  1. Sustainability Through Innovation: Sherri's efforts to create Aussie wool pellets not only provide a sustainable solution for wool byproduct from the shearing season but also offer numerous benefits for soil health and agriculture. The product acts as a slow-release nitrogen source, enhances water retention, aerates the soil, and serves as a natural deterrent for snails and slugs, making it a game-changer in the horticultural industry.

  2. Entrepreneurial Inspiration: Sherri's journey from creating Aussie wool pellets to winning awards and participating in business programs showcases the power of entrepreneurship and the impact of networking. Her commitment to sustainable farming and leaving a legacy of regenerative agriculture for future generations is truly inspiring for aspiring entrepreneurs and environmental advocates.

  3. Soil Reciprocity and Education: Sherri's passion for soil health and her dedication to educating and engaging with communities about the benefits of using wool pellets for gardening and farming is a testament to the importance of nurturing a reciprocal relationship with the soil. Her advocacy for sustainable practices and her commitment to the soil's well-being invite us to rethink our approach to agriculture and gardening.

If you're interested in learning more about Sherri Symons' remarkable journey in the soil-related industry and her collaboration with us, don't hesitate to reach out or visit her website. Let's continue to sow the seeds of sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship together!

Who is Sherri Symons

5th generation farmer from Southwest Victoria. Wool classer of 18 years. Trainer of Agriculture and wool classing at the local cafe. Owner of Aussie Wool Pellets. An innovation to utilize otherwise waste wool to create a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, that has multiple benefits to the soil.

One of my recent posts has one that's classic SherriHow amazing wool is. The wool I'm using is not wool that we wear but rather wool that used to be used as insulation and carpet but society and business sent it overseas and now as a farmer, we can not cover the costs associated with shearing with the sale of our wool so something needed to be done incorporating wool pellets into the soil no matter what type of soil you have can be beneficial.

This week I am sharing a podcast I was interviewed on so I am in the guest seat!

Remember, we all have the power to shape the future of our food system. Let's make choices that nourish the soil, our bodies, and our planet.

Here are 3 key takeaways from our conversation on how to improve soil health and create a sustainable food system:

1️⃣ Biodiversity is crucial: I emphasized that promoting biodiversity is a key principle of regenerative farming. Monoculture soy farms harm wildlife, while regenerative farms with diverse crops and animals actually support wildlife conservation. Let's prioritize biodiversity in our agricultural practices for the benefit of both nature and ourselves.

2️⃣ Choose better food, for yourself and the environment: I pointed out that the current price system for organic food is an illusion. Paying more for higher nutritional value and quality is actually cheaper in the long run. By supporting farmers who practice regenerative farming and avoiding mass-produced, chemically-treated food, we can contribute to a healthier food system.

3️⃣ Take control of your choices: Consumers have the power to drive change in the food system. By buying directly from farmers, asking questions about the origin and production methods of your food, and supporting innovative post-COVID food access solutions, we can create a demand for healthier, sustainably-grown food. Let's make conscious buying decisions and be part of the positive change we want to see in the world.

🎙️ In this episode, we dive deep into the importance of understanding soil context, reducing soil disturbance, and protecting the soil. Here are the three key takeaways from our discussion:

1️⃣ Context is Key: Soil health is intricately connected to climate, water management, energy, and finance. By understanding these factors in relation to soil health, we can make informed decisions and set realistic goals for regenerative practices.

2️⃣ Reduce Soil Disturbance: Tillage and uncontrolled traffic can destroy soil structure and function. Instead, we explore the benefits of no-till practices, controlled traffic, and precision GPS technology to minimize soil compaction and preserve soil health.

3️⃣ Protect the Soil: A vital principle of regenerative agriculture is to protect the soil surface from oxidation and erosion. By creating a cover or litter on the soil surface, we can improve water infiltration, reduce evaporation, and provide a habitat for beneficial soil microbes. Soil health is crucial for sustainable agriculture and food production.

By implementing these principles, we can not only improve soil fertility but also increase water-holding capacity, infiltration rates, and overall productivity.

Thank you to Annie Huang for a great interview and permission to stream the interview onto my podcast. My article will be in the next magazine issue in 2024!

🌱 Excited to share that I had the honour of being interviewed by Annie Huang from BudLife Magazine for their next issue.

It was an amazing conversation about the wonders of soil and its secrets. 🌱

Here are 3 key takeaways from the episode:

1️⃣ Soil is a living organism: Unlike dirt, soil is teeming with life and plays a crucial role in our ecosystem. It's essential to treat soil with love and care, just like we do with animals or children. The health of soil directly impacts the health of plants, animals, and even our gut biome.

