Ep. 81 In this episode, Kelly Marie dives into the possibility of being misdiagnosed, AGAIN! Does she actually live with borderline personality disorder or is she autistic? Maybe there's another diagnosis that is a better fit, like complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD).

The goal of this episode is to help you understand your own misdiagnosis and to give yourself grace and the ability to accept you for where you are regardless of what box you may or may not check.

Living with a mental health illness or condition isn't an easy journey. Kelly Marie has lived with several mental health diagnoses and has made it her mission to live a life that shares her journey with the world.

Originally diagnosed with postpartum depression, then bipolar disorder, Kelly was finally diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) in addition to depression and generalized anxiety.

Recently, Kelly Marie has begun to question whether or not her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder is accurate after the algorithm coughed up this article on the misdiagnosis of a woman living with autism and not BPD.

Ep. 80 I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes while in the hospital recovering from her back surgery. I remembered the promise I made to myself in 2013 when in the same hospital recovering from a suicide attempt: “I’m going to do whatever I need to not to be here again”. I began to wonder:

  1. How does being diabetic affect day-to-day life?
  2. How does my sugar addiction impact my body’s ability to heal?
  3. Will my family & friends understand my health needs and support my choices?

In this episode of the Healthy Illness podcast, I, Kelly Marie will cover:

  1. What is diabetes?
  2. How is it managed?
  3. What is Ozempic and is it best for me?
  4. How can I advocate for myself with my doctors and loved ones on my healing journey?

Ep. 79 As a society, we are often influenced to do things a certain way because of tradition, social media and even depictions on television. But have you ever stopped to think of who is actually behind those motivations and is there a better way for YOU to accomplish the same goals? For example, does your cleaning and cooking rituals make the food taste better or the housework easier? Or do you simply listen to music while cleaning up on a Saturday morning because it’s what your mom always did?

Who says you have to do it in any particular way?

In this episode of the Healthy Illness podcast, you will learn a new tool we’re calling the “Says Who?” tool. The “Says Who?” tool walks you through four questions to answer to evaluate if and how you're doing a thing is the best way for you.

  1. Who said I have to do it this way?
  2. Why am I doing it this way?
  3. How can I do this in a way that is best for me?
  4. Is this new way better or can I think of another way to do it?

You can use these four questions to examine the best ways to live life. This is all a journey and what works for you may not work for someone else. However, healthy illness host Kelly Marie, leads you through examining these four questions to determine the best way for you to do what's best for you.

Ep. 78 Join Coach Kelly Marie as she confronts her anxiety around the thought of taking her bike out for a ride for the first time in over a year. This powerful episode holds nothing back as she deals with the emotional and physical stress associated with her anxiety. Learn how to implement the tools and ask for the help you need.

My doctor cleared me to ride my bike after back surgery, but my anxiety has kept me from going on a ride around the block! I'm physically healthy enough to take a bike ride, but mentally I'm paralyzed. It's time to implement the tools. Step one is acknowledging the symptoms.

Anxiety, the body’s response to stress, is how your body alerts you to threats and helps you get ready to deal with them.

The autonomic nervous system produces your fight-or-flight response, which is designed to help you defend yourself or run away from danger. When you are under stress or anxious, this system kicks into action, and physical symptoms can appear — headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, shakiness, or stomach pain.

Ep. 77 Advocating for yourself is an important step in taking control of your well-being. It’s one of the tools in the self-care toolbox you can use. In this episode, Kelly Marie gives you her top 10 self-advocacy steps and discusses the ways she used many of them to help her manage her mobility issues, spinal surgery and recovery. Remember, advocating for your health is an ongoing process. Stay proactive, stay informed, and stay engaged in your own journey.

