read, eat, repeat: Recent Episodes

Alissa Warren and Sally Killoran

Two friends talk about new release fiction and road-test the food within it... everything from Liane Moriarty's brownies in Apples Never Fall, and to the pickled pork in Hannah Kent's Devotion.

Join journalist, Alissa Warren and writer Sally Killoran as they delve into new release books mostly by Australian authors ... sometimes a bit late off the presses ... because between Alissa and Sally, they have seven kids under eleven and two dogs (one well-behaved, one not).

They talk food inspiration, feeding the circus and finding the good things amongst the chaos.

This monthly podcast is for fellow humble readers and hopeful cooks.

Alissa's seen the light in Michele Obama's new release, while also sharing tips when dealing with Difficult People, the new book from Dr Rebecca Ray.

Sal has read five books and attempts to recap them succinctly. She fails. She loved Gabrielle Zevin's epic Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, a perfect read for your next book club. Heather Darwent's The Things We Do To Our Friends is not for the weak-stomached, well-written, but evil as hell.

She also dives into three debut Australian authors. All That's Left Unsaid by Tracey Lien has been longlisted for the Stella Prize. It is set in Cabramatta and looks at Vietnamese culture and immigration, Saman Shad's The Matchmaker is a fun romance that looks at Pakastani culture in Paramatta, and she talks about bereavement catering in Dianne Yarwood's The Wakes. All three books are rich in food, culture and conversation

Alissa has cooked from two new release cookbooks - RecipeTin eats and Yumi Stynes' The Food Fix. Adore. Consider meals for the School Holidays sorted.

In this episode, we discuss Beautiful World Where Are You? by Sally Rooney and talk about the things twenty-somethings eat! Or more to the point, don't eat! What was your fav go-to recipe when you began cooking? Tuna pasta? Chicken risotto? Toast? Gum? Tea? Wine? We talk all of the above.

Sal road tests 'grits', a constant cooked by one of our most-loved characters of the past year, Kya (aka The Marsh Girl) from Delia Owens' Where the Crawdads Sing. Sal feeds them to her family who reject it until she comes up with a failsafe way to make any food better ...

And we chat about the latest books we're giving the most treasured people in our life this Christmas!

Happy days to you and your fav peeps.

We're talking about Liane Moriarty's latest novel, Apples Never Fall and ... inspired by the characters, we road test our fav brownies, the internet's best chicken soup and discuss Joy's hate for family cooking.

Sal's also in love with Nat's What I Reckon, the latest read by Australia's straight-shooting, witty cook ... and Alissa's reading Galah magazine, an Australian treasure from the bush.

IRL ... Alissa's dog Daisy dog dug up the garden while we recorded (such an unfocused podcast producer - might need a warning), Sal's kitchen is still sticky from marmalade and Alissa's phone resists the silent treatment. But we're here ... enjoying a chat. Hope you like being here with us, too. Thanks for listening, mum.
