Today we’re hashing it out with Michael Wagner of Multichain Ventures and ToKES Platform. Michael is here to talk with us about his company’s recent contract with the State of Nevada to develop a pilot program for a cannabis-exclusive cannabis cryptocurrency payment system. Additionally, he discusses blockchain technology and how it can help with supply chain management with Nevada’s “seed-to-sale” policy.

Michael Wagner got his feet wet in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world back in 2013. In 2015, Michael gave up a formal career in investment securities analysis to dedicate himself fully to blockchain technology. In 2016, he launched ToKES Platform which later became Multicain Ventures.

According to Michael Wagner, before we get into cryptocurrency, it’s important to understand the concept of blockchain technology. In essence, blockchain is a distributed and decentralized ledger of activity. In regards to crypto, it provides a financial ecosystem that is transparent and trustless. Therefore, cryptocurrency is a digital form of money that is open to everyone around the world.

The advantage of using blockchain is that there is no centralized authority that has control over the supply or distribution of money. As a result, this decentralization allows for greater freedom. In regards to the cannabis space, this is especially valuable for the Nevada legalized cannabis industry. As many of you know, because cannabis is still federally illegal, the entire industry is forced to operate on a cash-only model. No credit cards, no debit cards, no checks, no bank accounts. It’s a huge pain! Additionally, it’s dangerous.

A payment processing system like ToKES Platform allows various decentralized node operators to avoid the red tape of the Federal rules on banking and cannabis. As a result, a payment processing system like the one being developed by Multichain Ventures could actually create an internal, traceable, transparent way to meet state regulations while allowing non-cash payment processing throughout the industry.

On March 25, 2019, the State of Nevada proposed AB466 – a bill requesting the “creation of a pilot program to facilitate certain financial transactions relating to marijuana.” Outlined details of the bill can be found here. Nevada’s state treasurer has been quite progressive in the efforts to fix the issues plaguing the Nevada legal cannabis industry and that’s why this proposal was put into place.

From a consumer standpoint, Michael Wagner says not much would change at first. Consumers would spend cash at the dispensaries just as they always have. However, when cash is ready to change hands in the industry, this is where Multichain Ventures comes into play. Working in tandem with cash transportation services, money will flow into a Federally-insured bank account.

After funds are reconciled, a digital token backed by those funds will be minted. Then, that token is returned to the depositing organization. At that point, that token can be shared between dispensaries, grow facilities, transportation services, and product producers like OMG THC and Experience Premium Cannabis as an internal currency and form of payment. Furthermore, there is the potential to pass those tokens to outside the market to pay for payroll, rent, utilities, and even pay Nevada State taxes.

The program should begin its beta rollout in the next few months across the State of Nevada. Michael Wagner knows it will take time to implement and educate the community, but he’s confident this will be a groundbreaking addition to the Nevada cannabis industry.

Benjamin Bey of Soul D’licious Seasonings and co-host Stephanie Magurno of THC Production, LLC interview a gaggle of budtenders from Jade Cannabis Company in Las Vegas and Reno. We’re chatting with them to hear some great stories, trials, tribulations, and more.

Today we’re hashing it out with budtenders Adriana & Andie from Jade Cannabis Company in Vegas and Morgan & Juan in Reno. Andie got into the industry for about nine months. She was a bartender and food service worker who transferred to Jade Cannabis Company after COVID-19 shut down the food industry.

Adriana was a stay-at-home mom. After deciding she was ready to get back into the workplace, she chose to work at Jade Cannabis Company.

Juan got into the industry about three years ago. He used to work at a childcare hospital. He began his journey at Jade Cannabis Company in admin and transferred over to budtending.

Morgan is the newest to the industry. She’s been at Jade Cannabis Company for a little less than three months. She’s a big fan of the Experience Premium Cannabis tinctures, especially their G.I. tincture.

Andie

A big part of budtending at Jade Cannabis Company is just having fun and interacting with the clientele. She loves the fast-paced environment and loves helping people. Whether they’re at Jade for medical or recreational cannabis, she gets her own high from assisting them and making their day.

Andie’s favorite products include anything new at Jade Cannabis Company. She has recently gotten into concentrates and loves flower as well. Working at Jade, she constantly feels like a kid in a candy store. However, her most favorite item is OMG THC’s vegan chocolate bar.

Juan

He loves how dynamic Jade Cannabis Company can be. There’s a fun party life all around the dispensary because of its location in Reno. Additionally, he loves the “bar” vibe, and he really enjoys being there because of the social aspect. Finally, he’s a big fan of helping people get past the stigmas associated with using cannabis. He feels tinctures are a great way to enter into the cannabis space.

For 420, Juan plans to celebrate by consuming a lot of cannabis. He loves the Soul D’licious Infused chipotle seasoning and plans to use a lot of it on the food he cooks for his friends and family. He also plans to eat some of OMG THC’s chocolate-covered cherries.

Morgan

Morgan feels there is a lot of stigmas and barriers to help people get over. It’s really a generational thing. Additionally, there was a lot of propaganda fed to the Baby Booms, and she works hard to make sure that she can dispel the rumors and get cannabis out to the people who need it. Finally, a lot of the issues are being addressed.

Morgan is a huge fan of all the EPC tinctures. She usually has at least 4 on hand and uses them for TMG, to help her get quality sleep, and celiac disease. Additionally, she takes the G.I. tincture to help with tummy troubles. Her boyfriend also uses EPC’s tinctures.

Adriana

Adriana is a big fan of vaping. While she was traditionally a flower smoker, she loves the convenience of vaping. MPX is one of her favorites. Today we’re hashing it out with Modest Jones from Vegas Cannabis Magazine. Modest Jones is an African-American writer, model/actress, entrepreneur, and mentor. Most known for a Verizon commercial that launched in 2019, Modest has been in the entertainment industry since she graduated from Framingham State University in 2005. Modest Jones discusses her early life, early career, and how she coped with self-esteem issues. Additionally, she discusses sexuality and the sexualization of women. Finally, she chats with us about her involvement in the cannabis industry and why she got involved.

While Modest Jones got out of university, she moved to the hip-hop industry in New York. At this point, she was not interested in cannabis and avoided it as much as possible. After the birth of her first child, she began having chemical changes in her body, and for many other reasons, she began to gravitate back toward cannabis use. Within the next five years, cannabis began moving to the mainstream and she started working at Vegas Cannabis Magazine. Recently, Modest began plans to start her own column at the magazine.

Today we’re talking again with esteemed award-winning budtender and grandmaster weed specialist Zulema Lino. We initially got word of Zulema after we saw a post of hers on Instagram where she reviewed certain products. We were so impressed we asked her to come on the show for Episode 14, and now she’s back again!

Topicals

We decided to continue this discussion to get a great idea of some of Zulema Lino’s product recommendations. Some of her favorites include transdermal creams for topical use. She especially enjoys CBD versions and likes transdermals because they absorb deep into the skin and reach the bloodstream. She had a concussion previously and used transdermal cream to help alleviate the pain without the use of any other pharmaceuticals. Topicals are also great because they won’t get users high and won’t create issues with users who need to worry about drug testing.

Edibles

Some of Zulema’s favorite products also include edibles like gummies include WYLD. They use a lot of natural fruit and natural terpenes. This gives you the effects you’re really looking for. Her favorite is their pomegranate flavor. Zulema also really likes the 1-to-1 dark chocolate bars from OMG THC. She is avoiding Tylenol, Advil, and other meds. She relies as much on THC and Cannabis as possible to treat her ailments and disorders and recommends the same.

Flower & Dabs

When it comes to flower, Zulema prefers a CBD-heavy flower. Usually a 2-to-1 ratio with CBD on the heavier end. With CBD flower, you can function easier while being calm and collected.

When it comes to dabs, Zulema prefers solventless products. However, not everyone has that as an option. It can also be expensive. When it comes to concentrates, she feels the device is very important. She enjoys the Huni Badger vaping device and claims it works well with thicker batters, rosin, etc.

