This process has come from working with countless leaders and organizations, observing the universal shape of the process, and contemplating its articulation. I wrote the book containing these words more than a year ago, and have written another since then, but they still ring as true today as when I penned them. The seventh step is AGREEMENT. Agreement just might be the meaning of life. Disagreement blocks the flow of energy. Agreement opens and facilitates it. Metaphysics teaches us that reality has an argumentative structure. The goal of all communication is to create agreement - to create meaning by sharing it. It is all you need ever create.

This is seventh part of the second series of Season 2, which is about my new theory of human commerce.
The fifth and final layer of Commerce Theory is SYSTEMS & SIGNALS. Systems & Signals is an investigation of what we BUILD and SHOW to reveal and reinforce our group identities, both within and without. It is the most visible and outermost layer of what happens within, and it is through detection and analysis of systems & signals that we learn the deepest motivations and desires of people and their attendant groups. It is also key to the way that we improve group performance and cohesion: when we discover and clarify the deeper layers we are able to craft and shape the systems & signals to better reinforce group identity and communicate it to the outside world so that the quality of the members and collaborators we attract increases by many orders of magnitude.
Next time we'll wrap up our exploration of Commerce Theory with a conclusion about the practicality of theoretical thinking.

This is sixth part of the second series of Season 2, which is about my new theory of human commerce.
The fourth layer of Commerce Theory is ANTHROPOLOGY. Anthropology is the study of humans, and specifically the characteristics that distinguish humans from other creatures. One significant component of this is the richness and complexity of our rituals. Now that we know how our groups form and cohere thanks to the previous levels, we can look at the behavior in our groups and understand the significance of the cultures we create within them, as well as the great importance of doing this both consciously and subliminally. That's what this layer is about.

This is fifth part of the second series of Season 2, which is about my new theory of human commerce.
The third layer of Commerce Theory is SOCIOLOGY. Sociology is the study of groups. It derives from a Latin root that can translate to either "ally" or "friend". So, it's about allegiances against the outside and fellowship on the inside. What draws our groups together? The answer is shared perfections and preferred tradeoffs. We can't pursue every perfection within spacetime, and so we must trade some off to others as we pursue our ultimate ends together. Our traveling partners in these efforts create our social groups. This is the best way to think about sociology. We all belong to many groups over the course of our lives. All individuals belong to many groups, and all groups are made of many individuals; this is a social truth.

The second layer of Commerce Theory is THEOLOGY. While you likely have prior associations with that word, we are going to find hidden meanings that reveal its universal relevance. Naturally religions and religious have theologies. But...doesn't everyone actually have a religion and, therefore, a theology? Given the fact that each of us must make choices, simply for existing in spacetime, I assert that we all do. All of our decisions stem from some kind of sense about what is ultimately the most valuable state for individuals, groups, the human species, the natural world, etc. We can't make decisions without some kind of deep framework that anticipates a superior future state, and no one can be exempt from this. That's what theology is about.

The first layer of Commerce Theory is ONTOLOGY. Ontology is the study of being and existence. To understand human interaction we must first look closely at what is and discern what we can know about it. We quickly realize that what is is actually quite mysterious. We also realize we are constantly comparing what is to what could be, what once was, what is possible, and what we did not do. Are these, in any sense, real? The history of metaphysics is full of moves to contextualize much of what could exist within what does exist, and ultimately there's a central tension running through existence itself that animates and drives us to flow from one place to another. That's the study of ontology. How do we choose where to flow? Stay tuned for the next episode, which is THEOLOGY.

This is second part of the second series of Season 2, which is about my new theory of human commerce.
What is commerce? Is it simply the buying and selling of goods and services, or does it have a broader relevance that touches on all of our groups, relationships, and interactions?
More importantly, what ultimately drives it? In this episode I talk about the different definitions of "commerce" and how my definition is much broader than the one we usually think of. We then begin to unpack the different -ologies that form the 5 layers of every single human interaction from the observable surface to the very deepest and most transcendent heart, which we'll cover one by one in the next episodes.
The result of this investigation is a profound understanding of and appreciation for all human behavior and the, which ultimately leads to great compassion and power as you navigate society and seek more constructive, benevolent, and harmonious interfluence with all the people you encounter and interact with.

We humans engage in commerce at every moment. We're used to thinking of commerce in a specific way, but it actually has a much broader and more universally relevant definition which is capable of contextualizing and explaining all of human behavior, and that's what Commerce Theory is about.
In the series that follows we'll unpack my theory of commerce step by step, examining, exploring, and explicating the 5 different layers that I discern behind every single human interaction.
Fundamentally human society is always balancing the interplay of 2 different components, the individual and the group. Follow along with this series as it unfolds so you can more fruitfully observe, understand, and shape that dynamic within every group that you influence.

