GOD has a tendency to use people that the world overlooks for His purposes in Kingdom work. We have felt that way most of our life. Today we talk about the power of GOD in the message of the Gospel, which can seem like foolishness to those who do not know Jesus: "For the foolishness of GOD is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of GOD is stronger than human strength." - 1 Cor. 1:25
What does the word covenant mean to you? It seems an old fashioned word or maybe one just used in religious circles. Today we chat about what it means to be in covenant relationship with GOD. Our relationship with GOD is just that, a relationship; not transactional, but a relationship which is transforming at its heart.

Hope. What does that word mean to you? Is it something in the realm of fairy tale land, or is it a real and living thing?
Today we look to the prophet Jeremiah to find hope even though arguably one of the most difficult chapters in the history of Israel in the Old Testament. He speaks of a hope that acknowledges the reality of life, not like those perpetual optimists who wouldn't believe Jerusalem could be destroyed. A hope through the storm.
GOD has been faithful in the past, HE is faithful now, and HE will be faithful in the future. That's a real hope!

Jesus + nothing = everything! Do we love Jesus with no strings attached? Do we follow because of who He is or what He can give? As we grow in our walk, may we learn to love with no strings attached.

The story of Jesus cursing the fig tree in the gospel of Mark may strike some as an odd story to include. We agree, but we take some time today to talk about why Mark has included this story and what it might mean for Christians today who pretend to be something they are not.
People crave authenticity. It is a human need. Are you an authentic person? God knows the real you anyway. Let's find freedom to be ourselves in Christ and His community of faith.
Philippians 4:13 - "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength" is one of the most misused quotes from the Bible. Today, we talk about contentment and peace as a fruit of thankfulness. We place Philippians 4:13 into its context, where Paul uses it to describe his ability to have contentment, whether he is full or hungry or has nothing or much.
The world teaches us to be unsatisfied with our current situation and that we need more or better things. In Christ, we can find contentment that brings peace no matter our circumstances.

Habakkuk lived in a time of political corruption, perverted justice, violence, and economic distress. Sound familiar? His open honesty before God are words we echo today. How long oh LORD?

The Old Testament can, at times, be intimidating. It doesn't have to be. In today's episode, we dive into the story of King Josiah and the prophetess Huldah. Josiah's responsive heart leads the kingdom of Judah back again to covenant relationship with God. His leadership guides the people. In addition, Huldah provides a key word directly from GOD to the people. What an incredible story of faithfulness by a woman in a culture and time where women were often relegated to the sidelines!

This week is National Salvation Army week in the United States, declared by President Eisenhower back in 1954. In today's episode we chat about the "I'll Fight" quote by The Salvation Army founder William Booth:
"While women weep, as they do now,

Today we begin our new series on Psalm 119. It is the longest chapter of Scripture, coming in at 176 verses. This Psalm is all about the word of God and how the word brings life to those who follow it. Join us on a journey into a section of the Bible which can be intimidating because of its length.
Easter Sunday or Resurrection Sunday requires us to look at the cross and the tomb. The cross mandates a response. The empty tomb begs an answer. Travel with us as we chat about different responses to the cross and the empty tomb.

David McKenna's insights on the whole of Nehemiah's leadership growth abound as we discuss how leaders mature. Leadership isn't positional authority or a job title. We can all grow in our skills of leadership whether we hold power and authority or not.
Nehemiah named a successor to take over operations in Jerusalem while he headed back to Persia. It did not go well. What can we learn from this?
Nehemiah had to transition from being an engineer building a wall to a governor rebuilding a city's political and administrational infrastructure. Those two jobs don't seem to require the same sort of skill set. As he grows in his role, Nehemiah has to learn to navigate different aspects of leadership.
As we think about organizational leadership one of the most important aspects is to take stock of the mission. Is what we do currently drive mission or have we gotten off course? Are we meeting the needs we have set out to meet? Does our day to day operations align with our moral and ethical compasses?
As we read parts of the Bible, it is easy to gloss over all that God had done to orchestrate the circumstances. In today's episode we talk a history about the time of Nehemiah and marvel at all of God's providence in working the story together.
And if God did it in the lives of people like Nehemiah and Esther and Ruth, He can and is providentially working in our lives as well. May that knowledge encourage you in your daily endeavors.

Still in our series on Nehemiah. In today's episode we discuss dealing with naysayers. You don't have to accept invitations to "fights" or conversations. Also as we wait for the LORD, it doesn't mean we are to be idle. We show up ready to work.
What makes a leader? What skills are needed? What does leadership development look like? How does Nehemiah pull together such a varied team to build the wall of Jerusalem?
While we don't pretend to know everything about leadership, enjoy our conversation on things we have learned from past experience. Often the best teacher for leadership is failure. Don't be afraid to learn from mistakes. Be humble to listen and learn.
Today finds us finally diving well into the life and event of Nehemiah. Looking at his way of handling the task God had called him to. As we think about leadership it is helpful to be reminded about the difference between doing good things and doing God things. Sometimes we get too caught up in doing good things and lose sight of what God has called us to.