Either way, when she smokes cannabis, everything seems wonderful and takes effect quickly. It acts quickly. However, if she’s looking for a more long-term effect, she’ll go with edibles. Frequently, she’ll take both.

Cannabis Science – Fibromyalgia

Today we’re talking about Fibromyalgia and how cannabis may prove to be a useful tool in treating the painful symptoms of this disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.” Furthermore, some researchers believe that Fibromyalgia “amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain and spinal cord process painful and nonpainful signals.” In other words, the disease messes with your brain and your nerves, sending pain sensations out of control. However, not much is conclusively know about Fibromyalgia. As a result, it has been quite difficult to treat, and many of those afflicted suffer constantly. There is currently no cure.

But, a small study may show promise. One that’s considered the “gold standard” of studies – the double-blind. It was performed in Brazil and they took a strain of White Widow cannabis. The THC and terps were extracted into a tincture and 17 women who were studied were given 4 drops per day and were given a questionnaire to determine how they were feeling before and after the dosage. They reported decreases in pain and symptom alleviation. Additionally, they reported a positive increase in mood. In the end, the cannabis group reported a significant improvement in their overall physical and mental wellbeing.

Cannabis Chronicles – Misconceptions

A very common complaint is the price of cannabis. They discuss the markups that the dispensaries charge. However, most people simply don’t understand the math involved and the regulations involved to bring things to market. For example, cannabis companies have a ton of regulations on the way things operate. Very oppressive and strict regulations hike up the costs of doing simple tasks that would otherwise be less expensive or non-existent. But that’s not the worst part.

Unlike other businesses, cannabis companies are unable to write off certain expenses that most other businesses would be able to claim on their taxes, thereby reducing their net profit and reducing the amount in taxes they have to pay. This is due to the fact that cannabis is still illegal at the federal level. Furthermore, the laws are so backward that you could actually lose money in the business and still owe taxes to the Federal Government… for an activity they deem illegal. Only expenses directly related to the production of the product can be written off against the bottom line. In other words, you can’t write off any marketing costs, sales costs, accounting costs, etc. This misconception causes many customers to get upset and look to the black market.

Another misconception is that the most important part of the cannabis plant is the THC content of the plant or product. It’s basically the only thing most buyers care about. However, the combination of terpenes in the plant makes a huge difference. In fact, strains with smaller THC concentrations with higher terp concentrations can actually hit you harder. The same is true for CBD tinctures like those produced by Experience Premium Cannabis.

Finally, we come to the misconceptions about oil color. Many people believe that darker oils are impure or lack quality. Many people believe the lighter the oil, the more pure the product is. However, that’s simply not the case. Just as THC isn’t everything, full-spectrum oils will contain more aspects of cannabis and offer additional benefits. As a result, the oil will be darker. But color isn’t everything. Ultimately, it’s about feeling, flavor, and results. And of course, the overall benefit you receive.

Hash it Out – Anthony McCrary
Anthony went to JFK College of Law and was the commissioner in Solano county for the Juvenile Justice Commission. While Anthony McCrary may not know much about the cannabis industry, he’s a pro when it comes to diversity. After all, he built his entire company around the concept. According to Anthony, the legal cannabis industry was built on the backs of black and brown people. After all, many of them have suffered in jails and prisons and dealt with the ramifications of that stigma for years. In fact, many around the country still do to this day. Meanwhile, industrious entrepreneurs are taking advantage of this new legal market while these minority groups are left in the dust. Furthermore, there has been a severe lack of diversity in the cannabis industry from day one. And we know. We’ve discussed this before with Frank Hawkins and other podcast guests.

Currently, less than 1% of dispensaries are owned by African Americans. A lot of this has to do with economic exclusion, lack of large capital, and a lack of business mentorship. Meanwhile, more and more are being incarcerated at rights much higher than the rest of the population. However, the cannabis industry has taken notice of this and more companies are working to change the diversity issues faced in the industry. Anthony McCrary does his part to focus on bringing these issues to the forefront of dialogs and making the uncomfortable comfortable.

Today we’re talking about Delta 8 THC – a compound being hailed as the “legal” THC. According to Weedmaps, Delta 8 THC provides a smooth high with no paranoia. It’s no wonder people are excited about it. Delta 8 THC is a naturally-occurring minor cannabinoid that occurs in the cannabis plant. However, unlike Delta 9 THC, Delta 8 THC is only in the plant in trace amounts. The main difference between the two comes down to one little molecule. As the name implies, Delta 8 THC has a molecular bond on the 8th chain. This molecular difference changes how Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC bind to the brain.

Delta 8 THC is about 2/3 as potent as Delta 9. However, because of the different places that each chemical binds to, you get a different effect. As a result, mood can be impacted. Additionally, serotonin reuptake can change. As a result of these differences, users commonly report they don’t get as high. However, they do report a more calming effect from Delta 9. Many people can also focus and relax without being too high. In other words, it’s very mild but can be highly effective.

Again, Delta 8 THC is produced in very small quantities in the cannabis plant. With that said, why is it suddenly all the rage? Why is it the talk of the town? And where is it all coming from if it only found in trace amounts? The majority of the Delta 8 THC available is actually derived from other cannabinoids. Typically, people are taking CBD from hemp and converting it with sulfuric acid with acetic acid.

Is It Really Legal?

Now, the big question comes to this… If it’s a form of THC and it gets you high, is it legal? Well, that’s complicated. According to the U.S. Federal Government, the only chemical in the cannabis plant that’s illegal is Delta 9 THC. Therefore, Delta 8 is technically legal according to a loophole in the Farm Bill. However, the DEA may attempt to outlaw Delta 8 derived from CBD. In fact, they issued an interim ruling in 2020 stating that any THCs that are synthesized are illegal. On the other hand, that’s still left up to interpretation. In other words, it’s still quite complicated.

Additionally, a new vaping bill is coming into effect at the end of March. After March 28th, you can no longer ship CBD or Delta 8 THC via UPS, FedEx, or the US Post Office. Therefore, it appears things may get even more complicated. Furthermore, a lot of people stand to lose a lot of business and a lot of money. As a result, it’s reasonable to assume more industries will be driven into underground black markets which have, ONCE AGAIN, been created directly by the government’s failure to understand the human condition. For now, these restrictions will only create shipping issues and you will apparently still be able to purchase these products in stores. However, this could complicate things for product developers.

How About Nevada?

So, is it legal in the State of Nevada? Again, it’s complicated. The state recently changed its laws regarding Delta 8. However, on July 1st, 2020, they changed the wording and classification of what “THC” is. They now classified anything with those isomers as THC. Therefore, Delta 8 will fall into the “controlled” category and will likely be treated like similar cannabis products in the state.

Cannabis Science

Today we’re talking about opioid death rates and their inverse correlation with the proximity of legal cannabis dispensaries. For those who haven’t noticed, the United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. Thousands of people die every year from opioid overdoses. In fact, according to the CDC, over 750,000 people have died of opioid overdoses since 1999. Additionally, two out of every 3 overdose deaths in the United States involved the abuse of opioids.

Furthermore, more than are 2,000,000 US citizens are considered opiate addicts. Worse yet, that estimation was taken in 2016. We’re 5 years out from that figure. It’s likely that figure has only increased over time. In fact, nearly 75% of adults polled know someone who is addicted to opiates of some kind. Whether oxycodone, oxycontin, heroin, fentanyl, or worse, things are out of control. And it’s destroying families and lives all over the country.

Recently, a study by the British Medical Journal showed an apparent reduction in opioid deaths where legal cannabis dispensaries were located. Interestingly and despite naysayers and puritanical fears by doomers, counties with dispensary access appeared to lower the rate of opioid deaths.

Hash It Out!

