On the same day in 1985, the following three things happened to Andy Cumming, in this order: He found out that his testicular cancer, for which he’d been undergoing chemo treatments for five years, was gone, for good. He proposed to his girlfriend. He’d been waiting until he was in the clear, because he didn’t want to saddle her with a dying husband. That afternoon, he found out that he’d gotten HIV through a blood transfusion he received for his hemophilia.
How does your worst day stack up against that? But that was almost 40 years ago. Today, he’s still alive and even survived a liver transplant. Duff and Matt speak with Andy about how constantly being told he was dying has informed the way he has lived.
