Beyond a Doubt: Recent Episodes

Alaina Ione

As a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Alaina had her own personal conversion story that led to a testimony as strong as "knowledge beyond a doubt," and personal revelations reinforced that testimony. She is no longer a Mormon. This is happening more and more, but how and why?

Join her and her husband, Jonathan, in seeing the LDS church through the eyes of one having grown up with it as everything in life vs. one who never knew anything about Mormons (except that they were strange and peculiar) until later in adulthood. As they came to understand each other’s experiences, they developed their own conclusions about the church, ultimately leading to the combined understanding that - much like Joseph Smith’s revelation taught him - none of these religions can be true.

As Alaina teaches her old beliefs to Jonathan, perhaps - hopefully - believers and non-believers alike can start to understand each other a little bit better.

Rather than teach Jonathan about being an adolescent in the church in general, I try to get more personal and share with him why I, myself, believed; and what it meant to me.

Jonathan comes to better understand my knee-jerk tendency to defend the church - which is founded on my previous ideas of how close Jesus Christ literally was, according to my understanding.

In this episode, I start to teach Jonathan about the Plan of Happiness - who we are, where we came from, where we're going, and why, according to Mormonism.

In this episode we talk about Mormon roles of a woman in romantic relationships as I understood them, and how those teachings and ideas affected my entire life. There are a lot of trigger words in this episode, and much of the talking includes ideas about sex (as most Christian faiths have very specific rules and regulations surrounding the subject, Mormonism being no exception).

We mention this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkNez93YNh4) , featuring David Archuleta, which has been trimmed down.

In this Episode we approach what promptings of the Holy Ghost are, and give examples of my own and others’ experiences with them. From manipulation to silent pleas for comfort, we discuss different types of revelation and some reasoning behind why we may feel what we feel.

Jonathan has asked many times in previous episodes what exactly a testimony is. In this episode, we take the time to define what they are and what bearing them means.

In this episode, I realized I'm still pretty emotional about the First Vision, when I give Jonathan the first discussion. Every time I gave the first discussion on my mission, the story of the First Vision got to me, because it directly spoke of Jesus Christ - my then-number-one relationship. As it turns out, the idea of having a relationship with a being as understanding and personal as Jesus Christ in my world, is still the core of my being.

In this interview we meet Phoebe, a born-and-raised Mormon with experiences that I feel some women will fully relate to. Having gone through hell and back during two very different marriages, she has come a long way in her search for herself and the life she has always wanted. If you relate to Phoebe at all, you'll see through her that it's never too late to make progress in your relationship with yourself.

This episode is meant to introduce us, giving a glance into Alaina's personal conversion story that lead to her being a hardcore True Believing Mormon; and a glance into Jonathan's limited understanding of growing up with an affiliated religion. Welcome to Beyond a Doubt Podcast!

We have our very first guest in this episode. Jefferson Cloward tells us about some of his experiences surrounding the LDS church. He started out with a strong testimony, then, after years of experience and questioning (some of which he shares in the podcast), he ultimately joined the atheist population.

How did someone with such a testimony end up questioning enough to leave? For those maybe trying to understand a loved one who's left the church - or for someone who's left, and would like some help with words to share their feelings with loved ones - listen to this podcast and get some very good insights.

In this episode, Jonathan hears the 13 Articles of Faith for the first time, and has a lot of questions - making Alaina struggle to keep things simple for now. In the end, she learns more than she teaches, as Jonathan provides insights she never would have been able to even conceptualize.

We are becoming more relaxed around the mics and the idea that people will be hearing our voices, so this one - hopefully - feels a bit different than the rest have been.

In this episode, we revisit the last one. After being together for nearly 10 years, we are still developing the ability to understand each other's points of view in real time, and last episode we failed. So to correct the misunderstanding that was discovered during editing, this is an attempt to clear up some things that were being (or not being) communicated.

This is an attempt to go back to my roots of the reason I started this podcast. Rather than teach Jonathan what Mormons believe, I'm trying to get more personal and share with him why I believed, and what it meant to me.
