With a simple yes of no checked off at the end of the day it was certainly hard to start this and hard to see how many days I had to mark "no's"

Today I'll talk about how this relates to your training and workouts

A lot of people view the weekend as a time where all bets are off and you can splurge on things like alcohol or food, as long as you get back to your "weekday" habits. Those people and thought process' couldn't be further from the truth. When it comes down to it there are 7 days in a week and if you spend 2 of those 7 days neglecting your good habits for bad ones it could be why you are questioning the results you're getting.

At the end of the day we urge you to take steps towards getting those weekend habits to look more like week day habits and you'll be pleasantly surprised with how much changes!

However, it takes a quick turn as on this episode it is about our newest staff member, Mike, rather than the usual fitness topic. Mike lets us in on his journey up until now and a little bit about what he was doing before he was with PPT full time. We cover all the topics you guys want to know stemming from what Mike's spirit animal is to what it is that Mike actually does here.

On this episode we are all about personal growth. Whether it comes to being a team player or improving upon things that you need for your own self benefit we have it covered. We use several examples with past and current staff members while really diving into what it means to be a team player. We reference Patrick Lencioni's book The Ideal Team Player to use examples for a lot of what we talk about.

At the end of the day it comes down to if you have these three attributes 1. Hunger, 2. Humbleness, 3. Smarts then you are an ideal team player. So now knowing that we challenge you to challenge yourself to level up in several different ways we talk about on today's episode. Including trying to apply these virtues to your everyday life. Thanks for tuning into another episode guys and we look forward to hearing your stories on your own personal growth.

Overrated/Underrated: Naps? Slides? Build Your Own Burger?

This week we have Tina Shkreli on for those who don't know is one of our members. Tina fit right in with our flow and came prepared with some client shoutouts as well as an overrated underrated topic for us to discuss.

Now, Tina has been an athlete her whole life but never really "worked out".  She decided later in her life it was time to hit the gym but never really "knew" what to do. Nothing really stuck until she experienced the PPT environment and what's helped her to stay consistent is how she feels after she works out. She knows that while it might not always be the thing that you are super motivated to do getting a workout in can change your whole day.

Tina says without a doubt the best thing here at Pratt is the environment here "the ability to do your own thing, but be with others that are also doing their own thing". We couldn't agree more and we're happy she feels that way! Thanks again Tina for coming on, we'll see you soon!

Overrated/Underrated: Haribo Gummy Bears? Volvo? Ketchup?

On this episode we hop right in to Overrated/Underrated with some interesting anecdote's on a few of our topics that may or may not urge you to go have a snack. Scroll down to find the links to the Volvo crash test videos we spoke about!

When it comes to the topic of the episode we don't hesitate to point out the do's and don'ts of competitive workouts. Being competitive can have a different meaning for everyone. Some like to push harder than others and while for certain people that can be beneficial, for others it can be detrimental.

Those who like to push the limits might not be a good candidate for getting competitive when working out as it can lead to injury and ultimately do more harm than good. At the end of the day we urge you to use your best judgement as sometimes having someone to compete against can help you squeeze out a few extra reps!

Overrated/Underrated: Close Parking Spot? 5 Day Work Week?

This week we have some controversial Overrated/Underrated Topics, Client Shoutouts, and ultimately make the case for 5:00 am.

We explain there's a lot of variables when it comes to your workday flow so it's important that you keep some structure especially when it comes to getting a workout in. We give some examples of how 5:00 AM has worked for us in our careers and how it could work for you in yours. We also recognized that a lot of our most consistent members come at 5:00 AM. Steve and his wife Kate are steady members of the 5:00 AM sessions which a lot of you know is not always easy to prioritize! But, as we explain, if you get your workout done first things in the morning it can have some big benefits.

Steve mentions this is the strongest he's felt in his entire life and was even able to do pull ups while on vacation recently! We hope you can take some of what lead to Steve’s success and apply it to your life.

Thanks Steve for coming on looking forward to seeing you at future 5:00 AM sessions!

Overrated/Underrated: Pumpkin Flavor? Fidget Spinners? Jets & Yankees??

