Long time no see! Welcome back to episode 30, where we talk about the LGBTQ+ community and the Healthcare System. Today we have the pleasure of conversing with Deborah Dunn, PAC, MBA who is a family practice physician assistant and the Trans Health Coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center for Chase Brexton Health Care. In addition to graduating from Howard University’s physician assistant program in 1983, she holds an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. Tune in to hear more!
At Chase Brexton, Deborah Dunn provides leadership and coordination of care for transgender-identified patients, establishes best practices for medical transgender care, trains other medical providers, provides consultation to external organizations on transgender-related issues including employee transition, engages in advocacy at the state level, and identifies research and funding opportunities related to transgender care. She also was part of the team that wrote Gender: Joy (Journey of Youth), a multidisciplinary program written for trans/gender diverse youth, adolescents, and families. She has spoken at several National Conferences and writes numerous guidelines for the treatment of transgender children and adults. She serves on the Maryland Board of Physicians, Physician Assistant Advisory, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants LGBT Caucus.

Hello, we are finally back from our temporary hiatus! Starting off our November episodes is a feature on UNICEF. Today we'll be talking about their impact on COVID and its changes towards gender equity, and what that looks like. Joining us today is Rowena Pinto, the Chief Program Officer with UNICEF Canada. Rowena Pinto primarily works on gender equity issues, notably the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on women & girls. She has played a significant role in the passing of key legislation that has supported healthier Canadians as well as vulnerable populations. Rowena also served as Ontario’s Chief Reputation Officer for several years. You can read more about her in her previous Globe & Mail feature. and more recently on the career blog Be the Next Her. In addition to all of this, she has a son and twin daughters and has been working from home juggling virtual schooling.

Starting off our October episodes is episode 28, all about the white savior complex! Joining us today is Earl Fowlkes Jr., who currently the serves as the President/CEO of the Center for Black Equity, Inc. (formerly the International Federation of Black Pride -IFBP). He founded the IFBP in 1999 ago as a coalition of organizers in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and South Africa formed to promote a multinational network of Black LGBTQ Pride and community-based organizations. Earl Fowlkes currently serves on the Washington DC Police Complaints Board, Damien Ministries Board of Directors and several other organization boards. He previously served two terms as the Chair of the DC Commission on Human Rights. the Chair of DC Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Committee, Community Co-Chair of the DC HIV Prevention Community Planning Group and a member of the DC Commission on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Earl is very much committed to a progressive political agenda for the Black and LGBTQ communities, and currently serves as the Democratic National Committee (DNC) LGBT Caucus Chair and on the DNC Executive Committee. He has received numerous honors and awards for his community service and, was named one of three 2013 Grand Marshals of the Heritage of Pride (NYC Gay Pride) along with Harry Belafonte and Edith Windsor.

It's a new week, and this week happens to star our last September episode. Joining us today is Dr. Gordon, who is currently the Division Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Florida. She is board certified in pediatrics, adolescent medicine and obesity medicine. Dr. Gordon received her doctorate of pharmacy from Florida A&M University and her doctor of medicine from Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida. She completed her pediatric residency at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and her fellowship in adolescent medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital Adolescent Health Center. Her professional interests include positive youth engagement, risk reduction, reproductive justice and adolescent obesity.

Jaya Bhumitra (she/her) holds 20 years of campaign experience in both the private and nonprofit sectors, including a decade in the farmed animal protection movement where she led international efforts to ban cages cruelly confining hens used for eggs and improve the horrific conditions for chickens raised and killed for meat. Cumulatively, her work has contributed to reducing the suffering of 760 million chickens every single year.

