The Stellar Human podcast is for all you peeps who are trying to lead and grow teens into Stellar Humans. Sports coaches, dance teachers, school teachers, girl guide and boy scout leaders. Teens can be tough and it really does take a village, and this podcast is for the village. We've got amazing guests, tips and tricks, practical advice, and no-nonsense information!
This long overdue final episode of the season is about the art of not doing all the things. In keeping with that theme, we decided just to post it and not write a clever, quirky, or pithy episode description.
Enjoy.
With love from Robin & Stacy

This week we chat about why we all find it so difficult to be agreeable when we disagree. Either we acquiesce or we fight to be right. What's that all about anyway? Of course, we touch on where the inter-webs may have played its part in this too. (cause we love to hate on the socials)

Full disclosure, Stacy and I are totally off the cuff this week.
That said, we get into what happens when life throws us a curve ball and tries to knock us off course.
Robin eats an entire cake, a bag of chips, and four cookies.
Stacy gets logy.
Then we get back on our respective horses and carry on. Giddy up!
That last part is the hard part.

The inspiration for this week's episode comes from the many podcast interviews we tuned into recently featuring author Anne Lamott. She offers a plethora of quotable (and t-shirtable!) statements, each one catchy, honest, and poetic.
A few examples:
Help is the sunny side of control.
No is a complete sentence.
Life is an inside job.
We sift through our favourites and chime in with our own reflections and interpretations.

This week we look at the science of motivation to see if we can figure out where the hell to find it when we'd rather just not do the thing. Whatever that thing might be.
Turns out there is some pretty cool science that enlightens and informs. Now to use that knowledge to fuel some action!

This week's episode is part one of two because there is just so much Happiness (or as Oprah likes to say, happierness) material to talk about. There's the science, the practical stuff, the stellar human efforts, and the lessons. Always the lessons.
There is an awful lot out there about the pursuit of happiness, but this week we talk specifically about Arthur Brooks, his books, his prolific podcasting, and even his YouTube vids.

This week we slide down the slippery slope into what it means to be truthful. Is honesty the best policy? Are there conditions or circumstances where a little white lie is better? That slippery slope was steep!
What started this conversation was this short clip with Simon Sinek:

We can all fall victim to worrying about what other people think about us and the choices we make. But FOPO (Fear of Other People's Opinions) can stymie our creative ideas and halt our forward progress if we don't keep it in check.
This week we dig into Michael Gervais's book The First Rule of Mastery, for some help discovering why we care so much about what others think, and what tools we can use to curb the power of FOPO.

Not that we know anything about the science of smell, but neuroscientist Dr. Rachel Herz does, and she was a guest on The Happiness Lab podcast talking about smell and memories, our response to scents-aromas-odors, and the impact that smells have on our lives. And that IS something we can talk about.

French women don't get a Brazilian wax job, but rather, a "ticket de métro." Croissants are not French, but Viennese. Robin and Stacy have now added 'meeting Julia Louis-Dreyfus' to their bucket lists. These are but a few of the things you will learn in this week's episode of The Stellar Human Project podcast.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a podcast called "Wiser Than Me" in which she interviews older women to gain their wisdom about life, love, and aging. The show is poignant, candid, and hilarious. Have a listen here:

In this episode we digress into cat barf, toilet paper fluff, and Robin's 'not so stellar moment' 🥴 We are all a work in progress.
We also get into The Space Between. You know that space. The one where we know it's time to let go of something old even when we are not yet sure what the new thing is. How to trust yourself enough to hurtle yourself into the unknown. Having faith in that little teeny tiny voice inside you that knows you're going to be ok, that the next thing will be there when you do grab it... even if that voice seems like it's barely a whisper.

Happy New Year!
Welcome to the new and updated Stellar Human Project podcast.
This season I, Robin, recruited my bestie, Stacy to join me in the exploration of the stuff we love, live and laugh about as we stumble our way towards being Stellar Humans. We are not social researchers, and we are not psychologists. We are experiential experts in our own growth and struggles... and we think we are hilarious. And so, we are inviting you into our stories as we share what it means to be human.
This week we take a look at the concept of New Year's resolution. Love 'em, hate 'em?

Some days I find myself doling out great ideas, giving everything I can to all the people, places, and projects I can ...... and then I realize I've not taken and applied any of the advice or guidance I give the kids I teach to myself. Ouch. Big lesson. And that lesson comes with a little burnout, which does zero to move the needle forward in my goals, and even less to help the kiddos I am committed to help reach theirs.
This week is about stopping the guilt, assessing the needs, then a little 'practice what you preach' moment.

