Welcome to The Now Life Podcast, where we are passionate about encouraging people to experience the abundant life Jesus came to give. The Now Life is a term that describes the life we have the privilege to live NOW as disciples of Jesus. We do this for the Glory of God and for the sake of others until we see Jesus face to face.
SURPRISE! Welcome to our special bonus episodes of The Now Life. These episodes are a continuation of bonus episodes released back in April. Back in March our church (Desert Springs Community Church) sent a team of 10 adults led by Pastor Jamie Engram to serve with our missionaries Wade + Shannon Cooperrider in Nicaragua. They had a VBS, shared testimonies and sermons, handed out flyers, swam in a volcano lake and even sang a special praise song in Spanish. Most importantly, they got to see God work in some amazing ways as they and the team at La Paz Centro worked together to share the gospel with their community. All told, they had 120 kids on the last day of VBS that heard the gospel and have heard of six that made professions of faith. Shawn wanted to take some time to talk with a few of their team members to hear about their experience and how they saw God work.

Today on The Now Life podcast Shawn and Josh are continuing the discussion on creating a disciple making culture. This episode focuses on the language we use to express our culture. Language matters and is important because we want people to understand what we mean. We are communicating mission and purpose and clearly defining words. We are telling the stories of what God is doing and celebrating how the culture is changing people and producing disciples. Remember, Jesus is our model. His message and His methods are perfect and need to be what guides our behaviors as we follow Jesus and make disciples. Go live The Now Life!

Shawn and Josh are continuing the discussion on creating a disciple making culture. This episode focuses on how the right behaviors help to form culture. No matter what we believe or say we believe, our culture is what we make a priority and do. We may value the right things and tell all the right stories, but if we don’t also do the right things we won’t change. Remember, Jesus is our model. His message and His methods are perfect and need to be what guides our behaviors as we follow Jesus and make disciples. Live like Jesus lived!

Meet Josh Fricovsky! In this episode Shawn and Josh discuss how they met and began walking together to become more like Jesus. Josh encourages everyone to humble themselves and embrace the fact that we need other disciples in our life who are following Jesus' methods to help us become more like Jesus. It is good to be passionate about learning, but we must be intentional to do the things we are learning so that we can actually grow. Josh speaks about this journey and the steps he was encouraged to take for his own personal transformation and ultimately the glory of God and the sake of others.

This week on The Now Life we are continuing the discussion on creating a disciple making culture. Last episode we said culture could be defined by saying “It’s How We Do Things Around Here.” Our culture reflects our mission. Our Values, Beliefs, Behaviors, Language etc. should demonstrate our desire to accomplish that mission. Creating a culture that’s connected to our mission is vital! We must start with defining what we are trying to accomplish and work backwards. A Disciple making culture is meant to produce disciples of Jesus. Listen in as we discuss the picture of a disciple and why having a clear picture matters.

Welcome back to The Now Life! This season is going to be awesome! We are going to be focusing on how culture is an environment that produces something. In this episode Shawn and Sam begin the conversation speaking about creating a disciple making culture. They talk about good food, throwing rolls and more importantly, how your culture isn’t what you say is important, but what you actually do. Culture could be defined by saying “it’s how we do things around here.” Culture really matters! As the church, we really need to figure this out. Listen in and hear the first episode of this series.
Action Step:
Ask yourself, does my life reflect the culture Jesus requires of His church?

Welcome back to The Now Life! This is the last episode being released this season. Listen in and hear Shawn and Sam talk about how The Gift of Christmas outreach event went at Desert Springs. Also, Shawn and Sam discuss how we can ask questions about Christmas to help us get to spiritual conversations during this wonderful time of year. Shawn and Sam have loved talking with you this fall and hope to talk again soon!
Send us an email to thenowlife@dscchurch.com and let us know what creative things you plan to do this Christmas to help others hear about Jesus.
Tips for haring the Gospel during Christmas time:
Ask questions!
· What does Christmas mean to you?
· What do you believe is the true meaning of Christmas?
· Many people celebrate the birth of Jesus during Christmas time. Do you think the birth of Jesus has anything to do with Christmas?
· Do you know why people celebrate the birth of Jesus?
· Are you familiar with the Bible story of Jesus birth?
· Can I read you a very short portion of the birth story and get your opinion of it? I believe the story reveals a very good reason to celebrate.
· Read Matthew 1:18-21 (it’s roughly 4 sentences)
· What do you think/feel about what I just read?
· According to the Bible (what we just read), why did Jesus come? (Read v21 again if necessary). “To save His people from their sins.”
· What do you think it means to be “saved from our sins?”
· How would you define sin?
· Why do we need to be saved from our sins?

This week on The Now Life Trevor Schalow and Sam Washington join Shawn in the studio to talk about following Jesus. The men discuss ways God has moved in their lives when the decision was made to trust and follow Jesus. They talk about the need for intimate community where vulnerability and accountability can be experienced. Transformation can really happen in relationships where people trust and love one another. The following questions are discussed in this episode:
Is following Jesus really an expectation or just a suggestion?
In what ways has your life changed after you decided to intentionally follow Jesus?
How does helping others follow Jesus impact our growth as a disciple?
Are you ready to take your next step? How can we help?