Is age really just a number? Today we discuss why we don't really "care" about age when it comes to our exercise programs.  To some reading this that may sound a bit insane. Yes, we want to know what your age is when you start training with us BUT we don't automatically make assumptions of your capabilities or limitations due to you age.  We have an assessment process that we bring all members through to find out what the best place to start is.

To drive this point home, we have an 80 year old who is physically more capable than some 20 year olds. It would be a disservice to give that 80 yr old an exercise program based solely on his age and what an average 80 year old is capable of. It would be of equal disservice to give certain 20 yr olds "age appropriate” programs without respect to their individual goals and capabilities.

We transition the conversation to highlighting how empowering it is to feel healthy and strong and how many can get caught up in purely the visual benefits of working out and forget that there is so much more.

Enjoy this dive into our (self proclaimed) model member's journey from hesitant hot yoga lover to weighted exercise pro.

Pareen originally came to our building only to drop off her son to attend our athlete sessions.  After seeing a lawn sign, she decided to call and try us out.  With her friend Amy by her side (who also still trains with us) they came and did an introductory session with James and as you'll hear, were a little skeptical of him at first. Thankfully he did manage to convince them to do a trial and they have been hooked since!

From that point on Pareen has trusted us with her sessions and our plan for her to hit her goals.  You'll hear today how she dealt with some significant knee pain resulting from an injury on the ski slopes AND how she is now pain free and back to the slopes!!

Also in today's episode... Are beach boardwalk's overrated? Is Zevia brand grape "soda" underrated?  And what's with the language the teenagers are using now?? Ex. "That's so Suss."  "This is a great gym, No Cap." "Today was W."

When most people open a gym they focus on branding, marketing, logo's, colors, website, technology, etc.  All good things by the way!!

PPS, now known as PPT, took a different approach.

We focused all of our attention on giving the clients the best possible service and training around. If you were here in the early days you would have seen half fallen down random banners that did not have our logo on them (we didn't even have a an official logo when we started) scuffed up and dented walls, used equipment, and so on.

BUT, we genuinely cared about our members, their results, and their interactions and experience with us.  Our members started to have success and become our biggest fans, willing to spread the word to their friends and family.

It is truly the success all of our members had that made this place what it is today and we will continue to remember what got us here as we start to explore and invest some more time into the stuff that a business "should" be doing.

"I don't want to look like a man."

This is a very common phrase that is said to us all the time when females are meeting with us to consider starting up a weight training routine. To be fair, there have been men that also expressed they would prefer not to get big and bulky.

We as trainers know lifting weights doesn't automatically make you bulky and that a good program will contain a mix of cardio and weight lifting. So We wanted to touch on this (slightly) sensitive subject in todays episode.

Now we did want to speak to the people who most often express concern over this subject, which are women. We figured one of our most beloved trainers, Coach Sidney, could be of some help to ease concerns over weight lifting and the chances of getting big huge muscles from it.

Today we shouted out Jill M.! Here is the link to her testimonial video!!

Even if we don't reach our weight loss goals at the gym, most of us know at least our health is better by staying consistent with a workout routine.  But most people who have stayed consistent will agree the gym has done much more for them than just what the scale shows.

We chat today about what the gym has taught us in our own lives. After the episode try and think about what the gym/working out has taught you and you may then have more reasons to stay consistent when it gets hard to do so.

Scroll down to access the list of tips to save your fitness progress on the next vacation!

We often see a week or two of vacation sets someone back months in their fat loss journey. But does it really have to be this way? is it possible to do months worth of damage and fat loss reversal over the course of 1-2 weeks off?

We are firm believers in having fun on vacation and engaging in some behaviors that may not be great for your weight loss. There is a balance to be made however, with some good behaviors, that can make a huge positive impact during vacation. If done right these will set you up for quick success in getting back on track the first week back home.

