What can we learn from mistakes made during projects implementation? On the 5th episode of The Digital Corner, Carlos is back again as the host, to ask Slim about how to learn from our mistakes.

The good news is that all mistakes that are made in a project can be in a way, or another extrapolated to other IT projects.

Mistake #1: Not explaining well enough to your clients the implications of the projects on different business-related decisions.

You need to make sure that your client is understanding 100% what she/he’s singing on (from the design phase).

Slim presented two specific examples from his own experience in retail forecasting and planning.

Mistake #2: Not giving bad news to the client. There is a certain fear from consultants from telling the truth to the client.

Being upfront will create success. Don’t hide problems under the rock.

Carlos mentioned that he’s seeing this a lot and you should fight it by mastering the art of risk management.

In this week’s episode, Carlos is talking about the revival of the Reengineering process. A topic that probably you’ll not find a lot of information on the internet yet it’s very relevant topic to companies tackling Digital Transformation projects.

A brief definition: It’s how you reengineer your processes within the constraints of IT.

And Carlos mentioned:

It’s not so much about the tools, but more about the people and the mindset:

  1. People: Business Process Analysts with IT Background + IT People with Business Preoccupations
  2. Assume that everything needs to be improved and anything that is implemented is already obsolete on day 1.
  3. Technology is changing every day – not investing in upgrading and adding new things is a sin that will render your process environment obsolete.

In this episode, Carlos as a host, interviewed Slim about a retail-specific topic: Promotion planning.

Slim, started by defining promo planning as is generally the process that is done up front in order to select which products will be offered in which stores (digital and physical) and when exactly. Having spent more than 15 years in the field, he shared his thoughts on how to approach this crucial phase for fast-fashion brands but also retailers such as Hope Depot where he was involved on a huge project.

Slim also insisted on how to tackle your planning and the very first thing you start with is

  • Reviewing the performance of your assortment planning: How did you do the previous years

Slim closed the episode by linking it to the topic of episode 1, buying versus co-developing. He highlighted the importance of starting small with one or two use-cases before kicking-off a complex project.

  • Process and Layout first (WMS)
  • Calculate the ROI before investing

And Slim closed the episode with a very good question: What about co-development. Could it be an option to seriously tackle a route optimization need for instance. What other use cases you see that would make sense for a co-development choice

Should you purchase a 3rd party software or Co-develop a supply chain planning solution?

3 main considerations that should not be ignored when making this decision:

  • #1. Which skills do you want to keep in-house?
  • #2. Operational risk of dependency on one specific cloud provider for instance versus the flexibility of being able to change from one to another or ability to switch.
  • #3. Access to specific AI and optimization expertise.