This week on The Now Life Shawn and Sam take some time to discuss the importance of understanding the decision that is being made when someone is placing their faith in Jesus. In evangelism training they use an illustration named “The Call” to help people understand that forgiveness is just the beginning of a relationship with God and that Jesus is calling everyone to follow Him. We hope that you are encouraged by this discussion!
Here is “The Call” that Shawn and Sam are speaking about in the episode.
The Call
Being forgiven is just the beginning. Jesus is calling everyone to follow him. He is Lord and that means He is in charge. He desires a relationship with us now. Jesus came so we can have a life filled with hope, meaning, and purpose. As we walk in relationship with God and follow Jesus as Lord, He will transform us to be more like Him. He gives us a new heart, a new spirit, and a new love for people. He teaches us everything we need to know. This life begins now by placing your faith in Jesus. Are you ready to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior?

Welcome back to The Now Life! We have Sam Washington in the studio with us. Shawn and Sam take some time to discuss the importance of understanding the cost of discipleship. Jesus has called us to follow Him. He says that we must deny ourselves and take up our cross. He calls us to a new way of living. He says, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it” (Mark 8:35). As we follow Jesus, we learn that He desires us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. He wants us to obey Him. He expects to be number one in our life. Until we fall in love with Jesus and follow Him the way He calls us to we will miss out on the abundant life He came to give.

Hello Friends! We are back with our last episode of the season. Lord willing, we are planning to be back with you in September at the latest. During this episode Mark and Shawn discuss how we are called to Share Jesus with our lips when we live on mission. The church is meant to be a people committed to the mission of Jesus. There is nothing greater we can do with our time than to help others fall in love with Jesus.
A couple things to consider as you listen in:
Why should we share Jesus with our lips? Why does it matter?
How can people be saved if they don’t know Jesus?
If we don’t share Jesus with our lips who will?
Church, We have been saved to “proclaim the excellencies of God.”
Go Live The Now Life!

Welcome back to The Now Life! Today Shawn and Mark continue their discussion on why relationships matter. Relationships are where transformation can happen and where believers can experience encouragement and accountability to be faithful to Jesus. Jesus modeled relationship for the purpose of discipleship. So, why don’t we see more Christians in purposeful disciple-making relationships? Trust…Vulnerability…Transparency…Sin...All of the above? Take some time and listen to this important conversation.

Welcome to Season 2 of The Now Life podcast!Shawn Jones officially brought on Mark Syhlowy as a co-host, and we think it is going to be a great season.
Shawn and Mark discuss the importance and blessing of hearing God’s word and doing it. Jesus says in Matthew 7:24-25, “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against the house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.” The life of a follower of Jesus begins with hearing the gospel and responding by faith. When we respond by faith alone to Jesus’ words to repent and believe the gospel we are saved! We are delivered from the dominion of darkness into the kingdom of Jesus (Col 1:13). We begin to build our house/life on the Rock/Jesus! Once we respond appropriately and affirmatively to the call to trust in Jesus, we must continue to follow Him. As we follow Jesus, He will teach us everything we need to know so we can do the things we need to do in order to be transformed into His image and experience the abundant life Jesus came to give. The blessing of God is found in the obedience to God.
Go Live The Now Life!
Application Steps:
Listen to this podcast and respond to the gospel. This is your first and most important step of wisdom. If you need to talk to us about this step, please email us or call 623-435-2105 and ask for Shawn.
Begin reading the word of God. Get a Bible or download a Bible app. If you need a Bible let us know and we will get you one as a gift. Start reading through one of the books of the Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. Go slow, maybe a chapter a day. Ask God to teach you and do what He says. We will talk more about Engaging with God through His word next episode.

Shawn and Mark continue the conversation on what it looks like to follow Jesus. They discuss “ghosting” Jesus and why we struggle to follow Him the way He has called us to. Jesus came to seek and save the lost for a purpose. There is no plan B! Plan B is ultimately a type of idol that typically leads to damage in the believers life and the lives of those around him or her. This is such a fitting episode for finishing up the year and season of The Now Life. Listen in and be encouraged to set your eyes on Jesus and walk with Him. Learn to let Him rule and you’ll experience the abundant life He has for you. We will be taking a little time off and will be back, Lord willing, in January 2023. Go live The Now Life!
Here are some questions Mark shared with us that can help to diagnose our heart’s desire to to be close to Jesus. The questions can help us see what’s keeping us from following Him. Take some time and wrestle with the questions below to expose any area we need freedom in to follow Jesus.
What do I feel I cannot survive or function without? Where do I spend my time and money with the least amount of effort? What do I think and talk about the most? Which biblical commands am I most reluctant to obey? What things anger me the most? How would I fill in the blank? I cannot and will not be happy unless _______________.

Welcome to this week’s episode of The Now Life! King Jesus spoke one of the most important and transformational sentences ever. This sentence only consisted of two words. Jesus said “Follow Me.” Shawn and Mark take time in this episode to discuss the impact of obeying Jesus’ command to follow Him. They also share some special stories of how Jesus has changed them and used their obedience to impact other people’s lives for eternity.

