We spend the first years of our lives constantly learning, whether we're at school or at home. As we get older, it is just as important to unlearn — to truly discover and listen to your own individual voice that breaks free from what your parents have taught you, what school has taught you and what society expects from you.
This is Erika and Roxi and we invite you to join in on our conversations as we talk about unlearning from the context of an Asian upbringing.
Please rate and review if you enjoy it. Tell us what you've unlearned today.

In this episode, Roxi and Erika discuss how living in another place can change the way you think and feel - even the way you live.
Tune in to hear Roxi and Erika's experiences of realizing certain toxic patterns they learned to notice and outgrow after living in Europe. Like the normalization of grind and hustle culture - where working for longer hours seem to be the only path to achieve success. In contrast to how they live now (in Europe), where work-life balance is deeply entrenched into the culture.
Have you ever realize certain patterns in your life you unlearned and outgrew from? Let us know @unlearningwith us on IG and Tiktok!
In this episode, Roxi and Erika tackle the topic of dealing with the certain societal pressure of getting married and having babies.
In certain societies (like the Philippines for example), you are expected to marry and have kids at a certain age otherwise you would be considered a "leftover." To some extent, marrying & having babies have become the only options due to social norms.
Have you ever exeprienced this kind of societal pressure in your life? Let us know @unlearningwith us on IG and Tiktok!
In this episode, Erika talks about the benefits of waking up earlier (like getting more shit done) and how even people who hate mornings can become morning people.
Let’s get this out of the way: you’re not going to become a morning person just by waking up groggily at 6 am to a blaring alarm. Changes like this are beneficial, but sure as hell still need to be planned out for you to actually enjoy the change! Take it slowly with Erika’s steps!
Have you tried (and failed) to be a morning person or did you the extra time to be productive? Let us know @unlearningwithus on IG and Tiktok!
In this podcast, Roxi talks about how your upbringing and community affect the way you view yourself and your partner in future relationships (whether positive or negative).
How do you unlearn something you’ve experienced your entire life? How do you expect your partner to keep up with the million things you’re triggered by? Spoiler: you’re not supposed to expect them to!

In this episode, Roxi talks about the 2 specific steps she took to learn how to let go and how both those things took a lot of conscious effort.
Whether it’s about your body or your work or your relationship, refusing to let go of tiny details will have you obsessing over things that can never be perfect anyway.
What do you hyper-focus on even when you know you’ll feel better after letting it go? Let us know @Unlearningwithus on Tiktok and IG!
In this podcast, Erika and Roxi talk about how moving to a different country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be both exciting and not-very-glamorous (both due to culture shock).
It’s pretty hard having to pick up your life and head to a new country only to find out you can’t go to lunches with your co-workers because they plan things months in advance (no hard feelings).
What misconception did you have about a different culture and how did you find out you were wrong? Tell us your stories @Unlearningwith us on IG and Tiktok!
In this episode, Erika talks about Asian kids and boundaries that they’ve set (or, in most cases, never set) with their parents.
There’s always a lot of overstepping and “I know what’s better” which makes it difficult to have conversations, but how is this something you overcome? How do you get the older generation to unlearn what’s been passed down for years?
DM us something you’ve been struggling to tell your parents ;) @UnlearningWithUs on IG!
In this episode, Erika talks about how she felt confident across the years and how this feeling of confidence has changed.
Confidence comes in many forms; from accepting your body to seeing where you fit in with your peers. Most importantly, confidence comes over time and Erika talks about how, while there’s been so much growth, she still isn’t at 100% (but she’s getting there).
How do you work on your confidence? Has it changed in any way since you were a kid? Let us know @UnlearningWithUs on IG!
In this podcast, Roxi talks about how she manages taking care of both herself and her son while also balancing her husband and all her other priorities– all leading up to mom guilt.
How do you negotiate with a baby, with a kid that can barely talk let alone comprehend the balance that your life needs to have? Is mom guilt talked about enough? How do you balance what goes first when your husband, kid, yourself, and friends all deserve that spot?
If you’ve ever experienced feeling guilty about your decisions as a mom, let us know @unlearningwith us on Instagram!
Some of the common fears people tell us when they want to consider starting a business are: the fear of losing stable income, the fear of dealing with all of the government requirements, and the capital needed start. The biggest one though is always, “What if it doesn’t work?”
In this podcast, we talk about how we related to all of those fears (and still do) and how we built our business into something we think is very successful now. But also learning that businesses go wrong all the time and, if this is something you want to do, you just need to go for it!

