When I was alone, searchin for a melody, he sang a sweeter song, and gave it as a gift to me
and that which I feared most is that which is most precious to me now”

It’s relationships here on earth that keeps me coming back to check the condition of my faith in Jesus. Hear the story where I talk about this song: in Jesus n Music episode “Careening Off The Guardrails” episode 69
Member when the older kids didn’t want the younger kids around? ..Now it’s the young people that don’t want the old people around.
In this song, even singing to my wife, I can see too my relationship with God who saw that it was good to have a relationship. That it was not good for us to be alone.
I would write songs for Still Dancin over the next 3 years.. tryin to balance my life out again, somewhere between God and the “church secretary”
I talk about this song from the Still Dancin’ project in The next Jesus N Music episode: “Careening Off The Guardrails”. Enjoy the sarcasm
Freedom Won’t Deliver Me
Writers: Bryan Duncan / Sam Mathews / @Slam Duncan Music
Freedom won’t deliver me
Cause it ain’t really gettin’ me home
I can be a free man
Do the best that I can
But it won’t deliver me, deliver me, or liberate my soul
Serenity’s a sad place
For things I’ll never change
When your love and my will
Are on a different page
In front of me ..Eternity
Is just more of the same
Cause I choose my slavery
All freely on my own
Freedom without your lovin’ arms
Well it don’t feel like freedom at all
I can live how I choose
I’ll be free when I lose
But there’s a hangin tree
Awaitin’ me
When I freely do what I do
Freedom ..don’t tell me bout freedom
If I’m still just someone you don’t know
I can love how I live
With no freedom to give
It’s a tragedy that captures me
And will not let me go..
Freedom won’t deliver me
Cause I’m still just someone you don’t know
I can be a free man
Do the best that I can
But it won’t deliver me, deliver me, or liberate my soul
Freedom without your lovin’ arms
Well it don’t feel like freedom at all

Some thoughts aren’t funny. Honesty about where I am is essential. You can’t heal what you can’t feel.
Bad stuff and Good stuff happen at the same time. Gratitude is a choice.. How bout payin that forward.
In keeping with the story in “Jesus & Music” about “Finding A New Soul”, this song written long before this, wasn’t euphoric enough to make Christian radio airplay. But the song is a prayer of honesty about the way things sometimes feel regardless of the Faith you pursue.
End of the day.. the world does revolve around YOU! and what you do.. the decisions you make
This song was written for another group, Ended up one I would record on my project “Conversations” in a duet with my youngest son. *Song is yours by request in the comments.

If yer asked the same question 3 times, there’s a good chance its comin from someone who already knows the answer.

When somebody says something so dumbfounding yer not even sure where to start with a comeback.
I know God won’t do this for me.. but its sure nice to get that out of my heart by confessing
Maybe the Bible says to pray without ceasing cause maybe it takes that long to get to the point.
That point in life when you can’t fix anything. Nothing to do but walk thru the valley of the shadow of death.

First 7 songs on MERCY. This is my biggest selling record. What was going on when I wrote the songs.
Somewhere between Anonymous Confessions and Mercy, I was dealing with depression .. and right when things were going well on the outside.
Should I be asking for ‘happines’? Doesn’t seem to be at the top of God’s list of things to get done.
So Let me get this straight.. I should love you the way you would love you if you were me?
“I don’t like to think of me as bein’ self righteous but it’s better than bein’ responsible for my OWN actions”
Probably the most over used words that most of us use when we don’t like the way things are!!
A Cuttin Edge needs to be Sharpened, it get’s pretty dull continually striking at the armor of resistance.
“We ran into a snag” bass player Kevin Thomson announced to the crowd as we were two hours late. A catastrophic understatement of what it took to get to our next gig in Houston Tx
We’re always lookin for significance. Apparently God, sacrificing his first born, isn’t enough.

The significance of the music about Jesus is the numbers of people who made a decision then and still follow him now.

