Aicila hosts and produces Business as UNusual to learn from CEOs, Entrepreneurs, Artists, and more what motivated them to forge the path they are on and how they are innovating in their area of influence. This episode we are chatting with Adam Baker Founder of Soda Pup Dog Toys.
Adam had a vision several years ago- he wanted to fill an empty space in the dog toy market and make toys that were tough, innovative, and do it in a way that was safe for dogs and the planet. Bringing years of corporate experience into this passion, he was able to navigate the twists and turns to build a thriving business creating FDA compliant dog toys, all made in the USA.
Adam serves as Head Dog, as well as toy designer, social media and marketing manager (that means he sits in bed at 11:30 at night and posts to Instagram), janitor (occasionally dragging the vacuum cleaner from home in to clean the office carpet), packaging designer, photographer, and jack-of-all trades. In entrepreneurship, you do it all!

In this episode of "Business as UNusual," we hear from Genevieve Piturro, a former television marketing executive in New York City, who found her purpose in an unexpected way.
Piturro left a successful, twenty year career when a little girl’s question (“What are pajamas?”) changed the course of her life forever. At that pivotal moment, Genevieve decided to jump off the corporate ladder and began delivering pajamas and books to children in shelters. In 2001, she founded Pajama Program, which has been recognized nationwide for both its success and Genevieve’s story. Genevieve believes that everyone has a purpose and encourages listeners to find and follow their own. She emphasizes the importance of human connection and living authentically, urging people not to accept and go along with the status quo. Throughout the episode, Genevieve shares inspiring stories and offers guidance on how to make a change, whether by jumping or sliding, depending on individual circumstances. Listeners are encouraged to visit Genevieve's website, https://www.genevievepiturro.com/, and reach out with questions or ideas. They value the power of multiple perspectives and believe it provides more options for their audience. Dror's journey started in high school, where they were inspired by teachers who emphasized appreciating every moment and questioning power. Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with Peggy a Headshot Strategist and Founder of the TimeBenders Community.
Peggy is a professional photographer with over 30 years of experience. During the pandemic, she was unable to pursue her passion due to restrictions. However, she discovered a new avenue for her skills by offering consultations on Clubhouse and Zoom. She started talking about branding and realized the importance of headshots in marketing strategies. A person she met suggested she trademark herself as the "headshot strategist," and although Peggy initially dismissed the idea, she soon embraced it. Within three weeks, she established a standalone program and began helping people from all over the world with their headshots. As demand grew, Peggy expanded her services to include teaching photographers in a comprehensive certification course. Now, her main focus is supporting other photographers in running successful businesses. Peggy's journey unfolded unexpectedly, but it has become a thriving and fulfilling chapter in her professional life.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with K.B. Wagers a science fiction author.
K.B. Wagers is an accomplished author whose writing career took off in 2016. Since then, they have been publishing books at an impressive rate, typically releasing one book per year. However, in both 2020 and 2021, they went above and beyond by publishing two books each year. All of their works have been traditionally published. One of their notable series is a set of two trilogies called the space operas, which follow the adventures of a gun runner turned empress. These books have been published by Orbit Books. Additionally, K.B. Wagers has a series of standalone novels set in the same world, titled the NeoG Adventures. These novels, published by Harper Voyager, revolve around a crew known as the near Earth orbital guard, similar to a space coast guard. The story revolves around the crew's close-knit relationships, as well as their involvement in the boarding game, an intramilitary competition.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with Nora DiNuzzo, CEO of Pitcher.
Growing up, one thing Ms. DiNuzzo never aspired to be was an entrepreneur.
Running your own company was for the incredibly wealthy (Mr. Burns) or the incredibly innovative (Doc Brown). She was neither (according to her, we at BiCurean disagree - we experience her as quite innovative!)
The past few years she's learned a secret about entrepreneurs. The thing many of them have in common – they desperately want to fix something that drives them nuts.
As it turns out – throughout her life and career, a lot of things drove her nuts.
So nuts that in October 2021, she quit a VP-level job at an ad agency to start her own consultancy – Pitcher – to help small businesses grow.
Because the fact that agencies could rarely find a way to work with companies <$25mm in annual revenue drove her nuts.
Because she believes that small businesses deserve to grow, too.
In April 2023, she got a call from a friend that she never planned for – with an offer to create something she never considered doing less than two years into being a founder.
A second company.
Because the fact that so many brilliant agencies continuously struggle to grow drove him nuts.
As it turns out – it drives her nuts, too.
So nuts that she said yes – and Blood Sweat & Tears was born.
Yes, born. she has given birth to two human children – and two businesses – in the last 7 years.
There is not a damn thing women can’t do.

