In this deeply introspective episode, Frank and Jess explore the interplay between personal growth, vulnerability, and the wisdom found in tarot cards. Their conversation weaves through themes of emotional processing, professional relationships, and the profound insights that can arise from seemingly mundane experiences.

  • Jess shares her recent experience of emotional vulnerability, including spending "a more than normal amount of time crying yesterday" and making a difficult decision to decline an opportunity to maintain balance in her life.

  • Frank opens up about his fears and joys in witnessing Jess' personal growth, expressing vulnerability about his worry that Jess might "tire of me and move on to other things" as she continues to grow and thrive.

  • Discussion of the balance between professional distance and personal connection in their work, with Frank reflecting on the joy he finds in witnessing Jess' transformation: "I get front row seats for the most great show, greatest show on earth."

  • Exploration of two tarot cards: the Eight of Swords and the Wheel of Fortune. Jess describes the Eight of Swords as being "stuck, but not really stuck," using the metaphor of focusing on a locked door while missing an open window.

  • Insights on breaking free from self-imposed limitations, with Frank relating the Eight of Swords to a recent chess game where he got caught up in one line of thinking and missed a simpler solution.

  • Discussion of the Wheel of Fortune card, with Jess explaining it as a reminder to "come back to the center of the wheel" when life feels chaotic, and Frank sharing his perspective on feeling less attached to the ups and downs of life.

Memorable quotes:

  • Jess: "I don't know how most of the world gets by in life, not crying as much as I do. But so much to cry about."

  • Frank: "I have a deep resonant joy in experiencing the world of the other in a very deep way."

  • Jess on the Eight of Swords: "The thoughts alone are what are keeping us feeling trapped."

  • Frank on the Wheel of Fortune: "I don't really see a big difference between the successes and the failures actually. They seem both to be narratives."

  • Jess: "The inside of the wheel and the outside of the wheel are the same wheel."

  • Frank, reflecting on the simple joys of life: "I was just in tears of the awe of it, the Grand Canyon ness of the simple, mundane human existence of life, of just being."

This session offers a fascinating glimpse into how tarot can be used as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. Through Frank's reading, we explore his current struggle with feeling flat and the tension between his enjoyment of recreational activities (like chess and biking) and a nagging sense that he should be doing more. The cards reveal a complex interplay between the need to refill one's emotional cup (King of Cups), the practice of developing new skills (Eight of Pentacles), and the mental habits or protective behaviors that might be holding Frank back (Devil and Seven of Wands). The reading also touches on themes of past regrets or perceived failures (Five of Swords) and how they might be influencing Frank's current state. Ultimately, the Page of Pentacles emerges as an anchor, suggesting a return to beginner's mind and the importance of staying present in each moment.

In this thought-provoking session, Frank and Jess venture into the uncharted territory of using artificial intelligence for self-discovery and personal transformation. Frank introduces his work with Claude, an AI model developed by Anthropic, which he has tailored through meticulously designed prompts to act as a mirror for deep introspection.

For listeners new to the concept, prompts are the initial instructions given to an AI that significantly shape the subsequent interaction. They are a way to "program" the AI to better serve specific purposes, like fostering self-awareness.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thoughtfully crafted AI prompts can turn large language models like Claude into potent tools for self-exploration and growth
  • The compassionate, validating responses from the AI may feel threatening to these protective parts, illuminating areas where we struggle to receive care
  • Although AI is not sentient, the insights and emotions it draws out are real and come from within us
  • Interacting with AI mirrors can reveal our underlying hopes, insecurities, and the inherent variability of these systems

Throughout the episode, Jess fearlessly shares her inner world, including a defensive part activated by the AI's supportive words. Together, Frank and Jess tenderly explore what emerges, modeling curiosity and compassion.

As Jess observes, "There's something about this, as I am seeing it from the outside, that feels like a mirror to me... a particularly clear mirror that can be a great tool for getting to know self in new ways."

Though the AI's responses were terser than Frank expected, they still catalyzed profound insights for Jess. The episode concludes with a touching reflection on owning our internal experiences and the courage to share this cutting-edge exploration.

Frank notes, "Everything I'm experiencing is coming from me, from myself... There is not an external here... everything that's happening is happening within each of us."

Join Frank and Jess in this intimate, pioneering journey into using AI for self-understanding and healing. Witness how even an artificial "mirror" can powerfully reflect our deepest human needs, fears, and potential for growth.

After listening, take a moment to notice: What parts of yourself came forward as you engaged with this episode? How might you bring more awareness to the protective parts of your own psyche?