Nina Zhuang currently operates as the marketing director at Spark Initiative and is also a graphic designer for numerous other organizations. Through such involvement, she explores her passions, hones skills, and learns more about herself and society. Her primary passion is the social sciences, but she is also interested in the arts, humanities, law, and social justice through an intersectional lens. She is a firm believer that education and knowledge are important tools in approaching true justice, choosing to read and research and passing it on to others. Saskia is a rising senior at Our Lady Queen of the World Catholic Academy. Over the last two years, she has had the pleasure of being a part of several Non Profit organizations as a Marketing Director for PTC Waterloo, a Climate Action Ambassador for Youth Challenge International's volunteering programs and the Chief Operations Officer at Justice for Society! Growing up as an Indonesian-Canadian with very little diversity representation in the Entertainment and Arts Industry, Saskia strives to become the representation that other minorities can look up to with pride. She plans on pursuing a career in digital media for the Entertainment Industry in her post-secondary education.

Michelle is a seventeen-year-old student attending Unionville High School’s music program for piano. Having a passion for social change and world issues, they partake in many nonprofit organizations, including starting a community chapter of MEDLIFE, being a director on Project 5K, a youth volunteering organization, and volunteering for Education For All. Over the past few years, Michelle has developed an interest in political theory ranging from queer theory, to disability theory, to questions of race and identity. Beyond high school, Michelle would like to obtain a degree in Political Science and hopefully pursue research in the social sciences and humanities. You can find them participating in mock trials, doing puzzles, hiking, hanging out with their cat, Pablo, or at the farmers market in their free time.

Guadalupe “Lupe” M. Rodríguez is a scientist with an activist heart dedicated to seeing all people live in salud, dignidad y justicia. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice (Latina Institute). Born in Mexico City, Lupe immigrated with her family to San Jose, California, seeking medical care for her brother. A natural-born leader, she knew early on that she had a passion for organizing and was gifted with a strong voice and desire to speak up for what was right. With a strong proclivity for science and driven to work on health issues like the congenital disorder that impacted her brother, Lupe studied Neurobiology at Harvard University. During the first year of her graduate program, she changed course from a career as a scientist to focus on social justice. She went on to conduct research in Mexico, followed by social justice policy work in Peru and in her home state of California. A self-proclaimed disruptor, Lupe continued her work in policy, becoming the Program and Policy Director at ACCESS Women's Health Justice, leading strategic development, operations, and the expansion of the organization’s programs. Before joining Latina Institute, Lupe served as the Director of Public Affairs, and later the Vice President of Public Affairs, at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM). The largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the country, PPMM provides medical and education services to more than 220,000 people annually at over 30 health centers in mid-California and northern Nevada. Lupe graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Neurobiology. She serves on the Community Advisory Board for the Center for Clinical Research at Stanford Medical School and has served on several boards, including Center for American Progress’ Reproductive Justice Advisory Board, California Family Health Council Board of Directors, as Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women in Santa Clara County, Treasurer of the Board of Directors for California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, and Chair of the Board of Directors for ACCESS Women’s Health Justice. She is an avid runner and resides in the Bay Area with her partner.

They intend on pursuing business and/or law in the future, but is also passionate about expression through creative arts: from music, fashion, to makeup. Hina Sabatine is a non-binary, lesbian content creator best known for language related TikToks and LGBT content. They started their online presence in August of 202 and by June 2021, have garnered a following of over 500k. Japan-born and Hawaii raised, Sabatine has moved all over the world since childhood. As an adult, they moved around Europe pursuing higher education earning à culinary degree as well as studying art history and psychology.

Diversify Our Narrative is a student-led nonprofit that fights for racial justice through anti-racist curricula. Our mission is to fight to be anti-racist and encourage a productive dialogue on race and identity among our student bodies through the inclusion of racially diverse, anti-racist texts in USA Schools; to work towards racial justice, educational equity, and community power.

Next up this month is the rising topic of Social Media Algorithms! Guesting this week is The A system.
The A System, recently surfacing on the social media platform TikTok, is a Dissociative Identity Disorder System of 29 alters. This includes Chris, the host and 28 others. They took to TikTok only a few months ago to share their story with the world and continue to help break the stigmas surrounding DID. Several alters have very large roles in the life that they all share. Asher, the self-proclaimed “best alter”, is an emotional protector in the system. He currently manages the social media accounts for The A System, along with Chris’s wife, Sam. Between the system and their spouse (though she married Chris, the system recognizes her as the spouse of the body) they have over 2mil followers on TikTok. A little over a month ago they decided to branch out to YouTube and have quickly gathered a subscriber base of over 30k. As they continue with their collective mission to educate others about DID and break the stigmas surrounding it, they also look to expand their platform to include Twitch in the near future.