Embarrassing moments on Tour with Sweet Comfort Band and Our first big song by the same name.
This is a rough demo made from a live performance of a Worship song written to sound like Motown (on purpose)
Sweet Comfort Band started in 1973 but it would take four years to do our first full record project. Here’s how we got there
Sweet Comfort Band’s first chance to record a song. BTW the picture above is the album cover of Maranatha 5 the first project SCB would be a part of
most optomistic lyric I ever wrote was “the darkest night just makes the moon shine bright”
No one in Jesus Music in the 1970’s would influence the style of my Sweet Comfort Band more than Bill Sprouse and The Road Home. See if you can hear my taste in music here
Everybody wants to rule the world.. but why does God choose evil people most of the time?
First Time I heard Singer songwriter Bill Sprouse and his band Road Home. First time in Calvary Chapel’s tent there was ever a Hammond B 3 on stage.
In 1973 I would audition to play solo at the Calvary Chapel “Tent”. And later that year, meet my future band mates who would audition for me.
Would we still be readin the Bible if the Dead Sea Scrolls were found on a floppy disc?
“Bible studies would grow because people were drawn to the sweetness of the music and wanted to know where that music came from”
“confess your sins that you might be healed” it says.. but I would prefer to confess your sins that I might feel better.
interesting how we turn our prayers away from ourselves.. it’s less convicting than saying “I keep Sinning”
“Stop Believers” ..Maybe God doesn’t exist because He didn’t respond the way I would’ve responded if I were HIM”
Recalling my life in the 1970’s and the coming of what they would call the Jesus Movement
You’d Think, with GPS now, no need to ask for Direction, but Church is still short on Men who can’t admit what they don’t know.
Have patience its hard to tell the story of a decade 5 minutes at a time. it’s 1968 in this episode, and the beginning of my musical influences in High School

“Greater is he that is in the little guy.. than he that is on the wrong team” story of David & Goliath in a fractured bible scripture
What can we cling to thru grief? The promises in the Bible
This song was recorded with my original Sweet Comfort Band after our Bass player died. It was never released. From “The Waiting Is Over”.
I offer this song to everyone who loses someone. My way of simply giving back to you in a difficult time.
I will send you an Mp3 of this song to your email upon request in the comments under this title!
Ever wonder why others don’t Listen to your testimony of the more difficult truths you’ve come to understand ? Don’t take it personal.
most of us don’t make the breaking news when we pass away.. so whats important to know about you?
If you’ve ever looked at house plans, most pages don’t make sense to most of us non-contractors. Maybe that’s why Gods Plans don’t seem to make sense to us most of the time.
This is not a “Christmas themed” sermon. But on Christmas Eve, I can only imagine what I would be like ON TOUR with the ‘Wisemen’.
In all the good things about Christmas we might find ourselves missing what has the most value~
Maybe now, we need the Multitude of the Heavenly Host to show up at our third shift job and scare the crap out of us.
Sometimes your words are better than a gift~ ‘nothing speaks to all you are to me.. couldn’t wrap that in a Bow’
Lets be honest, we don’t always find the Spirit of Christmas or any other sweet spirit the rest of the time either.
Most of us stay busy because we can’t find the peace that Jesus came to give us. That takes trust.. in who he is and what he said.
Every Christmas I get a little more sentimental. This is a “demo’ of a song I wrote this inspired by my memory of a “Baby’s First Christmas’ Ornament. That child is 40 years old now and has my very first Grandson. Let’s not forget that Baby Jesus grew up too.
I love the honesty in this Christmas song, “There is no peace on earth I said”, “for hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth good will to men”. But in the end is a reminder: “God Is Not Dead Nor Does He Sleep”.
Lets face it the world is a zoo! Lot of monkeys tryin to be lion! Funny the bible never mentions monkeys. But Jesus does however use a camel for an illustration.
Friends are people who know the trivial stuff about your life. I have also left a few trivial “droppings” about me that you probably didn’t know. If you’re a subscriber you might hear your name in my list of friends this week.

Here’s a song that was recorded but not officially released from the Sweet Comfort Band, my old group. Recorded 30 years after we broke up. Its Good to look back on your life and say “I never gave up.. laid it all on the line”
Bible Never uses the word “Feelings” that I have found. But boy do my I have a lot of ‘vexations’!
I call it my ‘humble pie’ prayer! thats the one you pray when your own plans didn’t work out. I’m pretty sure my plan B was God’s plan A all along.

Brace Yourself, this prayer has a twist, kind of like a day yer havin.. that never went where you thought it would.

where’s the balance in the good news? am I valuable or am I worthless? I’ve heard both extremes in church

“I always got the impression that if you were in a bad mood, there was an announcement in Heaven ‘ladies and gentlemen.. Jesus has left the building’ “

I don’t normally say this to God directly. But God also hears what I’m not sayin out loud.

you know everyone Jesus healed eventually died? just because yer not healed doesn’t mean God loves you any less than those with miracle transformations.

