The Jazz of Psychology: Recent Episodes

Thea Slate

Welcome. The Jazz of Psychology is a Blog with a different take on Psychology and Everyday life. A sort of a Matrix, if you will. The Blog is for anyone having trouble understanding the why and the how. The purpose of the Blog is to help understand the importance of Psychology and how the lack of it can influence peoples' lives. All of the analysis provided is based on a collection of real-life events and real-life people. All personal information is classified and sealed for security purposes, you understand, right? Disclaimer: the analysis and opinion provided may not be "pretty." So, browse at your own risk. Kidding! Take a look at the webpage for more info and see how you like it for yourself. Now then. Keeping up with the “mysteriousness” of the title, without any intros, we’ll continue where Part 1 left off. For newcomers it is highly recommended to refer to Part 1 of the dual-post. Otherwise – read at your own risk. Kidding! But jokes aside – yes, it would be better to start from Part 1. Just saying.

The most popular Subconscious theory is the one by none other than Sigmund Freud. In an extremely short summary, the theory argues that people’s minds are deeper than one might think. A picture of an icebergusually is the visual used to explain it. True. But this post will take a different look at the Subconscious Mind, as per the usual framework of the Blog. Right, a quick side note: a slight mention of the topic happened in the post: Venting VS Exploding, if anyone is interested. Anyhow.

Now then. A little bit of fear, or rather, a lot of it, we covered a while back in the “Hostages of Fear” post. There we talked about how people can to learn to be afraid of certain things without having experienced them. This time we’ll take another look at Fear and it’s opposite, the “Good Twin” – Love.

If anyone here knows of a movie or a book (Alice in Wonderland comes to mind as one) where there are two individuals (or forces) that are complete opposites of each other, then you are also aware of the “which is better? dilemma: to be feared or loved?” A short answer: both. Here’s why.

Well then, since we already covered lack of self-awareness, we’ll move on to its close neighbor – self-criticism. This little rascal is a tricky one. Here’s why. A poorly balanced self-criticism indicates one thing – a weak mindset. What does “poorly balanced” mean, you ask? It means that the criticism provided is not regulated. It is either used “too much” or “not enough.” The post will cover both sides of this coin.

So, a little bit of self-awareness was covered in the post about self-centrism. Lack of self-awareness does include the inability to perceive oneself from the side, but it’s a bit broader than that. So, the difference between a “God” and a non-self-aware-persona is that “God” tells others how to live, because they believe they are “the rightest” of them all. “Mr. / Mrs./ Miss-Know-it-alls” do not fall short of that too.

Now, with self-awareness, or rather, the lack of it – people tend to point out things about others with the pretext of “I would never” say or do as the other person, when in reality the person is doing and saying exactly like the other person.

For instance: “that person is racist, see the way they are looking at us?” Says a person, who, themselves, are racists, but will never admit it out loud when confronted directly. Why? Well.

In Part 1 we talked about what it is like to care for a mentally ill family member and the emotional toll it puts on the care-giver. Now we’ll discuss another overlooked side of a mental illness. What is it? Personality. Need details? Usually people pity the mental patient, because no matter how they act or what they say, is “explained” by their “condition”, making it “ok”. Well… Here’s the thing. Sometimes mental patients become aggressive and become a threat not only to themselves, but those around them too.

The words Mental Illness bring a bunch of different reactions to the table. The usual rainbow consists of pity, sadness, grief and compassion, usually for the illness afflicted person. But what about the ones taking care of them? What about family members, who are related to the mentally ill one? Let’s take a look.

How a multi-cultural workplace setting can backfire.

Variety is good. It makes routine day-to-day life more colorful. Now, let’s look into how the same variety can become a hindrance in the workplace.
For instance. What happens when a multi-cultural work environment gains a bit more of one nationality of people? The scale tips. What happens if the scale keeps tipping? Human nature kicks in. It is nothing to be fearful of, but rather mindful. How so? Simple. Allow to elaborate.

Quick, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “support”? Customer service? IT tech? In sickness and in health? Something along those lines?
Has anyone here ever considered how the best support can be not supporting someone or something? No? That’s not how it works, you say? Why not? Because it would be rude? That’s not what a family does? Best friends support each other through thick and thin?

This time we’ll dive in without much ado – imagine two items: a cauldron and a jar, a little visual aid, to help illustrate the topic better. The cauldron will represent insecurities that originate from the inside of a person, while the jar will be meant for things that originate “outside” – other people, the surroundings and such.

How employer expectations and never-ending demands impede work performance.

As a rule, there will be things expected from the new employees when starting a new position. Those are usually listed within the job ad. Employer expectations can be called the “job description” – as it is most likely that everything listed on the job application, will be expected to be fulfilled by the new recruit. Which is reasonable. If a certain position is hiring, it is probably because they need someone who can handle certain responsibilities. However. Employer demands are a whole different topic. Let's dig deeper.

This time we’ll talk about a topic with a twist. The phrase: “Less is more” is something that most of you have heard at least once in your lives. Usually, it means that doing or saying something less is better, right? Or is it? Let’s take a different look at it.

Now, the one advantage that the weak mindset has, is that it has the potential to evolve. We’ll discuss what determines that in a moment. Most of it depends on the person. Just as they say: “You can’t make a horse drink, if it doesn’t want to.” A person needs to want to change first of all, before anything can be done. So that’s the starting point. The amount of effort the person is willing to put into it – is the second step.