Today we interview Maxine Fensom, owner and CEO of Las Vegas Cannabis Tours. For an amazing Las Vegas cannabis experience, Las Vegas Cannabis Tours is all the rage. According to their site, they begin your tour at “the #1 dispensary in Las Vegas, where we start with a shot. From there we whisk you away to the best cannabis spots in Vegas!” They offer various packages which include everything from dispensary stops, cannabis-inspired art stops, sampling, glass blowing, gift bags, food, helicopter rides, and more! Additionally, she offers various related fashion items that she offers to tour participants.

Entrepreneurial by spirit, Maxine Fensom started the business after attempting to find a new endeavor where she could enjoy herself and be happy while working on building her own company. Her first tour was with two professors who went for the exclusive Ganja Tour package. From there, the business took off. Maxine says that she sees a diverse group of people taking her tours. Both locals and tourists are frequent participants.

Nugs of Knowledge

Today, we’re talking about landrace cannabis strains. Many older people will tell you that cannabis was way different back in the day. Much weaker and less potent, both in smell and quality. And they’re right! Just how farmers will breed different fruits and vegetables to have desirable properties, so too do cannabis growers. That’s how we got so many different strains and varieties of cannabis with different flavors, smells, and effects.

But what is a landrace strain? A landrace strain is one that was taken long ago from their original regions. They are named after the regions in which they were developed. Interestingly, botanists are able to trace every single strain back to a single plant variety. It was developed back in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These were the original wild pieces. From there it spread to China, South Africa, the Caribbean, etc. These were pure sativas and pure indicas. Additionally, each strain grew in different environments which allowed them to take on their properties.

When Canada legalized cannabis on the federal level, many investors believed things would change for the better. And that’s no surprise. After all, with the emerging industry now coming into the mainstream, it only made sense that more money would flow into it. As a result, investors flocked in to invest in Canadian cannabis stocks. However, the bubble inevitably burst and many people lost their money.

Now, what we’re seeing in the US is another round of investors flocking to cannabis stocks. But why? Well, Joe Biden’s election is the reason many people believe that this happened. Additionally, cannabis legislation initiatives are beginning to surface in the US Federal Government as well.

When it comes to the US legislative branch, Chuck Schumer recently called for the decriminalization of cannabis. Additionally, he stated that his goals were to not only prevent future arrests and incarceration but to “help lift up the victims who were unfairly targeted by the War on Drugs.” Schumer is now the chief sponsor for the Marijuana Freedom and Opportunity Act. This new legislation would federally decriminalize cannabis and create a trust fund to support women and minority-owned businesses.

There are also talks of creating a cannabis banking system. The SAFE Banking Act is a piece of cannabis legislation that aims to avoid the cash-only problem the legal cannabis system is currently faced with. This bill passed in the House with support from multiple Republicans as well as Democrats. Now, the bill’s hands are in the Senate and then it can be signed into law. There are also other local initiatives to solve the cannabis banking crisis. In Nevada, the state has recently begun looking into closed-loop cryptocurrencies and integrated tracking systems. In fact, they recently contracted with two companies to beta test just such a system.

So, now that the Federal Government is showing signs of interest in legalization, cannabis stocks are booming again. They are currently on the rise as investors continue to pick up more and more shares. In fact, many have increased by 7% or more. Looking at all of these stocks, it could be a scary scenario. For example, it could do exactly what happened in Canada. Or it could continue to rise as cannabis legislation in the United States progresses toward legalization and regulation. As always, only time will tell.

Cannabis Science – PTSD

Today we’re talking cannabis and PTSD. PTSD is short for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Frequently, symptoms of PTSD arise after experiencing or witnessing a traumatizing event of some kind. Most often, members of the military exhibit signs and symptoms of PTSD. However, normal everyday citizens can experience them after car wrecks, violent encounters,

PTSD is pretty common. It can trigger traumatic memories, depression, anxiety, and even violence. Currently, medication treatments are limited to antidepressants. However, only 11% of medication protocols of this type are effective. Now, a new alternative may have been found in the use of the cannabis plant. Interestingly, PTSD has shown to damage the endocannabinoid system.

To help better understand the relationship between PTSD and cannabis, researchers have reviewed five recent studies. Currently, most observations are simply anecdotal evidence. However, in 2020, a new study dealt with how cannabis and PTSD really relate to one another. One shows how cannabis could reduce fear response to threats. Another showed that the plant’s cannabinoids could play a role in extinguishing traumatic memories.

Today we interview musician, co-host of A&E’s Bad Ink, and RSO enthusiast Rob Ruckus. Rob Ruckus got into the cannabis industry because of his passion for Rick Simpson Oil. And he got into RSO because he had multiple close friends and family suffer from cancer within a short period of time. Finally, he decided to look into a way to help his friends and family stop dying from the disease. Now, Rob is a huge fan and proponent of the medicinal qualities of RSO and shares his knowledge with as many people as possible.

Rob tried to reach people to tell them about whole plant oils and the values they can provide. However, he’s had trouble promoting the value of RSO because the Las Vegas cannabis industry is purely profit-driven. Consequently, it is quite difficult to convince dispensaries to sell and promote RSO, as creating quality product has little financial incentive. For now, there are no collectives that people who are only looking for medicinal benefits.

Rob explains that everything on the planet with a spine has an endocannabinoid system. Therefore, cannabis use can help by boosting the immune system. Up until recently, cannabis use has been illegal and heavily stigmatized. Consequently, hemp growing was also made illegal in the US because it was too difficult for authorities to see the difference between the two plants. As a result, we no longer used hemp to feed to animals. That lack of the healing properties of hemp and cannabis lead to a deficit in feeding our endocannabinoid systems.

Depression has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. In fact, nearly 20% of the adult population has been diagnosed with depression. Frequently, prescription drugs are touted as the solution to the problem. However, there are a number of issues and consequences associated with these drugs. First off, some of these prescription medications may take time to take effect. It could take days, weeks, or even months for someone suffering from depression to see a positive lift in mood. Additionally, depression medications can have both mild and severe side effects. Patients may experience agitation, anxiety, drowsiness, sedation, and insomnia. RX meds may even cause suicidal ideation.

With cannabis’s recent push into the medical spotlight, many people have attempted to use cannabis to treat their depression symptoms. Some have had great success. However, others have an adverse reaction when their thought patterns go haywire. Consequently, this can lead to feeling worse and result in increases in depression symptoms.

That’s why the University of New Mexico’s Medical Cannabis Research Fund performed an experiment tracking cannabis flower’s application for treatment of depression. The results were definitely noteworthy. The researchers teamed up with an app called Releaf. Outcomes of 1,800 people who reported nearly 6,000 different sessions using cannabis. Shockingly, 98% of participants experienced lessened symptoms of depression using cannabis. Interestingly, results were not affected between the use of Indica and Sativa. The amount of THC seemed to be the correlating factor in symptom relief.

However, some cannabis users did report negative results as well. Depression can increase. Up to 20% of users experienced negative side effects. But, 64% felt happy, peaceful, optimistic, and relaxed. In other words, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The findings suggest that, at least in the short term, the vast majority of users experience antidepressant effects.

Ben and Stephanie interview Dr. Ruth Fisher, author of The Medical Cannabis Primer. Ruth shares her story of how she went from cannabis skeptic to cannabis advocate. Cannabis Science – THC-P

You may not know it but your body actually has a system designed to process cannabis. Yes! Really! It’s called the endocannabinoid system. According to Wikipedia, the endocannabinoid system is “a biological system composed of endogenous lipid-based retrograde neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors and cannabinoid receptor proteins that are expressed throughout the vertebrate central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.”

So far, scientists have discovered two main receptors in the systems… They are known as CB1 (in the brain), and CB2 (in the body). Every time we discover a new cannabinoid, we learn more about the cannabis plant. The newest discovery is THC-P.

Scientists tested its ability to bind to the cannabinoid system. It seemed to affect the mice tested in a more intense way than standard THC (aka Delta 9). In fact, it binds around 30X better than THC to the CB1 receptors, and 6X better to the CB2 receptors. However, we are not sure how THC-P affects humans. Additionally, we’re not sure if the increase in binding potential necessarily relates to the potential for greater strength of the chemical. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the human application of THC-P soon.

