Marianne Worthington grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and moved to southeastern Kentucky in 1990 where she works as a teacher, editor, and writer. She is author of Water. Witness. Word., poems from Belle Point Press (2026), and The Girl Singer, poems from University Press of Kentucky (2021), winner of the Weatherford Prize for Poetry. She co-founded and co-edited Still: The Journal, an online literary magazine publishing writers, artists, and musicians with ties to the Appalachian region (2009-2024). Her work has been supported by the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council, and the Appalachian Sound Archives Fellowship at Berea College. In 2026 she was awarded the inaugural Writing Prize from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. She has edited five anthologies, including two for the Hindman Settlement School. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Oxford American, CALYX, Grist, Appalachian Review, and One Art, among other places. A retired and recovering college professor, she often teaches poetry and nonfiction writing classes for workshops and conferences.

A.p. Harbor is the pen name / band name of Andrew Preston, writer and producer from Van Lear, Kentucky. He is the author of The Hum of a Dreaming Moon, a full-length, illustrated collection of lyrics and poetry. Preston has been a featured songwriter by the International Bluegrass Music Association, lecture faculty at the Appalachian Writer’s Workshop, and nominee for the 2020 Audioverse Awards. His lyrics and poetry have been published in Untelling Magazine and Discarded, a rural anthology. With works spanning eight albums and hundreds of performances across North America, Asia, and Europe, Preston and his bandmates have become mainstays of Appalachia’s burgeoning indie scene. In his other life, he sells books and coffee at The Fuzzy Duck Coffee Shop and CoffeeTree Books in Morehead, Kentucky, where he lives with his husband and two cats.

The first African American writer to be named Kentucky Poet Laureate, Frank X Walker is Professor of English and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he founded pluck! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts & Culture. He has published eleven collections of poetry, including Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers, which was awarded an NAACP Image Award for Poetry and the Black Caucus American Library Association Honor Award for Poetry. He is also the author of Buffalo Dance: The Journey of York, winner of a Lillian Smith Book Award, and Isaac Murphy: I Dedicate This Ride, which he adapted for stage. Voted one of the most creative professors in the south, Walker, a Danville native, coined the term “Affrilachia” and co-founded the Affrilachian Poets. A Cave Canem fellow, his honors also include a Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry. His most recent collection is Masked Man, Black: Pandemic & Protest Poems.

He has also published works in anthologies and periodicals including The Future of Black: Afrofuturism, Black Comics, and Superhero Poetry; Anthology of Appalachian Writers; Hayden's Ferry Review; and more. He received the Kentucky Al Smith Award in Art in 2010 and the Southeastern Libraries Association Award for Excellence in Original Artwork in 2022. His artwork is featured in the NAACP Image Award-winning poetry collection, Perfect Black by Crystal Wilkinson and A is for Affrilachia by Frank X Walker. He was inducted as a member into the Affrilachian Poets in 2022.

In a special episode of the podcast, Kendra interviews Julie Rae Powers about their new photography book, Deep Ruts.
Julie Rae Powers received their MFA in Photography from The Ohio State University and their BFA in Photography from James Madison University. Their photographic and written work has focused on family history, coal, Appalachia, the queer “female” gaze, the butch body, and queer chosen families. Their work is collected by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan, have been awarded the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in 2016 and 2020 and was selected in Critical Mass’ Top 200 for 2021. Julie Rae is a part of Y’all Means All: Queering Appalachian Voices edited by Z. Zane McNeil. Soft Lightning Studio, an inclusive photo book publisher created and ran by Julie Rae published The Home We Know by Ben Willis which was featured in the Washington Post and is collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Watson Library. Additionally, they are the author and editor of a forthcoming collection of Queer Appalachian photographers. For their day job they work as an Instructional Designer.

Amanda Page is a Columbus-based writer from southern Ohio. Her work appears in Belt Magazine, The Daily Yonder, 100 Days in Appalachia, Literary Hub, and YES! Magazine. She is the editor of The Columbus Anthology from Belt Publishing and The Ohio State University Press, and creator of Packard’s Columbus, a walking tour of Frank Packard architecture in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Her essay, “The Packard Presence in Columbus, Ohio,” about developing the tour, is featured in the anthology Midwest Architecture Journeys from Belt Publishing. Page is the Founding Director of Scioto Literary, a nonprofit that supports writers and storytellers in Scioto and surrounding counties in the tri-state region of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. With David Bernabo, Page is co-director of Peerless City, an award-winning documentary that examines the rise, decline (and rise) of economic prosperity in Portsmouth, Ohio through the lens of three distinct slogans adopted by the city over two centuries.
