What Was I Made For? - Jason Ballard | The Gospel According to Mark | (Mark 10:13-31) June 16, 2024
Some have called The Gospel According to Mark a passion narrative with a long introduction, acknowledging that Mark gives a disproportionate amount of time to the final week of Jesus’ life. This focus will allow us to emphasize the cross and the fact that Jesus came to seek and save the lost.
All in all, Mark acts as a very comprehensive discipleship manual that exalts the servant King, Jesus and invites us to follow him.

The Bright Morning Star
Darrell Johnson | Advent
December 24, 2023
At Christmas we meditate on the advent of Jesus Christ—God with us in the muck and mire of history.
We remind ourselves that God is at work in our world, His light pushing back the darkness, testifying to the coming dawn.
At Advent we anticipate that one day God will straighten out what sin has made crooked, healing the brokenness of our world, making all things new through Jesus.
This is a future we can trust.
Because, during Advent, we celebrate that God keeps all His promises in Jesus.

After setting the people of Israel free from bondage in Egypt, God spoke Ten Words to promote and protect the freedom of His people. Ten words that were crucial in forming Israel’s identity as a newly liberated nation, rescued from slavery in Egypt, breathing the fresh air of freedom for the first time. Today these Ten Words are famously known as the Ten Commandments. In a day of increasing moral ambiguity and uncertainty; in the midst of the cacophony of differing voices and differing visions of the good life, these Ten Words are an invitation into a life of true human flourishing. For those seeking right relationship with God and others. For those looking for guidance in a fractured and broken world. For those longing for moral clarity in all the confusion.God gives us these Ten Commandments. Ten Words endorsed by the Creator of all things. Ten Words that reflect His character to us. Ten Words designed by the Creator to bring freedom and life to His people.

The Psalms are the prayer book of Israel. These ancient prayers and poems invite us on a behind the scenes, no-holds-bar tour of human spirituality connected to the Creator of the Universe—the ups and downs, twists and turns, breathtaking beauties and soul crushing loses that a life lived in the presence of God involves—almost nothing is left out by the Psalter. But how do we read the Psalms for all they are worth?

More than any other New Testament book, the epistle to the Philippians radiates joy. Rooted in the person and work of Jesus, in the vibrant relationship the apostle Paul shared with the church in Philippi and in the stunning invitation given to every follower of Jesus to live as citizens of heaven, this joy is the most noticeable feature of the letter.

Christmas: A Clandestine Celebration (Matthew 2:13-23) | Advent 2022
Mark Glanville
Dec 18, 2022
Over the centuries, the prophets of Israel promised a coming saviour—a leader for Israel and a light to all the nations. A virgin with child as a sign of God’s presence, born in the town of Bethlehem. An infant who would bear the government upon His shoulders and be called wonderful counsellor and prince of peace. A child born to be a suffering servant who would bear the sins of many, dying violently only to once again see the light of life.
Promises whispered through the centuries, almost like puzzle pieces stretching across time and space not yet arranged into a coherent picture, longings given expression in the pining, praying and lamenting of God’s people, but still left unmet… Until the advent of God’s anointed ruler who would usher in peace. His name is Jesus, Immanuel, God with us. The promised King has come. And the church for 2,000 years has celebrated the arrival of more than God up there, or God out there, but God with us.

In this series we are going to be looking at seven miracles Jesus performed, signs that were witnessed first-hand by the apostle John, one of Jesus’ closest friends, who wrote them down for us all. And our hope is that, as we explore these stories we would see the glory of Jesus — the one who reveals the essence of God’s character — and move toward him in faith and worship, as His opinion, approval and desire for us become the weightiest reality in our lives.

The church is a people called to belong to God and to one another. People committed to intercessory prayer, making disciples, joining God’s mission, proclaiming His good news and growing into the likeness of Christ. We are exploring these fundamental spiritual rhythms together.

A Modern Prayer of Lament from Darrell Johnson at The Way Church on May 29.
--
How long? How long is the language of lament.
How long is the vocabulary of longing — the sigh of the tired soul clinging on to the hope of tomorrow.
How long is the natural tongue of a heart attuned to the cries of the hurting.
How long is the cry of a heart primed for action: a soul ready to give, serve, protest, pray and participate in the kingdom come.
How long is an utterance of faith when life hurts like hell.
We have faith that God will hear.
Faith that God will comfort.
Faith that God will right all wrongs.
Faith that God will make wars cease from the ends of the earth.
Faith that God will, one day, wipe away all tears.
That day is coming.
But how long O Lord?

Hope
Jeremy King
October 25, 2020
Hope is peering into the future and anticipating good things. Hope breathes vibrant expectancy into our lives that the best is yet to come. Hope allows tomorrow to provide strength for today. The Christian hope is rooted in the person of Jesus Christ — His life, death and resurrection!

Justice
Jason Ballard
October 18, 2020
God is a God of justice.
The Biblical view of justice is multilayered. Justice includes perpetrators of injustice being held accountable, and the vulnerable and marginalized being comforted, cared for and restored.
In other words, Biblical justice involves standing up to the bully and comforting the broken.

Revelation 21:1-5
Our world is a beautiful place.
We have all had moments of being swept up into the awe-inspiring majesty of creation, whether it be the show-stopping grandeur of a mountain peak, or the stunning display of stars on a clear night.
Even in the midst of pervasive brokenness, beauty acts as a signpost directing our gaze toward the goodness of the Creator and the nature of His coming Kingdom.

GriefDarrell Johnson

Genesis 2:4-3:24
Grief. We feel it everywhere. We hear it everywhere. Some might say it is the dominant note of this season. And what we need is a story that makes sense of our grief; a story that doesn’t dismiss our sorrow but, rather, helps us move through it with a measure of joy, providing the strength we need to keep going. On Sunday we were reminded that there is such a story; a story about a Someone who not only helps us understand our grief, but meets us in the middle of it, giving us hope, healing and new life!

Revelation 21:1-5
Vision is a picture of the future that provides priorities, passion and perseverance in the present. Sunday’s message explored the Bible’s vision of a new heavens and new earth. We were introduced to the big story of scripture and our church’s place in it.