Nugs of Knowledge – Newbies

This week, we discuss cannabis newbies – those people who have yet to try cannabis but may be canna-curious. New cannabis users will likely have 3 options to try. Flower, edibles, or extracts/concentrates. Depending on the strains of cannabis a user consumes, they may experience different results. Sativa and Indica deliver different results.

For those who are new to cannabis, the best practice is to start small and work your way up. Flower and extracts will kick in faster so it’s easier to know how strong of a sensation you’ll feel during your high. However, edibles take longer to kick in. In fact, some may take hours to feel. Therefore, it is best to start with a small dose. If necessary, you can always take more later on or at a later date. But you can’t take less. So be smart and be cautious. After all, you wouldn’t try alcohol for the first time by drinking half a bottle.

Today we interview Dr. Ruth Fisher; author of The Medical Cannabis Primer. Ruth Fisher is an economist with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Additionally, she is the co-founder of CannDynamics – a technology company dedicated to making cannabis metrics meaningful and accessible for medical cannabis patients.

Ruth Fisher was introduced to cannabis in college. However, it wasn’t really her thing; mainly because she bought into the stigma. After doing a lot of work in the healthcare industry, Ruth became aware of cannabis use for medical patients. It came to prominence in the 90s when AIDS patients began using it. Again though, she doubted that cannabis did anything besides getting them high.

Later on, she changed her mind after her brother began suffering from MS. After his neurologist recommended he look into cannabis use to treat his pain, Ruth reconsidered her position. However, she noticed that both doctors and patients were operating blindly. There was little information available for both parties. So her brother asked for her opinion. Ruth began to delve into the world of cannabis and she completely changed her tune.

Cannabis Science – CBD & Epilepsy

Today in our science segment, we talk about CBD’s effect on Epilepsy. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and it affects people of all ages. Abnormal electrical activities in the brain result in a sensory disturbance. This disturbance inevitably ends in seizures. It is usually diagnosed after a person has had at least two seizures that were not caused by another known medical condition.

Nearly one in three people who suffer from Epilepsy are classified as having drug-resistant Epilepsy. However, CBD use may help! Fortunately, new studies indicate that CBD usage can result in a decrease in seizure frequency. Additionally, there are no adverse effects of using CBD. But that’s not all. CBD use has shown to heal some adverse effects caused by traditional medicines used to treat Epilepsy. Finally, if a patient must continue taking Rx medications, CBD may reduce the dosage or frequency in which such meds are consumed. Over the years, public views of cannabis use have continued to change. At the start of the new millennium, support for cannabis law reform hovered in the low 30% of public approval. Now, nearly 88% of the public say they support some kind of cannabis law reform. In fact, cannabis law reform is one of the most universally accepted movements in the country. Support crosses gender, age, and political party lines. The shift in views on cannabis use and the increase in approval rating continues to grow as more and more states successfully implement policy.

However, one of the initial topics which were not addressed was racial injustice related to past failed drug policy. John Hudak believes this was an initial failure. Some states got it better than others, but none have gotten it completely right. On the other hand, John doesn’t recommend throwing the baby out with the bathwater. After all, that’s not how good public policy works… most of the time.

This week, we discuss dabbing 101. Ah, dabbing… the flash vaporizing of cannabis concentrates. There are a variety of tools you can use to dab. Frequently, the apparatus used to dab is called a rig. This helps to vaporize cannabis. Wax, rosin, oils, and more are used in dab rigs.

Dab rigs have an element called a nail. The nail is heated up with a torch and then a tiny bit of cannabis concentrate is added to the nail. Usually, a very small crumb-sized dab is used in the rig. Upon vaporization, you inhale the smoke. This is not for low-dose users. Dabbing is one of the most efficient ways to consume large concentrations of cannabis in a short amount of time.

Type 1 Diabetes is the version that occurs naturally in the body. It has nothing to do with a poor diet or an unhealthy lifestyle. However, a poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle may exacerbate the symptoms.

THC has shown that it can modulate and regulate TH1 and TH2. When out of whack, TH1 and TH2 can encourage diabetes to have worse symptoms. TH1 may be in excess and TH2 is lacking. CBD treated mice showed an improvement in diabetic symptoms when using CBD. In fact, CBD showed it enriched the TH2 environment in the system. But just how much does CBD help treat Diabetes?

It turns out that 86% of mice studied developed Type 1 diabetes in an average of 14 weeks. However, CBD-treated mice only developed diabetes at a rate of 30%. Additionally, it took upwards of 20 weeks (or 6 weeks longer) for symptoms to occur.

Today we’re talking with John Hudak; an author and policy analyst with the Brookings Institute. John Hudak is deputy director of the Center for Effective Public Management and a senior fellow in Governance Studies. His research focuses on campaigns & elections, legislative-executive interaction, and cannabis policy.

John’s 2016 book, Marijuana: A Short History, offers a unique, up-to-date profile of how cannabis emerged from the shadows of counterculture and became a mainstream public policy issue. In it, he describes why attitudes and policy have changed. Additionally, John talks about what those changes mean for cannabis and its future place in society. Cannabis captured John Hudak’s imagination later in life.

In the 1930s, the head of the new Bureau of Narcotics, Harry Anslinger, began a crusade against cannabis. A teetotaler, prior head of the Bureau of Prohibition, and avowed racist, Anslinger determined that it would behoove him and the country if he could stop the moral decay of society. His ability to divide the country by race was something he was quite fond of. Despite cannabis being used and recognized as a medicine, not many people know much about it. Additionally, not much was known about it or its existence.

According to John Hudak, Anslinger saw cannabis as a scapegoat for crime, corruption, and the fear of non-white members of society. In fact, he was quite aggressive in his crusade against cannabis. And his efforts would completely shift the public view of the plant. His work would lead to the drug war and to many decades of poor public policy which would destroy a number of lives.

Later, President Nixon would take up his torch and further his cause. Nixon then convinced the country that drugs would destroy the stability of the nation. He used cannabis as a tool to get rid of anyone who defied or disagreed with him. This included Jews, psychiatrists, hippies, and more. Now, the U.S. government had a legal tool to silence and imprison anyone that spoke out against them.

They include sprays, oils, ointments, balms, lotions, transdermal patches, and more. According to chemist Noel Palmer, THC will not permeate into the skin and into the bloodstream. But they may be completely clueless when it comes to smoking. Therefore, this helpful segment is for the newbs.

A bowl is part of a pipe. The part you fill with cannabis. A hole and mouthpiece deliver airflow that helps the flower burn. Glass pipes with a wide bowl are best. But why use a bowl instead of a joint? First of all, you get to smoke exactly how much you want. Second, cannabis is cheaper in bulk. When you buy flower in bulk, you save on purchasing multiple prerolls that have been marked up for their convenience factor. Thirdly, you don’t have to roll or prep anything. Finally, you can avoid ingesting a number of carcinogens.

So how do you load the bowl? Loosely pack the bowl with flower. Lightly at the bottom and tightly at the top. Use a small bud on the bottom to keep ground flower from falling through the bowl. Some pipes may have a second air channel called a carb. You will place your thumb over this hole and take the hit. Then, take your finger off the hole to get all the remaining smoke.

Today in our science segment, we talk about the “gateway drug” myth and the science that disproves it. Despite these myths being drilled into our heads for decades, it turns out there has been no proof that cannabis use leads to harder drug use. In fact, many studies prove the exact opposite is true.

The first study came after Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Colorado had legalized cannabis. After these cannabis legalization efforts, cannabis use increased significantly. According to the “gateway drug” myth, this increase in cannabis use should have translated into an increase in harder drug usage. However, hard drug use did not occur. In fact, in three of the four states, opioid addiction was actually lower than the national average. Additionally, smoking cannabis reduced the smoking of tobacco. Simply put, the corresponding spikes don’t exist.

