What are we suppose to do with trials when we aren’t certain we can get through them? What if any purpose do they have? How do we keep from becoming bitter, angry, depressed, or just plain mean and selfish? In what many scholars consider to be the very first book of the New Testament, James answered these kind of real life questions for his former Jerusalem congregation that had found it necessary to disperse due to a great persecution that began in Acts 8. To those facing significant trials in life, James wrote to let them know they could get through it, and be better for it.