Frank and Jess share the practice of softening, the most amazing antidote to defensiveness. Softening connects us to a fuller sense of self, by creating space for our “negative” parts. This detox process can be slow and scary, but it leads to more flow and energy to take action naturally, without having to push ourselves.Recorded 4/10/2024New to Feel This? In this deeply personal and revelatory episode, Frank vulnerably shares about a profound setback he recently faced and the powerful emotions of grief and shame that arose in its wake. Jess holds space for Frank's authentic expression, as they navigate the complex terrain of grief, shame, and the inner child's longing for joy and connection.

Through their dialogue, Frank and Jess model the transformative potential of being witnessed in our rawest experiences. They explore the importance of allowing all emotions to be felt and expressed, without trying to bypass or "fix" the discomfort. As Frank touches the depth of his grief, Jess mirrors back his experience with empathy and presence, creating a safe container for his tender unfolding.

The conversation illuminates the power of meeting challenging emotions with compassionate curiosity, and the healing that can occur when we feel truly seen and held in our vulnerability. Frank and Jess's exchange also highlights the value of honoring the natural ebb and flow of emotional states, allowing space for both the heaviness of difficult feelings and the lightness of laughter and play.

As they make space for the heavier emotions, the energy shifts as they touch on the topic of AI and its potential as a tool for self-reflection and growth. This pivot in focus serves as a reminder of the multidimensionality of the human experience, and the importance of integrating both the light and the shadow as we navigate the journey of self-discovery.

Through their authentic and presence-filled dialogue, Frank and Jess invite listeners into a space of emotional exploration, vulnerability, and the transformative power of being witnessed in our truth.

We explore what collaboration means, what it looks like, and why it’s important. It starts with bringing in the gifts of our individual awareness and being willing to show up as we are.

Also, we take a little dive into the capitalistic drive to stay productive at all costs. How deep does it run in us and what happens when we finally stop trying?

In this week's episode I, Frank, share the culmination of the last years's battle over the guardianship of my handicapped brother. Jess and I stay connected, present and attuned, as I share this story of triumph of open heartedness in the most difficult of circumstances- a previously vitriolic family situation which found itself in a court battle.Jess and I walk through the telling, step by step, energetic hand in hand, of how I resisted the temptation of defensiveness, which led to resolution and joining of the previously warring parties. It's truly an inspiring story of vulnerability over defense, and connection in the face of antagonism and conflict. I am especially proud to share this episode, which means a tremendous deal to me. It marks a significant turning point in my life, and the lives of my father and brothers as well. I hope you are moved by it.Recorded March 6th, 2024--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/feelthis/message

As the conversation continues, Jess sees Frank's agitation as a spot of color rather than a wash over the whole canvas. A connected exploration follows, including how we learn to surf the waves of our feelings and parts with growing and nuanced skill. When parts ask, "Did I make a mistake?" can we rejoice with our contraction? Can we say yes to our nearly overwhelming feelings and beliefs and stories? How do we say yes to our no's? The episode ends with a content cliffhanger that Frank and Jess are excited to explore in the next episode.

Lots of gaps to mind, each offering an infinite richness in their mystery. Join us for the open and courageous in-the-moment exploration of relationship and presence.

In part two Frank’s and Jess’s parts quickly get all tangled up in a mini drama of judgments and apology after Frank retroactively says the thing he was afraid Jess might hear as criticism… and she does. Or, rather, her parts do! This gives us a chance to return to a question from episode 58: Can we choice-fully make meaning when our parts are triggered? We also look at what is the “Self” and is it a part or simply who we are?

Jess and Frank enter into a wintery conversation, one which Jess likens to two hermits meeting during a break from their separate retreats from the world. The tone is introspective and deliberate.

In the first section, both Jess and Frank allow themselves to let go more into a flow in the episode, allowing for a relaxing of their 'doing,' task-oriented minds, easing into a present moment conscious and interconnected "we" space. They open to the discomfort of this unknown, acknowledging and embracing the anxiousness about stepping into it. This leads to a mutual increased sense of aliveness in the moment, in which Frank feels encouraged to reveal his unfinished trauma around criticism. A trauma which causes him to hold concerns about others feeling criticized by him.

Jess asks him directly if he sees that dynamic show up on the podcast and his response is authentic and enlivening, and sets the stage for next week's episode.

When we put ourselves and our creations “out there” we can’t control how others will respond. In this episode, more connected and coming in with different points of view, Frank and Jess dive into a discussion about social media. Frank sees any response as an ultimately positive move, while Jess is aware of her protective parts pushing a “I don’t care what people think” message.

After a lovely meditation, today’s episode finds Frank in flow creating music and Jessica watching with curiosity the parts she has that seemingly want to paint… not painting but instead finding distraction through random to-do’s. A connected We Space is cultivated by Frank and Jess naming parts that want to come forward, others that want to hold back, and which are feeling ambivalent. All this leads to the beginnings of a conversation both are interested in about how (and why!) we show up on social media.