This song did make a record… just not mine. It’s a duet I did with Norwegian Artist Arvid Pettersen. my favorite part of the song is the “Prince-like” vocal stacks on the break down. I usually rewind the song to that section.
I have had low expectations when I pray for someones pain to be relieved. I got a remarkably quick answer recently and I was dumbfounded. maybe that shouldn’t be my reaction. Keep asking, Keep Seeking…
I read in the Bible about 5 crowns that are awarded in Heaven. Man I didn’t know we were workin for merit badges. I’m not ready!
unfinished version here.. Lyrics “I tell my story of how I met you,…. and I go from miserable to wonderful” lets remind ourselves of the Grace of God we’ve been given!
Even the wrong prayers a good if they encourage you to be honest. God already knows what yer thinking! Why Lie?
This is just for my Preachers Kid friends and those of you who grew up in church. It’s about an ironic twist.
My friends have often asked me about doing a Hymns project. So I saved this simple demo of an arrangement I did for a funeral. I have others as well. But for now they are simply basement tapes that I can share with you without embarrassment

Men have a new challenge when we get married. God is no longer just your Heavenly father. Imagine how he reacts if you don’t treat his daughter right.
Ever found that people know stuff about you that you didn’t tell em? Well now that doesn’t feel good.
Being patient with other people is a hard thing! I call it my benevolent service obligations. I Follow Jesus because.. I can’t fix you and I wish somebody would! LOL
Sharing your faith is not a homework assignment. If you’re continuing to grow in your knowledge of a personal savior sharing it will be absolutely natural. By the way I grow in faith by being honest with him in my current points of view. He’s happy to show me where I’m wrong!
I am often impatient with the progress God is making with other people. It hasn’t worked out well when I try to be an amateur providence in someone else’s life.
I'm not sayin you should 'lower the bar' just to show off how 'authentic' you are. We're saved by grace for sure. But lets not act like we're someone we're not. Most people can smell a fake from some distance.
Starting over is never easy so this is perfect for my new Podcast here... took three years to realize I was holding on to the past a little too tightly ..
this song May have some of the best lines I've written "What Do I Do when I can't pretend to know? What do I do when I don't believe in me? "
Lets face it .. the fourth quarter of your life is the most challenging. Staying purpose driven when they don't let you drive anymore! LOL
if it weren't hard enough for me to trust God for myself... now.. as a father of 4 and Grandpa to 5 currently the really hard part is Trusting God for THEM!
yes, I have played a few bars in a few bars. Wrote this one for a more subtle approach to why I talk to Jesus! LOL I seldom understand the workings of half the worlds inhabitants .. Females , no offense ladies I'm just sayin... or singin in this case
I've met some angelic people in a good way but I've often wondered if irritating people are sent by God to test my patience and long suffering! Enjoy my random thoughts here.
No this is not me indicting you for not doin more... and if you think that!... you've probably been spiritually 'manipulated' one too many times.
This song has had quite an impact when I've done it 'live'. I wrote it at least five years ago. But its clear it won't fit on a project. One complaint was that I 'rap' in the middle of it. I LIKE IT! But again it wouldn't make a genre format on radio. I played it at my home church.. it got a standing ovation .. and some of it was because it didn't sound like everything else. Of course we're all lookin for a way through our circumstances. "There is no faith in defining yourself by what you are going through" Our purpose is to Know God ..through everything.
I'm pretty pumped that I can finally deliver audio clips from a book I wrote, now out of print. It was going to be a daily 'devotional'. But the more I prayed about it the more I realized my prayers don't sound like anybody elses. And lets face it I'm not going to stand up well against Oswald Chambers or Charles Swindoll or Sarah Young's "Jesus Calling" or a dozen other classic devotionals. I read one or all of those I mention. I am passionate about following Jesus but it would be an insult to my creator to try to be somebody else. Just sayin'
like I sing in Everything In The Garden .. men couldn't get it right with only one rule to follow.. LOL
Hey you wanna hear songs I wrote that didn't make the last project? I've written in so many directions it has been hard to do a project with a continuity of theme. My songs rarely fit the current genre's in music in the new age.
Conversations with God are sometimes just a matter of curiosity. Voicing your thoughts to God regardless of the answers you get or not, is part of a genuine relationship with him. I've found myself less afraid of spending time with God for that very reason. He is not surprised by the things you do or say!
I hope you don't mind if I skip ahead in my own random thought process, my new thoughts are better than what I started with.
this prayer is simply putting yourself in the shoes of an 'outsiders' point of view. Be aware
My prayers are not meant to be simply cynical but rather to show the honesty we're afraid to admit.. I will post these audio reads from my book "Prayers You Won't Hear In Church" .. the book is out of print now, maybe due to a disinterest in sarcasm in Christian circles. In my opinion sarcasm is simply an acknowledgement that there is always more than one side to a story.
Christianity 101 my favorite bumper sticker of all time says "There is a God... You're Not Him"
doing this new podcast for me is a step out on the water so why not find some thoughts on walking there. I refer to Ozzie in this one it is my personal nick name for Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost For His Highest
This early nutshell is pretty short. this is the first of its kind.. something simple that I read that encouraged me in the way of staying on track. Constant reminders daily.