In this episode, Erika talks about how she tried something new “later” on in her life and her expectations about learning to cycle (which proved to be wrong).
There’s always a reason to not learn to do something new– why learn to cycle when there’s public and private transport available everywhere or if you already have expectations about how difficult it’s going to be? Unless you try something, you’re never going to know if you love it, hate it, or even if it’s what you think it’s going to be.
Tell us about a new thing you learned to do later in life! How did it go? Tag us @unlearningwithus on IG!
In this episode, Erika talks about what living with your partner before marriage really entails– the good and the bad, but why it’s necessary for relationships to grow.
Getting married first before living your partner is expected in Asia, but it’s not that big of a deal in Europe. I mean, your aunt praying over you because you live with your partner shows that clearly.
There are a lot of reasons, though, to move in with someone: practicality, relationship progression, dynamic understanding.
What do you think about moving in with your partner before marriage? Is it still frowned upon? Let us know @unlearningwithus on Instagram!
In this episode, Roxi talks about the relationships she’s been in in the past and how they’ve contributed to her personal growth, despite how shtty they were in the moment. ”He was swiping on Bumble right next to me on the couch when we were watching Netflix” - ErikaEveryone should go through shtty relationships– at least we think people should. We tend to gravitate to what we think we deserve, but we (hopefully) come out of these relationships stronger and knowing what we actually deserve. Do you have a bad relationship story that tops ours? Tell us @unlearningwithus on Instagram!
In this episode, Roxi talks about her outlook on life, success, and the need to be results-driven. Because of a hard-hitting life event, Roxi was forced to look at what success means from a different perspective. Why does failure or the lack of getting a certain result break you down to the point where you feel like you’re nothing? Why is it so difficult to prioritize happiness as a goal?Have you ever had to prioritize happiness over success? Tell us your story at @UnlearningWithUs on Instagram!
In this episode, Roxi talks about cultural differences and societal expectations with casual dating and how they navigated these “relationships”.
Did you have an on or off switch where you realized that you’re done with the exhaustion of getting to know someone with purpose? Like Roxi, you might come to a realization that you’re sick of the whole “romancing” dating scene!
As a Filipino or someone in another culture, how does casual dating work? Do you agree with the dating rules set by your culture? Let us know @unlearningwithus on Instagram!
In this episode, Roxi and Erika talk about what it means to love your body and Roxi discusses her body issues before, during, and after her pregnancy.
It’s both interesting and important to think about the conversations you have with yourself about your body and why they’re either defined as positive or negative (although, let’s be honest, mostly negative). Loving and accepting your body will always be a work in progress, but the goal shouldn’t be weight it should be simply not caring.
How do you deal with body image issues? Tag us @unlearningwithus on Instagram if this podcast helped!
In this episode, Erika talks about how it felt bonding with an ex years after a breakup.

In this episode, Erika discusses what it was like being sober for three months, how she felt making the decision, and how it’s made her feel better!

How does one decide to be sober at 32 after having started drinking at 12-13 years old? Is it as easy to decline peers as you think it is?

In this episode, Roxi and Erika talk about the “mistakes” that single people make nowadays.
They discuss the boundaries they set when they were single, how they carried this into their relationships, and most importantly, how there should be no dating rules except to be yourself.

In this episode, Erika and Roxi talk about using dating apps to figure yourself out and setting the right expectations. Erika talks about her experience with using dating apps in the Philippines versus Europe.

What do you do when you are living a different life you thought you will have when you were younger? For me, not having kids is one of them. At 31, I have decided that I don't want any. Here's what my Filipino relatives think about it.
Are you the type of person who feels guilty and unaccomplished when you aren't productive?
Do you look at other people and think, "why are they so productive and I'm not" "maybe I need to get up super early too so that I can workout, meditate, be as accomplished as they are?"

