I am so happy to have such phenomenal feedback and help with my personal statement from a paid professional and my medical school writing advisor. They helped me describe my journey to medicine, showcase my skills, and reminded me of what a residency program wants in a potential resident. Here, I shared my first draft, all of the helpful tips and feedback, and the final product. I felt like I did not have a clue on how to write a proper personal statement for my residency application. Summing up my journey to medicine, struggles in life, and the skills I have acquired throughout medical school in less than 850 words seemed impossible.

I kept questioning everything. Is this too dark? Not dark enough? Too descriptive? How does the reader feel at the end?

I decided that any expense that spares me the headache of dealing with grammar and my anxieties while helping me improve my application would be so worth it.

So I coughed up the $645.65. Ouch... but hopefully worth it.

School writing advisor

During a "match document meeting" phone call, my school writing advisor gave me tips on further improving my personal statement, supplemental application, myERAS application, and CV.

She said that because I am applying for surgery, I should squeeze in some kind of surgical skill. I did not know how to include that without just saying "yeah, I can suture pretty well", so I added a small paragraph about how I improved over time, and I think it helped bring everything together.

The Final Product

Stay tuned for everything you need to know about the ERAS supplemental application and how to make it complement your residency application.