Delvin believes that finding a middle ground and working together is crucial to solving these problems effectively, without resorting to extreme measures that don't work. Throughout the episode, Delvin reflects on their own podcasting journey, the challenges of finding guests, and their mission to promote diversity and discuss important issues. They highlight the neglected topics such as mental health in black men and serve as an eye-opener for listeners to understand the challenges faced by certain communities. The Acacia Co. was founded by TaRea, Natalie, and Thu-Hong in response to the ever-growing need for integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into the workplace - the right way.
There's a saying that goes, "organizations are easy to run, it just becomes difficult when you add people to the mix." The striking reality that every organization is faced with - an organization does need people to function. People started the organization and people run the organization.
People are the organization. The Acacia Co. takes a practical approach that focuses on both. We look at the art and the science of integrating diversity and inclusion into business operations, shining a light on all areas of the organization and supporting management teams with project implementation.

On this episode of Business as UNusual, we are discussing the prevalent issue of gun violence and mass shootings in the US. The host questions whether the right to own a gun for hobby or personal security is worth more than public safety and the lives of others. (No is her answer.) Women are spearheading a movement to address gun violence and advocating for gun eradication laws. The podcast highlights the "Here for the Kids" movement and includes in-person interviews with volunteers and audio clips from people involved in the movement. The aim of the podcast is to inspire listeners to get involved and create a community that works for everyone. The speaker shares their motivations and thoughts on gun violence in the country and discusses their journey to take action for the safety of their own child and others.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with Nate Ishe Lappegaard of The Kite and Dart Group.
Kite and Dart has New Strategies for a New Era of Entrepreneurs Traditional business practices can feel antiquated at best, and slimy at worst. If you're searching for a different way of doing business, then you're their kind of entrepreneur. The kind that wants to make a difference in the world. The kind that's dedicated to equity, inclusion, and social justice. The kind that measures success not only in dollars but also in contributions to the world.
Traditional business strategies were created for people who only care about the bottom line; what works for them doesn’t necessarily work for you. New entrepreneurs need help navigating these confusing waters. Veteran entrepreneurs need a trusted partner to help them adjust to changes in their lives or the economic landscape.
Whether it's defining goals or figuring out how to reach them, we all need support if we're going to achieve the lofty heights that we've imagined.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with Dr. Kathy Gonzales the Conflict Doctor.
Born and raised in the sun-drenched twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean, Dr. Kathy Gonzales helps nonprofits deal with conflict.
After practicing as a family lawyer for a few years, she decided to go back to school (because, why not). She gained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine School of Law in Malibu, California. During this time, she also gained a new passion- the what, the why and the how of conflict engagement!
This new passion continued to develop until she could no longer resist its pull and set off down a new career path, which led me to start a new business and begin doctoral studies at the same time! I went on to graduate from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Conflict Analysis & Resolution, and have been privileged to do some really exciting and impactful work across the world, which has honed my skills as a conflict engagement specialist and as an educator.
What she likes about her work is that no two days are exactly the same, because each client is different and presents her with a new challenge. In addition to my extensive knowledge and experience, she brings all my energy, creativity, and humor to guide and support them through their unique conflict journey.
When she is not serving her clients, you can find her cheerfully cooking all kinds of scrumptious Caribbean dishes in her kitchen, tending to the vegetable garden in my backyard, or learning about a new culture in some corner of our world.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with Dr. Bre Gentile about Dr. G’s Lab.
Dr. Bre believes that products and services designed for users should be designed with users. She works with users at every stage of the process — every design sprint, every audit, every iteration.
She’s trained to observe, to interview, and to define emotions and preferences by assessing human aptitude and human behaviors. She’s studied hundreds of users ranging from three to sixty-five years old in lab settings and natural environments. She has presented and published studies on user experience with chatbots and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and write for Psychology Today. She’s also conducted research in communication competence, psychopathology, and human behavior and motivation.
She has a PhD and MS in Clinical Psychology from Palo Alto University, an MA in Counseling Psychology from Golden Gate University, and a BA in Psychology from Gonzaga University. I’ve worked with nonprofit, startup, and corporate clients including the Center for Youth Wellness, Google, X2AI, and MentorHub.
Traumatic experiences and toxic stress can change our neural pathways, impacting how we make decisions and even what our eyes notice. Dr. G’s Lab offers a new approach, integrating emotional intelligence and emotional design throughout the design process.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business. This episode we are chatting with Jessi Burg of Outgrow Your Garage.
The idea began when founder and CEO of Outgrow Your Garage, Jessi Burg, experienced the ebbs and flows of running a seasonal landscaping business in Denver. It became so busy that she had to turn customers away.
That’s when she knew that she needed to expand, but didn’t know where to start. She knew she had to hire to meet client demand, but first needed to determine what she could afford.
Would hiring a new employee bring in more revenue, or did she need more revenue in order to hire?
It was times like these during her five years with Pears to Perennials that made her wish she had a textbook with all of the answers.
She discovered that many small business owners, especially those who run service-based businesses, often have to be in two places at once – working the billable hours while also running the administrative side behind the scenes – which can make expansion difficult to manage.
Jessi decided to cater to her peers by creating courses built around her personal experiences in business.
The idea is to help small business owners everywhere continue to grow and prosper with a virtual, easy-to-manage structure designed to take the guesswork out of business expansion. There is so much to know when it comes to running a business. We are here to help.

