Belonging and fitting in are basic human needs, especially for young children so they can grow emotionally. Without a touchstone to help Mary feel safe as an adolescent, her interests took a turn toward a type of survival she wasn't fit for. At fifteen, Mary attempted suicide to fit in to a gang of delinquent kids. She fit in alright, but endured some absurd rituals to stay in.
