In this in-person international episode recorded in Japan, I sit down with U.S. Air Force veteran and cybersecurity manager Matthew Yard for a wide-ranging conversation about military service, international marriage, multicultural parenting, leadership, communication, health, and gratitude. Mr. Yard shares how losing his mother to cancer during high school influenced his desire to find camaraderie, purpose, and a community larger than himself—eventually leading him into the United States Air Force.
Mr. Yard walks me through his military journey from technical training in Biloxi, Mississippi, to assignments in Turkey, Japan, Korea, Germany, and Afghanistan. We discuss the mentors who helped him develop as a young service member, the importance of healthy military leadership, and why many young troops need more than an assigned supervisor—they need someone genuinely invested in their growth. He also reflects on serving at Bagram Airfield, experiencing indirect fire, witnessing the dangers faced by other service members, and recognizing how precious his family and his own life truly were.
We also explore Mr. Yard’s experience as an American husband married to a Japanese woman and the father of three biracial daughters. He explains how cultural differences, language barriers, and emotionally charged conversations created misunderstandings early in his marriage. Together, we discuss bilingual parenting, raising children across multiple countries, helping children develop their own cultural identity, and the importance of intentionally creating individual father-daughter time before children grow up and leave home.
The conversation also examines public speaking and professional development through Toastmasters. After missing a career opportunity, Mr. Yard recognized that technical knowledge alone was not enough; he also needed to communicate his ideas clearly and confidently. I share my own experiences as a speaker and emphasize that effective communication affects far more than promotions—it strengthens leadership, marriages, parenting, conflict resolution, and personal boundaries.
Finally, Mr. Yard shares the medical crisis that abruptly ended his Air Force career. After military medical personnel initially failed to identify blood clots in his lungs, his wife continued advocating for additional testing until the condition was discovered. Although the diagnosis resulted in his medical separation, it opened the door to a federal civilian career. His central lesson is one everyone can apply: never take your health, family, opportunities, or present circumstances for granted, because life can change without warning.