Here are all the action items that you can do on vacation to offset the damage:

  • Track your steps, aim for 8-10k per day
  • Hit a short workout 3x per week, Roughly 30min. Gym is great but body weight circuit is fine as well (see below for workout list)
  • Bring or buy a few exercises bands. This will open many more possibilities for exercise.
  • Don't go "full send" on all meals. Generally pick one meal per day that you want to go all out on. Eat sensibly the other two meals and have some fun with snacks.
  • Water...LOTS of water. Have bottled water available to you at all times. Yes your weight will go up even more by adding the water but it is for the greater good later! The more water you drink during vacation the better off you will be after.
  • Don't stress about alcohol. Drinking 1 water in between each alcoholic beverage is underrated, take advantage.
  • Add a few protein shakes in now and then to help curb your appetite and keep your protein intake up (you will likely be having a lot of carbs and fats during this time)
  • Mentally prepare to gain weight. Understand this is very normal on vacation and you are not ruining all the progress you made.
  • Know the weight will come off if you get right back on track after vacation.

Here are the exercises that you can mix and match to make up a short body weight circuit. Pick 1 from each category (that's 4 items). Do 2min of cardio and 10 reps of the strength exercises.

Cardio: Run/Jog/Walk/Jumping Jacks/March In Place/Squat Thrust/Swim/Eliptical/Jump Rope

Upper Body: Push Ups (elevated on bench or couch if needed) / Bicep curls/ Band Pull Apart's/Band Rows/Side raises/Bench or couch dips

Lower Body: Lunges / Split Squats / Squats / Glute Bridges / 1 Leg RDL

Abs: Crunches / Straight Leg Sit Ups / Side Plank Hip Taps / Shoulder Taps / Leg Raises

For Today! First up, how do you end up with a certain trainer on a certain day? While the selection may ultimately end up being "random" The session of members coming into an hour has already been split up by a trainer in the best order possible so that all members are able to be coached to our maximum ability.  Just how much goes into deciding this? You may be surprised.

Next we talk about how many people get stuck at a decently high level of training and can't seem to break through to that next higher level.  What do you do if this is where you're at? What's the first step? What could lead to this happening? These are all questions covered on this subject.

Finally breathing.  Is there an appropriate time to breath during exercise? Yes. But it's not always the same for every person in every scenario.  For the vast majority there is a very simple way to be conscious about this.

Ever Wondered why your muscles are often sore after working out?  Why some days you're more sore than others? Or have you thought maybe you shouldn't be sore since you have been training consistently?  We dive into the topic of DOMS or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.  Hint Is it weird that James and I both like being sore after our workouts???

We then try to best answer the question of "how many days should I work out?" As with most questions when it come to health and fitness, there is no one answer so we give a few scenarios to offer perspective.

First up though, James gets all life advicey on you and talks about the phrase "do what you love" after one of our members commented that it appears we love what we do here at PPS. For James and I it's true.....but for Kyle?...........kidding, Or are we?

Be sure to fill out this one minute survey to make this podcast better if you haven't done so yet!

One of the common misconceptions about strength training is that lifting weights will automatically make you big and bulky....maybe so big that you won't fit through doorways... While their may be a period of rapid muscle growth when someone first starts lifting (Newbie Gainzzz) have ANY of our members ever stopped training with us bc they were getting too big and bulky?

Next we talk about training with pain.  Most people who are consistent with training will have done this, possibly many times, but is it ok? Should you change exercises, modify intensity, sit home on the couch instead??? We'll give you some real life examples of what we do with our members when pain is present.

Finally James gives a story from his childhood about how he was tricked into trying something he thought he would hate but then ended up loving it.  We follow up with how "tricking" people into trying us out may be the best thing for them.

Todays member questions are:

1. Are split body routines (upper one day and lower another day) better for you? Does a total body routine work better for some people?

2. How do I learn what to do in the gym?

After these James and I talk about the idea of other types of business' not creating a custom experience for you and how horrible/comical that might be. Yet in the fitness industry a "one size fits all" approach to working out seems to be prevalent.

Finally we introduce our athlete program and the main difference/s between what goes on in an athlete session vs and adult session here at Pratt Performance,

Next we talk about how some people are not concerned with a number on the scale but do still want to increase muscle and decrease body fat.  We give a few pointers of how to go about this as well as what generally happens when someone prioritizes too much cardio based activities in order to lose weight or change their body composition

Finally, our topic of the day.  Women's Figure Competition and more specifically the 5 women we have training with us now to compete on stage.  What their program look like, how much cardio they do and how they are dialing in their nutrition so that they can achieve results that they have never seen before!
