Over dinner one evening an Edwardian gentleman informs his guests (including the story's narrator) that he has built a device capable of time travel.

The narrator concludes that not many of the guests believed the Time Traveller, as he was a very intelligent man, likely to play elaborate pranks. The narrator returns to dinner at his house the next week where they have been instructed to begin dinner without their host. When the Time Traveller returns he tells them of his experiences in the past week.