We're excited to have Matthew Velasquez of the Grow Deep Podcast (@growdeeppodcast on Instagram)
Today, we'll speak about:
Moving to Berlin was extremely difficult. Three visa rejections, one ex-boyfriend and two failed jobs later, I finally feel somehow settled.
I was feeling unhappy and stuck in the Philippines, but 2 ½ years after moving to Berlin, I realize that it doesn't necessarily mean I'm happier here either.
In this episode I discuss:
Ayn Bernos shares content about self-awareness, growth and personal development. She is the living example of constantly trying to push boundaries. After the height requirement was scrapped at Ms. Universe Philippines, she decided to join the pageant as it’s always been her dream. She has over 3.5 million followers on TikTok on both her accounts @aynbernos and @aynperotagalog.Today we’ll learn about: the one thing she wishes Filipinos would stop doing, how she went from breaking off her wedding engagement at 22 to Ms. Universe candidate at 26, and how she deals with overthinking, anxiety and self-limiting beliefs
I admire Erika for a lot of reasons, but the most difficult thing that I've seen her go through was a break-up on her birthday completely alone, because her friends and family were all abroad.
We talk about finding hope in hopeless situations, the one insecurity that she still struggles with, becoming less of a people pleaser and more!
Let us know @unlearningwithus if this resonated with you!
Many Filipinos continue to live with their parents until they get married. It is really difficult to live on your own and save enough on a regular salary.

One thing I’ve always admired about Roxi -- She always had the incredible skill of being able to not only manage her emotions but also constantly self-reflect almost instantly. In this episode, she’ll share her techniques that anyone can follow, literally RIGHT NOW.
Here are Roxi's book recommendations that she mentions in the podcast:
I made a lot of decisions in my life that my parents weren't happy about.
I lived with my ex-boyfriend, drank and smoked, and got thirteen tattoos. Despite going against what they wanted, I believe that we have a great relationship.
In this episode, I talk about what I did to get them to accept decisions that they wouldn't be happy with.

Detaching yourself from your family’s expectations is a really tricky situation, especially in Asian culture.
In this episode, we speak about: why detachment from your family is not selfish and inconsiderate, how Asians attach too much of our worth to our achievements, and the questions you can ask yourself to figure out your purpose in life.
If this resonated with you, tag us @unlearningwithus. It helps us spread the message more :)
We all thought our parents had their shit together at 30.
Now that I'm 30, I know that I'm never gonna have everything figured out. I talk about how I FINALLY tried cooking, began to post on social media, and learned to love my body. I definitely still have a lot to learn, but I'm proud of how far I've come.
What are the lessons you've learned?
Being a female sex therapist in a country where sex is taboo? Not the easiest thing to do.
After decades of being taught that Filipinos should never talk about sex, couples (even married couples) struggle to communicate their sexual desires and needs. We speak about the most common issues that she hears about as a sex therapist, how that differs between men & women, how couples can maximize their sex lives, and how to start a conversation about sexual desires, especially when your partner may not be doing it right.

I sat down with Coach A (@riseup.coach.a) and had every intention of talking about fitness and nutrition tips. But the discussion went a lot deeper. His clients weren't struggling with the exercises or the diet, but they were mainly struggling with believing that they deserved a better body. He talks about centering your fitness journey on self-love, instead of obsessing about the goal.
We also spoke about his experience as a 'macho' man and how he began to unlearn that showing weakness was a bad thing. He spoke about how he confronted his infidelity issues and worked on accepting his flaws. He also believes that more men should strive for self-awareness and not be afraid to dig deep into the emotions and issues they may have.

I finally invited my husband Alessio to the show!
We talk about how we overcame our differences, jealousy, flirting, and finding other people attractive, and what we practice every day to keep the love alive. He also tells me the hardest thing to love about me (typical Roxi question haha).
He's THE most content and secure person I know, and I learned so much from him in terms of how to live a happier and calmer life.

Our European friends Chris, Alessio & Max share what it's really like to date a Filipina. Chris talks about the concept of how dating a Filipina meant dating her entire family (including aunts and uncles). Alessio talks about the differences in family dynamics and hierarchy. Max talks about the concept of "lambing," and how it was completely foreign to him.
On the other hand, Josel, Roxi, and Erika also talk about how dating a foreigner changed their perspective. Josel talks about how she thought dating a Westerner would never work. Roxi talks about how she used to think that jealousy was important in a relationship until she met guys who had zero jealousy. Erika speaks about how she believed that men should feel like they had more control and power in a relationship until she met guys who were no longer intimidated by her strength and independence.