As we think about leadership we realize there are many factors that make up a leader. Context and character are two such factors. Who are you? Where have you come from? Where are you currently? In addition David McKenna speaks of crucible moments - those that shape our leadership - times of struggle or hardship where leaders learn competencies in how to lead.
What are your crucible moments? How have you matured through those difficult times into the leader you are now? Nehemiah experienced the crucible of being an exile under the authority of a pagan king. Through his context, character, and crucibles he learned some competencies which place him in a position to lead.

In today's episode we finish our conversation on the letter of 1 John. There are a few passages in today's section that can be troublesome for interpretation. We always need to make sure as we look to understand what Scripture means that we look to the whole of the Bible. Does the interpretation line up with the rest of Scripture?
Our continuing conversation on 1 John takes us to chapter 4:7-5:5 today. It boils down to "be kind" and "don't be a jerk". Love for others can be difficult at times, but God loved us first so that we can love others.

It's so important to be present in the moment, to not keep looking to the past which can bring shame or the future which can bring anxiety, but rather live in the moment, learning and growing and listening to the Holy Spirit.
Becoming an emotionally mature adult takes humility and forgiveness. Fear can hinder our maturity, fear of losing control, fear of facing the truth within ourselves, fear of the unknown. As we grow in Christ, we can rest in the knowledge that He already knows and walks alongside us every step of the way.
Sometimes what is needed is a check in with a friend. In today's episode we check in on how the past couple of weeks have been going, navigating change, transition, and feeling all of the feelings. What does it look like to work through difficult and complex emotions? How do you cope with major upheaval in your life?
In today's we discuss the importance of daily pauses and weekly Sabbaths. Our lives can often be hectic, but God has given us the gift of stopping. It needs to become a daily and weekly rhythm in our lives. Even spending two minutes a couple of times each day in silence and stillness before the Lord will help to open up your heart and mind to listen for the Holy Spirit.
The Sabbath day (stopping for 24 hours from our toil and everyday labor) is a gift from God reminding us that our value is not in our doing, not in our laboring, not in chasing after more things. We do not gain more value or worth in God's eyes by doing. So pause, stop, be still and know that God is God. And let Him fill you up in the silence and stillness.
In today's episode we discuss grief and loss. We will all experience grief and loss and it's important that we allow ourselves to grieve. Pushing down emotions or putting our emotions on the back burner while we "deal" with life are only going to hurt us in the long run. Learning how to work through times of loss, disappointment, and grief help ensure you can become and emotionally healthy disciple of Jesus.
At some point in our walk of faith we will come to a wall. Walls can take many forms, but if we can lean into the Holy Spirit and learn to get through the wall (a.k.a. "dark night of the soul") often our faith is fuller, stronger, and more mature.
Have you ever felt like you've come against a wall in your faith? What did that look like? Do you feel like you're in a "dark night" now? Know that God does not leave you nor forsake you. There are many examples in Scripture of people getting through dark nights (which often last far longer than a night). May God give you strength if you find yourself in a difficult time.
Our pasts impact our present and we need to acknowledge that. In this episode we chat about how our family history can affect our ways of dealing with life. We look into the life of Joseph through Scripture and how he was able to break some of the cycles found within his family as he endeavored to follow GOD.

Happy Easter! Christ is Risen!! In today's episode we chat a bit about the mission Jesus gave to the disciples when as he ascended into heaven, but as per usual we meandered along some bunny trails too. Enjoy.
Today we chat about Good Friday. It's a tough conversation as we think through the events on that day. Let's not rush to Resurrection Sunday. Sit for time and meditate on these things. We all know Sunday is coming, but remember what it might have been like for those living in the moment.
We get to visit in person again chatting about Palm Sunday (among other things), looking in the Gospel of Luke (chapter 19:29-46). Jesus resolved to do what needed doing and wept over Jerusalem and its people. Later in Luke's Gospel Jesus encouraged His disciples saying, "But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves." (Luke 21:14)
What would our lives look like if we resolved ahead of time, before a situation ever happened, that we were going to let the Holy Spirit take the lead?

Another week talking about the little letter of Jude. This week we dive deep into verses 12-16, but especially verse 12. The Greek word spilas means a hidden rock or reef in the water that could potentially damage the boat or even shipwreck it. But it's also metaphorical about people who can shipwreck our faith. This is why it's so important to know the Word, be in prayer, be in fellowship with other believers, and ask for discernment. May God grant each of us the power of discernment so that we are not caught unawares by hidden "rocks" which could derail our walk with the Lord.
Week 2 on the Book of Jude. Here are a couple of helpful references. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah can be found in Genesis 18-19. The story of Cain in Genesis 4. Balaam is referenced in several places throughout Scripture but the initial story is in Numbers 22 and subsequent chapters and referenced again in Revelation 2:14. Korah's rebellion can be found in Numbers 16. Jenny made a comment about the story of Michael disputing over Moses' body is in an apocryphal book. That is incorrect. That story may have been in a now lost book called "The Assumption of Moses" which Origen (an early church theologian) mentions in his writing.
Sometimes reading Scripture requires a little (or a lot of) extra digging.