  1. Educate Yourself: Learn about your medical condition or concern. Understand the symptoms, treatments, and potential alternatives. Research reputable sources, consult medical professionals, and join support groups or online communities to gather information and insights.
  2. Clearly Communicate: When discussing your health with healthcare providers, be clear and concise about your symptoms, concerns, and questions. Describe your symptoms in detail, provide a comprehensive medical history, and express any worries or doubts you may have.
  3. Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions about your health condition, treatment options, potential side effects, and recovery process. Seek clarification if something is unclear. Asking questions helps you gain a better understanding of your situation and empowers you to make informed decisions. *Pro tip: Use your phone’s notetaking feature to jot down questions. You’ll always have them with you when you see your health professional.
  4. Build a Supportive Healthcare Team: Choose healthcare providers who listen to your concerns and respect your input. A supportive team includes doctors, nurses, specialists, and other professionals who collaborate with you to make decisions about your health. If you feel unheard or dismissed, consider seeking a second opinion.
  5. Keep Records: Maintain organized records of your medical history, including test results, diagnoses, treatments, and medications. This documentation will help you track your progress, communicate effectively with healthcare providers, and have a comprehensive overview of your health. *Pro tip: see #3
  6. Be Proactive: Take an active role in your healthcare. Stay informed about new research, treatments, or alternative therapies related to your condition. Advocate for preventative measures and screenings.
  7. Seek Second Opinions: If you receive a significant diagnosis or face a complex medical decision, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion. Another perspective can provide valuable insights and confirm the best course of action.
  8. Engage in Shared Decision-Making: Collaborate with your healthcare team in making decisions about your health. Share your preferences, values, and concerns, and work together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.
  9. Understand Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a patient. Research laws and regulations related to healthcare, privacy, and informed consent. Knowing your rights will help you advocate for yourself effectively.
  10. Utilize Support Networks: Connect with advocacy groups, patient organizations, and support networks related to your health condition. These groups can provide valuable resources, information, and emotional support during your healthcare journey.

Ep. 76 Learning to set and implement boundaries can be difficult for many people. It’s even more difficult with people you care about. Those closest to us know our strengths and weaknesses and may not believe the boundary you are setting is necessary causing stress to you and your relationship. However challenging, it is essential for your well-being.

During Kelly Marie’s recovery from spinal laminectomy and fusion, she had to assert herself and implement all of the tools she so regularly talks about. Not only did it not work, but she was concerned about the effects the process would have on her recovery journey. Wiping tears from her eyes, she dug deep, stood firm, prioritised her healing, and was able to establish the boundary and maintain her relationship.

Here are 6 steps you can take to set boundaries with those closest to you:

  1. Reflect on your why: Take time to identify your personal boundaries, what is important to you and why. Understand your limits, values, and needs. This self-awareness will provide a solid foundation for establishing and communicating your boundaries effectively.
  2. Be clear and firm: Clearly and assertively express your boundaries to the person. Use "I" statements to express how their behavior or actions impact you. Be direct, firm, and respectful of your relationship. Pro tip: Avoid apologizing or justifying the boundary.
  3. Be consistent: Consistency is key when setting boundaries. Make sure to reinforce your boundaries consistently over time. People may test or push your boundaries initially, but by consistently sticking to them, you send a clear message that your needs are non-negotiable.
  4. Seek support: It can be helpful to seek support from someone you trust. Discuss your challenges and strategies for setting boundaries. They can hold space for you, offer advice, and encourage you throughout the process.
  5. Seek professional help if needed: If you're finding it challenging to set boundaries or facing ongoing difficulties with someone not respecting your boundaries, consider seeking the help of a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance, support, and strategies for your specific situation.
  6. Practice self-care (this is really number 1 and the overall reason for setting boundaries in the first place): Prioritize self-care to maintain your well-being. Taking care of yourself strengthens your ability to establish and uphold boundaries. Engage in activities that recharge you, like setting aside time for self-reflection. Be kind to yourself and give you the grace you give others.

Remember that setting and maintaining boundaries is a process that takes time and practice. It's normal to encounter resistance or discomfort but prioritizing your well-being and advocating for your boundaries is an important part of self-care. Stay committed to yourself and your boundaries and surround yourself with people who respect and value your limits.

Ep. 75 Grab life by the cane. In this episode I shared my journey from having "heavy legs" and trouble walking up stairs to being recommended for emergency spinal laminectomy and fusion surgery. Initially, I was told that the surgery would be quick and not invasive. However, it turned out to be more complicated than expected, not to mention all of the paperwork with insurance and medical jargon. (whew)

Through my experience, I learned the importance of self-advocacy, patience, and support. I share this story so that you may benefit from my experience and learn how to advocate for yourself before and post-surgery.

  • Learn the benefits of spinal laminectomy and fusion surgery.
  • Be ready for pre-operation and post-operation procedures and timelines.
  • Understand the insurance negotiations associated with challenging medical procedures.
  • Identify the significance of self-care, establishing boundaries, and asking for help.
  • Investigate mental health challenges such as depression that can come along with temporary disability.

Ep. 73 How do we get rid of the mean girl persona? How do we become better people in the workplace and amongst our friends and family? How do we become unified as human beings living this life? We start with self-care.