(Re-release - Originally recorded in August 2022) The Modes of Communication are fundamental to our conversations here on Feel This. They are the doorway into what makes our podcast “experiential.” And they are in your conversations, if you know what to look for. Understanding these modes gives us tools for deepening connection.

In this episode we share the five modes: Chit-Chat, It Chat, Me Chat, We Chat, and Now Chat. Within the podcast space, this will give you a foundation so you can listen to what’s happening beyond the level of content, as well as begin to notice these modes out in the world.

Having this fallible and impermanent body with history of trauma in a vulnerable, mundane moment is one of life’s everyday rollercoasters. Frank begins with a nuanced meditation on sound which transitions into a nuanced exploration of our current mental patterns and stories.

Today we look at creating safe containment to be in direct relationship with our emotions. We’re looking specifically at anger, the compartmentalizing we do in childhood to keep ourselves safe, and how that cuts us off from our life’s energy and flow. We explore other options and ways of creating space for the “wild horses” within us.

Today’s meditation asks us to be with the experience of our feelings purely and separate from the thoughts that accompany them, a practice that few of us have been taught.

After Jess shares a project she’s excitedly working on, the discussion turns toward the intrinsically, or internally rewarding and the extrinsically, or externally rewarded things we do. If an intrinsically rewarding life is a more flowing and joyful life, then how do we approach those extrinsic tasks that inevitably move us toward more of what we want?

27 Part 2 Tapas… More than Just Small Bites

When Frank and Jess look to understand Frank’s personal growth trajectory, they return to Frank’s brain tumor experience. Jess brings in three yogic concepts, including tapas. Not easily translated from Sanskrit, tapas is often translated as fiery zeal, austerity, or intense discipline. With this inspiration, they look at the effect of Frank’s two and half year long near-death experience on his personal spiritual clarity. The three yogic concepts mentioned in this podcast are from the beginning of the second book of Patanjali’s sutras. Here’s a little bit more about them.

In Sanskrit sutra 2.1 reads: tapah svadhyaya isvara pranidhanani kriya yogah

Tapas is a verb meaning to heat, shine, purify, or be changed by fire.

Svadhyaya is a combination of self (sva) and study (adhyaya). Adhyaya refers specifically to studying portions or chapters or lessons and, combined with sva, could be interpreted as an encouragement to have an understanding of each and every chapter of our lives.

Isvara pranidhana is complete surrender (pranidhana) to the source of all things, the teacher of all teachers (Isvara)

The last two words, kriya yogah, refer to Kriya Yoga, the Yoga of Action. Recorded 9/13/22 New to Feel This? We're so happy you're here! Is there a difference between observation and presence? How does choice work and serve our nervous systems? We explore these questions and a practice Frank has developed to help find completion within when those relational hiccups come along that, for whatever reason, we can't share with the other person. It’s an empathetic, almost telepathic communication. Today begins with an 8 minute meditation moving our presence from our head down to our gut and looking at our relationships from that place within. Recorded on 5/17/22 Your Feedback is Welcome! Today we explore the possibilities of this virtuous cycle:  At times when we’re feeling more ourselves and connected to our inner Yes and our inner knowing —-> We feel more fully responsible for ourselves and our lives -—> Which allows us to set clearer, healthier boundaries -—> Which leads to feeling even more fully ourselves —-> And so it goes! This episode begins with an 8 minute settling in, connecting to yourself and others.  (Tip from Jess: If possible, try listening to the meditation through headphones or earbuds to create a more immersive experience!) Today’s revelation is in seeing more clearly the relationship between the internal Drama Triangle our parts get hooked by and how that can stir up Drama Triangle energy with others. Can we avoid getting hooked into our own persecutor/victim/rescuer mentality while still looking to connect? Does it help to move toward or away from the pain in ourselves and each other? We also spend time looking at our window of tolerance, Somatic Experiencing, and co-regulation.

This episode begins with a six minute sense meditation including tuning into the quality of experience we want to have.

What does it mean to be a multidimensional, experiential storyteller? How do our stories become static or frozen? Frank shares what Leonardo DaVinci’s curiosity did for him during his brain tumor experience and Jess knows that what feels like play points toward healing and sometimes the particularity of what each of us is here to do. Along the way there are little explorations of Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Experiencing, and Synesthesia. All this after a five minute meditation.

In this episode we share the five modes, Chit-Chat, It Chat, Me Chat, We Chat, and Now Chat, and give you a foundation so you can listen to what’s happening beyond the level of content in our podcast, as well as begin to notice these modes during your own communications.