Fighting is like a language. If you're fluent in the language, you'll have fewer chances of misunderstanding.
It's important to know the phrases and ways you can communicate to lessen the chances of escalating an argument. It's subtle, but effective differences.

I felt stuck and sad at home. It felt like something was missing. So at 28, I moved to Berlin with no job, no apartment, and no friends.
It was a rollercoaster of emotions -- I got fired, moved apartments five times in two years, met not-so-great people, and met amazing ones too.
Here are four lessons that I learned after moving abroad. If anything resonated with you, don't forget to tag us @unlearningwithus! We love hearing your thoughts :)
"I was so scared of eating one spoon of rice. I thought I'd gain weight from it."
I lost fifty pounds, but that didn't change the way I felt inside. I still struggled with loving my own body and had really low self-esteem. If I felt fat, I wouldn't leave the house. If I felt skinny, I'd go party and drink a lot of alcohol.
From there, I found three ways to begin loving my body. I hope this podcast resonates with people who are on a journey to love themselves and their bodies.

"It's kinda sad that my wife’s family is very accepting of me but my family isn't."
Many people from the LGBTQ+ community are lucky to be fully accepted and supported by their families. But that isn't the case for everyone. It's a work in progress for Krisna Norico, and she's here to let people know that that's okay too. Sometimes, it's a continuous and long journey.

Do you feel like you get into relationships with the wrong people?
Ella recently had an experience that I'm sure a lot of us can relate to. She fell for someone and felt like they had a really unique connection. He made her feel special and gave signs of an almost relationship but just couldn't commit. She wanted to give him a chance and understand where he was coming from, so she stuck around. After all, no one is perfect. Despite all the signs pointing to no, she decides to stay.
How do you know when it's time to let a relationship go or whether to stay?
How do you set your standards high and be with someone who is worth it? How do you enforce real and deep self-love?
Ella's here today to discuss all of this and more!

As part of our February love series, we have invited Vince Uy to discuss how he came out to his Chinese-Filipino parents, the controversy about having his and his boyfriends' hands blurred on a billboard because they were gay, as well as the contradictions in how accepting Filipinos are of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Vince Uy is a creative director at CoStudio. He is one of the most renowned creatives in the industry and has worked at Saatchi & Saatchi and Preview Magazine. He has been in a relationship with his partner Niño Gaddi for 10 years. He is also the brother of Liz and Laureen Uy.
With every serious relationship I've had, I always thought that I'd had found the one I was going to spend the rest of my life with.
After several break-ups, I was at a point in my life where I no longer wanted to waste time. I no longer wanted to be in a relationship that wasn't going to work out.
How is being with "the one" supposed to feel? What are you supposed to look for in "the one?" Here were the four questions I asked myself before deciding to get into a relationship with my now-husband.

As a country, we are obsessed with how our bodies and other people's bodies look. "Hello's" have been replaced with "tumaba ka," and no one talks about how rude it is.
We dread going to family reunions or meeting people we haven't seen in a long time. At the back of our minds, we worry that they'll comment on your weight either to your face or behind your back.
Together with Ida Paras, we discuss body shaming in the Philippines and how that may have affected our mentality about body image and weight growing up.
We also talk about the obsession people have with fitness and the journeys we've had to loving our bodies.
Ida Paras has been in the fitness industry for more than 6 years, and she's coached hundreds of women into loving their bodies through sustainable fitness. She's also the brains behind The Movement Studio, which offers group classes with the perfect blend of cardio and strength.
"My dad said that if I dated a Filipino, he would disown us."
Sounds extreme, but this happens way more often than you think.
Today we want to talk about Chinese families who don't allow their kids to date outside their race, and the "strategies" we used to overcome them and achieve what all Chinese kids want: parents who accept them.

In 2017, 8 out of 10 Filipinos are Catholics or about 100M Filipinos. Despite the influence of Catholicism in the Philippines, there is a clear contradiction between theory and practice. In 2012, the state passed a law requiring them to supply condoms and birth control pills, as well as provide sex education in schools. Duterte has vowed to expand the program. Hundreds of thousands of women have abortions each year. Many people also live together without getting married. Others in unhappy marriages deeply resent the Church for preventing divorce.
With Bro. Jan Silan, we’re here to go a little deeper on the contradictions that exist for a Filipino Catholic in the Philippines.