Mean Girls exist because there are issues that need to be addressed within each and every one of us. Everyone has issues. And so these types of mean girl dynamics exist because we have not addressed our issues.

One of the things many of us have not addressed is the roles that people have in our lives. We are sometimes surrounded by people that shouldn't be in our sphere or if they are supposed to be there, we put them in the wrong place which causes us to be out of alignment. So self-care can look like putting people in the right place. Self-care can look like removing people from ours sphere of influence. It is understanding where someone should be and what place they should occupy in your life.

Ep. 72 Journaling is a powerful tool and can be really effective in assisting you with your mental health. It’s a popular tool used in DBT for emotional regulation. In this episode Coach Kelly Marie shares seven simple steps to help get your thoughts out of your head and onto the paper.

Whether you keep a daily journal or simply jot down notes to yourself when ideas come, this technique can have a powerful impact on your journey to better relationships with yourself & others.

  1. Write quickly and passionately. Let the ideas flow onto the paper without dwelling on one thing for too long. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling. The goal is to get the words out!
  2. Write consistently. You may not be an everyday writer, but having a routine to keep your journal flowing is a great strategy. When you write on a daily or weekly basis, you'll find a greater consistency to your thoughts and reflections. It can also be used to track any cycles or patterns of thought or actions in your life.
  3. Set goals and reflect on them. Outline your most important self-improvement goals when you begin your journaling experience. Reflect on them often to determine whether or not you're taking active steps toward achieving them.
  4. Be honest. You’re talking to you! You can be completely honest in your journal because no one else will read it but you.

If having a written journal scares you or if you are unsure if your thoughts will remain private, you can write and release! Write down your thoughts and rip up the page after you’re done. You can also try and take a picture of your journal entry and store it in a secure folder on your phone or in the cloud.

  1. Ask yourself tough questions. This is all about you building healthier relationships. Easy questions are easy to answer. Asking yourself the tough questions can aid significantly in the reflection process.
  2. Refer back to your past entries. When you have a bad day, look at your positive writing to ease your thoughts. When you feel lost or unsure about yourself, look back over your goals and insights to find guidance.
  3. Choose a journal that's right for you. Select a journal that resonates within you, something that you feel comfortable and confident writing in. You can purchase a journal from a bookstore, create your own, use an app or simply collect loose pages in a binder. The right journal for you will inspire you to use it.

Ep. 71 See DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy in action! DBT is a therapy used to treat people with Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. DBT helps to reprogram your brain by focusing on today and making better decisions based on the information at hand. It also helps with emotional regulation, which is something I have been working on.

DBT can be used at any point to help me practice mindfulness, manage my emotions and respond to a situation. It is not just one thing. It's a method of processing information and developing tools that work best for me.

To help with this, I have been using a workbook that helps me unpack events that provoke a strong emotional response. The worksheets help me identify the why's of my feelings without judgement allowing me a safe place to develop healthier reactions.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

  1. The importance of having a guide to assist with understanding emotional regulation.
  2. What "tools" look like and how to implement DBT techniques.
  3. Learn first-hand how I use DBT when I have an overwhelming emotional reaction during the podcast.

Ep. 70 Discover the power of emotional regulation to build better relationships with yourself and others with DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

DBT is a therapy used to treat people with Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. DBT helps to reprogram your brain by focusing on today and making better decisions based on the information at hand. It also helps with emotional regulation, which is something I have been working on.

"Giving yourself that time to pause, to do that mental work, may take time to get to that place. Many folks are quick to respond, quick to have that instantaneous reaction in that 5 seconds to pause. Pausing saves lives and relationships, and we're all about building better relationships."

To help with this, I have been using a workbook that helps to break down emotions into different buckets, and to identify the emotions associated with traumatic events or with life in general. It helps me to pause and think before reacting, and it gives me a way to process the emotions I'm feeling.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

  1. What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy and how can it help with mental health conditions?
  2. How can understanding emotions help reprogram the brain and build better relationships with yourself?
  3. What is the process of emotional regulation and how can it help with trauma recovery?

Pausing saves lives, straight up and relationships, and we're all about building better relationships." To help with this, I have been using a workbook that helps to break down emotions into different buckets, and to identify the emotions associated with traumatic events or with life in general. It helps me to pause and think before reacting, and it gives me a way to process the emotions I'm feeling. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy and how can it help with mental health conditions?2. How can understanding emotions help reprogram the brain and build better relationships with yourself?3. What is the process of emotional regulation and how can it help with trauma recovery? Credits

Ep. 69 What's the difference between a mental health condition and a mental illness? A mental health illness has to be diagnosed by a licensed mental health professional or other medical professional. A person cannot diagnose themselves with a mental illness. However, a mental health condition is really any moment in time that someone is dealing with the effects of lower mental health status.