2️⃣ Rethinking traditional approaches: I believe in questioning traditional research methods when it comes to understanding soil. Recent scientific findings have shown that trees communicate and are interconnected through the mycelium network in soil. By embracing this shift in thinking, we can uncover surprising information and unlock the true potential of our soil.

3️⃣ Connecting with soil through art: Our disconnection from soil can be attributed to societal influences and a fear of germs. But just like our innate creativity, our connection to soil is a part of our nature. I encourage everyone to explore art as a way to reconnect with our environment and regain that sense of creativity and connection. I

On this episode of Secrets of the Soil, our guest Jono Forrest shares his insights on regenerative agriculture and working with landholders to understand their values and goals. He discusses the various motivations behind landscape rehydration, such as erosion or water logging, and how some landholders are looking to improve their farms and build natural capital. Jono highlights how visual aspects of waterways often overshadow other factors like grazing management that impact landscape function. Unlike prescriptive industrial farming, the approach discussed in this episode considers the unique aspects of each place. The conversation also delves into the historical perspective and mindset of farmers who prioritize clearing land and draining water for farming purposes, acknowledging the criticism while recognizing the need for feeding the world and utilizing land. The younger mindset and innovative approaches of individuals, including children showcasing business ideas on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, are shaping problem-solving in agriculture. The episode addresses misconceptions about farmers and emphasizes that they are doing their best with the knowledge they had, evolving and learning about soil health and innovation. The use of farm automation, such as drones, is explored as a way to save time and redirect efforts into marketing and business growth. The discussion also introduces a new project called Soil Connect, a digital marketing agency dedicated to serving soil caring businesses, inviting collaboration and sharing information on their website. The importance of understanding soil biology and moving away from industrial agriculture practices is emphasized throughout the episode. Jono discusses the concept of "living labs" where research is derived from farms, bridging the gap between theory and practice. The empowerment of farmers to treat their farms as research labs and experiment with different methods is highlighted, along with the sense of community and shared values that come with engaging in this process. The episode also stresses the importance of considering the broader community when making changes or taking actions, using the example of a farmer's impact on others in terms of water usage and environmental factors within a catchment. Involving the community is seen as challenging but necessary for achieving the best outcomes. The Malone Rehydration initiative, which has been ongoing for over 20 years, is mentioned as an example of slow progress in restoration efforts, emphasizing the need to scale up and increase awareness through community involvement, including school kids and citizen science initiatives. Jono's personal journey and passion for agriculture are shared, from growing up on a farm to pursuing an agricultural commerce degree and eventually becoming an accountant. The shift towards regenerative agriculture was sparked by a holistic management course, leading to a career change after 27 years in accounting. Jono's work with the Malone organization and collaboration with farmers driving for change in agriculture is discussed. The importance of adopting a generalist mindset in today's world is emphasized, noting the problems associated with specialization in various fields. The speaker encourages listeners to zoom out and consider all the factors at play in their lives, reflecting on what they can do to make a positive impact. Jono is asked if he is ready to become the voice of the soil, and the conversation touches on the value of business acumen and open mindsets, especially in traditional industries like farming. The advice to farmers on understanding the importance of business decision making and profitability is highlighted, as well as the value of holistic management training in changing perspectives. The episode concludes with a thought-provoking question about the knowledge or skill Jono would like to transfer to everyone.

Who is Jono Forrest

The capture of carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to make glucose, the essential molecule of life. The other chapters discuss how all other molecules of life, including carbohydrates, proteins, and hormones, are built from glucose, and how maximizing photosynthesis is the key to building healthy cells and regenerating soils. The book also covers the importance of managing cover crops and weeds, as well as balancing minerals to ensure optimal plant growth. The author stresses that dead plants and bare soil do not photosynthesize, and that the more plants put in an area, the better, even if they are regarded as obnoxious weeds, as they provide the most organic matter and molecules of life. The author also discusses how managing water and nutrients is essential in growing healthy plants, and how nutrient deficiencies and excesses can be corrected to ensure optimal plant growth.

The importance of frequent and non-destructive soil analysis using microBIOMETER, as soil microbes have short, exciting lives and the microbial population changes rapidly. Testing soil at the point of extraction provides a bigger picture of what's present, as opposed to testing dried and reconstituted soil which yields a different mix. The lack of knowledge on the cycle of microbes beneath the Earth further highlights the need for frequent soil testing. MicroBIOMETER's rapid, easy, and cheap testing allows for more frequent analysis of soil biology, enabling experimentation and a better understanding of crop life cycles and practices.

