Identifying whether a scrum master is doing their job well is an interesting and tough question to answer. Scrum Masters are not directly responsible for delivery nor are there too many metrics available to measure their success directly.
As the coach of the team, they can invariably only move as slowly as the weakest member of the team. If they are having difficulties in getting the team to work together effectively, they could still be doing a great job as a scrum master but not seeing the positive outcomes of a cohesive and mature team.
The nature of the job also requires that a great deal of time and effort is invested in helping the team create an environment where people can excel.
These things take time.
We asked John McFadyen to walk us through how he would identify whether a scrum master was doing a great job or not and his answer is contained in this short video.
John McFadyen has worked on some of the largest, most complex Agile transformations in Europe and the UK. He has worked as a scrum master and agile coach on some of the highest performing #scrum teams in the world.