One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. This includes things like grief, bouts of sadness. Examples of mental health illnesses that I personally have been diagnosed with include major depression and bipolar disorder. The great thing is that healing is possible and anyone can begin their recovery journey when they're ready.

Ep. 68 Struggling with clinical depression, a resilient Black woman strives to be seen and heard in a world that demands she be "stronger than everyone else," uncovering research that reveals how Black women experience depression differently than White women. "Healing is possible, recovery is possible, and you can live a full, complete and healthy life while also managing living with mental health conditions."As a black woman living with depression, I was intrigued when I came across an article about the signs of depression in black women. After reading the research done at NYU and Columbia, I could relate to the symptoms of self-hatred, self-blame, and the inability to experience pleasure. This research opened my eyes to the fact that there is a medical mistrust among black and brown communities and that this mistrust can contribute to people not seeking help for mental health conditions. I'm now committed to creating safer and more forgiving environments in my family and community to help those in need seek the help they deserve. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. How the signs and symptoms of depression manifest differently in Black women. 2. Why people of color often do not seek mental health or medical treatment. 3. What we can do to foster more healing communities, rooted in addressing the effects of racism?

Ep. 63 What does it feel like to live with Borderline Personality Disorder? Right now, Kelly Marie is dealing with a depressive episode and during these times she finds that her BPD is "closer to the surface" now than when she doesn't have an overlapping depressive episode. She's been implementing the tools that she knows helps her to manage her mental health conditions and one of those ways is through journaling.

JOURNAL ENTRY 11/27/22:

When I feel this way, I feel raw. Like someone has peeled away the layers of my skin, one layer at a time they expose me and my feelings to the world. I feel tingly. Not in a good way but in a scrubbed hard with a bristle brush way. I'm only guessing because I've never been scrubbed hard with a bristle brush. What am I supposed to do? I just want to lay in the bed and cry. I feel like everything that I say is wrong. I'm sharing too much or not enough. I can't find the right words. The struggle for basic words that I know I know but they just don't come to me. I can't figure out how to put thoughts together and connect them to sentences and words in order to explain what I'm thinking. It's taking everything I have, okay not everything, but I am really struggling with managing my emotions right now. And I don't know what to do. I'm implementing the tools. I'm writing down my feelings. And journaling. If this counts as journaling. Actually, I know it counts as journaling. But I'm just raw. I feel naked.

Ep 62 Habits, whether good or bad, are created over time. That means it takes time to break those habits and create behaviors that are more beneficial to living a health life. Rose Ann Forte's book “The Plans He Has For Me” was designed to help you do just that.

Join Kelly Marie and Rose Ann as they discuss unhealthy habits including drinking alcohol and eating processed sugar and how to use the 12-week devotional to break free and live your life according to God's plan.

Download the free Kickstart Method for Alcohol Freedom www.theplanshehasforme.com “This journey is a journey of practice and rewiring the beautiful mind God created for each of us. He created a mind that saves us energy and remembers routine behaviors, so we don’t need to re-teach them to ourselves each time we do them. Think about how we can drive to and from work and not remember how we even got there and back to our driveway. Think about the routine you do before you go to bed at night. There isn’t much thought put into these things because it’s the perfect energy-saving mechanism designed by our Creator.” - Rose Ann Forte

ABOUT THE GUEST:

Rose Ann was a successful C-Suite executive and ministry leader in the church. She was a working mom of four and a social drinker. Over the years, life’s stresses and a difficult marriage created an environment where her alcohol usage increased significantly. After the collapse of her marriage, her drinking further escalated and she felt like a fraud with God and the Church. AA was not an option in her mind. She had already submitted to God and didn’t want to call herself an alcoholic. When COVID-19 hit, she enrolled in a coaching program to put alcohol to the side for three months. Her experience was extremely transformational, and she recognized God’s instruction embedded in the entire process. She became free of the psychological slavery of this habit through this process. She identified what alcohol had stolen from her life and understood that God had a better plan for her. Rose Ann felt called to document what she learned with a daily devotional so others can experience God’s promises through scriptural instruction with hope and a better plan for the future.

Ep. 60 There was mold in the dishes, and I kept ripping off my clothes. That's when I knew something was wrong!

