Two Idiots discuss movies and media in an effort to make a better life for their dog.
Meet the Dog: Kaiju is the brains of the operation. Best guess she is a Black Mouth Cur mix, she came in to Zolgar's life when his mother found her on the street. Zolgar agreed to keep her temporarily. Kaiju promptly declared that Zolgar belonged to her and he was powerless to argue. We tried to have Kaiju on the podcast, but she kept eating the microphones. She's also not very opinionated about movies.
Meet the Idiots: Grimm is a giant nerd and professional dork whose passions include fiction, gaming, and unchecked chaotic world building. Since he has OpinionsTM on most media, this seemed a good fit.
Zolgar is a media junky who grew up on a diet of scifi movies and fantasy novels, which may explain why he never really grew up. He has an unhealthy love of terrible sci-fi and creature feature films, which he loves inflicting upon Grimm. Shark movies especially hold a special place in his heart.

This idea originally came up during the big Hollywood writer's strike, we joked about pitching our own ideas to Hollywood. (We would never actually scab like that though, and the folks on our Discord decided it sounded like a good idea...

Join the Idiots as they discuss the remake/reboot/reimagining of the 1998 anime icon, Trigun.
We were a little hesitant about Trigun Stampede when we first heard about it. Grimm especially had some 'old bun yells at clouds' moments with the design choices and the animation style.
But we decided to sit down and watch it and, spoiler alert, we're both very glad we did. Released early in 2023, Trigun Stampede tells a new version of the story of Vash the Stampede, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, and Meryl Stryfe, and does a good job appealing to fans of the original, while still making it approachable for new fans and a younger audience.
In short, it's good. Go watch it.

The Idiots each have more than two decades experience with tabletop roleplaying games, having both run and played a wide variety of games. While their opinion on Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition differs these days, both find themselves irritated at the frequency at which people decide to try to brute-force D&D 5e into running something outside of it's wheelhouse, and decided to talk about some of the options if you want to do something outside of that high fantasy power fantasy niche, or you just want to try something new.
The options we present here are by no means a complete, exhaustive list, just a sampling of some of the games we're aware of. There are tons more amazing games out there, and I firmly believe that there is at least one game out there for any given person.

We've all heard the question or seen it on social media. When did Star Wars get so political, when did Star Trek get so political, when did comic books get so political. Feels like every week they're complaining about how yet another property has been 'ruined by a political agenda'.
Well, we decided to talk about that now, in a time when a political agenda is threatening to actually ruin our media.
This episode signifies the 'start' of our supporting the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in their strike. Hollywood executives are trying to eliminate as many of the 'little guys' as possible from movie and TV/streaming show production, as well as stop paying residuals. They want to turn it into an even more corporate, paint by numbers, soulless media machine. Well, we're not going to stand by and let that happen. In spirit, at least. Not like we have the power to actually do anything about it.
But we'll cheer on the ones who actually have the power to fight back.

We love Star Trek, we love the bright shiny virtually utopian future it shows us, where humans have matured as a species to the point where we exist as a singular species instead of thousands of little nations warring over resources or religion... but let's be honest, that's also how we know it's fiction, because humanity is likely to always have a penchant for greed, violence, and destruction. So we decided to discuss how some of the most iconic pieces of technology from the Star Trek franchise would be used in the hands of semi-modern humans.

We discuss the use of Faster-Than-Light (FTL) speed technology to propel inert mass as a weapon, and what it would take for a 'planet killer' weapon. Our initial thoughts were a bit off. While we do not know exactly how large of an explosion would be needed to render a planet uninhabitable, it is currently estimated to be approximately 10,000 megatons (for Earth). According to a calculator found after recording, to generate the same amount of energy as a 10,000 megaton explosion from a light-speed impact you would need an object weighing approximately 2100 pounds, a tungsten rod 30 feet long and 1 foot in diameter would achieve the required weight.

Join the Idiots as they discuss the best 2022 Finnish film about a gold miner killing Nazis that they have seen this year, Sisu!
Released in 2022, and finding its way to American cinemas in 2023, Sisu is a bloody, violent one-man-army type action movie featuring a lot of brutal Nazi kills. In short, it's a blast and if you haven't seen it yet, you should fix that. Starring Jorma Tommila, Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, Onni Tommila, and a really cute dog, this was a film that obviously was not made for American cinemas, but it was still a great ride and definitely deserves a place on a shelf next to the likes of Rambo, John Wick, and similar films.