In this podcast episode, host Regen Ray Milidoni speaks with Dr. Eric Berg about the importance of microbes in soil, plants, and our bodies. The conversation begins with the difficulty of finding truly nutrient-dense food in today's world, as much of what is available is heavily processed and lacking in beneficial microbes. Dr. Berg emphasizes that the microbes in the soil and in our food are essential to our health and well-being, and that it is important to consider this aspect when making food choices.

The discussion then turns to the medical profession and its approach to nutrition. Dr. Berg laments that nutrition is often given little emphasis in medical training and that the healthcare field as a whole is not focused on promoting true health and healing. He explains that this is why he covers a wide range of opposing viewpoints in his content creation, and why he has also turned his attention to farming and agriculture.

The conversation then focuses on the importance of the microbiome in food, with Dr. Berg noting that pasteurization and other forms of sterilization can remove beneficial microbes from food. He suggests that incorporating more raw foods into one's diet can be helpful, as can consuming foods grown on healthy soils that are rich in microbes. This is particularly important for vegetables, which can be a significant source of beneficial microbes.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Berg stresses the importance of the microbiome in all aspects of health and wellness, from the soil to the food we eat to our own bodies. He encourages listeners to pay more attention to this aspect of their health and to make choices that promote a healthy microbiome.

Values are important to the farm business. The farm has organically developed five pillars of production that serve as values: animal welfare, environmental stewardship, creating healing food, building community, and profitability. These values are viewed as a flywheel that continually feeds into one another, helping to drive the farm's progress. A priority is placed on animal welfare, ensuring a good environment for the animals' natural expression and using environmentally friendly management practices. The farm also aims to create healing food, build community, and achieve profitability. Who is Jacob Wolki?

Jacob Wolki is a businessman from Albury Wodonga, Australia who comes from a family with a long history of running small businesses in the region. He started his journey in the family business 10 years ago when he was 20 years old, purchasing a local bike shop named Cycle Station with his parents. Three years later, he built a café named Café Musette, which has grown and flourished over the years. Jacob then diversified into the farming business and started Wolki Farm, a regenerative farm that produces grass-fed beef, pastured eggs, pork, chicken, raw honey, and more. He has established a butchery to process meat from his farm and others, and runs a unique QR code based butcher's shop. To support other small-scale farmers in the region, Jacob runs a monthly farmers market named Regener EAT Farmers Market at Café Musette. He is known for his quick decision-making and empowering staff, as well as promoting a healthy and community-conscious lifestyle through his businesses.

Regeneratively grown food has many benefits for consumers, including higher nutrient density and improved taste. Additionally, purchasing food grown using regenerative farming practices can support local farmers and promote sustainable agriculture. The mindset around purchasing healthy food has also been shifting in recent years, with more people becoming aware of the importance of supporting sustainable and regenerative food systems.

Matty Lansdown is a former cancer research scientist, who after years of working in hospitals and seeing the limitations of modern medicine, has become passionate about helping people achieve optimal health and wellness. Growing up in a country town and being exposed to holistic health practices, Matty has always had a blend of traditional and modern understanding of health. He has come to realize that while most people know what they should eat, the real challenge is in behaviour change and mindset around health. Matty now spends his time helping people overcome this challenge and create healthy habits that last. He also encourages people to become more literate in food, by visiting farmer's markets and treating meal prep and shopping as a sacred practice.

Who is Matty?

Matty Lansdown is a scientist, nutritionist and an Emotional Eating and Self Sabotage coach that specialises in weight loss and self confidence for women and busy mother’s.

Starting out in the field of nutritional epigenetics and spending several years working in hospitals as part of a disease research team, Matty believes that most disease and illness is not due to bad luck but as a result of poor nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Matty’s extensive experience allowed him to uncover the deeper challenge people have with health which isn’t about calories or kale, but in fact mindset and behaviour change.

Having been on his own personal development journey, Matty is now super-passionate about showing people how to level up their health so that healthy habits and the best food choices are easy and natural.

Likewise, Matty’s weekly podcast “How to NOT Get Sick and Die”, provides his followers and clients with a deep dive into nutrition and how to develop healthy habits that last.

Soil is a crucial component of many ecosystems, and healthy soils are necessary for the growth of plants, the provision of food and clean water, and the regulation of climate. However, it seems that the bureaucrats and funders of the research and development work are frustrated with the lack of progress made by the research community in solving the problem despite decades of research on soil erosion, soil carbon, soil aggregation, soil fertility, and soil biology. There is likely a gap between the research and the implementation of solutions on the ground. To focus on the soil as a part of their mission is likely due to the interconnectedness of soil health with other environmental and societal issues.