Coach Kelly Marie is back and getting real about her mental health journey--the good, the bad, and the ugly -- in order to help others who may be going through similar experiences. Join us on this journey of assessing the warning signs of an oncoming depressive episode and exacerbated Borderline Personality Disorder symptoms.

Kelly uses checklists to monitor her mood and behavior to be able to detect a depressive episode and things weren’t looking too good. After a recent therapy appointment she had the motivation to finally wash her dirty dishes. They had been sitting in the sink so long when she opened them they were moldy!

The next day she got dressed for work and her clothes did look right. She tried on something else and that outfit didn’t quite look right either. She gave it another go and found something else to wear. She looked in the mirror and couldn’t understand why her clothes were betraying her. Frustrated and on the verge of tears, she sat on the side of the bed and realized what was happening. Whenever she is unable to find clothes that “fit” or “look right” after multiple tries, she knows it’s a sign she may be struggling with her mental health.

Join her on this episode as she navigates her disorders and continues to drive in the front seat!

Ep 58 If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts or know someone who is, this episode is for you. Dr. Celia Spacone & Coach Kelly Marie go through The FACT Framework for Suicide Prevention so that you can get the help and support you need. You will also learn:

  1. The importance of talking about suicide openly and without stigma in order to get help

  2. The warning signs of suicide, which may be different from risk factors

  3. How to have a conversation with someone you think may be suicidal, including what to say and what not to say

Here's a breakdown of what is covered: [00:00:01] - September is Suicide Awareness Month

[00:01:14] - Why Dr Celia Spacone came out of retirement.

[00:05:30] - Myth about talking about suicide.

[00:20:07] - Using the right words to talk about suicide.

[00:23:58] - Keeping your home suicide safer

[00:28:09] - How long does it take from decision to act on suicide?

[00:29:42] - Remembering the F.A.C.T.S. and warning signs of suicide.

FEELINGS: Is the person sad, lonely, hopeless, in pain, irritable or increasingly depressed?

ACTIONS: Are they pushing away from friends and family, giving away important possessions, abusing drugs or alcohol, or making or researching suicide plans?

CHANGES: Have there been changes in performance, appearance or hygiene, or personality or attitude, or does the person not seem like they normally do?

THREATS: Have they directly said they are going to kill themselves or indirectly talked about dying? Do they say things like, “I wish I could go to sleep and never wake up”; “I don’t want to do this anymore”; or “I’m tired of everything”?

SITUATIONS: Has a crisis or situation occurred recently that was a loss or public embarrassment for them?

Celia Spacone, PhD is a retired executive director of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center and coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County.

Dr. Spacone encourages us to have open conversations about suicide with or without fear. She tells us that it’s ok to use the word “suicide” and that you won’t encourage someone to take their life by having the conversation. Quite the opposite, you are letting the person know you care and are willing and open to have a tough conversation about suicide.

Episode 57 Coach Kelly Marie sits down with her pastor to discuss suicide and mental health from a faith perspective; exploring what the Bible has to say about suicide, and whether or not those who attempt suicide go to heaven.

In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. The act of suicide and its consequences 2. Religion and suicide

  1. The grace of God

It is a difficult thing to lose somebody to suicide. The act itself is a consequence of sin, but that doesn't mean that God has forsaken those who have attempted or succeeded in taking their own lives.

Apostle Dr. Garney Davis, Jr. reminds us that God is an ever-present help, even in our darkest moments. He also reminds us that it is not our place to judge those who have attempted suicide or taken their own lives.

Only God knows what happened in their final moments and only God can judge their eternal destiny.

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8

Episode 56 Kelly Marie must choose between her mental health and physical health on the anniversary of her suicide attempt.

In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What happens when physical and mental health collide?

  1. Is mental health a journey or a destination?

  2. How to ask for help, even when you don't want to.

Welcome to Season 5 of Living the Front Seat Life Podcast! September is Suicide Awareness Month and we will spend some time talking about suicide, learning the warning signs and how to navigate your mental health in crisis.

"It's a journey. It's living a front seat life." - Kelly Marie

I was on vacation in Ocean City, Maryland, when I hurt myself. I was determined to enjoy myself, despite the pain. When I got back, I had a busy work schedule and I was focused on that. I didn't have time to think about the fact that September 3rd was the anniversary of my suicide attempt. On September 2nd, I fell down my stairs and was in a lot of pain. I contemplated going to the hospital, but didn't want to end up in the same room I woke up in nine years earlier. I decided to wait and see my doctor. I was glad I did, because I was able to avoid going to that hospital. This experience was a reminder that I am still on my mental health journey and that I have to take care of myself.