Join the Idiots and special guest Cody from Robots Don't Age as they discuss the Terminator franchise in a long overdue episode.
Released in 1984, with an excellent cast, the original Terminator was an awesome story of (wo)man vs. machine, with a simple and effective formula. It could be argued though that it didn't really take off until 1991 with Terminator 2: Judgement Day which really captured the interest of audiences, and had some absolutely stunning special effects for its day. Since it's inception in 1984, the Terminator Franchise has spawned a total of 6 films, 1 tv series, 2 webseries, 1 novel, a bunch of video games, more comic book series than I care to count, and several tabletop games. Somehow, despite many lackluster entries into the franchise though, it still holds the attention of many.
So we brought our friend and Terminator fan Cody from the Robots Don't Age podcast to talk about this absolute clusterfuck of a franchise.
Just a quick note, this episode was actually recorded mid 2022 and sat in editing hell for almost a year. Some of our date-based references are a little out date.

Released in 2023 and starring Nicholas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina and an exceptionally talented supporting cast, including none other than Sonic the Hedgehog, I mean Ben Schwartz. Renfield is a modern day take on the story of Dracula, the acknowledges some of the past renditions of the tale, and even exists in a world where the book is a thing. This is not a dark, serious Dracula story. No, it's an entirely too self away comedy horror take on the story, told from the perspective of Dracula's familiar, Renfield. It belongs alongside such great, terrible films like Tremors and Army of Darkness, and is well worth the watch if you enjoy that kind of idiocy.

Released in 2010, starring Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Gackt, and the legendary Ron Perlman, this hyper stylistic action film has largely been forgotten. It's strange, and humorous at times, featuring aesthetics pulled heavily from Japanese puppet theater, or Bunraku. It's a story of vengeance, romance, betrayal, and just wanting to serve the drinks.

We've all had it happen. They announce a movie based on a property we love, we go to the theater, get our soda and popcorn and settle in to watch our favorite thing up on the silver screen. We know it's going to be different, and probably not as good as the source material because things have to be changed for different media formats... but what we see on that screen makes our soda go flat, our popcorn go stale, and actively tries to suck away even our joy of the original piece.
We could have gone all night. We should do it again sometime, because we barely touched on ones that weren't movies. Movies do tend to be the most egregious and rage inducing though.

Join the Idiots as they discuss the 1987 Vampire film The Lost Boys with all the professionalism you have come to expect.
Released in 1987 and starring Kiefer Sutherland, Dianne Wiest, Corey Feldman, Alex Winter, and a handful of other people no one had really heard of back in the 80s, this low-budget action/horror/comedy was destined to become a cult classic. It's a brilliant mix of delightfully done horror and clever one liners all from a cast that was perfect for what this film needed. Remarkably despite being from the mid-80s, it holds up well as they relied on minimalist special effects most of the time, and well done practical effects. We can't forget the most important character though, the oiled up, shirtless saxophone player from the beach concert, Timmy Cappello.

A Long Long Time Ago in a Desert Far Far Away (in California, so not actually that far), a guy named George started filming a silly space opera that was in no small part social commentary on the war in Vietnam. This little film called "Star Wars" (later re-titled "A New Hope") would go on to launch one of the biggest Sci-Fi franchises of all time with its original three films. Then, some years later (16 years after the 3rd/6th film released) George decided to fuck it all up! In 1999 The Phantom Menace was released, the official starting point of the Skywalker Saga and a new Prequel trilogy telling us the story of the rise and fall of a Jedi named Anakin Skywalker. These three films were ... questionable in quality and pretty poorly received.
Cut to 10 years later and Disney acquires Lucasfilm in a four billion dollar deal and starts milking that cash cow for all its worth, starting with 2015s The Force Awakens, the start of the final "trilogy" in the Skywalker Saga... and suddenly, the prequels didn't seem so bad.
Now, after having several years to sit on the entire Skywalker Saga, the Idiots decided to discuss the prequels and sequels and try to decide once and for all, which sucks more.

You go in to the latest superhero blockbuster, and either it's an ensemble film with 20 characters you need to watch two dozen other films to know the full story, or it's the origin story of a new (to this particular cinematic universe) hero! When it's a new hero, you find yourself thinking "hey, I've seen this movie before." because it feels like every hero origin story follows the exact same beats, the only thing that changes is the set pieces.