The European Commission has invested significant funding into a "soil mission" as part of its five main missions for the next decade. These missions include adapting to climate change, finding a cure for cancer, creating sustainable cities, protecting oceans and waterways and clean water, and saving soils. The soil mission aims to address the problem of soil degradation and loss, which is a significant environmental and economic concern. The specific plans and actions of the soil mission are not specified, but it likely involves research and development, conservation and restoration efforts, and promoting sustainable land use practices.

Who is Adam O'Toole?

Adam O'Toole is a soil scientist and communicator working for the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy. He did his Ph.D. research on the Agronomic and Environmental Effects of Biochar under Norwegian conditions. He is currently involved in a European-wide project called Prepsoil which is educating Europeans about the importance of taking care of soils. This is part of a wider initiative called the European Soil Mission which has the ambition to establish 100 living labs where farmers, researchers, and innovators devise, test, and demonstrate methods that can lead to healthier soils in Europe.

Regeneration is fundamentally about regenerating relationships, whether that's regenerating relationships between plants and their soil microbiome, whether it's regenerating relationships between livestock and the landscape, regenerating relationships between people who manage the farm and the community, whatever it might be. It's fundamentally about regenerating relationships.

To understand how we can eat and grow food that doesn't need to take so much from the soil and is going to give back to and with a food forest. And helping us understand how to improve our processes and methods and keep track of everything because of all the different species and variations that come with the other fruits and seeds that we're working with. The soil organic matter encourages organic matter to thrive and flourish a considerable part of it.

Who is Liana Toth?

Studied permaculture amongst other courses and have been practicing restoring soil, creating and designing gardens for 7+ years. Currently Nursery Manager for Climate Force and manage food forest gardens, community gardens and a regeneration site all organically certified.

Liana from Climate Force talks about their work on a 350-acre piece of land in the Daintree region of Australia, which is sandwiched between two World Heritage sites: the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The organization is focused on planting native trees in order to regenerate the land, which was previously used for agriculture and is now covered in weeds. They are also growing community gardens and food forests in order to encourage community involvement and diversity. Climate Force's goal is to plant 360,000 or more native trees in the area in order to regenerate the land, which will also increase biodiversity by creating habitat for various insects, animals, birds, and shrubs. Liana mentions that the Daintree region is home to many ancient and primitive species of trees, and that some seeds in the rainforest only fruit every five, ten, or 15 years.

The power of Regenerative Agriculture is not in just one thing. It's a combination that includes the head, heart, and research to create solutions for the future.

Who is Terry McCosker

Terry is an internationally acclaimed teacher and has worked in research, extension, and property management in both government and private sectors for almost 55 years.

In his research era, Terry published over 40 papers and made several world-first discoveries in the 1980s in the fields of bull fertility, ruminant nutrition, and pasture ecology. Terry co-founded RCS over 35 years ago which has set the benchmark for capacity building in rural and regional Australia. He is responsible for the introduction of the GrazingforProfit™ School into Australia which now has over 8,000 graduates and has changed grazing, livestock, and business management nationally. Terry has chaired the Australian Beef Expo, has sat on numerous advisory committees, and has been nominated for many awards.

Terry was described in the Australian Farm Journal editorial in July 2010 as follows: “It is hard to imagine the mental toughness and commitment McCosker and his early farmer adopters had to muster to withstand the flood of criticism from within conventional agricultural science circles. … McCosker’s ideas took farming out of a war with nature to an association with it. He introduced Australian farmers to the concept of ecosystem health and developed methods of measuring it alongside financial health. Critically he introduced the concept of farm family well-being and welcomed female partners, siblings and parents into courses about decision making.”

The earth is a beautiful place, but it's also delicate. With so many people and animals depending on the land for their daily needs from food sources to places of safety from disasters or violence-the ecosystem cannot survive if we don't take care of it!

What is a Solution? Listen to this episode as Ethan discusses Regenerative Agriculture, Diversity, Holistic Management, and More...

__________

Who is Ethan Gordon?

Ethan Gordon is a Ph.D. Candidate with the Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney. He uses discourse analysis to explore regenerative agriculture and other ecological alternatives to extractive agricultural models.

Through action research alongside the Institute of Ecological Agriculture (IEA), Ethan aims to understand how transformation can be facilitated in agriculture to prevent further ecosystem degradation and social unrest. IEA is a co-operative of farmers, consultants, and educators dedicated to, and advocating for, healthy agricultural landscapes and communities. Together, they are developing an accreditation designed to support the ethical and professional standards of consultants, educators, and trainers in ecological (regenerative) agriculture.