Tom believes the Federal Government has lagged on legalization. Badly! As Tom says, it’s really hard to lobby when your lobby is illegal. In other words, there is prejudice and social engineering involved. After all, if the government can get a COVID vaccine created and issued within less than a year, how is it that the government can continuously claim more study is needed to prove the medical value of cannabis.

Miggy 420 got into the cannabis industry after attempting to collect signatures for medical cannabis legalization ballot initiatives. Miggy420 feels it is also an issue of money. At this point, he feels there is no argument left against keeping cannabis illegal. However, he attributes the lag in legalization to gerrymandering, social inequality, and racism.

This week, we discuss the terms Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid. But most importantly, we discuss how those terms are outdated. While they’re useful in describing the type of high one gets, the terms seem to have outlived their origins.

For example, when a strain is a “Sativa”, what people are referring to is a head high. However, “India” is associated with relaxation. And of course, a Hybrid had combined genetics from both with leanings toward one or the other.

Now, the cannabinoids and terpene profile best dictates the effects of the plant. In reality, now people should simply ask how a certain plant or product will make you feel. And check those labels for your cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Today in our science segment, we talk about CBD and arthritis in dogs. Canine osteoarthritis is an inflammatory condition marked by pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. Much like humans, arthritic conditions can leave our furry friends feeling lethargic, irritable, and reluctant to engage in strenuous activities. Lately, arthritis has become quite common in dogs. In fact, it’s now estimated that at least 20% of all dogs over the age of 1 are at risk of developing arthritis. Additionally, as dogs age, their risk of developing arthritis continues to increase.

However, a new study by the scientific journal PAIN has shown great promise in treating canine osteoarthritis. The Balor College of Medicine conducted the study. Published in September of 2020, this double-blind placebo-controlled study showed that CBD use proved to be beneficial in 9 out of 10 cases. You read that right! A 90% chance of success! Wow!

Apparently, dogs have very similar biological characteristics when it comes to osteoarthritis. Therefore, this study was initially performed to see how well CBD use would transfer to human applications. Researchers determined that liposome delivery proved to provide the highest quality relief.

This week, we talk about hemp and cannabis. Did you know that hemp and cannabis are the same species? It’s true. However, just like humans, we’re not all the same. In fact, “cannabis” is a genus. It has Cannabis Ruderalis, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Sativa.

Legally, hemp produces a very small amount of THC. Hemp doesn’t demand the level of attention required to produce THC-rich cannabis. Hemp is often used to produce food, clothing, and other industrial products. Interestingly, the 2018 Farm Bill only legalized CBD that comes from the hemp plant. As of now, cannabis-derived CBD is still not legally allowed. However, states with cannabis legalization do allow this form of CBD.

Today we talk about cannabis and prescription drug interactions. A recent 2020 study from Penn State addressed a variety of medication which may not work well in combination with cannabinoids. 57 total. This includes both medical and recreational cannabis.

Finally, it was stressed that the doctor-patient relationship is very important to maintain. Hash It Out! – Interview With Stephanie Shehan

Stephanie Shehan is the owner and editor of both Tahoe Cannabis Magazine and Vegas Cannabis Magazine. She helped found Vegas Cannabis Magazine in 2014. Then, Tahoe Cannabis Magazine started up three years later in 2017. Stephanie first got the idea to found a cannabis magazine while she was using Xanex prescribed by her doctor for a sleep disorder. Eventually, a friend of hers turned her on to cannabis oil and she began searching for further info. However, it was very difficult to find much reliable info on cannabis and the cannabis market.

Back in 2014, the Nevada cannabis market was just beginning to bud (excuse the pun). As a result, much of the market was still underground. It was difficult to gain interest in the magazine at first. Even at smoke shops and dispensaries, it was a challenge. In fact, some businesses suggested changing the magazine’s name to avoid bad press. However, Stephanie Shehan maintained her vision and stood strong by her idea.

Vegas Cannabis Magazine performs interviews of celebrities, cannabis company owners, product developers, and more. Additionally, they offer seasonal info, cooking and recipe info, art, music, budtender spotlights, and more. Stephanie noted that they really like to keep everything in the publication local. They’re also heavily focused on the medical aspects of cannabis usage. They’re big supporters of the Nevada cannabis industry and their goal is to help support their fellow industry professionals and non-profit organizations.

Nugs of Knowledge

This week, we talk about trichomes. They can be found on many types of plants. These are commonly seen in the form of hairs, especially on the cannabis plant. They store the terpenes, cannabinoids, and flavonoids found in cannabis. Trichomes protect the plant from bugs, wind, UV light, bacteria, and more.

Cannabis has three different types of trichomes. Some are visible to the naked eye. On the other hand, some are more difficult to see. Trichomes should not be confused with pistols. As the cannabis plant begins to flower, the glands begin to produce cannabinoids. Trichomes can be seen with a magnifying glass.

When trichomes are clear, they are not yet ready to be harvested. When they become cloudy, they are now at their best time for harvest. Later, trichomes may begin to develop an amber tone. If they are still a cloudy amber color, you can expect a powerful high. However, when they become fully amber, THC potency decreases by 80%. Therefore, most growers will avoid allowing too much time to pass. On the other hand, the plant now contains a large concentration of CBN which is also a desirable cannabinoid.

Cannabis Science

Today we talk about cannabis and MRSA. MRSA is a staph bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics. According to the CDC, nearly 5% of patients in hospitals are infected with MRSA. MRSA can cause blood and heart infections. Additionally, it can destroy bone.

Research dating back to the 1950s shows that cannabis has anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. Researchers have found that the major cannabinoids in the cannabis plant effectively fight MRSA. Previous and recent studies reveal that certain resistance mechanisms in MRSA have difficulty attaching to cannabinoids.

According to studies, Delta 9 THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, has no effect on MRSA when orally consumed. However, it can be a powerful medication when introduced to the body in other fashions. Many other chemicals in cannabis have shown promise in battling MRSA. These include CBN, CBD, CBG, and CBC.

Hash It Out! – Interview With RaRa Rivera

RaRa Rivera has been in the Nevada cannabis industry since 2015. Prior to her entrance into the cannabis industry, RaRa Rivera was a nurse, a traveling performer, and an herbalist. She got into cannabis at a young age and began using it as a sleep aid and relaxant. Later, she would develop a cannabis mom’s group after dealing with postpartum anxiety and depression.

RaRa Rivera’s main focus is on tea-related products. This occurred after RaRa moved to Texas where cannabis was still illegal at the time. She attempted to stop using smokable cannabis products but was once again having trouble sleeping. After a friend recommended sleepy time tea, she was amazed to discover it worked incredibly well. Soon after, she began to perform a ton of research on teas.

Then, she had a great idea. Combining tea and cannabis! According to RaRa, consuming cannabis tea is very similar to consuming an edible. RaRa believes that the best way to consume cannabis tea is by using oils. Additionally, she recommends combining it with fats like milk or half and half. 5mgs is a great amount to start with and move up from there.

RaRa also works on cannabis-assisted Reiki healing. According to RaRa, Reiki allows us to work on our energy center and work to unblock the crown chakra. Combining Reiki with cannabis allows practitioners to tap deeper into their energy selves.

Nugs of Knowledge

Micro-dosing is the process of using small doses of cannabis regularly to achieve your desired results. Most legal cannabis products on the market are dosed at 10mg. Some new users may experience a powerful result from this amount. However, other more experienced users may need more to induce the high they desire. Micro-dosing allows cannabis users to ingest small amounts in order to achieve results and benefits without experiencing the high.

Micro-dosing can help deal with pain, anxiety, and more. However, there is no specific dosage medically recognized as a microdose. Many experts recommend starting with 2.5mg to simply relieve symptoms.

