In this episode, we’ll discuss the difference between racism and racial insensitivity, how to identify each of them, and how to respond effectively in each case.
Racism (as I’m speaking of it here) is a problem of hatred. But what do we do when things are not-totally-racist-but-still-not-great? I’m talking about when something said is simply out of touch, flippant, or inconsiderate. When the problem is apathy rather than malice, we have a case of racial insensitivity.

Why does this distinction matter? This is more than a vocabulary lesson – this is a method for understanding the root issue so you can respond well. Apathy and hatred are similar, but they are opposite issues. Different problems need to be met with different solutions. This means that racism requires a different response than racial insensitivity.