This week Keyva is helping us sort out the when and wheres of helping these kiddos manage their mental health. The idea of a 'mental health day' comes up.
Then she gives us something that I know I for one really needed..... she gives us permission to not only give the kids back the problems with kindness (because they are not ours to carry), and gives us permission to tell them that we care about what their going through, but that this is not the time. We can do that friends. We can acknowledge and set aside a time later, but we do not need to manage this right now.

This past week I had to tackle something totally foreign to me and I ran into many many MANY frustrations. It was a rude reminder to me that I have to remember not to talk to my students in the same way I would talk to someone who is an expert already. I need to use language and patience the matches where they are at in their learning journey. It is after all not helpful to explain things as if they already know what you are talking about!

We all know that feeling when burnout is lurking around the corner. We fall into all our self-care activities...drink water, get more sleep, take a bubble bath. One of our most important self-care requirements is about what we are feeding our brains and our hearts for inspiration, and it's often the one we forget.
Having a mentor is the best way to do that, and you can have a mentor you have never met and has no idea the impact they have on you.
- authors of books that impact you
- podcasters who inspire you
Today's episode is all about what mentorship is and how to seek that anti-burnout support you might not have even known you were looking for.

It's a tough balance as a coach or teacher.
Making sure you are honouring each individual kids needs to be seen, to be themselves, to feel comfortable in the safe space you have created for them, AND making sure that you are ensuring that stays true for each and every kid. Tall order.

Self Care.
Such a buzz phrase these days that I don't thing we even know what we are talking about sometimes!

We can't understanding inserting self-compassion into our lives without first knowing what we do that flies in the face of that very goal.

This week I have a guest co-host once again.
Kara and I talk about what it's like when life at home is bigger than life in the studio, on the field, or on the rink.
Trying to balance the love of what they do with you, with the realities of life at home, (that we may or may not know anything about) can be a tough balance.
Our job is to support them. This is their journey.
Kara had a great quote this week. Sometimes talking about it is hard, but they want to know you are there and that you see they are struggling, so if we could:
"ask them indirectly"
then they get what they need, and know you see them and are there if they need you.
Another brilliant nugget from one of my youth leaders!

Failure and success....they are not opposite ends of spectrum struggling against one another. They are friends, walking together to build a great life. Success is not possible without a certain amount of failure, so why pit them against one another?
With guest host Sam, from my youth leadership group, we dig into the relationship between these two seemingly opposites.

I am super excited to have Keyva with us again this week. As our resident mental health professional, Keyva is helping us navigate some of the mental health situations the kiddos we teach and coach may be facing. We are no replacement for a certified mental health expert, like Keyva, but a little knowledge about how to best support our youth on their mental health journey can go a long way to empowering them.
This week Keyva talks about how to assess if the emotional reaction we are having are serving us. She digs a little more into the Emotions Chart (which you can access by clicking on the link below).
As always, I am grateful to Keyva for her expertise and her general awesomeness.

This week we have an amazing guest, Lauren Ritchie.
Lauren has her MEd in Coaching Studies, her BA in Professional Communication, a Certificate in the Art & Science of Coaching, and a bunch more amazing things. All that just hangs on her wall but what I really love about Lauren is how passionate she is about kids!
Join us as we talk about how the leaders at the top of a youth organization need to not just state their values on the wall, or in their marketing, but how they need to model that, how to keep steady on that path when things get busy and stressful.
What we as coaches, teachers, and parents model, is what the kids we lead will learn.
We gotta walk the talk friends!

ALERT - this is a great episode not just for my teachers, coaches, and leaders of youth, but a fantastic episode for all my youth friends out there.
Today's guest is Brianna. She is a brilliant young woman who took a diagnosis of dyslexia and turned it from, an excuse not to achieve and a reason to have people expect less of her, into her superpower.
Her story is inspiring and a true story of self-advocacy, of determination, and of self awareness. Knowing when the dyslexia was to blame and when just plain old unpreparedness was the culprit, and owning that, was one of the most inspiring and vulnerable parts of her story. A lesson for us all.