Georgie Williams is a professional gender and sexuality consultant and a graduate of the MSc Gender programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science. They specialise in Transgender, Genderqueer, Nonbinary and Intersex research and education and founded the /Queer project in 2018- a global platform for gender and sexuality research and resources. /Queer is also a Kinsey Institute archived podcast used in university curricula both in the United Kingdom and United States of America. Georgie lectures and researches from their standpoint as a nonbinary transgender individual. Welcome back to JFS In Conversation! This week, we're continuing our talks of Queer social justice with Greg Thompson from the podcast Out Loud, joining us to talk about the interconnection between the Queer community and the church.
Greg Thompson loves using storytelling to open up conversations, particularly in the LGBTQIA+ community. After years of video and audio editing for faith organizations, Greg pursued his Master of Theological Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. There, he researched storytelling techniques for honoring LGBTQIA+ spirituality and fostering more deeply connected communities. He has since turned his attention toward the queer community with his podcast, "Out Loud: LGBT Stories of Faith," which launched in 2018. Each season, guests share their experiences with religion, whether they continue to attend church or not. The show's sign-off, "Queer people have faith lives, too," has become a somewhat of a mantra, in the hopes that all people can see the divine in one another.

Maureen O’Shaughnessy, EdD, is a career school innovator with over 30 years of transforming learning in schools to better serve all students. As the founding director of Leadership Preparatory Academy (2013), a nonprofit, innovative, human-centered micro-school in Washington State, she uses her master’s degree in educational administration, her doctorate degree in educational leadership, and her extensive understanding of the components needed to transform the education system to lead the the school with pride! Dr. O’Shaughnessy is the author of Creating Micro-Schools for Colorful Mismatched Kids: A Step-by-Step Process that Empowers Frustrated Parents to Innovate Education and the founder of the Micro-School Coalition to support small pockets of educational transformation. Maureen served as head of school and principal internationally in countries such as Kuwait, Hungary, and Ecuador. Weaving in a strong emphasis on service and leadership at each school, she has been an educational change agent across the globe. And now as founder of the Education Evolution podcast, she aims to disrupt the education climate as we know it to help ensure each child is seen, heard and valued and met where they are academically, socially and emotionally. Tchadas Leo grew up in the Homalco Reserve in Campbell River, Vancouver Island. Between 2010 and 2008, Tchadas received numerous scholarships and awards to pursue his filming/broadcasting career including the SABAR Strategic Alliance of Broadcasters, the 2009 Victoria Foundation, the 2009 Irving K Baker BC Scholarship Society, the 2009-2010 National Achievement Post-Secondary Education Award and the 2008 Winner, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts’ BC 150 Youth Video Contest: “What BC Means to Me”. Most recently, in 2020, Tchadas signed a contract by with Check TV, to produce a series of podcast/TV interviews called “Our Native Land.” Tchadas has now been accepted in the BCIT Broadcasting and Journalism diploma and intends to graduate by May 2023. She is the co-founder and director of Bridges of Hope Project, an youth-led initiative prioritizing increased awareness of mental health and encouraging open conversations about well-being within communities. She has completed a Positive Psychology Specialization through the University of Pennsylvania and is currently completing a double major in Social Development and Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Waterloo. She has struggled personally with anxiety, OCD and depression for the majority of her life which sparked a passion in her for advocating for prioritizing mental wellness. She is a team member at The Activist Collab, a platform for young advocates to start their activism journey and a Community Ambassador at The Umbrella Project, a parenting and classroom strategy for communities to choose wellbeing. Olivia strives to continue to break stigma in her community and defy against the several systems that don't allow for well-being to be made a priority in our lives.Listen in to hear all about mental health during Covid and how it's incredibly prevalent!
