests. Speaking from Tehran, Yasmin reminds us not to forget the brave women who are risking their lives to fight for their rights.
