Hey Change Maker! My guest this week is Joe Knopp, founder of Ripple. Ripple is a social enterprise that uses the profits from their reusable water bottles to build wells in developing countries.
ABOUT JOE:
Joe is a 21 year old entrepreneur from the small town of East Canton, Ohio.While in college, Joe started a reusable water bottle company out of his dorm room that aims to give others in low-income nations access to clean water.
ABOUT RIPPLE:
Every 2,000 Ripple bottles sold builds a well in a low-income nation. The bottles are 32 oz, BPA free, and keep your water icy cold for 24 hours and your coffee or tea hot for up to 12 hours. Engraved on the backside of every bottle is the village name and coordinates of the community that specific bottle supports. It took just 6 months to build the first well. Then the Ripple team headed over to Uganda where they built the FIRST ever modern solar powered well for a remote village in the country. After returning, the team grew to seven, and they’ve been able to build 20 water wells and give more than 50,000 people access to clean water in just 15 months.

Hey Change Maker! My guests this week are Jennifer Long and Keisha Head of AEquitas. AEquitas is a nonprofit organization focused on developing, evaluating, and refining prosecution practices related to gender-based violence and human trafficking. They are a team of former prosecutors working globally to hold offenders accountable and promote victim safety.
ABOUT JENNIFER:
Jennifer began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia, where she prosecuted cases involving adult and child physical and sexual abuse as a member of her office's Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit.
Through this work, she sought justice on behalf of victims of sexual violence, intimate partner violence and stalking. Many of those victimns were sexually exploited women. This fueled her early commitment to improve a system that seemed to work against, and often failed to protect, countless victims of sexual violence and exploitation.
Intent on improving the systemic response, she joined the National Center on the Prosecution of Violence Against Women as a Senior Attorney in 2004, working for Teresa Scalzo, recognized as one of the foremost leaders on issues related to sexual violence. Later, she served as Director. In 2009, she co-founded AEquitas to improve the quality of justice in sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking and human trafficking cases by developing, evaluating, and refining prosecution practices.
ABOUT KEISHA:
Mrs. Keisha Head is more than just a survivor of child sex trafficking. For the past 10 years, she has served as a nationally recognized speaker and advocate aiming to end all forms of human trafficking. She has been called upon by the US Department of Justice and advocates for legislation that protects victims of human trafficking. She has also worked closely with the Children’s Advocacy Center and she uses her personal story of being a victim, turned survivor, emerged leader, to serve as an inspiration for others.
In 2011, Head was awarded the Paul Howard’s Fulton County District Attorney “Voices for Victims” Award. Head has been featured in numerous local and national news articles and appeared on various televised broadcasts, including Fox News and CNN, to spread awareness nationally. In 2012, her first televised interview “How To Stop the Candy Shop” conducted by PBA’s Ross Scott received the Southeastern Emmy. In 2013, Head was awarded the “Voice of Courage” Award from Darkness to Light, an organization that advocates and provides services for sexual abuse victims. Head was also featured in the November 2014 Special Men’s Edition of Ebony Magazine.
Head currently serves as Secretary of the Board for the Sun Gate Foundation, an organization that provides educational assistance to survivors of human trafficking. In 2018, Teresa Pike Tomlinson, Mayor of Columbus, Georgia, declared April 12th “Keisha Head Day” and awarded Head with the key to the city.
In 2020, Keisha started CEO Bizness and CEO Biz Kids, a company that serves as an incubator for entrepreneurs to become successful business owners while breaking the cycles of generational poverty. She is also the lead case manager for the Salvation Army Haven ATL Program.
Apart from Advocating, Head is a wife and mother of four beautiful children. She is also a passionate writer and plans to publish her first novel titled “Survival Mode” in the near future.
ABOUT AEQUITAS:
AEquitas is a nonprofit based in Washington DC and is the go-to resource for assistance related to the prosecution of human trafficking, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and exploitation. They leverage our unparalleled staff expertise and broad network of professionals to empower prosecutors to more effectively respond to these crimes. In doing so, they are fighting to end impunity for offenders while centering and enhancing support for the victims and survivors who are so often left behind in the fight for criminal justice reform.

Charlotte Garnes launched ReNforce, a nonprofit organization that compliments the labor force by administering tailored training and coaching to businesses and organizations that are looking to employ justice-involved individuals within their workforce. Charlotte also manages and operates Innovative Staffing Solutions whose responsibility is to staff and employ the underutilized workforce of justice-involved individuals. She organized the Dignity LeadHERship Alliance (DLA) collective of directly impacted women successfully experienced with informing policy through lived expertise that advocates for marginalized women internationally. Advocate, mentor, social change agent, and educator, Charlotte’s most recent endeavor is the establishing and presenting her customized trainings and workshops focused on workforce development and successful re-integration for those formerly incarcerated or justice involved. It is her desire to assist individuals returning home from incarceration with more professional and wholesome opportunities to obtain employment, housing, and goals for self-sufficiency. Through her vision, Charlotte intends to use her focus and passion to shift the community’s perception associated with mass incarceration. Through her personal experience, she works to change the stigma and prejudices surrounding formerly incarcerated and/or the directly impacted.

