Discussing The Sword. News, analysis, speculation and more. Part of the Topic Podcast Network (TPN).
Fifteen years ago, The Sword unleashed their monumental album, "Gods of the Earth" —
Recorded at Folkvang Studios in Austin, TX, the album instantly conveys what words can only try to describe: The Sword is not to be taken lightly. From the explosive lead track, "The Sundering," it becomes immediately apparent that The Sword has raised the bar on their distinctive sound. "Gods of the Earth" exudes more ambition, greater accomplishment, and an overall grander scale. Its colossal, mountaintop-friendly hooks, thunderous drumming, and oceanic bass lines cut through the air like a scythe, while frontman J.D. Cronise's ominous vocals weave fantastical tales rich with myth and mythology. The album is adorned with waves of powerful riffs and low-end thunder, dominating tracks like the immediate "Maiden, Mother & Crone," "Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians," "Under the Boughs," and the paralysing "The Black River."
For me personally, this album has always held a deep kinship. It remains evocative and evergreen, a testament to The Sword's enduring legacy that will continue to live on.

The Sword’s music is heavy, mighty, and replete with rich symbolism, narrative and poetry, spanning the worlds of mythology, fantasy, science-fiction and beyond the furthest reaches of the imagination.