In a few short years in the cannabis industry, they have been recognized among the most valuable persons in cannabis. After discovering the cannabis plant in college, they spent a decade in contract roles with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. After some time, they moved to Las Vegas. While there, they continued to work in project management and mobile application development.

Now known as My Hemp Fairy, it didn’t take Ayako long to start applying their background in public health toward an evolving environment. When Ayako stumbled into the medical cannabis industry in 2016, their natural curiosity for the plant and its medical applications took over. The cannabis analyst within was born out of an interest in understanding the terpene data that came with products sold in Nevada dispensaries.

From there came the search for allergen-free products to incorporate into the healing process. Interestingly, this focus came from their own allergen issues associated with coconut oil. Of course, anyone who knows about the cannabis industry and cannabis tinctures knows that coconut oil is prominently used in a vast array of products. OCD diagnosis usually involves repetitive behaviors that are uncontrollable or undesirable. Additionally, they may cause significant distress or problems in day-to-day life. Common forms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder may manifest in different ways. These include taboo thoughts, lack of control, anxiety, repeatedly checking things, excessive cleaning, and more.

Additionally, Bea and Ben discuss the application of cannabis to treat OCD. Apparently, smoking cannabis can help decrease OCD tendencies by half. This occurs within a period of 4 hours or less. Finally, the two talk about a helpful app that can help you track your cannabis use to share with your healthcare provider.

What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a common, chronic disorder in which a person has uncontrollable reoccurring thoughts and behaviors that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over. People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, may have symptoms of obsessions, compulsions, or both. These symptoms can interfere with all aspects of life, such as work, school, and personal relationships. The following information about OCD can be found on their website.

Obsessions are repeated thoughts, urges, or mental images that cause anxiety. Common symptoms include:

Fear of germs or contamination
Unwanted forbidden or taboo thoughts involving sex, religion, or harm
Aggressive thoughts towards others or self
Having things symmetrical or in a perfect order

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person with OCD feels the urge to do. These are done in response to obsessive thoughts. Common compulsions include:

Excessive cleaning and/or handwashing
Ordering and arranging things in a particular, precise way
Repeatedly checking on things, such as repeatedly checking to see if the door is locked or that the oven is off
Compulsive counting

Not all rituals or habits are compulsions. Everyone double checks things sometimes. But a person with OCD generally:

Can’t control his or her thoughts or behaviors, even when those thoughts or behaviors are recognized as excessive
Spends at least 1 hour a day on these thoughts or behaviors
Doesn’t get pleasure when performing the behaviors or rituals, but may feel brief relief from the anxiety the thoughts cause
Experiences significant problems in their daily life due to these thoughts or behaviors

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder & Cannabis

While there is no cure for OCD, there are ways to treat or manage it. Commonly, OCD can be treated in two ways. The first is psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy. Many times, subjecting Obsessive Compulsive Disorder sufferers to Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) may help combat their obsessions. ERP involves gradually exposing the OCD sufferer to feared objects or obsession and having them learn ways to resist the urge to engage in compulsive rituals.

The second way to combat OCD is through the use of medications. Frequently, these medications are powerful SSRI prescriptions. However, OCD can be also be treated with cannabis. The higher the concentration, the better the results tend to be. However, it appears that THC may only help in the short term. As of now, CBD may help treat OCD in the long term.

Finally, he discusses his vision for Las Vegas as a cannabis tourist destination.

About Tick Segerblom

Nevada State Senator Richard “Tick” Segerblom descends from a long line of legislators. In fact, Tick Segerblom is a fourth-generation legislator. Segerblom, a Nevada attorney, was instrumental in getting cannabis legalized in the state of Nevada, and continues to shape and monitor industry developments. He’s also a member of Freedom Leaf’s board of directors. He represented Las Vegas in the Nevada Assembly from 2007 to 2013 and as a State Senator from 2013 to 2017, earning a reputation quickly as a staunch Progressive on issues like equal rights and cannabis legalization.

As a product of the 1960s, Tick Segerblom saw cannabis use as a simple non-issue that was later turned into a vehicle for oppression and suppression by the state. As a consumer of cannabis, he knew there were little to no issues of concern when it came to legalization. However, he saw cannabis being treated similarly to Heroin, in regards to government classification. After involving himself in law and politics, he chose to make cannabis legalization his signature issue in 2013.

In addition to working as a lawyer, Tick has focused on improving opportunities and services for people in Southern Nevada. He believes Clark County should plan more deliberately for the kind of metropolis it wants to be in ten years. He aims to direct the government to improve Nevada residents’ daily lives. Additionally, he aims to tackle issues of diversity and environmental challenges while also nurturing newly-emerging industries like tech and cannabis sales.

In November of 2016, Nevadans overwhelmingly voted in favor of legalizing recreational cannabis. At that point, Tick Segerblom immediately began working to ensure the law was enacted as efficiently and as logically as possible. It was because of Tick’s efforts that cannabis dispensaries began to open for recreational business in less than eight months after the public referendum.

Tick lead Clark County into this new era, having already spent years in the legislature writing the bills that allowed cannabis innovators to plant seeds in Nevada. The Nevada cannabis industry has grown exponentially thanks to these regulations, which were inspired by studying best practices in California, Colorado, Arizona, and Washington. As a result, Nevada is now the gold standard for cannabis regulation.

However, Tick Segerblom doesn’t plan to stop his valiant crusade to get the plant to the people. Now, Tick had focused his passion for cannabis rights and legalization on Clark County. According to Tick Segerblom, “Las Vegas is America’s playground, and in order to maintain our status as the go-to place for adventurous celebrations, we need to make cannabis use an option in specially-designated businesses, parks, and venues.” Tick also believes that resort/hotels must be permitted to allow cannabis use on their property in order to make this dream a reality.

Additionally, Tick is dedicated to making sure that small Nevada cannabis companies remain players in the market. Thanks to Tick Segerblom and others like him, the Nevada cannabis industry now employs thousands of Nevadans, provides millions in tax revenue and the businesses themselves have been models for other states looking to explore cannabis legalization. As a result of Tick’s tireless efforts, we have safer streets, well-tested product, and a better system for the state of Nevada. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his tireless efforts.

Blackbird and the COVID Pandemic

During the start of the COVID pandemic, people began to quarantine in their homes a lot more. Consequently, this changed the way Blackbird did a lot of their business. Now, they had to deliver to more homes than dispensaries. Additionally, this caused an increase in hiring drivers to cover all the new orders and meet customer demand. In fact, this caused a 600% increase in deliveries.

Since the lifting of certain restrictions, people are returning to dispensaries. However, Jamal Barghouti notes that this has made a huge impact on the way people get their cannabis products. Now, the concept of cannabis delivery has completely changed in the minds of consumers. There are no longer lines around the corner with customers trying to get product at dispensaries. Now, they can remain in the comfort of their own homes. Ultimately, it showed what the industry is capable of and has answered some old questions of what the capacity for the industry truly is.

Blackbird is the largest cannabis delivery company in the state of Nevada. Raised in central California, Jesse Garza began his culinary career in the fast-food industry. A weird jumping-off point for a professional cannabis chef, but hey, we all have to start somewhere. Anyhow, he eventually took a job in food services at UNLV. It was there he discovered his love for cooking. With the encouragement of some established chefs, Chef Garza decided to take his career to the next level.

When Garza moved to Las Vegas he worked as an aspiring chef while attending the Art Institute. With those aspirations in mind, Garza got a job at Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa. While there, he worked for a number of restaurants including sports bars, chophouses, and more. With an undying passion for gourmet cooking, Jesse Garza began traversing the Strip, handing out resumes to any kitchen that would accept them.

Later, after working many unpaid hours, Garza, received a career-defining opportunity cooking at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. During his eight-year tenure there, Garza mastered all facets of food service. Working banquets of all shapes and sizes, room service, and managing an employee dining room, Jesse Garza rose to the position of sous chef at the hotel’s steakhouse, DJT, all by the age of 28.

