It is vital to the success of your business to know and monitor the backend numbers in your business. In this episode, we review 3 important numbers to be calculating/focusing on to make sure you are bringing in the profit you deserve.
- Owning or Renting a Space: Your mortgage or rent per month should be 12% of your total revenue. (monthly revenue) x .12= (monthly rent)
- Supply Cost: Your budget on back bar supplies should be no more than 15%. (Cost for back bar supplies) / (Total monthly revenue) = % supply cost
- Calculate Target Profit: Unseen costs can contribute to service providers only getting a 25-35% profit. Your goal should always be 50%.

Today we are talking all about the HALT method. The HALT method is an acronym that you can use to keep from heading into what is known as the emotional danger zone. HALT stands for hunger, anger, lonely, tired, and can occasionally have an O in there, which stands for overwhelmed. When we are feeling emotionally off balance, it's important to stop and consider what steps we need to take to regulate our emotions. Here are a few simple steps you can follow:
Step 1: Awareness - be in tune with yourself and how you are feeling.
Step 2: Scan yourself in the HALT method - What are you missing that might make you feel off?
Step 3: Figure out your needs - What do you need to adjust to have your needs met?
Step 4: Set up a routine - Maybe that includes exercising, meal prepping, boundaries, communication, etc.

Today is friendly check in with you to see where you are at right now with your business as an entrepreneur. We will share more about why we believe that follow through with goals that you create for your business are important and WHY.
What type of person are you?:
- HIGHFLIER - You made goals and are staying on track.
- DEFEATIST - You made goals but already quit.
- PROCRASTINATOR - Forgot to make goals... still procrastinating.
- DO NOTHING - Didn't want to, didn't know how to, or felt lost.
Here is a simple process to follow:
- Analyze Your Past Data: What was your gross business revenue last year between retail sales and services and any other ways you bring in income?
- Decide Your Goal $$$: Set how much you would like to make this year. Most people choose making more - is that 5%, 10%, 20% etc? Making more doesn't mean you have to work more.. you could also choose to increase prices.
- Break Down the Money $$$: Take that Goal Dollar amount and break it down quarterly, monthly and weekly. Example:
If you wanted to make $200,000 a year-
Quarterly- $50,000
Monthly $16,600
Weekly $4,150*Factor in the time you plan to take off during the year.4. Break Down $$$: The amount between services and retail. This is income you can make without being in the studio! Don't forget to also set goals for retail income!

As estheticians, it is part of our job to effectively build trust and communicate with our clients. But, how do we do this? Today we are unpacking the 3 ways that we have learned to be effective communicators with our clients:
- Minimize judgement: Don't think you are above this. We all know what it feels like to be judged. Its not a great feeling. We all do it subconsciously.
- Be quick to listen & slow to speak: Know when to speak and ask more questions always!
- Respect the autonomy: Respect the fact that people have free will and they’re going to make the choices that they want. Not everyone is going to listen to the advice that you have and that’s OK. We can sometimes take it very personally when people don’t take our advice or suggestions, and the reality is it’s not about us.

We're back for season 2 of The Lounge by The Skyn Distillery and we are excited for all that we have to share! First up, let's start our year with a to do list to get your business on track! In order to grow and start fresh for 2023, you should be setting yourself up for success rather than flying by the seat of your pants! Here are some ideas to start out with:
1. TAXES -
- Set up a call with your tax accountant in January/February to go through what you need to set aside for this year.
- Start pulling all your data on expenses, profit, etc. for your meeting.
- If you don't have a tax accountant and a financial planner, get one! Mel uses Forethought Planning in Wayzata, MN.
2. REVENUE GOALS -
- Hold yourself accountable/ know what you need to make if you are not making goals for yourself.
- Give yourself a dollar amount to hit monthly and a dollar amount for the end of year! This kind of keeps you motivated and accountable.
- Ask yourself these questions: Do I need to raise prices? Do I want to take on more clients or services? Can I sell more retail to not have to work physically as much? How can I reduce expenses to have a higher profit?
3. CLEAN YOUR [ESTHI] ROOM -
- Start with a clean slate and reduce clutter.
- Toss out old [skincare] products that are in the back bar that are expired, toss out old towels or sheets, toss out any old tools or equipment that doesn't work for you anymore, restock and organize the disposables, deep clean your towel cabby, your steamer run with vinegar, and wash the floors. Resell anything in good shape.
4. INVEST IN YOURSELF AND BUSINESS -
- Block out time to take an education course, product training with a skincare line you work with, backend business stuff, etc. Whatever you're feeling you need inspiration or help with.
- We recommend finding that thing now so you can block it on your calendar! You can choose to actually travel and attend something out of state, choose something local, or even find something virtual if traveling is out of the question.

5. MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF AKA ME TIME! -
- In order to avoid burnout you need to actually be intentional and block specific time for yourself.

Ingredients: 1.5 oz prairie organic vodka sustainable seasons-apple, pear ginger flavor, 1.5 oz chai tea (chilled), 1 dash vanilla extract, garnish cinnamon stick and star anise and lemon twist.

Today, we are talking all about peptides! We love peptides because, as you have probably heard on other episodes, peptides PEP the skin! What are peptides? Peptides are a chain of two or more amino acids bonded together in a specific order to perform functions in the skin through communications between cells. This "communication" can improve and stimulate cellular processes such as collagen and elastin production, tissue repair, or even relaxing muscle contractions.
Peptides are naturally found within the skin, but the amount of naturally produced peptides decreases as we age, making topical peptides essential for aging gracefully. Since each peptide has different effects, our skincare routines must include peptides of all kinds. There are five different types of peptides used as skin-care actives: signaling peptides, carrier peptides, enzyme-inhibiting peptides, neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides and antimicrobial peptides.
We cover 3 different peptides to show you how they impact your skin!
- Acetyl Hexapeptide-8: (AKA Botox peptide) A neuro-peptide compound that temporarily intercepts messages from the brain to prevent muscle contractions. Repeated muscle contractions, whether involuntary or intentional, will lead to wrinkles and fine lines on the skin's surface. We know that we can't always control our reactions and expressions, so using a peptide such as this will help tremendously to keep these signs of aging at bay.
- Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7: (Lighten, stimulate collagen, reduce inflammation, tightening) Of all the peptides, this one seems to do a lot! This peptide is known for its ability to lighten the skin, reduce inflammation, improve skin elasticity, and stimulate the regeneration of collagen fibers. It also provides skin tightening benefits by increasing hyaluronic acid, attracting moisture into the epidermis.
- Copper Tripeptide-1: Copper Tripeptide-1 is a potent healing peptide that delivers essential nutrients to skin cells to aid tissue regeneration. As a regenerative ingredient, this peptide is both a treatment and preventative measure against the signs of premature aging.

Today we are sharing about a variety of client experiences that Emily has had lately. These experiences are common experiences that estheticians can have with their clients! When it comes to communication with clients, we want to emphasize the importance of how and when to communicate in an effective manner.
A few highlights about communication from the episode:
- Educate your clients to use products what work for them, not for their friends.
- Gently remind clients to be patient with results and what to do if they are not getting their desired results.
- Thoroughly educate your clients on the products they are including in their skincare regimen.
- Explain to your client the importance of quality of products over quantity.
- Make yourself available for communication and utilize other avenues to help you reach clients. For example:
- Email when you have openings
- Use social media to promote cancellations
- Ask clients to bump up their appointment to avoid gaps/ make room - it never hurts to ask!
Communication is the key to a successful business. Be a confident communicator, know your how and why’s, and don’t be shy to speak to what you need - people are waiting to get in!! Be direct and always be kind!

- Tucking the client into the bed; this means going around when they're in the bed and pressing on their legs or arms and wrapping them into the bed

This week, we talk about all things rosacea! The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, although a number of possible factors have been suggested, including abnormalities in the blood vessels of the face and a reaction to microscopic mites commonly found on the face. There are still a lot of theories around it being an auto-immune disorder. Overall though, 415 million people in the world are affected by it!
There are four subtypes of rosacea:
- Subtype 1: Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea vascular rosacea: Red areas of skin on the face, sometimes small blood vessels are visible.
- Subtype 2: Papulopustular Rosacea inflammatory rosacea: As well as facial redness, there are red bumps (papules) and pus-filled spots (pustules).
- Subtype 3: Phymatous Rosacea: The skin thickens and may become bumpy, particularly on the nose.
- Subtype 4: Ocular Rosacea: Symptoms that are centered around the eyes.
Common triggers for rosacea flare-ups:
- Hot Drinks & Alcoholic Drinks
- Spicy Foods
- Exposure to Heat
- Exercise
- Hot Baths & Showers
- Caffeine
- Stress