Business As Unusual, is a series produced by BiCurean Consulting. We present Entrepreneurs, Innovators, CEOs, & Founders who are innovating the way we do business.
This episode we spoke with Jeff Leitner about his lifetime of working to create better options for us all. For 20 years, he’s helped companies, governments, institutions, and nonprofits identify and realize new opportunities — to expand their reach, increase their share, and change their worlds. Together, we’ve created disruptive new products, services, programs, and approaches.
His clients and collaborators include the U.S. Department of State, Starbucks, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, University of Southern California, TED, Clear Channel, UBS, Allsteel, National Endowment for the Arts, NASA, Harvard Medical School, Panera, Jim Joseph Foundation, The GRAMMY Foundation, and the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education.
He led the invention of the first doctorate in social innovation, a new model for supporting emerging democracies, a monthly forum on business ethics, and a groundbreaking approach to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He launched a graduate school of nursing and the now-standard model for taxi advertising. He hatched new tools for supporting musicians and making sense of office culture.
He’s enlisted and led this work with hundreds of remarkable experts, practitioners, and guest thinkers. He’s been part of tackling an A-to-Z of challenges — from the arts, board development, and casual dining to unwritten rules, voting, workplace design, and Zen. His work has been featured in Fast Company, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and Inc. It’s been highlighted on podcasts and public radio. It’s been recorded for posterity in books on business, politics, leadership, innovation, and stopping human trafficking. And it’s won a few awards.
Along the way, he’s served as innovator-in-residence at a major university, fellow at a DC think tank, and senior fellow at a prominent foundation. I have launched a philanthropic lab, an international design initiative, a hit podcast, and a streetwear brand. I have given talks around the world and lectures at a number of universities, including at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and Stanford’s d. school. He co-wrote a book on my original approach to social change.
My wife and I live in suburban Chicago, about an hour from where our daughter goes to graduate school.

Business as Unusual, a podcast series by BiCurean Consulting. features people saying yes to the opportunity to create new ways of doing business. This episode we are speaking with Dr. Janine Stitcher and Scott Schutte of the Healthy Behavior Institute.
The Healthy Behavior Institute is actually born of a need we’ve learned from over 18 years of providing top-tier personal training services to thousands of clients. Yes, it comes from being coaches ourselves.
See, we (Scott and Nate) started off like many coaches. Deciding that we loved fitness and helping people, we set out to be fitness professionals. We took every course we could. We wanted to be the best and do right by our clients.
During the years that followed of working and consistently furthering our education, we continued to be frustrated with some clients' lack of progress. We could get them to work hard in the gym, but they were still so inconsistent with what they needed to do outside of the gym. We knew what our clients needed to do to lose the weight and get in the shape they wanted to, but saw them seemingly unable to consistently execute even the simplest of strategies. We knew what principles they needed to implement. And what's more, is that they knew we were right. They would agree with the assessment of their nutrition and their lifestyle, but they still stumbled and failed.
Sure, there were exceptions to this rule. Some clients were compliant that we could point to that showed what was possible. But it wasn't the majority. We knew it wasn't right to just blame them and their supposed lack of willpower. They were hiring us to guide them to their goals and we were missing some tools to do it. Our quest was to discover or create a way for more of our clients to predictably achieve their goals.
Then fate stepped in.
Dr. Janine Stichter (Dr. J) started training at our gym. It just so happened that she had a Ph.D. in behavior change. After some inter-workout conversations, it was blatantly evident that her experience and understanding of the underpinnings of behavior was the missing link in the fitness industry.
It wasn't long before she became part of our team. And with our respective expertise, we combined the world of psychology with the world of fitness, and our clients benefited. Our client retention (which was already good) got better. Clients commented that the customized paths we provided for them to reach their goals were easier to follow. Our impact on our clients increased and so did our income.
We realized in talking with other coaches and business owners that they also wanted to realize these changes with clients and also wanted to create greater value for their clients and increase their revenue.
That’s why we created scalable systems that didn't require coaches to be Dr. J but have the core education and processes to execute in their fitness facilities with their clients. The Healthy Behavior Institute was created to share this information and these systems.

