Teaching our kids what is most important in life and how to achieve their dreams. We discuss many of the things that are missing from the traditional education system.

We are following along with Ramit Sethi's book, I Will Teach You to be Rich. We highly recommend you buy his book and watch his Netflix show.
We go through what a credit card is and the motives of credit card companies. Once we understand how they work, we will be able to create strategies to stay out of debt and make credit cards work for us!
An introduction to our next series on Personal Finance. We will be studying the book I will Teach you to be Rich by Ramit Sethi. He has a great philosophy to money and we can learn a lot from his approach.
Ruthie and I recap the Know What You Believe Series and discuss what we learned and our favorite parts.
The conclusion of Acts. Paul sets sail and arrives in Rome, the center of the world at the time. Although he is under "house arrest" he continues to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Paul faces another trial, this time with Festus. King Agrippa visits and Paul gives his testimony and tries to convince all those listening to believe in Jesus. He is always preaching!
Paul was arrested in Jerusalem and now there is a plot to kill him. He is sent to Caesarea and to the Roman Governor Felix to stand trial. He is under house arrest for 2 years.
Paul arrives in Jerusalem and is quickly arrested. He gives a great speech to the audience that tells of his conversion to Christianity.
Paul travels to Corinth and spends a year and a half building a church family in the city. We have a great discussion about Judgement and what it means to be saved.
Paul and Silas continue preaching the good news. Many believe, but they are thrown in jail after casting out a spirit. God is with them and they are miraculously set free. We see that Luke, the author of the book of Acts, is with them on this journey and is documenting the events as a first hand witness.
The new Gentile believers don't know if they should follow all of the Jewish traditions. The church isn't sure, so they go to Jerusalem and meet with all of the believers. This is a great example of how the church then and now should resolve conflict.
Paul and Barnabas continue their first missionary journey. Just as Jesus saw persecution from the Jews, so did the disciples. But, Paul and Barnabas were not detered! They continued to preach and took their message to the Gentiles. Many believed and were strengthened in their faith.
Paul and Barnabas preached and their message was confirmed through the miraculous signs they performed. The crowds were amazed and called them Greek gods. How do you think they responded to being called gods themselves? Were they performing the miracles or was it the Holy Spirit giving them the power? Listen and see how they responded.
Paul begins his first missionary journey and begins preaching to the Jewish church. How will he be received? Let's see how God begins to grow the church...
James, one of Jesus' closest disciples, is martyred. Then, Peter is arrested and is set to go on public trial. The Christians are scared and their leaders are being killed and arrested. The believers are praying for a miracle! What will happen to Peter, the leader of the early church? Listen to find out...
Peter is questioned for his association with Gentiles and he explains how the Good News of Jesus is meant for EVERYONE and not just Jews. We find out the first time the word "Christians" is used to describe believers. The Good News is preached to the Greeks and other non-Jewish people.
The story of Cornelius the Centurion and how Christianity spread beyond the Jewish People to all of us!
An exciting chapter as God is working to change people's lives. Saul is on his way to arrest Christians when he meets Jesus! He comes face to face with the Lord and Jesus asks him "why are you persecuting me?". Saul is blind for 3 days and when Jesus restores him, he is a changed man. We can all learn from this example of how anyone can be redeemed, no matter what sins you have committed.
The Church is scattered and Phillip takes the Good News to the Samaritans and others...
Stephen gives a speech to the Jewish leaders and gives a history of Israel. He accuses the Jewish leaders of killing the Righteous One and being responsible for his death. The leaders do not take this well and Stephen pays the ultimate price for his faith. The new Christian faith is about to be tested...
The apostles appoint 7 believers to distribute food to the needy so the apostles can focus on preaching the Good News. Then, Stephen (who is full of the Holy Spirit) is arrested and they bring false witnesses against him. The book of Acts is about to make a transition and introduce several new people to God's story. Join us to learn more...
Is there punishment for lying to the Holy Spirit? We find out in chapter 5. God lets the new believers know that he will not accept hypocrisy and there is a high standard for the Church of his Son. Peter and the apostles are arrested again and are told to stop preaching in the name of Jesus, but they stand firm that they must obey God and not men.
It is an exciting time in the new Church...
Peter and John are brought before the religious leaders and told not to preach about Jesus. These are the same people that arrested and killed Jesus. What do you think they said? Would they stop or keep preaching and risk death? Listen to find out...
Peter heals a crippled beggar and gives a speech to the crowds. The church is growing and the Apostles are changed people. They are no longer living in fear, but are bold and preaching the Good News!
This is probably my favorite chapter in the bible and one of the most exciting days in History!
The believers receive the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Peter gives a speech to the people and they are convicted of their sin and turn to God. 3,000 new believers joined the apostles and the Christian faith was born!
We begin the second part of our Series Know What You Believe Part 2. We begin with Acts Chapter 1. This is one of my favorite books of the bible. Join us on the journey of the beginning of the Church and the entire Christian Faith!

We conclude the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. We discuss two ideas of how to make a new habit stick...Ritualize the beginning with a 2 minute drill and make the ending satisfying.
This has been a great book and I recommend everyone buy it.