Finally, Garza decided to make a life-changing career move; leaving his distinguished job at the Trump Hotel. After leaving in February 2019, Garza partnered with LA-based chef Joseph Joudi Saady. The duo opened Blume, a venture in Henderson where Garza could truly demonstrate his creativity and passion for fine dining while holding that coveted creative control over menu items. Once Blume was established, Chef Garza started working on his dream of doing private dinners in the Las Vegas and California areas which he gleefully does to this day.

Benjamin Bey of Soul D’licious Seasonings and Stephanie Magurno of THC Production, LLC talk cannabis and immigration – how working in the industry has affected the citizenship applications of US legal residents, the possible impact on green card renewals, and even how owning a cannabis company in the US could lead to citizens of foreign countries being denied entry into the US.

Immigration Status Issues

This topic arose after one of the staff members of THC Production, LLC actually ran into a problem getting her green card because she had a job in the legal cannabis industry. For example, anyone looking to get a green card who has dealt with the legal Vegas cannabis industry is still technically violating Federal Law. In other words, immigration laws relate to Federal Laws. Therefore, having anything to do with people who consume cannabis or work in the cannabis industry are technically violating the law.

As part of the immigration questionnaires, you are asked if you have had anything to do with illegal substances. Therefore answering honestly about your job or use of cannabis may disqualify you from getting a green card. Again, this was an issue for a person who had lived in the United States since she was 13 years old. In the end, she had many problems with her immigration and was unable to get her legal citizenship approved.

In fact, you may even be deportable if you have violated Federal law. This includes cannabis use or sales… even if it’s legal in the state. If the U.S. government decides that you have violated these rules, you’re are in violation of moral turpitude stipulations. They may even attempt to deport you during your green card application. Even worse, this can include patients with cannabis prescriptions! In fact, leaving the country can be tough if you intend to get back in. The government may try to deny your entry back into the U.S. In a state where cannabis is legal, it makes for muddy waters.

Apparently, there is a rumor floating around the internet about cannabis use in China dating back to 2700 BCE. However, being the super nerd she is, Bea quickly began to poke holes in these fallacies. There seemed to be hole after hole in the story. Consequently, Bea began her hunt for the truth.

First of all, the Qin Dynasty existed only briefly from 221 to 206 B.C.E. That’s 500 years off from these rumors. Quite a stretch, right? Secondly, this apparent cannabis use was reported during the time of Emperor Shennong. However, there never was a Chinese Emperor named Shennong. In fact, Shennong is a mythological Chinese and Vietnamese diety. Frequently, he is credited as the first Chinese emperor, but this is not verifiable. Additionally, some stories attribute him as having created ancient Chinese medicine, the plow, and being born with the head of a bull. Sounds legit, right?

However, there’s a reason this rumor is floating around. It’s likely that this tale is being combined with the previous discovery of a stash of cannabis in an ancient tomb. Nearly two pounds of cannabis plant material was unearthed in the Gobi Desert in 2008., according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany. The tomb likely belonged to a shaman. However, this factual finding has nothing to do with the tale floating around. This is the difference between facts and fallacies, and it’s important to sort out the truth from myth.

Fun Facts

Fun Fact #1 – Did you know that cannabis was legal in the United States for medical, recreational, and industrial purposes? It’s true! Originally, it was sold as a “patent medicine” and it wasn’t until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 required accurate labeling. However, cannabis was not actually regulated until the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. And not for the reasons you might think. In fact, this was done to regulate and suppress the Hemp industry. Cannabis was not actually outlawed until 1970. However, the Marijuana Tax Act hindered the legal use of cannabis in the U.S., as the government refused to issue many stamps. Thereby, they made use and proliferation illegal by proxy.

Fun Fact #2 – Did you know that in 1914, the first issues of Federal Reserve Notes in the $10 denomination were printed on hemp paper? Hemp was such a huge industry that they chose to print the hemp notes. In fact, it was one of the three major crops in production at the time.

Fun Fact #3 – The first deal arranged by a computer network involved cannabis. This occurred in 1972. Of course, the transaction did not occur online.

Fun Fact #4 – In mature cannabis markets, dispensaries outnumber many chain restaurants. For example, In Denver, dispensaries outnumber Starbucks 2 to 1. Additionally, McDonald’s is outnumbered 5 to 1! In Portland, Starbucks is outnumbered 2 to 1, and McDonald’s is outnumbered 9 to 1!

Ben and Stephanie talk about a lawsuit that recently concluded dubbed “World War Weed.” Cannabis is a highly-regulated industry and it is considered to be a “privileged industry” to operate within. Therefore, there are a select number of producers, dispensaries, growers, etc. who are recognized by the state.

Originally, the State of Nevada decided to release only 60 dispensaries statewide. This choice was based on population but there were not enough to meet demand. However, there was the option to add up to 64 more dispensary licenses. The debacle that followed would soon be dubbed “World War Weed.”

World War Weed

Each of these licenses has extreme value – in the multi-million dollar range. So, when the chance came to apply for these licenses, 127 companies applied. Some for multiple places in the state. In the end, 462 total applications came in, and the state-issued 61 different licenses. However, only 17 companies received these new licenses. Even worse, nearly half of those licenses went to only 4 companies. Talk about favoritism, right?

Well, a lot of people thought so too, and it got worse. At the time, the department of taxation was in charge of licensing, and per law, there were required to keep the names of the companies who won licensing rights a secret. This added fuel to the fire and made rumors and conspiracies take flight. Additionally, it seemed that many of these 17 companies had close ties to the Nevada Dispensary Association and had utilized the services of Conner & Conner.

All of this lead to a lawsuit and multiple subsequent lawsuits, dubbed World War Weed. As a result, dozens of companies filed suit against the Nevada Department of Taxation in 2018 after losing their bids to open recreational marijuana dispensaries, alleging unfair practices during the application process.

Most of these suites merged into one single case. Points brought up included putting licensing on hold, as the coronavirus pandemic was beginning to cause issues with the court system. A lack of diversity in the industry was also an issue. In fact, our guest Frank Hawkins of Nevada Wellness Center talked about this on Episode 3 of Soul D’Licious Infused. There were even accusations of board stuffing in order to win coveted diversity points on applications. Finally, plaintiffs claimed favoritism for publicly-traded companies. It was a huge mess.

As World War Weed drew to an end, a settlement was reached… for some of the parties involved. District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez rebuked the state for its handling of the process. Additionally, she found that the training of those who graded applications was insufficient. As a result, their failures led to poor evaluations and determinations. However, she decided that none of the licenses must change hands, and no business would be stripped of the newly issued licenses.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Gonzalez found that the Nevada Department of Taxation made no effort to verify owners, officers, or board members. Of course, this failure did not comply with the rules set forth in 2016. However, she did not single out any of these organizations.

The two discuss various publications and studies involving cannabis use and analyze a variety of sources for media bias and the public good. Finally, they talk about truths, half-truths, and sensationalism surrounding marijuana use.

With cannabis use becoming more mainstream, it’s important that we learn as much as we can about it. Both the good and the bad. If both contain tars and similar reactions, we need to know that. We deserve it. However, we find that even the most reputable organizations can twist data and mislead the public… sometimes not necessarily on purpose. After all, this kind of media sensationalism happens all the time. We’re here to set the record straight and get to the bottom of these recent cannabis health studies.

AHA’s Cannabis Study

Recently, the American Heart Association came out with a cannabis health study. The title of the article was Marijuana May Hurt Heart, More Research Needed, Report Finds. Yipe! That doesn’t sound very good… especially coming from the American Heart Association. However, like most scientific studies, media sensationalism gets in the way of the facts and findings.

According to this article, “Marijuana use could hurt the heart and blood vessels, according to a report that found no cardiovascular benefits to cannabis use and called for more research of the drug that is growing in popularity.” You’ll notice parts of the quoted section have been bolded. This is because these simple uses of words can be quite telling. The use of the word “could” suggest a negative association between cannabis use and heart health. However, the next part, “found no cardiovascular benefits,” immediately contradicts that by stating no correlation between cannabis use and heart health had been found.