The Idiots discuss the family action film starring Ryan Reynolds and Mini-Ryan Reynolds, The Adam Project.
Released in 2022 on Netflix, and starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobel, and Zoe Saldana, along with Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, and bunch of other great supporting cast members, The Adam Project is, well, a Ryan Reynolds film. It avoids some tropes and pitfalls of the genre, and is better than it really has any right to be, but at the end of the day it's just a fun, rather forgettable excuse for Ryan Reynolds to be the wise cracking pretty boy action hero and save the day/world- except for Walker Scobell stealing the show as a miniature clone of Ryan Reynolds, capturing his snark and timing masterfully.
In short, it's worth watching if you enjoy watching Ryan Reynolds just Ryan Reynolds all over the screen.

The Idiots discuss the oddly named, female fronted action romp that is Gunpowder Milkshake.
Released in 2021, this feels almost like Netflix's attempt to launch their own John Wick type film series. The stylistic choices and over the top action sequences make this film sit nicely alongside other action greats, but what really sells it is the cast. Starring Karen Gillan, Lena Heady, Michelle Yeoh, Angella Basset, Paul Giamatti, and of course, Chloe Coleman, along with a great supporting cast.
It's a great ride from start to finish, and considering it's made of streaming, surprisingly well made.

The Idiots discuss the post apocalyptic cinematic masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road
Released in 2015, this film relaunched the franchise that formed our very concept of 'post apocalypse' in media. Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Hugh Keays-Bryne, along with an excellent supporting cast, an amazing and insane stunts department, and some top notch visual effects, this film lives up to the legacy of the original Mad Max films, and one would expect nothing less from the legendary George Miller.

What would you get if you crossed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mega-Man, and Weapon-X? Apex: Cybernetic Samurai Owl
A short review of the first arc of a fun indie action comic written by Kenny Aitken and illustrated by Brian Balando. A great superhero romp that doesn't demand a lot of your time, and doesn't try to to be more than it is. Plus, it's not yet another "what if superheroes, but assholes" comic (which kind start to get old after a while).
Is it perfect? No.
Am I looking forward to the second arc being done? Definitely!

A dystopic society where people work multiple jobs and do whatever they can on the side just to make enough money to keep a roof over their head and food on the table, while the wealthy elite sit in their ivory towers, basking in the glow of their exceptionally large bank accounts and stock portfolios, where the politicians are in the pockets of the giant corporations that would gladly sacrifice a thousand lives for .01% more profit, where your access to life saving medications and technologies are limited by how much money you have.... pure fiction, right? Riiiiiight?

The Idiots discuss the Netflix comic book movie The Old Guard.
Released in 2020, and starring Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, and Matthias Schoenaerts, The Old Guard is based off the 2017 Image comic of the same name and follows a group of immortal soldiers and an organization that wants to capture them and use them for personal gain. It features a diverse cast, and a great mix of action, humor, and social commentary. Well worth the watch, if for no other reason that Charlize Theron with an axe.

The Idiots discuss gatekeeping, the issues with it, and the issues it causes in communities.
We've all heard of it, most of us have seen it happen, some of us have participated in it (intentionally or not), and some of us have been victims of it. The act of keeping people out of a community or hobby because you don't think they belong. They're the wrong gender, the wrong skin color, the wrong sexuality, not enough of a fan. There's another kind of gatekeeping too though, one that's more widespread and more insidious.

The Idiots engage in MORTAL KOMBAT!! as they discuss this 2021 adaptation of the popular fighting game franchise.
Released on HBO Max, with a cast of relative unknowns (Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, and Mehcad Brooks make up the primary cast) and based off a video game, Mortal Kombat has all the makings of a complete dumpster fire of a movie. Somehow though, they got the right mix of serious and camp in the writing, and a cast who could pull it off and they made it work better than it ever should have, leading to the rare instance of a video game movie that's not a steaming pile of dung.

Siege Town is written by Benjamin Ruffet, illustrated by Andrey Portilla, with colors by Cristian Ramirez. A brutal, bloody fight for survival from a team I'd love to see more from.

Netflix surprised us with Episode 11 of The Sandman, so of course the Idiots had to talk about it!
Spoiler warning: If you have not watched episode 11 or read issues 17 and 18, there are spoilers contained herein. Lots of spoilers.
There's several little side stories within The Sandman, some hint at bigger things to come, some are just cool little standalones, following season 1 which gave us the first two major arcs from the comics, they decided to stealth drop one more episode that contains two of these side stories.
The Dream of 1000 Cats, an animated feature wherein we experience Dream and dreams from the perspective of a cat.
Calliope, the story of a Muse enslaved by a mortal, forced to give him inspiration to make him a successful author.
With some absolutely stellar casting in both. It definitely stands up to the rest of Sandman.

