In this solo episode, Arlene Pace Green digs into the people you spend your time with, or what she calls in her book You Deserve to Love Your Job your "people set." Season 5 has been all about strategies that actually move the needle on your career and your life, and this one goes right to the heart of that: the circle you build shapes who you become. If yours has grown stagnant, if you've been great at keeping old friends but not so great at starting new ones, or if you just want to nurture what you already have, this episode is for you.

Join us as we explore:

  • Why loneliness has roughly doubled in less than 40 years, and how the research on isolation, connection, and purpose reframes friendship as essential work, not a nice to have.
  • Why friends and connections outside your family often offer more empathy and genuine support than family can, and what the research says about adult friendships and self-esteem.
  • The three lenses to evaluate your current circle: What (are you around people doing what you want to do?), How (are you around people living the way you want to live?), and Why (are you serving the people your gifts are called to serve?).
  • Arlene's personal story of leaning on other business owners when she started Enelra Talent Solutions, and why generous, further-along mentors are non-negotiable for growth.
  • The reminder from her husband's grandmother Pearl C. Green: "Show me who your friends are and I'll show you who you are," and why that quiet truth is worth taking seriously.
  • The "liking gap" and why most of us underestimate how much other people enjoyed talking with us, and how to use that research to feel more confident starting new conversations this week.
  • Why gradual vulnerability builds real connection, and how asking one "why" question can take a conversation from small talk to something that actually matters.
  • The power of weak ties: why research shows loose acquaintances often open more doors than your closest friends, and one simple move you can make this week to reconnect with someone who went cold.
  • Arlene's honest take on being an introvert-extrovert who dreads networking but genuinely loves getting to know new people, and why saying yes anyway is part of the work.

Whether you're building a new circle from scratch, nurturing the one you have, or reconnecting with someone who slipped away, this conversation is full of honest reflection and practical moves you can start this week. In this episode, Arlene sits down with her dear friend Jeff Johnson, executive coach and founder of J3 Coaching, for a real and practical conversation about resilience and how we actually recover after a career or life setback. It's one of our Essentials episodes, a favorite past conversation distilled down to its biggest and most powerful ideas.

With over 25 years in organizational and leadership development, Jeff has spent the better part of his career in this space, and today he brings both theory and practicality to a topic that touches all of us at some point. If you've ever been knocked down by a loss, a layoff, a project that fell apart, or life just being hard, this one's for you.

Join us as we explore:

  • Why resilience is timeless, and what the Weebles wobble toy has to teach us about getting knocked back and bouncing forward at whatever pace is right for you.
  • Two simple ways to tell if you're actually being resilient in the moment: how much time you spend fully immersed in the loss, and what direction you're facing on the continuum from where you are now to where you want to be.
  • Why every step spent going backward can cost you more than you think, and why that lost time only pays off if you learned something along the way.
  • The power of self-talk and why most of us hear the negative voice louder than the positive, and how turning up the volume on the encouraging one changes what feels possible.
  • How to break down something overwhelming into a next step you can actually take, using Jeff's real example of leading a cross-departmental return-to-office team during the height of COVID.
  • Why slowing down before you jump in often gets you there faster, and the questions to ask yourself before taking on something new: Have I done this before? Who can I reach out to? What resources are already available?
  • The "screen door" trick for pausing before you speak or act, and why that small pause can save you from wishing you had a do-over.
  • How to support someone else through a hard time without pushing them, by giving them permission to name what they feel and offering a new angle rather than a directive.
  • The difference between bouncing back and bouncing forward, and why some losses change us in ways that mean we don't return to who we were, but we move toward who we're becoming.
  • Why writing things down during a hard season can help you honor the moment, make sense of your own experience, and see your own progress when you look back.
  • Jeff's closing reminder: the fact that you're still here should count for something, and you might be more resilient than you think.

Whether you're in the middle of a hard season right now, walking alongside someone who is, or just want practical tools to build resilience before you need it, this conversation is full of honest talk and takeaways you can start using this week. Share this episode with a friend who could use a real conversation about bouncing forward.

In this episode, Arlene sits down with one of her besties Dr. Rosalyn Pitts Clark for an honest and real conversation about the things every working professional is quietly navigating: our emotions, growing older in our careers, and the mental exhaustion that shapes the choices we make. It's a little different from our recent career-focused episodes, two friends, two cups of coffee, and a real conversation about working well and living well. If you've ever wondered why we talk about feelings more than ever yet seem to manage them worse, this one's for you.