This is important work to Ethan because it speaks directly to his family’s custodianship of Moffat Falls, a pastoral property located in the lands of the Dunghutti, Gumbaynggirr, and Anaiwan Nations. Moffat Falls is a steer trade operation. Through holistic landscape management, they utilise their grazing animals for carbon sequestration and are early adopters of carbon farming.

There is growing evidence that by using farming methods that replenish the soil, we can decrease the negative consequences and possibly even reverse some of our soil problems.

Bio-dynamic agriculture is an environmentally friendly method of farming that includes gradually increasing soil fertility by applying compost made from organic materials. As a result, the plants are healthier and have more vitamins than conventional crops.

Love to eat but not keen on the chemicals? Let's hear from Mark Rathbone about how he founded Save Our Soils and how, as a child, he was exposed to a lot of information from his father during his transition from conventional to organic farming, which sparked his interest in regenerative agriculture and healthy eating.

Who Is Mark Rathbone?

Mark Rathbone runs his own business called Save Our Soil Australia. His mission is to inform people of the regenerative nature of bio-dynamic agriculture by growing tasty fruit and vegetables, selling them through farmers' markets, and providing information on the subject via our website, speaking engagements, and other media.

Mark and his family have been bio-dynamic farming since December 1965 (when he was just 2 years old) so he is probably in a really good position to explain it.

The catastrophic consequences of global climate change have gone on way too far. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon is on the rise, and it's a market that's predicted to grow There is no sign of slowing down, and if continues to be credited a number of new grant programs could benefit farmers all over the country.

Proper soil carbon management can not only retain more water, but can also restore the landscape, increase your yield, and give you access to necessary resources.

Let’s dig deeper into this as Louisa Kiely shares with us everything we need to know about carbon farming.

Who is Louisa Kiely?

Louisa, Director of Carbon Farmers of Australia, obtained her Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of New England. She worked in the market research industry as a field supervisor while bringing up her 3 children. Together with her husband Michael, in 1991-2003 Louisa established and grew a city-based marketing agency from zero to 55 employees. In this business, she was Director and General Manager of Boomerang! Integrated Marketing & Advertising.

Intent on following her first choice of career, she studied for the Advanced Diploma of Farm Management at Sydney University (Orange), trained in Holistic Management, and from 1998 to 2017 she was a woolgrower in the Wellington NSW district, growing fine Merino Wool.

She was selected by the Central Western Catchment Management Authority as one of 10 highly innovative landholders in the Catchment, to be trained in farm planning and soil restoration. Through this training, she and Michael became convinced that soil carbon could solve many agricultural, environmental, and climate change problems.

She co-founded the Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming in February 2006 to lobby for the right of Australian landholders to trade on the emissions offset market the credits they can earn by sequestering carbon in their soils. She has since traveled throughout Australia and internationally meeting scientists and farmers and spreading the word about Carbon Farming.

She was invited to be a delegate at a Climate Change and Conservation Farming Conference in LaFayette, Indiana, organised by the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation. She was also a delegate at the National Carbon Offset Coalition Conference in Bozeman, Montana. She is co-founder of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd (CFA). CFA also published the world’s first Carbon Farming Handbook.

Seeking to build bridges with the scientific community, she organised two Soil C Summits between Scientists and Farmers, in Dubbo and Orange NSW. And as co-founder of CFA, she organised and ran the world’s first Carbon Farming Conference & Expo in November 2007. In 2019 the 9th National Carbon Farming Conference & Expo, the biggest yet with delegates from every state in Australia and from all over the world, was held.

She developed the “CarbonCredited™” brand for wool and recruited woolgrowers into this emissions reduction program. Louisa has been recognized for her work and was chosen as runner up in the 2008 NSW Rural Woman of the Year. She has also sat on the board of the Regional Development Australia Committee – Orana Region. This intergovernmental committee was set up to ensure the future strength and development in rural and regional Australia.

As director of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd, she was a part of a consortium of 3 companies that developed the first Soil Carbon Methodology submitted to the Carbon Farming Initiative process. Carbon Farmers of Australia also offers farm-ready training in Carbon Farming and Trading.

Have you enjoyed the sweet taste of homegrown strawberries and asparagus? Or do you prefer the robustness of tomatoes and cucumbers? Well, it’s time to appreciate healthy soil that provides nutrients for all those tasty treats.

A handful of soil is filled with a complex system of microbes, insects, plant roots, worms, and microbes. Healthy soil is alive! To produce a great crop, we need to create conditions where our plants can grow their best. An ecosystem that uses waste products from plants and animals as food for other creatures, an ecosystem-based on relationships that feed each other...soils should be alive with earthworms, microorganisms, bugs and with a considerable amount of organic matter—dead plant material.” all providing an interchangeable cycle of life beneath us.

