Cyber Security is a career field that millions of people are trying to pursue and one of the first areas of interest that comes up is hacking. It is no surprise that Hollywood has done a fantastic job of making hacking “look sexy,” but is that the reality? When it comes to Cyber Security jobs in general, hacking represents a very small portion of the available jobs. In fact, if you went to a job board right now, you would find that the amount of hacking jobs are not even close to the amount of defensive jobs. The truth is that the most job opportunities an demand is on the defensive side. With that being said, does that mean that you should literally abandon learning hacking at all?

With every Cyber Security certification in the industry, there will be some point where the certification vendor decides to update the exam. A large majority of the certification vendors use roughly a three-year cycle so that people are relatively current when they pass the exam. Whenever a vendor decides that they are going to update the exam, they will also usually give around six months’ notice so that people that are preparing can make the decision on which version to take. The CISSP is coming up on a change of their own but since only the format is changing and not the material covered, the timeframe is a lot shorter.

We have people coming from both related career fields (IT, programming, etc.) and from completely unrelated career fields (journalism, legal, etc.). With all these different backgrounds, we still tend to have people asking the same or similar questions that can help provide all people with valuable knowledge. Additionally, as people climb the corporate ladder and reach higher technical or leadership roles, it is helpful to look at where new people are today so that we can help them accelerate their career today.