The ninth and final facet is...a nonjudgmental catalyst of the creative process. All of existence is engaged in a process and journey of moving from a state of lower valuation to one of higher valuation. You are too. And when we humans do it, we call it "leadership" and/or "creation". And since every action is one selected from infinite possibilities that lead to an open future, we must become adept at selecting those that most easily and effectively bring us to that state of higher valuation, as much as is possible given all the factors and variables that affect our equation. And something about my way of thinking make this choice easier and more fun, at least within the space that I hold. That's what this facet is about.

The eighth facet is...a playful, prankish puck of profound and puzzling paradox. The most alliterative of the facets, and I like alliteration, so that's saying something ๐ I once heard a philosopher note that there is a contradiction running through reality that manifests in every moment. Thinkers like Hegel noted this and sought to reconcile it in their systematic accounts of existence. The farthest back I can trace it is that pre-existence (God or quantum fluctuations) expanded into being and non-being, or what might be called being and potential being, and that reality somehow includes both, which feels like a contradiction. A paradox is a seeming contradiction, and the fact that they abundantly comprise so much of the fabric of reality gnaws at our souls, often subliminally. But the cosmic joke is a joke, not a tragedy, and sometimes we need a sense of playfulness to find the perspective necessary to see this and find the peace we seek. That's what this facet is about.

The seventh facet is...a therapeutic healer of people and their cultures. Why do cultures experience dysfunction? Why do they sometimes feel bad and full of friction? Can we find a universal root cause? If so, this would give us enormous power to improve their health and increase their functionality (the opposite of dysfunction). In this facet we seek this universal root of human dysfunction and suggest ways to overcome it. Full disclosure...this may pull you out of your comfort zone. But the result, I find, is always worth it.

The sixth facet is...a strategic theorist of commerce and communication. We humans interact at every moment of every day, whether we realize it or not. None of our actions, thoughts, intentions, or communicative gestures can ever escape either the influence of and/or influence over other people in some way shape or form. Everything, then, is a form of commerce. But what is it all after? That's what "Commerce Theory" is all about, and that will be the subject of the next series, but we have a few more episodes of the first series to get through first.

The fifth facet is...a lightning rod for and inspector of aspirations. All beings must navigate time and discern the best way to meet the future as it becomes the present. What is the framework by which you do this? Humans are unique in that we have an unusually sophisticated and nuanced way of envisioning our desired future. What are you aspirations? Are you clear on them? And, most importantly, is your current plan of action truly oriented toward achieving your aspirations? That's what this facet of my work is all about.

The fourth facet is...a finder and inspector of narratives. Think about the nature of existence. I think that, fundamentally, everything and everyone shares a similar quality, the quality to which everything just might boil down! That quality is narrative. The universe exists in/with spacetime, which means we move from one place to another over the course of time, and the result is a story. All individuals and groups have stories. And they drive us in a significant and paradoxical way. We must honor them, determine the best way to tell them, and think deeply about how to carry them in order to enter the future that we desire. The process is not always so simple or easy... That's what this facet of my work is all about.

The third facet is...a purpose-oriented personal growth and leadership coach. What is coaching? What does it mean to coach? That's what this segment is about. There are many coaches working, or trying to work, today. What makes them think they can do it? What have they discerned about their abilities that motivated them to step into that role? For me it's about holding space. It's a special, magical kind of space that allows a person's essence to emerge and express, a space in which that otherwise wouldn't have happened. And a space that reveals the highest and most energizing use of that person given their unique profile of stories, gifts, aptitudes, visions, and more. A space in which we see clearly the ideal dance between the individual and the various collectives in which they are enmeshed. That's what I think coaching is, or should be, and that's how I do it.

The second facet is...an inspirational polymathic intellectual and thought leader. Presumptuous? Perhaps. But I think there's something to it. For my entire life I've, often unconsciously, allowed my curiosity to lead me, guided by the question "what the heck's going on here?!", and the associated presupposition that everything provides some kind of clue, and therefore all knowledge must be somehow oriented towards answering the same question. What's the question? That's my favorite question, and it may not have an answer. But to be sure we need to see around the silos that we often put around our different ideas and specialities, and that's ultimately what this facet of my work is about.

The first facet is...an inexhaustibly insightful metaphysical philosopher and ontological theologian. Big words! What do they mean? Simply put it means that I am constantly looking for the deepest and most precise expression of what reality is made of so that we can observe and work with it better to improve our results. But there's a bit more to it than that. Still, this is where my thinking and conversation starts and, I would say, accounts for its great relevance to so very many problems and questions.

This is the introduction to the first series of Season 2, which is about the 9 facets that I've identified of my work.
Conveying the relevance and applicability has been a worthwhile challenge, and one that likely won't ever end. The fact is I actually never want to be too clear about how I help people because I always want it to be just a little spontaneous, surprising, and delightful!
But there are definitely things I can say for sure, and that's what this series is about. I've identified 9 different broad categories of advice and consultation that I can offer to motivated, growth-oriented individuals all across the spectrum of human commerce (which is actually all of human activity as you will hear later in this series).
In this introduction I lay out the 9 facets in preparation for a deeper dive into each for the rest of the series.