Children mainly have little chance to discover that there is a life that exists under the surface of the soil because children are not being taught enough about soil life in schools.

They are only aware of the life above the ground than underneath it. This leads to a serious lack of interest of our younger generation towards their surrounding environment.

Some kids (especially the younger generation) nowadays prefer visual information instead of written information. Their form of understanding life comes through observation more than through text.

But, not all hope is lost! There are ways to combat this serious issue.

By educating younger generations on the importance of healthy soils, we can ensure our soils continue to be a valuable resource for generations to come.

Who is Asher Cloran?

Asher Cloran is a health, nature, and education entrepreneur who leads the company Life Rocks - a science education company aimed at connecting children to the magic of nature through discovery, interactivity, science, and art.

Asher educates adults on working with Nature to create a better home, classroom, and family and creates resources with his teams like illustrated books, board games, and more to help ignite a passion for Nature in the younger generations.

As farmers or home gardeners, both have the desire to have their own compost pit but there are various worm culture methods using castings that may not be safe for consumption, and of course the time it takes for worm bins to start generating! Most importantly, we want our own vermicompost environment without needing to worry about safe practices or slow growth.

Regardless of whether you are interested in growing organic vegetables for your own backyard garden or simply want to help cut down on the amount of food sent to landfills, it is always good to know that there are communities or organizations that you can reach out to help you in your composting journey.

Who is Peter Critch?

Peter is the youngest co-founder of Subpod. His vision is to transform organic waste into nutrient-dense food through a circular economy.

He believes that the problem of organic waste is the solution to improving global well-being, and the missing link is intelligent composting.

By understanding the biological processes of nature, Peter believes systems can be created that regenerate our economies, environment, and wellbeing. The circular economy starts when we begin to see our global problems as global solutions.

Despite the growing popularity of organic foods and products, many consumers are still not aware of the benefits and downsides.

The word ‘organic’ is now being used as a buzzword to sell all sorts of products. The label cannot be taken at face value. Consumers should do their own research to ensure that the product actually is what it claims to be.

Data on the organic sector is not readily available and it is important to have as much information as possible in order to make better decisions.

The only way to find out whether something is good or bad for you is if we have access to enough data and statistics.

A shift in the way we farm is vital to ensure our survival. We must begin to foster a regenerative agricultural system that will produce more food while sequestering carbon and capturing water. In addition, we need to embrace practices that replenish soil fertility, retain nutrients, and protect our waterways. This will provide increased resilience of landscapes and communities

Regenerative agriculture offers a solution to different farming practices. Farmers are key to creating a sustainable future. With enough support and collaboration from other people they can change the system and create resilient farms that can stand the test of time.

Working together and empowering farmers aims to inspire them through knowledge sharing and skills development, so they can improve their business while improving the environment. Working together means they have more power to achieve what's important to each individual farm or in the community.

The principles and practices of biodynamic farming are approaches that can be applied anywhere food is grown. With thoughtful adaptation to scale, landscape, climate, and culture, farmers everywhere will benefit from these simple yet profound concepts.

Knowledge combined with experience, and curiosity can create a sense of understanding and discovery. The more we make ourselves knowledgeable, the more we shift our way of thinking to something more beneficial

Who is Charlie Arnott?

Charlie is an award-winning grazier from Boorowa, New South Wales, Australia, an educator and passionate advocate for Regenerative Farming practices. His family business has developed under Charlie’s guidance from a ‘conventional’, industrial high input mixed enterprise farm working against Nature to a Biodynamically principled holistically managed farm partnering with Nature.

Charlie started his Regenerative Farming journey 15 years ago. Previously he and his family had been farming conventionally on their 5,000-hectare property “Hanaminno” for over 35 years, in an industrial high input/ high output farming business model, heavily reliant on pesticides, herbicides, and man-made fertilisers.

After a series of epiphanies and through education Charlie found the Regenerative Agriculture movement, a movement that reflected his instinctive connection to the land and his ethos of producing quality food for his family and the world.

Today, Hanaminno is managed using organic, biodynamic and holistic grazing principles, and produces beef, lamb, and pigs, pasture-raised on 100% native and exotic species, raised sympathetically within the landscape and the resources it provides, proactively marketing products direct to their clients, focusing on providing clean healthy nutritiously dense food direct to butcher and families.

The animals are handled in a ‘low-stress stock’ fashion, considerate of their individual and mob behaviour; they are 100% chemical-free and are not treated with any hormones, vaccines, or drenches.

