this is the last episode of this book series and there's no better place to leave things off than to talk about JOY (especially when times are tough). the last part of my book is really about my choice in prioritizing my own joy, even when things aren't always easy.
in this episode, i talk about:
my obsession with roses + what they taught me about creating a loving environment
how guilt + self-doubt are like trap doors that block joy
joy as a revolutionary act
a list of things that bring me joy
and the link between joy and pain

traveling alone has truly been one of the greatest joys of my life. i've gotten to do so many cool things and meet all different types of people. in this episode, i talk about why i'm a huge advocate for solo travel—and i also touch on the safety issue, especially for women. tw: i do talk about male violence against women and share statistics and a personal story that might be triggering. i hope we can shed more light on the real systemic problem that might make traveling alone unsafe, and i also feel like we're really lucky to be alive during a time when traveling alone is even an option.

"should" is a judgment that was learned and then, internalized.
in this episode, i talk about how choosing to leave my corporate job, to remain single and not get married in my 20's, and to travel alone as a woman were all invitations for others to "should" all over me.
but where does that shoulding even come from?
most of the shoulding that happens from others comes from internalized capitalism, internalized misogyny & homophobia, and an internalized stigma around "being single" stemming from the historically oppressive institution of marriage. fun stuff! i talk about why that is, the history, and how to understand it so it's easy to spot and even easier to dismiss as what it is, which is, basically, other people's internalized judgments.

catonya is a person who lives and breathes community care. we met in chicago, working for the same organization setting up community events (i write about that experience in the chapter on the south side). she's a mom of 4, with 1 grandchild, a community leader, organizer, advocate, activist, and all-around inspiring human being.
i'm SO excited to share this conversation where we talk about:
-how she got involved in community work to begin with
-the high turnover of nonprofits in her community + what can be done about that
-how faith is tied into service work

when i set out to write a book about my life, my only goal was to simply be truthful. and at the last minute, i censored myself (only to later correct that mistake and tell the truth).
i’m not alone in this, it’s pretty common, so in this episode, i talk about:
ultimately, telling the truth + speaking up is a process, whether it’s in your writing, your art, or just to yourself in your life. and the more we do it, the more we can shed light on abuse and make sure other people don’t have to suffer through the same things we did.
