Arts at the Palace in Hamilton is Madison County’s destination for artist empowerment through mentoring, workshops, and collaboration. Summer is here and that means Open Farm Day is just around the corner. We sit down to talk about what to expect this year with Katie Livingston, she just started her role as Local Foods Educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County. Open Farm Day will be July 26 and this year there are 28 farms you can visit across Madison County. Open Farm Day is a free, family-friendly event where you can tour local farms, meet the people behind your food, see animals up close, and explore the world of agriculture.
Make sure to get your passport, take part in the Goosechase interactive scavenger hunt, dress for the weather and bring cash!
Also, the Madison County Fair begins July 23, running through July 27. Make sure to check out all of the great things the 4H kids have been doing.
CCE is hosting Adventures at the Fairground for youth ages 8–15! Join us for a FREE day of fun, learning, and agriculture at the Madison County Fairgrounds in Brookfield, NY on July 24! When you sign up it includes Fair admission, transportation, and Food Bucks for lunch at the Fair Board Food Booth! Please register by July 20.

Wanderers' Rest Humane Association (WRHA) is the only open admission shelter in Madison County. Wanderers’ Rest serves hundreds of animals every year. The organization accepts the lost, homeless, and surrendered animals from the local community and beyond.
Their facility is in desperate need of renovations and repairs so they can better serve our furry community. Those renovations include septic, HVAC system, kennels, and more. Sarah Murdie, Executive Director of WRHA, joins the Milk House to talk about their Capital Project Plan, the funding needed, and some great programs they have coming up.

Delphi Falls County Park was purchased in 2018. Since then, Madison County has worked hard to make the park a destination that all can enjoy. As we get closer to the park being fully open to the public once again, take a journey with us to learn more about its past.
Jerome "Jerry" Mark Antil spent many years of his youth growing up at Delphi Falls. The majestic two tiered water fall played a huge role in his life and the Antil Family built the original home and barn that used to be on the property. Jerry's time at Delphi Falls inspired him, he wrote several books about the area, including the Delphi Falls Trilogy and The Boy and the Big White Rock.
Delphi Falls County Park has wrapped up the final phase of construction, and the new event hall at the lower falls will be open to the public Summer 2025. We hope everyone takes a chance to walk the rim trail to the upper falls and enjoy a picnic by the base of the lower falls.

This Women's History Month, we discuss with Madison County Historian Matt Urtz women in Madison County history from the Suffrage movement in the mid 1800s to today. Currently, in Madison County there are 6 female Supervisors on the Board, this is the most women on the Board at one time in history. Many of Madison County's community organizations and not for profits today are lead by women who are some of the best in their fields. Avian (Bird) Flu is something we keep hearing about, but what is Avian Flu? Is it an illness found in humans or just birds? Is there a vaccine? Since President Donald Trump took office again on Jan. 20, federal law enforcement, especially U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), have been tasked to detain and deport undocumented immigrants. We have been hearing about Raids, mostly in larger cities, of agents arresting individuals who are undocumented or here or illegally. Did you know that the first wind turbines in New York State were in Madison County? They went online in the Town of Madison in 2000. Since then multiple wind farms and solar farms have popped up across our rural landscape. There are more projects on the horizon.
On the Milk House this week is a panel of members and leaders in our community who are concerned about how New York State is dealing with renewable energy. They are asking the State to give municipalities their right to "home rule" once again, and to slow down and take a real look at what zero emissions truly means for our communities.

We talk with new Historic Site Manager Paul Nazca and Interpretive Programs Assistant Jackie Roshia about the 50th Anniversary of Christmas at Lorenzo. This annual holiday celebration will feature a tour of the decorated mansion, refreshments, live music, and horse-drawn sleigh/wagon rides.
We travel a little further south to our neighbors at the Chenango County Historical Society and with the Earlville Opera House about some great holiday events they have coming up. Chenango County Historical Society's Parade of Trees begins December 1. Earlville Opera House has events through the end of the year including their Annual Holiday Sale beginning November 27.

Come out and walk in the steps of hundreds of abolitionists as they made their way from Canastota to Peterboro in 1835 to meet and establish the New York State Anti-Slavery Society. The Abolition Road walk is now in its 3rd year. It celebrates unity and shines a light on a largely unrecognized, pivotal moment in history of the abolition movement. We talk with Marilyn Higgins, a volunteer with the Erie Canalway National Corridor, who helped create the Abolition Road walk.

For many Emancipation Day signifies the day enslaved people were emancipated by their country or state, but for Peterboro, NY and those who know the hamlet’s history, it is a time to honor not only when New York emancipated enslaved peoples in 1827 but also great works of men and women such as Gerrit Smith.

