In this episode, Anita and Aileen bring their attention to the celebration of Filipino American History Month in October. They express their surprise when they discover the first known records of Filipino in Americans as early as 1587 in Morro Bay, California and a settlement in Louisiana in 1763.
Despite being one of the earliest settlers in the Bay Area and continental United States, most Americans did not know about their presence or recognize the Filipino ethnic identity. Until recently, growing up Filipino in America was often greeted by blank stares and confusion about where they fit into known “other” ethnicities.
Learn about the multicultural heritage that is the root of the vibrant Filipino culture and language. Early Malaysian cultural exchange, Spanish colonization and Chinese immigration has had enormous influences on the indigenous people and have shaped the Filipino identity, cuisine and language.
As Aileen shares her experience of growing up Filipino American, we learn how her community preserved their culture living in America and how they continue to pass their cultural heritage down to future generations.
Join the GenerAsianX Podcast with hosts Anita and Aileen as they discuss the celebration of Filipinos in American from their GenX and Asian American perspective.

In this podcast episode, hosts Anita and Aileen venture into the intriguing universe of Barbie, exploring the surprising layers of emotions, satire, and social commentary presented in the recent Barbie movie. The hosts share their initial skepticism about the film, driven by their curiosity to understand what makes the younger generation resonate with Barbie.
As Anita and Aileen recount their experience watching the movie, they openly express their moments of bewilderment and discomfort during its viewing. These reactions reflect the film’s twists and turns, challenging traditional notions of a typical Barbie movie. They dissect the movie’s references to iconic pop culture and cinematic history, highlighting its ability to weave nostalgia into the narrative.
The discussion deepens as the hosts analyze the movie’s themes of feminism, gender roles, and power dynamics. They examine Ken’s transformation from an emasculated character in Barbie’s world to his realization of empowerment in the real world. The podcast emphasizes how the film topples gender norms and prompts contemplation about societal expectations.
Throughout the episode, the hosts advise that the film is neither purely shallow nor deeply profound, but rather a unique combination of nostalgia, humor, and societal introspection.
As the discussion concludes, Anita and Aileen recommend the film to those who enjoy satire, and over-the-top entertainment. They acknowledge that the movie might not resonate with everyone, but is a film that proves to be more than just a conventional Barbie story.

Gen Xers are known for being gritty. SUCK IT UP! SUCK IT UP! was something we practiced and shouted out to other generations. It is a mentality that we used to navigate through the world to get results!
We ask the following questions in this episode:
Is this a superpower? Why is this skill powerful? Where did it come from? What happens when this skill melds with Asian Immigrant work ethic and values? What happens after a lifetime of ‘sucking it up’? Is this good or bad?!?!
We answer these questions and explore the dark side of this mentality as we share our experiences and revelations.