Join us as we explore:

  • Why we're more emotionally aware than past generations but often less emotionally intelligent, and what the research on college students reveals about managing our feelings.
  • The "feelings wheel" and why naming what you feel, with more granularity than mad, sad, or glad, is the first step to managing it.
  • Three practical strategies for emotional intelligence: naming your emotions, deep listening, and building empathy by assuming everyone is doing the best they can.
  • Why co-regulation matters and how staying calm yourself can help steady a heated moment for everyone.
  • Aging in the workplace: what it means to become the "senior" member of your team, and how to define your identity and value in that space.
  • Why lifelong learning beats leaning on experience, and how the most effective leaders hold their knowledge and expertise loosely.
  • The quiet power of multi-generational relationships, and why avoiding self-isolation keeps you sharp, valued, and connected as you grow older.
  • Decision fatigue: why the quality of our choices declines when we're tired or mentally taxed – and why even judges rule differently as the day goes on.
  • Simple systems to protect your best thinking: meal prepping, "eat the frog," simplifying your wardrobe, and knowing when not deciding is the smartest decision.

Whether you're working on understanding your emotions, navigating what it means to grow older in your career, or simply trying to make better decisions with less mental energy, this conversation is full of honest talk and takeaways you can start using this week. This is an Essentials episode -- a focused, condensed version of one of our favorite past conversations, re-edited to bring its biggest ideas front and center. Whether it's your first listen or a revisit, here's what we get into:

In this episode, Arlene sits down with Raquel Eatmon – former TV news anchor, speaker, author, founder of the Woman of Power Leadership Conference, and CEO of Rising Media, LLC. Raquel has spent her career helping others lead and live more authentically, and in this conversation she gets honest about resilience, bold risk-taking, and what it really means to bet on yourself. If you've ever felt like you had to pretend to be someone you're not to succeed, this is the episode that gives you permission to stop.

Join us as we explore:

  • Why "fake it till you make it" doesn't actually work – and what to do instead when you're in a room where you feel like an imposter.
  • The bathroom moment that changed everything: how overhearing a hard truth led Raquel to a turning point in her leadership.
  • What it really means to bet on yourself – and why, for Raquel, betting on yourself means honoring yourself.
  • How to lead a team that doesn't know you yet, by leaning on what you already do well instead of pretending to know it all.
  • Why authenticity isn't about oversharing – it's about knowing your values, your principles, and what you uniquely bring to the table.
  • The power of seeing yourself as a business: how thinking of yourself as a brand changes the systems, boundaries, and guiding principles you put in place.
  • The questions from Good to Great that Raquel returns to again and again – on purpose, brutal facts, integrity, and people-pleasing.
  • Why an incredible life doesn't just happen – and how small, intentional steps take the pressure off trying to "be it all" right now.
  • Raquel's powerful origin story – from a CBS anchor desk to walking away without a backup plan, raised by three women who led without ever calling it leadership.

Whether you're early in your career, navigating a bold pivot, or simply trying to show up more fully as yourself, this conversation will shift how you think about success, authenticity, and the quiet power of betting on you. Share this episode with someone who needs permission to stop pretending and start honoring who they are.

In this episode, Arlene goes solo to unpack the framework everyone was talking about after the Season 5 premiere: the PIE Model. Building on her conversation with executive and author Harvey Coleman, Arlene takes you slice by slice through Performance, Image, and Exposure – pairing each one with the research that backs it up and the concrete moves you can make this week. If you've ever watched someone less impressive than you get the promotion and wondered "what is going on?", this is the episode that explains it.

Join us as we explore:

  • Why performance is only the price of admission – and what actually differentiates you once everyone in the room is already good at their job.
  • The 10/30/60 rule decoded: why performance is 10%, image is 30%, and exposure is a staggering 60% of what drives advancement.
  • Why you get paid on performance but promoted on potential – two different currencies, two different conversations.
  • What "image" really means (hint: it's not your haircut) – and how to shape what people say about you when you're not in the room.
  • The research behind impression management, and why making your work transparent isn't bragging – it's leadership.
  • The three pillars of exposure, backed by decades of research: the strength of weak ties, structural holes, and the sponsor effect.
  • Why your network position – not just your effort – is the dominant variable in your career trajectory once you've cleared the performance bar.
  • The critical difference between mentorship and sponsorship: mentors open the door, sponsors pull you through.
  • Two honest nuances most people skip: why the PIE levers don't pay off equally for everyone, and why visibility without performance is worse than being invisible.
  • Three practical moves – one for Performance, one for Image, one for Exposure – you can start applying this week.

Whether you're early in your career, navigating a mid-career pivot, or coaching the next generation of leaders, this episode will shift how you think about why careers really move – and what to do about yours. Share this episode with your team, your mentees, anyone navigating a career with rules they were never taught.

Today in the show, Arlene welcomes STEMinist Dr. Deepali Palta as she takes us back to what sparked her interest in a STEM career, the reality of being a female in these areas, the many opportunities choosing the STEM pathways can bring to your professional development, and much more.