How do I know that YOU ๐ซต have a leadership vision?
A few days ago I was listening to an interview with Tom Hanks on a podcast I enjoy, Chinwag with actor Paul Giamatti and philosopher Stephen Asma.
Hanks talked about the phenomenon of "cognitive modernity", which is the period in history when our ancestors' brains evolved the ability to imagine what is not yet real, about 60 to 70 thousand years ago (estimates vary).
It is this ability that distinguishes us from all other known creatures.
It is an opportunity and a burden.
It has given us the standard of living we enjoy.
It is the reason we constantly improve.
It is also the reason we are constantly frustrated by what is not yet here.
It is the reason that, by definition, we all have visions.
And if you're a motivated, visionary leader, you go for them. That's all it means.

I have heard Alan Watts and Carl Sagan, philosopher and cosmologist respectively, and both influential in their own ways, express the sentiment that humans are the universe becoming aware of itself. This characterizes the human experience in all times and all places. As growth-oriented beings, we require endless challenges and problems to solve in order to facilitate this. All growth occurs from pursuing an ideal against which we are measuring reality. And once we approach that ideal we see new opportunities for growth, which means that the ideal itself contains the imperfection necessary to facilitate further growth, so the imperfectability itself IS the ideal, and we rely on this truth to provide the opportunity for growth in each and every generation, which is ultimately the overarching, sublime energetic engine that keeps the human species progressing, in all times and all places.

There are infinity upon infinity possibilities, and this is the dysfunction of Combinatorial Explosion.

5 Perpetual, Perennial, Paradoxical, Problematic Dysfunctions of the Human Condition - Part 3 - Existential Friction
Existential Friction is our pure experience of the present moment. As conscious, self-aware beings, we find ourselves trapped in the present moment, required by the nature of reality to take ACTION in every moment. Each moment demands a new ACTION, and there is no relief from this as long as we are ALIVE in such a way. I intuit that this experience is deeply uncomfortable for us, and that we sublimate this discomfort. We have two possible responses to Existential Friction: numb, or build. The path of leadership and creation is to build more of the time. Both options are unpleasant in their own ways, and this is the dilemma of the discomfort of forced choice.
There is no escape, only awareness, which will increase for you in becoming acquainted with this concept.

5 Perpetual, Perennial, Paradoxical, Problematic Dysfunctions of the Human Condition - Part 2 - Narrative Trauma
Narrative Trauma is about our distinctively human relationship with the past, both individual and collective, and how that shapes our experience of the present and decisions about the future.
All living things can be traumatized, but humans deal with this is a unique way that is both beautiful and dysfunctional. We all do this. To not do it would be deny our humanity in important ways. But it is a dysfunction and we find peace in the process of recognizing this truth as we build understanding of the mechanism.
The fact is that Narrative Trauma is one of the most inspiring and meaningful parts of being human. We can't escape it, even if we are aware. But build awareness and you will see this dynamic flowing through every human relationship, from the very smallest to the grandest.

Copulatory Happenstance is the strange way that we humans almost don't exist. The vast majority of theoretical humans maintain the quality of non-being, but a few of us are given the quality of being. This is either a curse or a blessing, and your answer depends on your perspective.
Copulatory Happenstance is one of the ways that biology meets spirituality. It's uncomfortable to contemplate, but overwhelming in wonder.
Just how many theoretical humans have not existed? You'll have to listen to get a sense of the answer.
You have being. What do you do with it? Contemplating Copulatory Happenstance is often the first step to getting unstuck from that question.

Welcome to a series about my 5 Perpetual, Perennial, Paradoxical, Problematic Dysfunctions of the Human Condition. After the 5 Metaphysical Realms, these are the most helpful and important idea, and each of them reveals a way that we humans experience the strange and wonderful condition of being human in each moment.
I call them "Dysfunctions" because fundamentally they reveal that the human condition is, by its very nature, endlessly dissatisfying and imperfectable. Our challenge and responsibility is to reframe each of them from burden to opportunity, but the fact is that the human condition itself is a dysfunctional one.
One more note: I intuit that many people instinctively associate thinking and talking about these 5 Perpetual, Perennial, Paradoxical, Problematic Dysfunctions with mental health, although this was not my intention. But they cause me to question the very coherence of the concept of mental health itself because, as I said, they reveal the human condition to be a dysfunctional one. While people also tell me that my professional services often have a therapeutic effect, I am not a licensed therapist or mental health professional. Anyone experiencing clinical depression, suicidal thoughts, or related symptoms should seek the counsel and guidance of a licensed mental health professional.

Also, I captured another awesome conversation with my son Arthur one evening when we were driving to dinner. We collectively discerned one of my signature philosophical concepts, the Sublime Sublimated Absurdity of the Ideal of Imperfectability, through a very organic and free-flowing dialogue.
