This is a place for stories to gather, a human library. It’s based in Changshu, China, managed by a team of international high school students, but it doesn’t belong to any physical location. We’ll be bringing in diverse cultural experiences from every definition of “culture” with new guests each week. Episodes are released every Saturday, 8:01 pm CST.
In a callback to our first series, another non-traditional musician, Randy, will be chatting with us this summer. Many years ago, he decided to move from the US to China, and he set off another string of changes in his life.

What better to start our new series than a discussion about food? Sonia Zhou joins us this week to talk about the different ethnic minorities she has encountered in China, including her own, the Minnan (闽南) tribe, and how we should respond to new information.

Traditional Chinese instruments as a whole and the Er Hu (a long fiddle-like instrument which is held like a cello) are often left on the fringes of modern music, but Jessie Xiao joins us this week to spend a whole episode talking about it. Our conversation also touches on the process of building up China Band, an entire orchestra of original music pieces, and her experience as a young person learning traditional music.
When it comes to music, there are few out there who carry so much of a passion for it and take as much time thinking about it than Thomas Li, self-described as the only rapper in our school (CSC). This episode discusses topics including the process behind rapping, self-expression, and what being an artist means. We also feature “Truth,” self-composed and performed by Thomas.