Charlie believes the decision to move away from trying to get nature to do what man wants, and instead of learning how best to collaborate with nature, is key to not only a prosperous farming business but also to a farmer’s health, consumer health, and the land’s health. The business is not certified organic, nor Biodynamic, however, prefers being known as ‘Certified by Community’, given the transparency and openness to the public and clients under which the farm operates. Clients are considered ‘co-producers as they play a vital role in guiding the production of food through their feedback and connection with the farm.

Charlie and his team host and facilitate 2-day workshops at Hanaminno and across Eastern Australia, teaching farmers, gardeners, and families the principle and practices of Biodynamics, and hold open community preparation making events on farm to foster the skills and experience for farmers to create a relationship with their landscape, and be self-reliant.

Charlie considers himself and his team sunshine and water harvesters, soil builders, pasture and animal nurturers, change facilitators, educators, community supporters, and Nature partners. With a focus on putting the ‘culture’ back into Agri-culture. Charlie has received several agricultural industry awards for leadership, resource management, and conservation, more recently the prestigious Bob Hawke National Landcare Award 2018. The award acknowledges a person who has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to caring for the land, champions better practices, and gives their time to share knowledge with others.

The world is changing. More and more people are having instantaneous connections with each other and this has a great force that shifts our sense of being by opening and sharing opportunities with others on how our small little actions will be a great one that can impact the community.

Communities are created differently but their goals are to help keep everyone with what their passionate about and make them grow in it. This is where you have a place to share and feel valued and will be able to stand with someone and just keep it going.

We want people with great ideas to connect and reach out to others and turn that idea into reality.

Who is Sue Bradley?

She likes to think of herself as a conscious consumer, eater, and parent who is in constant curiosity and wonder about how we can be better humans walking this earth. How we can work with nature and within our local communities.

She sees supporting and working in local community initiatives as one of the most single most important attributes to help build a healthy and connected community. She is a co-founder of SWAMP Central Coast a sustainable local community garden, where they provide the space for the community to come together to learn about soil health, composting, garden design, growing food from seed, and nature play.

They particularly love the partnerships they have formed with local organisations to build bridges connecting communities together around growing food and sharing knowledge. She's grateful every day for the privilege of working in this space and seeing the impact of working on land has on human spirits.

A lot of people live in an urban environment which makes them somehow forget about nature. Everyone is focused on their career, family, or other things, and they don't have the time nor the energy to go outside and enjoy nature. This makes us feel disconnected from it.

But because of the Pandemic people are starting to reflect and have realizations on how taking a few moments every day to breathe in the fresh air and let your heartbeat to the rhythm of nature can have a profound positive effect not only on you as a human being but also on how we see and understand things especially how we treat and value our soils because everything from the soil the plant and animals and humans these are all interconnected.

The world is overpopulated and over-consuming, but we want to live in sustainable ways.

In a world where we are increasingly disconnected from nature, permaculture is a practice that helps us reconnect with the land. It’s about designing your lifestyle in a way that allows you to live in harmony with nature and is based on ethics of care for people and care for the environment.

The ultimate goal is to create permanent culture (and not just permanent agriculture) that fulfills human needs but at the same time partially fulfilling the needs of the natural environment.

Who is Nick Steiner?

Nick is passionate about solving the climate crisis using permaculture thinking and regenerative agriculture.

As Permanick he brings inspiration and practical solutions to individuals with the aim of living more regenerative lives. Together with a group of friends he is building up Climate Farmers to support regenerative agriculture all over Europe.

The soil is something that we are constantly touching, yet most of us know very little about it. We are taught the basics of what soil is at school but rarely do we ever go any further than that. It’s time to change this!

Imagine if you could learn about our own soil without being told by an expert with no personal connection to it. Imagine if you could have a personal connection with your soils and how they affect your daily life.

Who is Jono Frew?

Jono is a regeneration agriculture coach and educator. He and his team are here to enable farmers to think independently and to get back to the true JOY of growing food and taking full responsibility for choices made.

To help growers build organic matter in their soil, build diversity, utilize natural cycles, infiltrate, and hold onto more water, be more resilient to disease, drought, floods, predatory pests. disturbance events. We aim to do so by motivating, inspiring, facilitating, educating, and asking the BIG and IMPORTANT questions. Leaving you inspired and free from the current constraints to inquire into the areas of operation that CAN be improved by ways some people have never thought possible, Naturally.

The main problem that we have are some people think that they can't do something because of a lack of knowledge on the subject.

A lot of people think that it's hard to make a shift from being an enthusiast for one thing to being an enthusiast for another, but in truth all you need is passion.