Hey Change Maker! Welcome to Week 3 of our Racism & Poverty series. This week my guest is Charlotte Garnes, an advocate, mentor, social change agent, and educator.
ABOUT CHARLOTTE:
Charlotte Garnes launched ReNforce, a nonprofit organization that compliments the labor force by administering tailored training and coaching to businesses and organizations that are looking to employ justice-involved individuals within their workforce. Charlotte also manages and operates Innovative Staffing Solutions whose responsibility is to staff and employ the underutilized workforce of justice-involved individuals. She organized the Dignity LeadHERship Alliance (DLA) collective of directly impacted women successfully experienced with informing policy through lived expertise that advocates for marginalized women internationally. Advocate, mentor, social change agent, and educator, Charlotte’s most recent endeavor is the establishing and presenting her customized trainings and workshops focused on workforce development and successful re-integration for those formerly incarcerated or justice involved. It is her desire to assist individuals returning home from incarceration with more professional and wholesome opportunities to obtain employment, housing, and goals for self-sufficiency. Through her vision, Charlotte intends to use her focus and passion to shift the community’s perception associated with mass incarceration. Through her personal experience, she works to change the stigma and prejudices surrounding formerly incarcerated and/or the directly impacted.

Hey Change Maker! Welcome to Week 2 of our Racism & Poverty series. This week we are going outside the US to see how racism keeps people in poverty in Romania. Rachel Ross, our very first returning podcast guest, is the founder and executive director of Forget Me Not Ministries, a nonprofit organization that is educating, embracing and equipping the Roma for Christ.
ABOUT RACHEL:
Rachel Ross is an adoptive mama with two beautiful children, Izabella and Izaiah. She is a graduate of Lincoln Christian University, and the founding director of Forget Me Not Ministries in Tinca, Romania. Rachel is working with the Roma gypsies to equip, educate, and empower them in order to prevent abandonment, abuse, trafficking, and child marriages. God gave Rachel a heart for the abandoned and for Romania in junior high, growing up in Las Vegas. He has taken her on an incredible journey over the past 17 years living in Romania, and after she began working with abandoned babies and children, her passion grew to help break the cycles the Roma community are often caught in, allowing families to stay together and the number of orphans in Romania to decrease. Rachel’s heart is to keep Christ at the center of all Forget Me Not projects and truly believes that personal, community, and generational transformation are possible with God.

Based in Tinca, Romania, Forget Me Not Ministries is working to break the destructive cycles of poverty that the Roma are trapped in due to racial descrimination, lack of education, and an absence of jobs. Each program is designed to bring dignity and empowerment to the Roma by showing them that they are capable and worthy.

Hey Change Maker! We’re back with our first in a series of 4 episodes about how racism keeps people in poverty! My guest this week is Dr Zaria Davis - a mentor, educator, and advocate.
ABOUT DR ZARIA:
Dr. Zaria Davis is a mentor, educator, and advocate. She serves as a coach and consultant for nonprofits and businesses through New Direction Coaching & Consulting, LLC. Zaria launched Filling The Gap Services in 2019, addressing many of the voids of services in her community for formerly incarcerated women, serving on the UnlockHigherEd Steering Committee which advocates for removal of barriers for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated scholars. Zaria holds a DSW (Social Work) from Capella University, MSW from University of Cincinnati and BA in Sociology from Wilberforce University. She is currently enrolled in Eden Theological Seminary pursuing her MDiv. Zaria is a member of various local and national organizations. Dr. Davis is a JustLeadershipUSA Leading with Conviction 2019 Graduate and graduate of Leadership Cincinnati Class 44. She serves as a board member for Dress for Success Cincinnati, Ohio Justice & Policy Center, and the Robert O'Neal Multicultural Art Center (ROMAC).
Dr. Davis is the recipient of the Restored Citizen Award in 2019 and Mary Ivers Success Award in 2020. She is actively engaged in her local community in developing and training new advocates, especially those impacted by the criminal legal system. Dr. Davis is a Subject Matter Expert with Jamii Sisterhood, Dignity LeadHership Alliance and serves on the Ed Trust's Justice Fellows Advisory Board. She is passionate about reducing the prison population and fully restoring directly impacted people’s citizenship. Dr. Davis provides individual and organizational coaching and consulting, conducts workshops and presentations, facilitation, as well as public and keynote speaking engagements throughout the country.