Essentially, the article is making saying that because no positives were found, the potential for a negative is now assumed. In other words, they could be saying “we found no cardiovascular benefits to the wearing of blue baseball caps. Therefore, the potential to damage the heart and blood vessels is possible.” Of course, this makes little to no sense. Finally, they note that “more research” is necessary.

The Israeli Study

Ben and Stephanie also discuss an Israeli cannabis health study with 102 test subjects. According to an article published by the Jerusalem Post, “cannabis consumption by advanced cancer patients lightens symptoms and side effects, but may impair the success of immunotherapy.” This time, we have a directly defined positive. However, it comes with an apparent negative as well.

Immunotherapy is a breakthrough cancer treatment and method of treatment which uses the patient’s immune system to detect and attack cancer cells more effectively. In this study, they apparently found that more patients were likely to get sick and die while using cannabis. However, the study admits that this study was much too small to draw correct conclusions.

Drawing the Wrong Conclusions

It’s not to say that these claims may be untrue. However, correlation is not causation. And we must keep that in mind with studies of all types. Because of the Federal illegality of marijuana, cannabis health studies are very difficult to perform. Even when one does get approved, the number of individuals studied are often of little scientific significance. And they need to be! We need to know these things. People deserve to know what cannabis use can do to their bodies. Both the good and the bad. And the article even admits that.

When it comes to helping out cannabis newbies and enthusiasts, it’s important to listen and understand what their needs are. However, it’s even more important to know what you’re talking about. You have to keep educating yourself all the time. Occasionally, you may even need to play the role of “advisor” or “therapist”. It all depends on the customer and the situation.

It’s important to present a positive face for the industry and to be informed about new products, terpenes, cannabinoids, and more. Additionally, you have to deal with the constant changes happening in a budding industry. Laws are being updated regularly all over the country, and Nevada is no exception. This is true for both medical and recreational users. Mainly, a good budtender will ensure comfort and enjoyment; both with the product and the patient experience.

Finally, people assume that budtending is an easy job. However, that’s not exactly the case. Teamwork is vital and it’s important to stay on your toes… literally and figuratively. It’s extremely important to keep up with trends and get to know your customers. Above all, it’s important to redefine what it means to serve the community.

According to Bea, it’s all about the source. Biologically, cannabinoids help us regulate multiple parts of our bodies. This includes both endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. Additionally, has some tips for the audience. Bea recommends getting buds as sticky as possible. Finally, for the best results, avoid using your hands on buds. If you must, cool your hands down a bit.

Bea also discusses the FDA’s lack of approval for Cannabinoids (CBN) including THC, CBD, CBG, etc. This is tough to accomplish due to the federal illegality of the cannabis plant. In fact, some states have even prevented the use and sale of CBD. Consequently, studies cannot be performed on a national level.

In most cases, you cannot cross state lines with CBN-containing products. THC is the only CBN chemical proven to create a psychoactive effect. About Terpenes

There are a few basic things you need to know about terpenes. First off, terpenes are organic compounds responsible for creating unique aromas and flavors. Secondly, they’re found in fruits, saps, and plants all over the world.

Terpenes offer various tastes and smells. Some include pine, berry, citrus, mint, cinnamon, floral notes, and more. In other words, terpenes are the essential oils of our favorite plants. They have many uses and applications. As such, people desire them for varying reasons. Finally, terpenes may assist plants in warding off predatory pests. Additionally, they may even help attract pollinators.

Cannabis is rich in a variety of terpenes. In fact, terpenes have gained public awareness through the growth and education of medical and recreational cannabis. Stephanie Magurno of THC Production, LLC talks about recent headlines about COVID-19 and the apparent benefits that Cannabis may have on fighting the virus. She chose to do this because there are many misleading headlines being shared online and on the news. However, the study being referenced is often taken out of context. Stephanie’s goal is to give you the real deal and spread some knowledge about the relationship between COVID and cannabis.

Things to keep in mind. The article was published in the multidisciplinary journal PrePrints. First of all, this is not a peer-reviewed journal. In other words, this means that scientists and clinicians will not take the results and conclusions too seriously. Why? These are only preliminary research findings. Therefore, this should not be confused for a legitimate scientific study. Additionally, these types of early studies should be used to drive further research, rather than generating conclusions from them.

Secondly, all of the Canadian-based authors, including Dr. Igor Kovalchuk, CEO and controlling shareholder of the Alberta R&D company Swysh, has a conflict of interest. In fact, they disclose these at the end of the article. Consequently, we must take their findings with a grain of salt.

This experiment was performed solely in artificial cell culture models. Keep this in mind. In other words, no humans or animals were tested. At any point. Therefore, there is essentially nothing to back up any of their conclusions. Cannabis and CBD may be able to assist in the treatment of COVID-19. However, the evidence is not yet there to make these claims. Therefore, it’s best to take the finding with a grain of salt and not look for COVID cures in cannabis too early.

About Frank Hawkins

Frank Hawkins is a former professional football player. He was a running back who played for seven seasons in the NFL with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders from 1981-1987.

After retiring Frank spent time working in various ventures including real estate development for low-income housing. Frank Hawkins served on the Las Vegas City Council and was the first elected black official in the city. He served one four-year term, beginning in 1991. While in office, he was also a board member for the Las Vegas Housing Authority.

Later, he applied for a legal cannabis distribution license in Nevada. Once approved, he opened Nevada Wellness Center. He originally got into the business when medical marijuana was approved and then got into recreational as the initiative was approved. He is passionate about keeping the local Nevada cannabis industry in the hands of local owners helping support other minority-owned businesses.

Introduction of the Podcast

Episode #1: An introduction to Benjamin Bey of Soul D’licious Seasonings and an interview with co-host Stephanie Magurno of THC Production, LLC. The two introduce each other and talk about what the show will entail in the future. Stephanie gives a rundown of the products produced by her company including THC and CBD tinctures, Afghani Hash, chocolate edibles, infused gummies, and more.

Benjamin Bey established what would become Soul D’licious Seasonings in 2006. It all came together when Ben came from Los Angeles and started a Catering Business in Las Vegas NV.

After doing events in the greater Vegas Valley (such as The Taste of Sound & Soul, Culture Fest in Down Town Las Vegas, and Black History Month at the Springs Preserves), people started asking what it was that made our tasty dishes so delicious. Ben got together with his team and blended his seasonings and went to see Mr. Jimmy Banks at Jimmy’s Cheyenne Market to ask if we could demo our seasonings in his store. Mr Banks said yes.

After one year of people tasting our seasonings, Ben went back to Mr. Banks to see if we could start manufacturing and processing at Jimmy’s Cheyenne Market. Again, he said YES! After getting all of his permits, the rest was history.

For the last 10 years, Soul D’licious Seasonings has been serving Las Vegas, NV & Los Angeles, CA our seasonings & sauces.

An Introduction to Stephanie Magurno
First off, as the Controller for a small cannabis extraction company, Stephanie handles all accounting responsibilities. This includes AP / AR, GL and journal entries, bank reconciliation, and setting up the Chart of Accounts. Additionally, Stephanie prepares financial reports for auditing & tax filings. Finally, she manages payroll functions, designing and improving the cost accounting system for internal users, and using the data to determine pricing and business strategy.

What Everyone Thinks She Does: Is in the process of giving herself carpal tunnel from constantly being on the computer.

What She Actually Does: Runs the company day-to-day, plans production, develops partnerships, supervises the team, and formulates business strategy. Manages all of the company’s finances, bookkeeping, and costing.

Favorite Product: “The Vegan 1:1 Chocolate Bars are my favorite… no question. Our vegan chocolate is so delicious that all the non-vegans who try it love it. Taste is incredibly important to us, so we were the first production company in the state to infuse our products with distillate. This means when it’s infused it doesn’t taste like weed.
