I don't know you, but you might need to hear this.

Your life today is entirely different from where you'll be in ten years. It can be worse, or better. One thing I know from experience: it will not be the same.

I've moved up and down. Sliding down is always easier than climbing back up, whether the challenge is physical, emotional, mental or financial.

Fact of life is you will move up and down that spectrum too! That is beyond your control. It might not be fair, but it is where you find yourself.

Here's what I can control: what I do and how I show up to meet the day's challenges. I know it can be hard to take what life throws at me and make it better.

With the help of family, friends and strangers I've pulled myself up a bit higher every time I fell, and I honestly believe you can too.

Now, wherever you are today: friend, I believe in you. Show up and do the work.

What matters to me? That's a question I don’t ask myself often enough. Busy with the hustle and bustle of life. It’s also the key to defining what I need to do, when I show up to do the work. You see, the 'work' isn't merely my job. It's what I do to create value for me my loved ones. It’s making breakfast, a 20-minute jog, crafting flash fiction. This 'work' is my expression of a life of substance. And how do I cultivate such a life? I 'show up and do the work.' I commit myself to what nourishes well-being, brings joy, and fosters my growth. There’s nothing special about banana pancakes, but the joy they bring to my boys makes every minute spent in the kitchen worth it, every time. Am I showing up for life? Am I living my values? Life isn’t a mindless grind. I know what truly matters to me and I dedicate time and energy to those pursuits: health, family, career and creativity. Not the results, but the act of training, of caring, of delivering and of creating: thise are fulfilling. That is why I wake up, step and the work. Every day. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yourfriendtoby/message

Whenever I approach a remote project, large or small, I ask myself three questions:

  • What is the deliverable?
  • What do I want my collaborators to contribute?
  • By when does it need to be done?

Remote is less forgiving than in-person when it comes to slacking or being ineffective. To work better with remote colleagues, create clarity, align expectations and agree on timelines.