Hey Change Maker! My guest this week is Katie Martinez, founder of Elegantees, an ethical fashion brand fighting human trafficking in Nepal through job creation for survivors.
ABOUT KATIE:
Katie Martinez created Elegantees because shopping was hard. She needed tops that were pretty, comfortable, and with proper coverage. Having spent her life both on a farm in Iowa, and in the Fashion District of New York City, she saw two extremes in the way women dress. A common approach was to avoid fashion altogether and wear the same tee and jeans/leggings daily. The other extreme was to put such an emphasis on fashion that it becomes an identity. Elegantees was created for the woman who seeks to find a balance between fashion and life.
ABOUT ELEGANTEES:
Elegantees’ aim is to fight human trafficking in Nepal through employment opportunities. All their products are made ethically, and most are made by those who have overcome. They dream to expand from one sewing center to several to provide more jobs. The waiting list is between 300-500 women who desire to work for Elegantees. Each purchase gets them closer to that goal!
Designs are ethically made by women (and some men too) who are paid fair wages. Fabric is sustainable using organic cotton in new fabrics we dye. Elegantees also source from dead stock fabric for non-organic blends.

ABOUT BRIAN:
Brian Holland is the proud husband of Ginney and father of Emily and Duke, and proud father-in-law to Zach (Emily) and Sinclaire (Duke). Brian attended Samford University and finished his undergraduate degree at Mercer University. Throughout the 1990’s Brian and Ginney moved 2 times as they followed ministry opportunities to Tupelo, MS and back to Atlanta. During that time, he finished his seminary work at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. After 20 years of serving as Youth Pastor of 3 churches he started the first Phoenix Community in Duluth, GA in a Pizza Pub called Pepperoni’s Tavern. At the height of the economic collapse which swept through America from 2008-2013 Brian, along with his great friends and co-founders Jeff Bagwell and Greg Sweatt launched Phoenix Roasters, Inc. #CoffeeThatMatters. This would become the revenue engine which would fund the dream to see the broken and burnt up rise up from the ashes of life both here in America and there in the coffee growing communities around the world. Recently Brian and Phoenix Pastor Britt Mooney, along with all the Phoenix Community pastors published their first book, “Say Yes. How God Sized Dreams Take Flight.”

Britt has been a teacher in Georgia and missionary to Korea, and now works with missional coffee company Phoenix Roasters. He is an author, and he and his wife Becca have planted a church in Suwanee, GA.

Hey Change Maker! My guest this week is Megan Fischer of Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank. Did you know that diapers are not covered by any type of government assistance? Sweet Cheeks distributes over 2 million diapers to those in need in their community each year.
ABOUT MEGAN:
Megan started Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank in 2015 after learning diapers weren’t covered under any government assistance programs. She has grown the organization into one of the largest basic needs banks in the country, and with a team of 5 staff and hundreds of volunteers, distributes more than 2 million diapers and 550,000 period products annually from a 16,000 sq ft facility in Cincinnati. Megan is a Miami ’08 alumnae with degrees in Journalism and Creative Writing, and worked in higher-ed publishing before leaving the corporate world to run her nonprofit full-time. She currently serves on the board of Cincinnati-based nonprofit Leadership Council for Nonprofits and is on the Advisory Committee for the National Diaper Bank Network. Megan is a graduate of BOLD (Board Orientation & Leadership Development) Class 3 and a member of C-Change Class 15.

Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank is one of three programs of COVERD Greater Cincinnati. Founded in 2015, Sweet Cheeks distributes over 2 million diapers a year into the community. As requests for more and different basic hygiene items came in, the organization expanded in 2018 to create Tidal Babe Period Bank, which distributes over half a million period products each year. During the pandemic, a third (and final!) program was piloted, Fly & Dry Basic Needs Bank, which serves adults with incontinence products.

She is originally from San Diego, CA and has been residing in the Dominican Republic for the last 4 years, where she met her now husband Diego. They were married in March 2021. She is passionate about poverty alleviation and empowering those whose voices are rarely heard. She sees Christ Centered financial services as a key element in a holistic approach to poverty alleviation and loves watching how as little as $50 can change a whole family's life and trajectory.

Emilee is the follower of Jesus, wife of Ever, mommy of 3, founder of SoloHope, and lover of 3-hour coffee dates. After listening to the many challenges women in rural Honduras face, Emilee saw the need for jobs. In 2012, she had a random idea to make bracelets out of pine needles and thread. Alongside artisans Dilcia and Maribel, they began the roller coaster journey of SoloHope that has grown to include 10 artisans as well as women's co-op partnerships. Emilee and her family call Honduras home but are currently Stateside for an extended season and are taking the opportunity to eat as much Chickfila as possible.