Episode 54 When a community experiences a crisis such as a mass shooting, hurricane or terrorism, well-intentioned “outsiders” often come in and try to help. But as our guest Rev. Dr. Willard Ashley, Sr. points out, it’s important to learn the language and understand the culture of the impacted community before attempting to meet its specific needs. In this episode, you’ll learn how psychotherapy can help a faith-based community heal from trauma.

Dr. Ashley did ground-breaking work helping clergy recognize and address their own emotional trauma and distress as first responders after 9/11. His interfaith program ' Care for the Caregivers' has become a model, and Will an expert, in how to shape religious communities' role in disaster relief around the world.

Psychotherapy looks deep inside of your emotions, your psyche and your spirituality.

Cognitive behavior therapy and psychoanalysis can help you find resistances that cause the inner conflict that pushes you to behave in a manner that contradicts your true values.

This episode of Living the Front Seat Life Podcast is sponsored by BIPOC PEEEEEEK Breaking the Stigma & Silence and Prioritizing Needs. BIPOC PEEEEEEK is hosting the Mental Health in Communities of Color conference on July 13th, 14th and 16th in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse NY respectively. The goal is to engage in dialogue to highlight the diversity of needs for both youth and adults across systems and collectively work together to identify strategies to improve care for children and families from diverse backgrounds. The Buffalo event date of July 14th happens to fall on the 60 day mark of the Tops Market massacre and organizers will discuss strategies for long-term plans to address trauma and system level changes.

Episode 48

Coach Kelly Marie raises awareness of child abuse in this episode by providing ways to have a conversation with your child about body safety and warning signs of child abuse.

Always take children’s talk of being abused seriously. Call 911 or child protective services immediately!

If you have questions or are unsure what to do, call the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD.

5 RULES TO TEACH YOUR CHILD ABOUT BODY SAFETY

  1. Tell your child “You are the boss of your body. If someone touches you in a way that makes you uncomfortable, say NO, get away, and tell me.”
  2. Teach your child the proper names for their body parts.
  3. Explain that private parts are those that are covered by bathing suits and that they should stay covered. Say “it’s not OK for others to look at or touch your private parts unless that person is your doctor or me.”
  4. Let your child know that no one should ask him/her to keep a secret and that it’s never OK to keep secrets from you, especially if your child is scared or uncomfortable.
  5. Tell your child to “speak up” if someone is making them feel anxious or uncomfortable.

Know the warning signs of child abuse:

  • Unexplained or suspicious bruises, welts,
  • burns, or fractures
  • Unkempt or malnourished appearance
  • Depression, anxiety, or sudden mood swings
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Abrupt changes in behavior (eating habits, school performance, withdrawal, aggression)
  • Fear of a certain person or place
  • Self-harm or suicide attempts
  • Wetting or soiling accidents not related to toilet training
  • Pain during urination and/or bowel movements
  • Sexually transmitted diseases or urinary tract infection
  • Discoloration or scarring of genital area
  • Unusual knowledge of body parts or sex
  • Acting out sexually with toys or other children

Declutter your mental and physical space and start focusing on things that bring value to your life.

In this episode the Declutter Empress Daria Murphy joins Coach Kelly Marie to share her process of deciding what to keep and what has to go.

If the thought of giving away something of sentimental value gives you anxiety, try this simple trick to keeping precious moments while creating your Oasis Space.

Did you know?

The word Worry is rooted in the Old English word for 'strangle'.

Erma Bombeck told us “Worry is like a rocking chair: it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere.” Instead, spend your energy on things within your control.

Episode 41 Coach Kelly Marie shares her story of living with Suicidal Ideation as a Symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder.

Suicidal ideation — thoughts or feelings about suicide or self-harm — can range from simply considering it to creating a plan. Not everyone who experiences suicidal ideation is suicidal. In this episode you’ll learn how to control your reactions to your thoughts and how to get help.

There are two types of suicidal ideation:

  • passive: a person has specific thoughts of suicide, of “not wanting to be alive,” or “not wanting to wake up in the morning” but doesn’t intend or plan to commit the action
  • active: a person not only thinks about suicide but intends to commit the action and plans how to do it

During extreme stress or when facing mental health challenges, some people might feel there’s only one way to find relief: self-harm or suicide. You might regularly think about suicide or contemplate what life would be like without you around. Understanding these feelings and thoughts can help you ease them if you or someone you know is experiencing them. It is okay to ask for help. You are not alone.