This episode we discuss the recent TAP Survey report. The Teen Assessment Project (TAP) Survey is conducted every four years to gather hyper local information regarding the issues facing teens in our community. The 2022 survey marks the 7th survey and 20 years of data. Approximately 79% of the total population of students in Madison County School Districts took the survey. The report encompasses results to issues related to: student worries, alcohol, tobacco, other drug use, relationships, sexual behavior and mental health.
Tina Louis is the Director of the Madison County Youth Bureau and facilitator of the survey, she discusses some of the survey results. Lauren Davie Smith, the Program Director for BRiDGES/MCCASA, talks to us about how BRiDGES and other agencies look at the responses to see what programming could positively impact our youth.

On the first weekend of June his life is celebrated in the Village of Chittenango with three days of festivities called the Oz-Stravaganza. This year the event takes place May 31 - June 2.

Here in Madison County we are looking at how to advance EMS, but we can not do it alone. We need the support of not only of the public, and the County, but we need the support from the State. New York State Comptroller DiNapoli recently released a report stating that "more State involvement needed to address local Emergency Medical Services challenges." Madison County EMS was featured in that report for the work we are doing here.

Homelessness appears to be a growing issue across the United States. Unfortunately, the same can be said for small rural communities, such as Madison County. In 2023, the Department of Social Services served 247 homeless, which includes single men, single women, and families. Out of the 247 homeless individuals, only 49 were placed in temporary shelters, while the remaining 198 either refused assistance or made their own plans.
Addressing homelessness is not as simple as just putting a roof over someone's head for a night; it's about so much more. In this episode, Samantha sits down with William Nicholson, Community Services Director for Community Action Partnership for Madison County (CAP), and Sondra Shantel, Senior Welfare Employment Representative and Homeless Contact for Madison County Department of Social Services. They discuss homelessness in Madison County, the resources that are available, the process, and the issues.

Madison County Director of Community Mental Health Services Teisha Cook stops by the Milk House to talk about some out of the clinic ways Madison County Mental Health is addressing the well-being of our residents.
Madison County Mental Health serves approximately 1,800 clients. Services are provided in person, on the phone, or through telemedicine. If you or someone you know are in need of services simply call 315-366-2327. Also, the Crisis Line is available 24/7 by calling 315-366-2327 option 1.
During the 2022/2023 School Year, Madison County Mental Health partnered with 3 of our school districts to provide school clinic services. That program has expanded for the 2023/2024 school year. Learn how having services in the schools is impacting our youth.
Along with a mental health crisis, our Country also faces an opioid crisis. Madison County has teamed up with community partners to bring resources such as a mobile medication unit to Wampsville, expanding Naloxone availability and training, and most recently several housing projects to help with affordable housing.

February is Black History Month, a time when we honor the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout not only U.S. History, and that includes the rich history of Madison County. Did you know that Madison County is a high-risk radon county? Radon is a naturally occurring, cancer-causing radioactive gas. It rises up from underground and can accumulate inside your indoor spaces.
Radon may be a health risk to you and your family. It is a leading cause of lung cancer. Because you cannot see, smell, or taste radon gas, the only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test for it. Testing is one important action that requires little effort and only a few minutes of time. Approximately 40% of basements in Madison County homes may have elevated radon levels.
Madison County Public Health is offering eligible homeowners in Madison County a free radon test kit, while supplies last. Madison County residents may also request a free complete Healthy Homes check-up, which includes testing for radon, by calling 315-366-2526.
Another efficient prevention strategy is to use Radon Resistant New Construction (RRNC) techniques in building a new home. This costs a third to one half as much as radon mitigation.

With 14 days left before the NYS Budget is due, Madison County Officials revisit the eFMAP discussion and answer some of your questions.
If Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to withhold federal funds from Counties passes, owning property in New York State will be even more unaffordable. Madison County and fellow counties have been working with NYSAC to educate the public about the proposal to withhold $625 million in Medicaid funds from all of the New York Counties, which they have been receiving for 20 years. Currently the Counties have the backing of the NY legislature as we go into final budget negotiations.
In 2003, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced Federal Medicaid Assistance Percentage (eFMAP) created the state as a federal pass-thru to the counties and New York City. If enacted, Madison County, in just the first year, 2023, would be required to spend an additional $833,000. And then starting in 2024 an estimated additional $1.6 million a year. That would increase property taxes by at least 4.5% next year. If taxes are not increased, the Madison County Board of Supervisors faces the difficult decision of what services are cut to make up that money.
The Madison County Milk House once again has brought together Chairman John M. Becker, County Administrator Mark Scimone, and Madison County Commissioner of DSS Mike Fitzgerald to talk about the impact losing $1.6 million in federal funding would mean for residents, and what you can do to help spread the word.
