Another gift in John’s journey is that he is now a top drug addiction expert, and he has learned many alternative methods of healing along the way. He even owns a holistic clinic that does several different forms of treatment in Florida. If you are curious or looking to heal yourself, like me, sit back and take it all in. It is quite an interesting talk.

This episode is about Dr. Nicole Bradford sharing her wisdom of taking one step or one day at a time to achieve what you really want in life. Dr. Bradford discusses how what you say to yourself can either lead you closer to your goals or push you father away. You have the power to change the situation you are in. By taking one step or one day at a time, what you want in life is available to you.
Dr. Bradford discusses tells you how to set 3 goals for yourself as well as 8 strategies for life. Additionally, she discusses topics such as how you have to learn to confront yourself. Stop accepting what you say to yourself as an automatic truth. As yourself, is it true? Is it advice you would give to your best friend? If not, then change what you are saying to yourself right away. Additionally, advocate for yourself. Stand up for yourself. You are worth the effort.
She also gives an analogy of walking through target and picking up things we don’t need or even want really. It is so similar to what we do in life, isn’t it? People say something mean or hurtful, and we put it in our basket. It is amazing to me how very little of the good things seem to go in the basket. We need to watch what we allow to go in our baskets for sure. I love how she also says that if someone says something that can be hurtful or limiting to you, just say you know what, I disagree and I am giving that back to you. I absolutely love that…even if you only say it in your mind, it is a powerful tool.
Dr. Nicole D. Bradford is energetic presenter that has overcome several challenges in her life including witnessing domestic violence as a child, workplace labels/limitations, supervising while young, and desiring success and being labeled and disliked by peers, and family members (both in-laws and outlaws). This episode is about Kevin’s Last Walk with his dad, Barry Adkins. Barry’s story is about a father who lost his son from alcohol poisoning and who has been on a journey to find the meaning in that loss and turning that horrible experience into something wonderful or something “good” as Barry would say. Barry carried his 18-year-old son’s ashes in a backpack 1400 miles on foot to lay him in his final resting place and also bring attention to the dangers of alcohol poisoning. He has been educating people and saving lives ever since his son’s death.
It’s the type of loss, that if you haven’t been through it, you don’t even want to imagine it. However, Barry has discovered a way to find meaning in the loss of his son by educating people on the dangers of binge drinking alcohol, especially young people. Most of us hear about the dangers of drinking and driving, but the truth is, alcohol is toxic to the body, and too much of it can lead to horrible things, even death. This isn’t a message about not drinking alcohol, it is more about just being responsible with how much you consume in one sitting if you do drink.
The larger story of Barry finding good in the profound loss of his son is that Barry’s journey has brought him connections, learning, healing, and maybe even a little adventure, not to mention all of the people Barry is impacting and saving along the way. I am sure he is saving countless lives by educating people of the dangers of binge drinking.
Barry is an inspirational speaker who has shared his story with over 50,000 students and parents across the country, and he wants to continue sharing his story at schools, churches, on podcasts, etc. It is story that needs to be told!

If you have pondered these questions, and even if you haven’t, you should listen to the experiences that Terry has encountered, and the knowledge and wisdom he has to share. Terry is not only living an uncommon and extraordinary life, but he is doing it even though he has been battling cancer for the last 10 years and still is by the way. He has some advice and wisdom for all of us, that I personally feel we should all try to pay attention to and learn from.
You’ll hear him say during the podcast that he doesn’t have a big red S painted on his chest, but I think he secretly may. I have never met someone who is going through so much, and enduring so much pain, and yet, he still wants to help others daily. What an aspirational human being he is!

The Art of Parenting Adult Children with Lori Badry
Many of us have children who are now adults or will be before we know it. There is a difference in how you parent your children when they are minors versus how you parent them as adults. The role you play in their lives, whether we like it or not, changes. It must change.

Lori had to learn the transition to parenting adult children the hard way. She made a mistake, and it forced the need changes in her life. She wanted God to put instructions on a neon sign, but instead He told her to be still and look inward. Through a journey of personal development, growing closer with the Holy Spirt, and growing closer with her husband she has found peace and balance in her life. Now she wants to share with other parents how to navigate parenting adult children so that they don’t find themselves in a perfect storm the way she did. She is so open and vulnerable and so willing to help. You will enjoy listening to her journey.

With empathy, you are quick to listen and slow to judge. In today’s world, it's vice versa, people are fast to judge and they barely listen. And when they listen, they do with the intention of replying and not understanding. That’s how we miss a golden opportunity to support and encourage each other when going through tough times.
It's also important to note that empathy is only effective when reasonable limits are set. If you get too attached to a problem being faced by another person, you are most likely unable to help the person going through it. Empathy should be approached with caution and intention for it to be a useful path to encouragement and support.
In this episode, we’ll dive deep into empathy and the potential impact it can create. We’ll also discuss its different forms and the qualities of each of them. Additionally, you’ll hear about how to best deploy it to create a maximum positive impact on those who need it.
Tune in to this fourth episode of The Beauty in the Mess to hear about the importance of empathy.

Mental health and addiction are big problems that until recently had not been getting enough attention. People going through them were stigmatized and that shame made it difficult for them to seek the help they really needed. At the moment, there is less stigma and many support groups are now available to those who need help. However, there is still a lot remaining to be done to increase the effectiveness and accessibility of the treatment programs.
Today, I’m glad to be joined by Rita Tattersall, a licensed addiction and mental health counselor. Rita’s journey is unique: she struggled with substance use disorder and now uses her experience to help others who are facing the same problems she faced.

Fear is designed to keep us safe and alert us when we try to venture into circumstances that can result in mental or physical harm. If you want to reach specific goals that seem out of reach and require you to step out of your comfort zone, then fear will be the first obstacle you encounter. In many cases, people have failed to even take that first step out of their box because they are overwhelmed by it. However, fear also plays an important role in keeping us alert and prepared for potentially dangerous situations.
In most cases, fear is used to justify not stepping out of the comfort zone. It's a story with vivid imagery and exaggerated consequences that people tell their minds to help justify inaction. While you cannot eliminate fear from your life completely, you can learn to manage it, lessen it, or use it as leverage.
Today, I’m happy to uncover the anatomy of fear and how you can work through it in a positive as well as productive way. We’ll talk about the different tools that are at your disposal when faced with the different types of fear. We’ll also look at why you are attached to your comfort zone and how you can step out of it with confidence.

Growing up, we put together the pieces of our identity mainly based on what people say about us. What we hear is what we become. At the same time, a subconscious process is running in the background; our brain is listening and paying particular attention to the negatives. Why? Because our brain's primary function is to keep us alive, it might also be dangerous if something sounds harmful. That's why compliments, praises, and eulogies pass by, barely noticed, and insults, mean comments, and humiliating remarks stick.
After realizing the words, I kept repeating in my head about who I was contributed to building the feeling of unworthiness I was trapped in, I decided to step up for myself. I realized I allowed other people's words to put me in a box, and I also taught those around me to keep me there.
Today, I share the transformational journey I started in the past few years and the moment I gave myself permission to change, get out of my box, and let go of insecurities, self-doubt, and the limiting beliefs that stopped me from becoming who I was meant to be. I also share a simple yet effective seven-step process to help you eliminate the parts of your identity that no longer serve you.
Tune in and join me in this first episode of The Beauty in the Mess, and let's walk hand in hand on this self-discovery path.