In this episode Mark Syhlowy and Shawn Jones discuss the compassion of Jesus as we continue to define the picture of a disciple. In Matthew 9 we see Jesus going through the cities and villages healing, teaching, and proclaiming the gospel. He looks upon the crowds and has compassion on them. As we continue to grow as disciples of Jesus we are called to have hearts like Him. Listen in, laugh, and be encouraged to live the Now Life!
If you have a story of how God has worked through you while living on mission please email us. We look forward to hearing from you!

Happy Monday! We are back with another episode of The Now Life. In this episode we spend time beginning to clarify some pictures we see in the life of a disciple. When we have a clear picture of what discipleship looks like we can work to become the followers Jesus has called us to be. Real transformation happens when we live intentionally with others according to Jesus for the glory of God. The pictures we discuss are:
Life-on-Life - The picture of small intimate relationships where transformation can occur
Disciple of Jesus - The picture of what Jesus wants us to become
A Race - “The Now Life” - The picture of our life until we see Jesus face-to-face
How can we do Life-on-Life together so that I can help you do Life-on-Life with others in order to make disciples of Jesus and live the Now Life?

We're back! On this episode I am joined by Janelle Lloyd and Liz Contreras. We get to hear about how having a relationship with Jesus changed their heart for God and their desire to follow Jesus as Lord. So many Christians come to Jesus for what He has to offer and unfortunately leave Jesus and His expectations at the altar. Tune in and hear about how God has worked to transform these ladies' lives through the recognition of relationship, obedience, and ultimately their love for Him and their love for the lost. Janelle and Liz talk to us about how God has brought them through the journey of sharing their faith for the glory of God and the salvation of others.
Here is an important take away from this episode: “If you want to experience the Now Life, that life Jesus came to give, Be obedient and do what He says."

On this episode we discuss the importance of denying ourselves to be able to live out the “Great Commandment.” Loving God and loving others is what we are both saved and called to do. The abundant life Jesus came to offer can only be experienced as we follow Him in a loving and obedient relationship. As we follow Jesus, we experience Him and begin to demonstrate our love for God. As we deny ourselves knowing that God loves us, we can love God and begin to love others as ourselves.
Below are some important evangelistic values that will help you as you live The Now Life and work to love those people in your life.
Values for an Evangelistic Lifestyle:
As disciples, we strive to live by the following values that will guide and shape the culture of an evangelistic lifestyle.
Demonstrate Love – We will show a selfless love for God and others.
Follow Jesus Intimately – As we follow Jesus closely with a loving obedience, He will teach us everything we need to know.
Sacrificial Willingness – We are willing to be uncomfortable for God’s glory and for the sake of others.
Live Available – We are both interruptible and intentional with our time for eternal purposes.
Depend on God – We rely on God with a humble attitude that demonstrates faith in His character, word, and power.
Here is an important take away from this episode: “If you want to live the abundant life that Jesus came to give now, you must deny yourself, and take up your cross and follow Jesus.”

On this episode we got to hang out with two of my favorite people, Mark Syhlowy and Tyler Pollard. You won’t want to miss this conversation! We took some time to discuss the generational effects of learning to share the gospel and living on mission. The guys get personal about how sharing their faith has affected them.
Here is an important takeaway from this episode: A vital part of living “The Now Life” means experiencing the joy of sharing the gospel with others and helping them to do the same.

Today's conversation on The Stories Collective is going to resonate with a lot of you and we're so glad for the opportunity to share it here! Our host Sarah Schalow is talking with our new friend Riley Gardell. Riley, a Texas native, moved to the Goodyear area in May of 2021 for his work as the Site Engineer at a solar farm. Riley talks with Sarah about how a lot of times we gravitate towards testimonies that are about radical change and miracles but so many of us by the grace of God have known Him since childhood and can't necessarily relate to those incredible stories. In this conversation, Riley shares about the power and the blessing that is found in the testimonies of those who came to know God at a young age. Riley walks us through coming to know the Lord as a 2nd grader, the faithfulness of his parents in raising him in a Christian home, coming to a more solid faith in college, being baptized here at Desert Springs and how he has seen the gracious hand of the Lord over his entire life, even in the moments that might be considered "boring." We think this is a very relatable story and we can't wait for you to hear from Riley's heart!

Welcome to The Now Life podcast! Today is our very first episode and we are discussing what "The Now Life” is and why we should live it. “The Now Life” is a term that describes the life we have the privilege to live now as disciples of Jesus (John 10:10).
Bill Hull, the co-founder of The Bonhoeffer Project said, “Since our purpose is to be disciples and to make disciples, nothing matters more than our understanding of what it means to be saved.” Today we spend some time talking about what it means to be saved so that we can also understand why Jesus saved us.
The greatest experience we will ever have with God this side of heaven is living The Now Life where we are following Jesus and helping others to do the same! Important takeaway from today’s episode - "We have been saved and set free to be a disciple who makes disciples." Listen in and be encouraged to experience the abundant life Jesus came to give!