When a person becomes an adult and “leaves the nest” to start one of their own, they leave with a certain understanding of how a “family” is. For the sake of the argument, we’ll call this the “family model.” What this model does is, sets a certain “baseline” for the person of the “idea” of how a family “should be.” Later on, when the person meets someone, and decides to build a family with them, they use their “family model” as a “starting point.” Which is not bad. If that “model” is a working one.

If overthinking is thinking too much about something, then this one should really spark your interest. Did you know that there is such a thing as “underthinking?” If not, you're about to find out.
Not thinking enough ahead, is what causes problems also. It works on the same scale as overthinking, except it goes the other way. This is simply, as it sounds: the question of doing it today or not. If there is an option of “not doing it” – the weak mindset will take it.  Why? Because “today” is still good. The fact that “tomorrow’s” problem is “today’s” problem does not apply. It’s like choosing to pay the bills the day after everything gets shut down. Because while everything was working – there was “no need” to do it.

Anxiety is not a new topic. Everyone knows what overthinking is too. Or do we?
What makes people anxious? Short answer? The anticipation of a negative reaction from the environment, or in other words, from the people around them.

When a company constantly has open job positions, it can mean one of two things.

1: the business is booming. The company is always moving forward. The workload is increasing and so is the number of employees. Pretty cool, right?

Now let’s take a look at the other reasons for having open job positions, constantly. It may be due to the simple fact that the business is struggling and not because of a shortage of clientele.

The thing with languages – they are not the same words only, they are a different culture, customs, people, mindset. It is not enough to speak a language to be able to communicate with people in the truest sense.

Miscommunication happens not because of not speaking the same words, but because the same words are understood differently. The problem lies with Perception, which is based on Psychology. In other words – it’s not the people who are communicating with each other, but the mindsets.

You know the thing the kids do? Use their imagination when they are bored? Like when they go for a walk on a rainy day and end up thinking of a puddle as an ocean? Imagination inspires creativity, so when kids do it – it’s adorable. But what happens when adults do it? Well, let’s take a look, shall we?

When adults grow up to be ego-centric, they can feel more significant, when compared to others. This happens when a person’s mental development becomes impaired, for whatever the reasons, thus causing the ego-centric stage to “latch on” to the mind and make its way into adulthood.

What we're talking about here is a learned, but not experienced fear, usually due to someone else having a negative experience with that something and relaying it to the other person. Think of older people and children. The correlation usually goes like so: the longer the years lived, the more experience one has; hence their “knowledge” is more valid, just ‘cause. Give it a moment.

If Experience is the best teacher, then Life is the best research.
It’s not necessary to develop a hypothesis, collect data through extensive experimentation in order to find something.
With observation and analysis, everything in the World can become a "case study" with every living moment. All it takes is to watch and listen. Of course, asking a few follow-up questions would be perfect, if possible, but is not required. A lot of things can be seen and understood differently when observing the environment around a person. Not all public happenings are private. Especially if they are shared willingly in social media.

The 2nd key difference between polar opposite ways of thinking is Perception and it is closely intertwined with Maturity. Either one can indicate the level of the other. Why? Because Perception reflects an understanding of how people see certain things, which, as we know, stems from Maturity. Now, because we have already covered Maturity, this time we’ll take a closer look into Perception. As closely as it is related to Maturity, Perception can also act as an independent agent.

The 1st key difference between polar opposite ways of thinking is Maturity. Doesn’t say much, though, does it? Shall we take it from the top, then? First things first, to make the difference clear: puberty is for the body and maturity is for the mind. Our focus here is the mind, after all. So, we’ll begin by asking the right questions: What is maturity? How does it work? What role does it play? Why is it important?

Psychology can also be called the Matrix. Why? Give it a moment and you’ll see.
The thing with Psychology is that it is like a double-edged sword. As many advantages as it has, it can also be slightly unsettling. Yes, it works for the benefit of the People. Yes, it is able to help us understand each other better. But. Of course, there is a “but.” Many graduates of Psychology often share the same point of view: They regret studying Psychology.
Those who learn it are granted a “superpower” and are able to see “the truth.” Psychology sees through all of the façade that people put up through much effort. We’re not talking about fake pictures on Instagram. We’re talking about something deeper here. Each person has their background and their story. For someone, who understands how Psychology works and is able to use it there are simply no more secrets, which can become a problem...

Considering the growth of evolution and civilization - it can seem rather "outdated" to keep believing in the story about one man creating our world in seven days. But Religion does have a "safety feature", which, perhaps is what makes it appealing to some still, even when living in the age of science and technology that we live in today and that is staying the same. Most Religions haven't changed much since their creation. It is that feature that makes them something stable. Something familiar. Something reliable. Where does Psychology come in? Right here.
Because if Psychology was taught today, with the same level of devotion as Religion used to be taught back in the day, within each household, then more people now would be able to understand each other better.

Psychology was created by studying people for the sole purpose of explaining their behavior and what causes it. It's designed for the People, by the People. Psychology serves one purpose only – to help people understand each other better. Unfortunately, Psychology has been misunderstood for generations. It has become somewhat more popular in recent years, but even so, it fails to integrate itself into our lives. Maybe because it is viewed as a science rather than a social skill?
