Fish adapt very well to these cold temperatures as the ice starts to form above. To control their body temperature fish will go deeper as the water column flips and cold water moves to the top. But in smaller lakes, this can prove to be deadly. Ice acts as a lid reducing or altogether stopping the transfer of oxygen and fish in smaller lakes and ponds can suffocate.