Drink of the episode: The Autumn Elixer CocktailIngredients: Autumn Elixer cocktail mix from Golden Fig in St. Paul, vodka, club soda, cinnamon, sugar, and caramel.
How To Make: Dip the rim of the glass in caramel and a cinnamon/sugar mix. Pour the Autumn Elixer mix over ice, add 1 shot of vodka, and top with club soda. Stir and garnish with a cinnamon stick and dried apples.

Types of Virtual Consults Available -
Virtual Skincare Consultation (30 min): Perfect for new clients with any skincare concerns outside of acne (i.e. rosacea, aging, finding a skincare routine, etc).
Virtual Skincare Follow Up (15 min): For current studio clients or current virtual clients who have need a consult due to change in skin concerns, need an adjustment in their current skincare routine, or who have a few additional questions.
Virtual Acne Bootcamp (45 min call - 4 month program): A Face Reality skincare program designed with a goal of clearing 90% of acne by the end of the 16 weeks. In addition to the first call, there are 2 follow ups, as well as bi-weekly check ins.
Bridal Skincare Consultation (45 min): A great option for brides who can't come in studio, or brides who want to get a jumpstart on their bridal skincare journey prior to coming into the studio.
Mentorship Consultation (45 min): For other estheticians who are looking for mentorship in the industry. This can cover anything from starting a career as an esthetician, opening a studio, social media help, or starting a podcast to different skincare lines and backend business information.

Once you are in the Shower-
- Gentle Facial Cleanser- Rub into palms and do body and face
- Apply Alpha Therapeutic Ultimate Body Scrub. Dispense scrub to palms and apply to each section of the body. - I usually start with feet and work my way up to legs, booty, stomach, arms, and back)
- For Face: Dispense Professional Micro Scrub with PC10 to palms and apply to face, neck, and décolleté. Gently massage for 2-3 minutes. Rinse off
Once you get out of shower-dry off and apply as follows:

How we turned SURVIVING INTO THRIVING for our business during the Pandemic of Covid! Learn about our journey of opening our business, getting hit with the pandemic, the challenges we overcame and how it actually made our business stronger. - Opening our Business in October 2019
- Income was based on Bridal Makeup + Commercial Makeup + Skincare Studio
- Pandemic Hits March 2020 - and we lose all of our bridal and commercial makeup
- We weren't able to do services so switching focusing on what we can control- retail sales
- We sold about $4k of retail in 3 weeks that we had on hand by doing shipping and actual doorstep deliveries (Mel made the bundles and Emily create the online campaigns on instagram)
- This created one of our biggest things that we do now- drop ship orders to clients
- We also started doing virtual skincare consults which also increased credibility and retail sales
- Summer of 2020 -Back in studio after re-opening and handling overwhelming cancellations, society unrest of curfews, wedding Makeup and commercial makeup were gone- our only focus was the Skincare Studio; which helped propel our business to be more successful
- Shift was focusing on the skincare studio and letting go of Makeup was a huge change of direction for us
- Year of 2021 - Outgrowing our space, moving into a larger space with two studios, filling our books full with appointments, spreading our income between services and retail, and bringing on new treatments and skincare lines.
- Being able to adapt, not being scared of change, investing in yourself through education

Let’s talk about one of our favorite treatments in the studio, Procell Microchanneling- collagen induction therapy; it helps stimulate collagen and elastin, rebuilds the skin, heals the skin, and helps minimize fine lines and wrinkles. Dermascope magazine coined it as, "the next generation of microneedling!" As we age we have less collagen in our skin and this is such a great treatment to stimulate new collagen to your skin!

- We can focus because we are not distracted by the daily distractions of personal and business life
- Prior to the trip we create an itinerary of what needs to be accomplished for that trip