Business as Unusual, a podcast series by BiCurean Consulting. features people saying yes to the opportunity to create new ways of doing business. This week we are speaking with Robinne Alexander of Robinne Alexander & Associates and Melanated Moms of Children with Autism Initiative.
Robinne Alexander is an unapologetic servant leader and consultant with over 14 years of experience in leading and creating initiatives that help fortify the mission of others.
Born in the small town of Port Arthur, TX, Robinne Alexander was always determined to walk to the beat of her own drum. She attended Port Arthur public schools where she was a good student but struggled to keep up with the status quo of traditional classroom learning. After failing and repeating multiple grade levels in school, she knew that something different had to happen. Against her parent's will, she dropped out of 10th grade still determined to figure out life, yet again, on her own terms. It goes without saying that there was no indication of the remarkable journey her life would quickly unfold in the years to come. All the while, unknowingly having Autism, Dyslexia and ADD.
In 2005 she found herself having a pivotal opportunity that led to her working with her first celebrity from BET Network as a Personal Assistant. Over the next few years of learning the business of being an entrepreneur, she eventually found herself working with more television stars, sports figures, and all levels of government and C-Suite executives for her own entrepreneurial ventures.
Prior to becoming a full-time Autism consultant and advocate, she was known as the Millennial's "go-to" licensed financial expert. Some of her most notable exposure include being an Academy Instructor for Live Richer Academy, and a guest financial consultant for Black Enterprise.
After 2 wildly successful businesses and working with the Autism community, she knows what it means to be neurologically diverse and still achieve meaningful change for herself and others.

Business as Unusual, a podcast series by BiCurean Consulting. features people saying yes to the opportunity to create new ways of doing business. This week we are speaking with Stephanie Hurne about getting your words out.
For as long as she can remember Stephanie has written stories. She still remember being at primary school speaking to her teachers about the fantasy worlds she'd created, or demanding (!) that her friends act out the scripts she'd written.
Eventually she went to university to study Media Production, specialising in script writing because when else in her life was she going to be able to dedicate one year of her life to her own little world?
After many years and a lot of "Dutch courage" she self published her first book “The Light” but it went well and between that book and it’s follow up she sold around 800 copies.
In 2018 she came up with the idea for The Diseased but didn’t let herself start writing it until 2020 because she had to finish the second half of The Light.
In the four years since she first ever hit publish she's learnt a lot, and after setting up her own indie publishing house I’m learning even more. She's hoping one day she can use all the lessons she's learning on her own books to help other writers get their stories out into the world.

One is never too old, or young for that matter, to truly commit to, and go after, a dream. It just takes a lot of hard work, planning, and belief in one's self.

Rich had a personal epiphany in that as he hit middle-age and was looking in that self-reflective and metaphorical mirror, He asked himself the question, "why Rich are you not doing your passion?" He didn't have an answer for himself and decided right then and there to commit, with all his heart, to bringing his passion and dream to fruition. He often joke with others that when he hit his "mid-life crisis," he didn't go buy a convertible and get a young girlfriend, He instead went out and bought a new guitar and started writing and recording his songs!

Beyond Inclusion Group provides comprehensive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) consulting and training services that increase employee engagement, innovation and performance by empowering leaders to strengthen and leverage diversity, reduce bias, promote inclusion and institutional change.
Born and raised in Spain, Maria moved to the United States right after finishing college. She wanted to explore new philosophies and religions other than Catholicism which is the main religion in Spain. Some Spanish friends had moved to Seattle to study metaphysics and she felt very drawn to the topic so she decided to explore it. She left everything that was known to her- her family, her partner, her country. She'd never thought about the need to have legal documentation or anything like that. She was following a deep calling and that was the only thing that was important to her. It has been a long winding road for her to get to my true calling of doing social and racial justice work. Her calling is fueled by her experience as an immigrant overall and about the difficulties she had to advance professionally and to feel that she truly belongs.
