Jonah became angry when God relented of his wrath, having mercy upon Nineveh (Jonah 4:1) specifically because he knew God would be a merciful and gracious God. Jesus, in Matthew 12:40-41, responds to the Pharisees, likening himself to Jonah in his bearing (and in his being!) the word of God, and his death and resurrection. Yet Jesus says, “something greater than Jonah is here.” (Matt. 12:41). Jesus not only speaks the word of God, he is the Word of God, bearing sin, bringing both judgement and mercy.