Let’s all listen to the beat of the sound of our soils as Woodie McClean mixes his passion for music and how his love for our soils opens new ways for him to promote organic waste back into our soils.

Who is Woodie McClean?

Bringing an open mind and collaborative nature to represent the creative industries and the microbial macrocosm of life beneath our feet, Woodie McClean (aka MC Microbe) is a locally grown industrious musician and soil enthusiast.

Living and practising on Guringai/Darkinjung land on Australia’s East Coast, MC Microbe supports and re-connects artists in all fields through a developed network of practising professionals whilst following a passionate motivation for composting and healthy soil to regeneration this land coherently using biodynamic philosophies.

Listen to the song that Woodie McClean wrote and released with his Newcastle band Glovers Lane. "I Only Know Happiness" - is all about the power of thought and specifically how our minds are able to bring us together no matter the physical distance between us.

Soils can be a vital component of a variety of industries, from farming to construction. However, because the soil is so diverse and complicated, measuring its quality can be a challenge.

Whether you are an Agriculturalist with concerns over crop yield, or a Home Gardener wanting to grow food in your backyard, or even if you are just interested in what makes good soil “good” having a proper soil analysis will do the trick.

Who is Bryan McLeod?

Bryan McLeod was raised on a farm near Putaruru New Zealand, attending Massey University NZ in 1962 where he obtained a diploma in Agriculture, Dairy Farming Option.

He went through share-milking and farm ownership in the Waikato and started consulting in 1978 and moved to Australia in 1986.

Bryan established Pro Ag Consulting in 1987 which was represented in all states and territories within Australia. Bryan (ProAg Consulting) has now been consulting for 36 years, specialising in soil, plant and animal nutrition. He has studied the relationship between soil mineral balance and plant production, fruit quality and storage life, as well as likely effects on animal health and stock performance. During this time he has gained experience in most forms of agriculture, concentrating on soil nutrition, land preparation and remedial fertiliser programmes. Pro Ag Consulting now offers a complete soil and plant analysis with an independent fertility program and plans of action.

Pro Ag Consulting was reporting on approximately 2000 soil samples per year and then with partners established the Australian Perry Agricultural Laboratory (APAL) in Adelaide in 2000. In 2003, Bryan, and Partners, established a soil analysis laboratory in the Henan Province in China, with which to service local farmers. The objective of this service is not only the processing of soils but also education in agriculture. This includes the teaching of farmers to understand their soils and allowing them to make more educated evaluations on fertility programmes.

Bryan has been sort after as a guest speaker at agricultural seminars and as a presenter at educational workshops in many states of Australia. Bryan is presently working with dairy farmers in Japan.

Bryan has now returned to New Zealand but is still continuing to consult in Australia.

Who is Ewan Campbell?

Ewan is a Farmer researcher who discovered the ability to increase electricity in the soil and its effects on biology nutrient uptake and production.

Whilst growing up and farming on the peat land they were continually
challenging the boundaries of what was possible. There was no rule book
because very few had taken a peat swamp covered in scrub and turned it into a productive beef and sheep farm and then converted that to a dairy farm.

When he started farming on his own account his efforts to find people who could explain what, why and how things work on the farm and its soils usually left him with just a blank look. He was not deterred and his continued investigations were not in vain because they led him to be trained in soil agronomy, animal nutrition and environmental management with Brookside Laboratories. This unique opportunity gave him the ability to test, measure and give meaning to what they observed on the farm. When this knowledge was combined with the study of research papers and books from agricultural experts in biology, chemistry and physics a picture developed of how soils function in a productive manner. He want to pass his knowledge and experiences on.

Who Is Sam Duncan?

Sam Duncan founded FarmLab in 2016 after serving in the Royal Australian Air Force as a logistics officer. Following tours to Africa and the Middle East, Sam saw the need to support our adaptation to climate change. This led him to the hypothesis that if farmers had better soil data then they would be able to better manage soil carbon. In the quest to improve access to better soil data, he developed FarmLab, which at the time was a simple mobile app for agronomists and consultants to help collect and submit soil samples to a soil testing lab for analysis.

Since then, FarmLab have developed out their agronomy and project management software to help farmers and agronomists better manage and share agronomic insights and data. More recently the focus has been on helping farmers understand and enter soil carbon offset projects under the Australian Clean Energy Regulator. The first step in this was the development of a Soil Carbon Offset Report (SCOR), pulling together a range of technologies from partners at CSIRO and CIBO Labs to help farmers assess and understand soil carbon across the landscape – and make an informed decision about whether or not they would benefit from entering a soil carbon project.

FarmLab is continuing to help consultants and farmers maximise profitability by optimising nutrient application and supporting better soil management.
