In this episode, Mental Management Coaches, Troy Bassham and Heather Sumlin, dive into one of the biggest mental traps in competition: prejudging your opponent. Whether it's thinking someone is unbeatable, assuming another competitor is struggling, or believing a player always folds under pressure, these assumptions pull your focus away from what truly matters — your own performance.

Using principles from the "Control What You Can Control" Mental Management worksheet by Troy Bassham and Podium Performance, we explore how elite competitors learn to respect everyone, fear no one, and stay committed to executing their process instead of reacting to others.

If you've ever found yourself intimidated by competition, distracted by another player's performance, or emotionally tied to outcomes, this conversation will help you refocus on the one thing you can always control: your game.

In this episode of the With Winning in Mind Podcast, Troy Bassham and Heather Sumlin break down a powerful mindset shift: why focusing on solutions is far more effective than focusing on problems.

Many competitors get stuck analyzing what went wrong—but the longer you stay focused on the problem, the harder it is to perform at your best. Instead, elite performers train themselves to quickly shift their attention to solutions.

Through the Mental Management® system, Troy and Heather explain how this shift leads to faster recovery, better focus, and more consistent performance.

The conversation also includes a candid look at baseball spring training, including what's going through a pitcher's mind after a wild pitch—and how staying solution-focused can prevent one mistake from turning into many.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why focusing on the problem holds you back
  • How to quickly shift into a solution-focused mindset
  • What great competitors think immediately after a mistake
  • How to recover faster and stay locked in under pressure

If you've ever replayed mistakes in your mind during competition, this episode will give you a better way forward.

Here is a summary of the key points from the video:

There are 3 main ways to train: training for feel (focusing on technique), training for the shot (incorporating the full mental process), and training for the round (simulating a full competition). Training for feel is good for beginners/intermediates to build the physical technique subconsciously. As you advance, you should incorporate more of the full mental process into your training, such as a pre-shot routine, point of focus, and post-shot review. For sports like golf and clay shooting, you can do drills that build confidence, like the 5-ball drill and alternating targets drill. The goal is to train the full mental and technical process so that you can trust it and perform under pressure in competition rather than just try harder. The video emphasizes the importance of training the mind and body together to build confidence and perform your best in competition.

Troy and Lannys emphasize the importance of the reinforcement phase in overcoming pressure in competition. The reinforcement phase is directly related to self-image, which affects one's opinion of one's ability to perform tasks correctly.

Focusing on solutions and reinforcing positive outcomes in the reinforcement phase can help reduce pressure and improve the probability of future success.

The key is consistently applying the three-step reinforcement phase approach: evaluate the task, reinforce the positive, or learn from the negative, then let it go and move on.

In this discussion, Troy Bassham and Lanny explore the primary reasons athletes struggle to win, focusing on overthinking and over-trying. They explain that overthinking complicates mental processes and creates doubt, while over-trying involves excessive effort that can hinder performance. Both issues are common among athletes, especially veterans, who may become over-informed by multiple coaching sources. The conversation emphasizes mastering a consistent mental process and execution over worrying about outcomes. They suggest that athletes should focus on their execution rather than the results to improve performance and achieve success.

This video is a conversation between Troy and Lanny Bassham about performance and how it is generated. They discuss the observation that 95% of winning is done by 5% of participants and explore why this is the case. They talk about their experiences in sports like international rifle shooting and how they realized that there was something the elite performers were doing that they weren't. They introduce the performance model, which consists of the conscious, subconscious, and self-image parts. They explain that self-image is crucial for performance and discuss how it can be built through positive imprints and reinforcement. They also touch on the importance of analyzing performance and focusing on solutions rather than mistakes. The conversation concludes with a discussion on creating an environment that fosters growth and the impact of external imprints on self-image.

Mental Management coaches Troy Bassham and Heather Sumlin have been doing the "With Winning in Mind" podcast for almost two years and from time to time we take questions from viewers.

Here are the questions we answer:

From Troy's book Attainment - One of the principles is that elite performers work on all three areas of performance, others focus only on their subconsious ability. How do I get out of my own head to start working on my conscious and Self-Image?

I found that most people don't like to talk about success and they don't want to hear about my success. How do I discover how it is that I can continue build good friends and people around me while getting a getting a good imprint on my Self-Image and not sound cocky?

You have talked a lot about the Performance Analysis Journal I decided to get one and I am struggling in two areas - first is my percentage of time I ran my mental system and my technical system correctly. How strictly should I be keeping up with that and is it a percentage of feel? Second - Can you help me to come up with a way to formulate my what I learned today and what I did well today statements?

Elite performers focus on what they should do, others focused on what happened. How do I keep myself from feeling like I'm focusing on what I think should have happened?

I've been runner up the last 5 years in my competition and I'm started to get defeated. I love my sport but I just don't know if I can win the big one. How can I stay motivated? Or is it time for me to retire?

Bio: Kenda has spent her life on the back of a horse. She started competing at the ripe old age of four and continued all throughout her childhood in both Western and English disciplines. After an apprenticeship in Texas with some of the country’s top cutting horse trainers, she was introduced to the sport of mounted shooting in California, where she qualified for the World Championship after only her 4th competition.

Since those early days, she’s developed a reputation as an accomplished trainer of both horses and people, won just about everything there is to win in the competitive arena and cultivated a thriving business dedicated to introducing others to her sport. Her career includes not only training and instruction but product development, working with renowned companies such as Circle Y Saddles, Professional’s Choice, Uberti Firearms and Safariland to create products for the sport. She is also a published author, and wrote a how-to training book, along with numerous articles for multiple industry related publications.

Her proudest accomplishment remains winning the title of Overall World Champion, becoming the first woman to best her male competitors. She did this riding Justin, a former trail horse that she nurtured from scratch, building him into a phenomenal equine athlete. Since then, Kenda won the Overall World title three more times on both Justin and her mare Sparky. She has also taken the Overall National Champion title six times on both horses combined.

Nathan Piper Bio: Nathan Piper was born in Bryan, Texas, where he grew up showing reining horses as a youth in American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), and 4-H competitions. Reining is a western equestrian event originating from the working ranch days. It demonstrates maneuvers that horses and cowboys would use daily on a ranch. However over time it has evolved into a sport discipline, where a horse and a rider perform a pattern of maneuvers and compete for monetary prizes.

Born into a family and community of Aggies, Nathan attended Texas A&M University. During his junior year of college he decided to forgo his non-pro status and become an NRHA Professional. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1999 and married his wife Jean in 2000. After graduation, the newlyweds moved to Whitesboro, Texas, where Nathan Piper Reining Horses resides now. Over the next few years Nathan and Jean welcomed two beautiful daughters, Millie and Etta, who can be heard loudest among the cheering section.

Nathan made his first NRHA Open Futurity Finals in 2010, and the following years have been a success with several horses, most recently Patriot, who Nathan piloted to the 2022 Run For A Million victory as well as the NRBC Open L4 Co-Championship and the AQHA World Championship in Junior Reining, both in 2019. Nathan is a multiple time NRHA Open Futurity and Derby finalist, a National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Champion, AQHA World Champion, and most recently the Run For A Million Champion. At the beginning of the 2022 show season, while qualifying for the Run For A Million, Nathan became an NRHA Million Dollar Rider.