I love that we are taking more openly about mental health.
That said, I think we are missing the mark because we don't know enough about the language we use around emotions to be accurately expressing what we are feeling.
Intro Keyva Jacobson, a certified councillor with her Masters in Counselling Psychology, to help us navigate the language around, in particular, depression and anxiety. And as a curve ball we talked about the word happiness.
Keyva will be a regular on the podcast helping us navigate the mental health issues our youth are facing.
Keyva is also a practicing councillor so if you want to connect with her, her contact is below in the links!

This week I had Jada as a co-host as we hashed through what happens when fear is holding teens back.
I love having these youth on the podcast as co-hosts because they teach me more and more about how to effectively help them get where they are trying to go.
Thanks to Jada for her honesty and openness. 💗

Sometimes our lofty goals as coaches and teachers need a time out....we need a little reminder why we do this. If we are in it for our glory, time to re-think. We are supposed to be here for the kids!
So....when they are sick, or injured....that is NOT the time to 'push through'.
Coaches, teachers, leaders, is it time to check yourselves?

'I am' statements can be so powerful when used to manifest the kind of person we want to be....but what happens when we don't address the negative statements that we inadvertently start with I AM. They can be just as powerful and actually derail the positive work we are trying to do.
'I am' is NOT the same as 'I am feeling...'
Whew.....as I prepped for today's episode I realized how much work I needed to do with my youth on this one, all because of how I phrase my everyday questions to them! 🥴
My guest co-host Zara helped me unpack this one and come up with some better ways to do things.

This week I have guest do-host Callie with me and I learned a ton! I love how much these youth have to teach me!
Callie and I talked about what's behind "I can't" (spoiler alert....its' fear), but she also had some amazing insights about how we get past this barrier, as well as some learning for us as leaders of youth into things we think we are doing to help but that are actually making it worse. 😳
Thanks so much to Callie for her wisdom, insights, and her honesty.

This week is our first co-hosted episode....and man I was a little nervous.
I realized that if I am going to know if what I am teaching and how I am guiding youth is actually landing as I hope, I need to ask the people I am trying to serve if I'm on the right track or if I'm talking out my ass! So from now on I will have a youth guest co-host!
This week, Breanna was gracious enough to share her thoughts, experiences, and ideas with us on how we as youth leaders can better the youth we lead deal with life's disappointments.
Three things we forget to ask when disappointment rears it's ugly head:
1. What does this thing you are trying to do or achieve really mean to you?
2. How badly do you want it?
3. What do you need from me to help you get there?

Vanessa McWilliams is an author and all round Stellar Human....and she knows it!
BUT....when Vanessa was a teenager she didn't feel that way. She was diagnosed with Alopecia as a child and felt 'different' her entire teenage life.
When I asked her what teenage Vanessa needed to feel better about herself....
"I wish someone had just sat me down at my kitchen table, even if it was one of my parents, and just looked me in the eye and said 'what do you need?'"
Thank you to Vanessa for her openness, her sharing, and her incredible laugh.

Here is the funny thing about life...there will ALWAYS be learning.
The longer we spend in a leadership or teaching role, the easier it is for forget that teaching is about learning too. We can get so caught up in being the 'expert' that we forget that the only way to be effective leaders is to listen, learn, and be curious.
This week I share a huge realization I had that led to me to want to seek more answers and ask more questions, all so I can be a better leader of youth.

There is a fine line between sharing to connect with another human (what we ultimately all are trying to do) and hijacking their story and making it all about you. 😬
We can cross that line so fast that we don't even realize we've done it and then we are left wondering how come someone with such a similar experience as our doesn't want to be around us, and thinks we are a jerk!
There is an art to sharing.

'Expectation' has become a dirty word, a word used in the negative, as punishment, as a way to place the blame of disappointment onto someone else.
I am here to reclaim EXPECTATION and use it for good. It really can be a superpower! Expectations have the power to changer your life and the life of the youth you lead for the better!
In this episode I talk about a podcast on focus. I remembered who it was. It was Brené Brown with Dr. Amishi Jha on Finding Focus and Owning Your Attention
This was AMAZING!

You know how a book doesn't just jump into Chapter #1, first you have the Forward?
Well this is my forward.
This is an introduction to me. What I'm about, why I'm here, and why you should subscribe and follow my Podcast, adn why we should be friends!
I am all about empowering our youth. Helping them learn to get out of their own way, learn to advocate for themselves, make decisions they are proud of, know what they stand for, and know it's ok to change their minds.
That's a tall order, which is why we are here. To do that, we as the leaders of youth need to be well armed with information, resources and practical skills applications to help them get there.
Be Kind.
Be Love.
Be a Stellar Human.