An introduction to Carol Dweck's book: Mindset. FIXED MINDSET: Believing that your qualities are carved in stone. You have only a certain amount of intelligence, sports ability, artistic talent, business skill, a fixed personality type or a certain moral character. GROWTH MINDSET: Your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies and help from others. Your current skill level is just a starting point for development.

TUTORS
A lot of teaching is in the form of 1-on-1 teaching from tutors. Mark Lepper did research on this and made some great discoveries:
A surefire way to be a BAD tutor:
-Consider yourself a debugger. Explicitly tell the student she has made a mistake and give direct guidance in how to fix the error. None of Lepper’s most effective tutors took such a strictly cognitive, error-correction stance.
How do you become an effective tutor? Lepper gave us the 5 Cs.
1.CONTROL
a. Foster a sense of control in the student, making the student feel that she has command of the material and the capability to learn
2.CHALLENGE
a. Challenge the student, but at a level of difficulty that is within the student’s capability
3.CONFIDENCE
a. Express confidence in the student, assuring the student that the problem she just solved was a difficult one highlighting what the student got correct and not their failures…I will jump ahead to MINDSET and say that you should reward and recognize EFFORT and not failure or success. Effort and trying new things is critical to gaining confidence.
4.CURIOSITY
a. Foster curiosity by asking leading questions and by linking the problem to toher problems the student has seen that appear on the surface to be different.
5.CONTEXTUALIZE
a.Place the problem in a real-world context or in a context from a movie or TV show
WARNING: Never dumb down the material for the sake of self esteem. Most of what expert tutors do is ask questions. They ask leading questions and then ask students to explain their reasoning. They are less likely to give positive feedback...don’t make the teaching about RIGHT AND WRONG. This is not an evaluation, but an exercise in learning and effort.

Jesus is tried by the Romans. He is found guilty - was crucified, died and buried. But, this is not the end of the story!
The Last Supper and Jesus gives the new covenant. Jesus is betrayed and then Peter denies Jesus three times. Finally, Jesus claims to be the Son of God and shocks the religious leaders.
Jesus talks about giving to God and then goes into a discussion about the end of the age...
we hear about Zacchaeus the tax collector that climbs a tree to see Jesus. Jesus enters Jerusalem and is celebrated along the way.
Jesus teaches his followers about being persistent in prayer and how to approach God. Also, he talks to a rich ruler who is missing one thing and we learn about the challenge of wealth and how it can distract us from our faith. Finally, Jesus predicts his death and resurrection before healing a blind man.
We are joined today by Hallie! We are excited to have her with us in the study of Luke 17. Jesus heals 10 lepers and discusses the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus continues with 2 additional parables and contrasts the economy of the world/earth with the economy of heaven.

Luke teaches his disciples and the crowds that follow him. Lessons on money, worry and being prepared for his return.
Jesus teaches the disciples to pray. Jesus drives out demons and confronts the Pharisees and teachers of the law.

Dr. Brooks began his ministry at Tallowood Baptist Church on Sunday, May 17, 1998. He is a graduate of Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth and Baylor University in Waco. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Baylor University, cum laude, in 1984, and his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1987. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Baylor University in 1991.
Alan Duane Brooks was born in Amarillo, Texas, on July 25, 1962. His father was in the Air Force so he spent his childhood and youth in many places. They lived in Alaska during the great Anchorage Earthquake and then in Florida, Missouri, and Illinois. At the age of seven, his family moved to Germany for four years, and returned to Germany for four more years after living in Washington, D. C. He spent his last two years of high school in Great Falls, Montana, before returning to Texas for his higher education.
He married Melanie Jo Freeman of Temple, Texas, on June 9, 1984. Their oldest son, Graham, and his wife, Abigail, reside here in Houston. Their son, Chase, and his wife Brooke, are in Little Rock, Arkansas. Their daughter, Casey, attends Baylor University.
We are joined by 2 guests for our discussion of Luke 9. Liz Grace and George help us read and understand some of the exciting events that unfold in this Chapter that reads like a science fiction novel. Jesus feeds 5,000 and then Peter confirms that he is the Christ. Jesus is transfigured before their eyes on the mountain and they see Moses and Elijah.
Jesus continues to preach and heal. We hear about the faith of the Centurion and go over a little bit of History as we discuss the Roman Empire. You can feel the excitement as the Jewish people are amazed and wondering if the Messiah has come. What are they expecting from the Messiah???

God has given Tyler a passion for partnering with families in the discipleship of students. Jesus states clearly who he is when he says that he is Lord of the Sabbath!!! Jesus continues preaching and gives us the Golden Rule and teaches about not judging others. He also states that wise people not only hear what he says but do what he says!
Ruthie and I were joined by her good friend Liz Grace for this episode. In Chapter 5 we hear several stories of Jesus teaching and healing. One of my favorite stories of the new testament is the healing of the paralyzed man. Jesus states that he has the POWER TO FORGIVE SINS and then backs up his claim by performing a miracle.
