Our guest Dr. Sarah Griffith Lund shares personal stories and other important information on mental health advocacy within faith communities to create awareness and support for those who may be struggling with various mental health issues.

Among the topics discussed are the importance of preaching about mental health to encourage people to seek help and the significance of Mental Health Month in May. Dr. Griffith Lund also highlights the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as a source for trained volunteers who can share their stories and other helpful information.

Churches can offer educational programs and support groups for those dealing with mental health challenges and caregivers. There is also the "WISE" program, which is a ten-step process for churches to become more welcoming and supportive to people with mental health challenges.

Among the most important issues discussed is breaking the stigma of mental illness and acknowledging that people with mental illnesses are blessed and not forsaken. Mental health ministry can be an outreach opportunity to show the love of Jesus to the community and to create a truly welcoming and supportive environment.

Parents also need to closely monitor their children's online activities to ensure their safety. The Internet can provide such connections, but it can also be harmful. Churches can unintentionally be places where judgment towards children's behavior can occur. Therefore, some churches have created spaces and programs that are welcoming to children who may have ADHD, autism, or sensory issues. Additionally, mental health ministry could be created within faith communities to further address these issues and create welcoming environments for everyone.

To combat the suicide epidemic and gun violence associated with mental health issues, partnerships with other organizations such as schools, social service agencies, and healthcare facilities are necessary.

Faith communities can provide spiritual support groups for mental health, with guidelines available from the United Church of Christ.

The emphasis is that all people are loved, and mental health issues can begin to manifest even in infancy. Eliminating barriers for people with mental health issues is essential for creating welcoming environments in faith communities. Churches need to be proactive about the mental health of their members and the community they serve. By taking action, mental health ministry can be an outreach opportunity to show the love of Jesus to the community.

The Free Store, a flagship ministry of CD4AP, provides free clothing and household items to 20,000 persons each year. Over the past 17 years, CD4AP has developed $125 million worth of affordable housing. CD4AP operates a variety of health and wellness initiatives and is deeply involved in youth development programming. The All People’s Fresh Market provides fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 350 families every day and has grown to be one of the largest distribution site of free food in central Ohio. Much of this work improving social determinants of health is done in close collaboration with Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Rev. Edgar is the founding pastor of the United Methodist Church for All People that is closely affiliated with CD4AP. This remarkably diverse congregation is comprised primarily of low-income persons. An ordained pastor for 45 years, he has previously served as a district superintendent and dean of the cabinet in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church.

In retirement, Rev. Edgar is serving as the half-time president of Columbus Housing Enterprise (CHE), a new non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve naturally occurring affordable housing. CHE is acquiring apartment complexes valued at $100 million which will be operated to ensure the rents remain affordable for decades to come.

Rev. Edgar has a Master of Divinity degree, cum laude from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s degree in sociology, magna cum laude from Miami University. He has been an adjunct faculty member at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.

Episode 050 of To Be Encouraged is part one of a two part interview with Tricia Owens and Heather Hilbert from the organization Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Part one is Episode 049.

Heather Hilbert did not grow up in the church. She came to faith as an adult after attending a class in a

local UMC church with a pastor who made sure that no question was off limits. She has served on staff

at St Luke’s UMC in Indianapolis as Director of Children’s Ministries and now works for the INUMC

conference as a Conference Assistant to the Southeast & West districts.

In early 2018, after the mass shooting in a local church in Sutherland Springs, TX and the mass shooting

at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, just a few short months later, Heather moved from a

participant in the gun violence prevention movement to a leadership position within Moms Demand

Action for Gun Sense in America. For the past 5 years, she has served in multiple roles for the Moms

Indiana chapter including Federal Legislative lead, focusing on and advocating for better gun policy in

the United States and particularly here in Indiana.

She spends many days at our Statehouse, giving testimony and meeting with legislators, while building

teams of advocates across the state. She is a gun owner who believes we can honor the 2nd Amendment

rights of Americans while also protecting our communities in better ways. She currently serves as the

Chapter Leader for Indiana and most recently led the first Moms Demand Action Advocacy Day at the

Statehouse since the pandemic began, training and advocating beside Moms volunteers from across the

state.

Her personal faith demands not only her heart but her voice and privilege for others. She is involved in

various projects and social justice causes including gun violence prevention, hunger & housing

insecurity, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Tricia Owens is a mom of two and works as a training systems designer for the federal

government. After her neighbor shot and killed himself in front of her and her husband, Tricia put

her trauma to work and began searching for significant ways to engage in gun violence

prevention. In early 2018, she joined Moms Demand Action, finding purpose in the meaningful

work of advocating for better, safer gun laws.

After joining the organization as a volunteer, Tricia quickly moved into several leadership roles

including Indiana Be SMART for Kids Lead and Indiana Survivor Membership Lead. Tricia

brings her professional excellence in training to her Moms work. She has given BeSMART

presentations to dozens of different community groups, including school administrations, police

departments, PTOs and more. This critical training, a 501c3 arm of Moms Demand Action,

trains adults about the importance of safely and securely storing firearms. Although she’s worn

many hats in the organization, her main passion in this GVP fight is keeping guns out of the

hands of children.

She currently serves on the Indiana state leadership team and is the Hamilton County, Indiana

Local Group Co-Lead where she leads, educates and engages volunteers from across the

county in the life saving work of Moms Demand Action.