ABOUT RACHEL:
Rachel Ross is an adoptive mama with two beautiful children, Izabella and Izaiah. She is a graduate of Lincoln Christian University, and the founding director of Forget Me Not Ministries in Tinca, Romania. Rachel is working with the Roma gypsies to equip, educate, and empower them in order to prevent abandonment, abuse, trafficking, and child marriages. God gave Rachel a heart for the abandoned and for Romania in junior high, growing up in Las Vegas. He has taken her on an incredible journey over the past 17 years living in Romania, and after she began working with abandoned babies and children, her passion grew to help break the cycles the Roma community are often caught in, allowing families to stay together and the number of orphans in Romania to decrease. Rachel’s heart is to keep Christ at the center of all Forget Me Not projects and truly believes that personal, community, and generational transformation are possible with God.

ABOUT RAMESH:
Ramesh Sapkota is the Founder and President of Our Daughters International. Exposed to Human Trafficking and its evils nearly 30 years ago, Ramesh made a commitment to bring a stop to trafficking in Nepal which lead him to start his organization in 2009. Since then, they have rescued and provided holistic care and training to over 9000 daughters.
ABOUT ALLISON:
Allison Sapkota works as a liaison officer at the Nepal office of ODI. She completed her bachelor's from Liberty University and is currently back in Nepal working with the daughters at the training center. She is passionate about women empowerment & holds a firm belief that empowered women eventually go on to empower even more women!
ABOUT OUR DAUGHTERS INTERNATIONAL:
Our Daughters International, and their partners, exist to bring an end to human trafficking, and to bring our daughters into safety. Their holistic approach enables rescued victims of trafficking to be restored as daughters and developed as leaders impacting their communities for today and tomorrow.
Our Daughters International and their partners use the acronym S.E.E.D. to inform their courses of action: Safety, Empowerment, Eradication, and Development. They bring trafficked women into SAFETY. Living next to one of the city’s most well-known shelters had Amy the unique opportunity to build relationships with many of the residents. The inspirational stories many of the women shared of overcoming emotional, physical and financial abuse were the catalyst for creating Rebel Nell. Amy was adamant about providing women in the shelters with an opportunity to lead an independent life. She believed that employment paired with financial literacy, business education, and a focus on life wellness would help them regain the confidence they need to lead them on the path to success.
Prior to taking over as CEO of Rebel Nell, she served as Vice President of Special Projects and General Counsel for the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE). RISE and as the Associate Counsel for the Detroit Tigers. She achieved her Bachelor of Arts in History from Kenyon College, her Juris Doctorate from New England School of Law, and her Masters of Business Administration from Suffolk University.
Amy has been recognized for the impact she has had in the city of Detroit in Dbusiness Thirty in Their 30s Detroit’s Premier Business Journal, Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year: 2016 Michigan and Northwest Ohio.

Hey Change Maker! My guest this week is Rachel Ross, founder and executive director of Forget Me Not Ministries, a nonprofit organization that is educating, embracing and equipping the Roma for Christ.
ABOUT RACHEL:
Rachel Ross is an adoptive mama with two beautiful children, Izabella and Izaiah. She is a graduate of Lincoln Christian University, and the founding director of Forget Me Not Ministries in Tinca, Romania. Rachel is working with the Roma gypsies to equip, educate, and empower them in order to prevent abandonment, abuse, trafficking, and child marriages. God gave Rachel a heart for the abandoned and for Romania in junior high, growing up in Las Vegas. He has taken her on an incredible journey over the past 17 years living in Romania, and after she began working with abandoned babies and children, her passion grew to help break the cycles the Roma community are often caught in, allowing families to stay together and the number of orphans in Romania to decrease. Rachel’s heart is to keep Christ at the center of all Forget Me Not projects and truly believes that personal, community, and generational transformation are possible with God.
ABOUT FORGET ME NOT MINISTRIES:
Based in Tinca, Romania, Forget Me Not Ministries is working to break the destructive cycles of poverty that the Roma are trapped in due to racial descrimination, lack of education, and an absence of jobs. Each program is designed to bring dignity and empowerment to the Roma by showing them that they are capable and worthy.

ABOUT BETHANY:
Bethany Tran is a problem solver. She left a stable career in marketing to start The Root Collective because the lack of jobs in underserved communities wasn’t being addressed. She believes that commerce can change the world, that women are a key part of that, and that every single person has the power to create a better future. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband, two dogs, chickens and a parade of foster dogs constantly in and out of the house. She likes to ferment things in her kitchen, thinks pizza should be its own food group, and that unicorns just might exist.
ABOUT THE ROOT COLLECTIVE:
The Root Collective partners with small, independent workshops because they believe that's where the most impact in communities happen. Their goal is to support existing workshops that are run by local business owners. All of their producers receive beyond fair trade wages.