This week, Zolgar talks about the dark erotic supernatural mystery series Unnatural, written and illustrated by Mirka Andolfo and published by Image Comics.
Unnatural is one of those books that is kind of all over the place, but it works so well. It's a solid, well written story that is sexy without relying solely on sex appeal to sell, especially since the main character isn't typical comic book sexy.

The Idiots decided to shake things up something fierce and discuss Sandman, both the Netflix series and to a lesser extent the comic.
Spoiler warning: We give our general, spoiler free impressions of the show in the first 39 minutes. After 40 minutes, we go into full on spoiler discussion. We do give a warning with plenty of time to stop the episode though if you want to only listen to the spoiler free portion.
We had been wanting to do an episode of what we dubbed Serial Idiocy for a while now, but it's a serious time investment, both to watch a show and record, and we just couldn't agree on a show that was strong enough to warrant that kind of work load. Enter Sandman (exit light, enter night....), the Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's masterfully written, dark, twisted, and fantastical comic series which ran from 1989 to 1996. Production companies have been courting Gaiman trying to adapt Sandman for decades, and every time he has turned them down because the comic is his baby. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest comics ever written, and often considered one of the greatest things Gaiman has ever written (both of which are very high bars indeed). As an aside, if you want to be disgusted, go see if you can find some of the "adaptation" ideas that were shopped to Gaiman.
This group though? They did something right, they got Gaiman to sign on, and in the years they spent producing the show, Neil has been excited about it, praising the set work, the casting, the writing, everything. It couldn't POSSIBLY live up to the comic, could it? It couldn't be that good, could it?
Yes, yes it could.
I could sing the praises of The Sandman for hours in the show notes, but then you wouldn't have a reason to listen to the episode.
Again, a warning, if you're concerned about spoilers, stop the episode at around 39:30.

Zolgar returns to the works of the mad genius, Neil Gaiman, for Sandman Volume 2: The Doll's House.
I wasn't originally that taken in by The Sandman when I read Volume 1, so I decided it was only fair that I give it a real chance. Does the series hook it's claws into me with the next 8 issues, or is it just not my cup of tea? You'll have to listen to find out. I hadn't planned on doing an episode on Sandman Volume 2 so soon, but with the show releasing I needed to read it before I watched the show.

The Idiots decide to return to the universe of Star Wars to talk about just how screwed up the Clone Wars is.
Two slave armies killing each other to further the aims of one man, literal children not only fighting in the war but put in command positions, and so much more. This horrific event shook the entire galaxy, killing millions, destroying homes, livelihoods, etc. sounds like great fare for a kids show!
But, the Clone Wars is great, you should watch it if you haven't already.

The Idiots discuss Ryan Reynolds adventure in a video game landscape, Free Guy.
Released in 2021, starring Deadpool, Rey's mother, Blackbeard, that guy from Stranger Things (no, the other one), and a bunch of people you've probably seen before but don't know their names, along with a special cameo appearance of Captain America, Free Guy is one of those movies you watch to laugh and feel good as you see a hapless NPC turn in to a Big Damn Hero in order to help the woman of his dreams save his digital world...
When you put it like that, it really sounds like a crap movies, doesn't it? If you enjoy Ryan Reynolds films you'll probably enjoy this movie because it's fun and has a lot of heart. If you don't like Ryan Reynolds films, run far far away from this movie very quickly.
Also the cast is: Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, and Uktarsh Ambudkar (which Zolgar cannot pronounce to save his life).

Zolgar finally reads something written by the legendary troll herself, Gail Simone.
DC's Countdown to Infinite Crisis: Villains United, written by Gail Simone and illustrated by Dale Eaglesham and Val Semeiks, is a 6 issue mini series focused a small group of b and c-list characters from the DC rogues gallery facing off against a whole bunch of a through d list villains leading up to some big universe altering event ... that Zolgar doesn't really care about, he just wanted to read a book by Gail Simone, so find out if he was disappointed or not.
As a side note: apologies for the audio issues. The chirping is a fan Zolgar forgot to turn off, and he didn't have the time to re-record.

Grimm and Zolgar tackle Godzilla, the start of Legendary's Monsterverse franchise.
Released in 2014, Godzilla stars Aaron-Taylor Johson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, and Ken Wantanabe... and I guess some big old CGI monsters. Does it break the tradition of American Kaiju films of more being just a disaster movie that the disaster happens to be giant monsters? Can our protagonist be any more generic and uninteresting? Why doesn't Scarlet Witch just save the day since her kid is in danger? The Idiots tackle at least a few of these questions.

Zolgar gets serious for a moment to discuss George Takei's They Called Us Enemy.
George Takei tells the story of his time in the Japanese Internment camps that were scattered across the US from 1942 to 1946 following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He tells it with his recollection of his childhood innocence and wonder, seeing what happened as an adventure, juxtaposed with his adult understanding of just how horrible what America did back then was, and the gross violation of their rights as Americans. This graphic memoir from actor, author, and activist George Takei, co-written by Justin Eisinger and Steven Scott, and illustrated by Harmony Becker is a great insight into Takei's life and a small window into a dark time in American history.

You ever hear of this little film from the early 90s, Jurassic Park? Didn't think so. We're gonna talk about it with our friend Nyx (they/them) though.
Released in 1993 and starring one hell of an animatronic T-Rex, guys in amazing velociraptor puppet suits... oh yeah and Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park pushed the envelope of what was possible for movies at the time so much so that it still stands up to this day. This film holds a special place in the heart of many a millennial, Zolgar included, and is responsible for advances in special effects. It is also both directly and indirectly responsible for our increased knowledge of dinosaurs over the last 30 years.
Suffice it to say, we wanted to do something special for our season 1 finale, even though seasons are mostly just an organizational thing for us, and so we talked about one of the most important movies of the last 30 years, with someone who had never seen it before watching it for the episodes.

Zolgar reviews The Sandman, Volume 1.
Originally released in 1988 under DC's Vertigo label, written by the made genius Neil Gaiman, with art from a talented team, The Sandman has cemented its place in comic history. Along with The Watchmen it's one of the early books in the so-called 'Modern Age' of comics, also sometimes called the 'Dark Age' for the prevalence of dark, gritty, serious stories.

The Idiots discuss one of the most iconic post apocalypse films in history, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.
Released in 1981, starring Mel Gibson, Vernon Wells, Bruce Spence, and Kjell Nilsson, this high-octane action movie was released in the US as The Road Warrior, to avoid association with the theatrical flop that was Mad Max. The Road Warrior was much better received, and in the decades since both films have achieved cult classic status.

This was a fun topic, though we do get a little more negative about media than we usually do in this episode. Most of the films we discuss are ones that really potential and often even decent elements they just absolutely flubbed the execution.
Though there are a couple of exceptions that were just, frankly, terrible.

Released in 2009, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin; Zombieland is a ridiculous romp through the zombie apocalypse, with solid special effects, good acting, and a story of more than just surviving for another day. While certainly not a deep movie by any stretch of the imagination, it does have themes of human connection, finding yourself, and family. Also, a nun dropping a piano on a zombie.

It has the attention to detail and gorgeous aesthetics one would expect from Del Toro, and a story that blends the human element smoothly with giant robots punching giant monsters. Released in 1997 and starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich, as well as a stellar supporting cast including Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker, Ian Holm, and Tom Lister Jr, featuring visuals that were amazing for the day and still hold up remarkably well 25 years later, The Fifth Element is a movie with something for everyone.
Join the Idiots as they return to the Matrix for what is arguably the best of the sequels. (The only good sequel! ~Z) It's a bit of a long episode, because the Idiots had a lot to say on this film.

Released in 2021, and starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, along with Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, and Neil Patrick Harris, plus a great supporting cast. Gone are the early 2000s edgelord black trench coats and sunglasses, replaced with a much more modern and diverse attire for the cast. The Matrix Resurrections returns the Matrix franchise to being a more cerebral action movie with strong tones of social commentary, plus a healthy dose of meta commentary and some much needed levity.

Released in 1979 with amazing practical effects and sound design, starring Sigourney Weaver and an excellent supporting cast; Alien is one of the most iconic films of the late 20th century and continues to withstand the test of time more than 40 years later.
Join the Idiots as they tackle what is quite possibly the greatest comic book movie ever made, and briefly discuss the late, great Stan Lee who passed just before this film released, changing how his cameo hits. (Ninjas are cutting onions in here again. ~Z)
Released in 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced the wider world to Miles Morales (comics fans have, of course, known about him since 2011), and brought our first taste of the multiverse to the big screen. Starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, and Jake Johnson, along with a host of other amazingly talented and perfectly cast voices in supporting roles, along with amazing visuals and a great soundtrack, Spider-Verse is certainly deserving of all the awards it's received.
If you haven't seen Spider-Verse yet: Stop listening to the Idiots and go watch it, seriously.
