Topics covered in this episode with Sophie Gervais include:

  • Eating disorder recovery
  • The impact of diet culture
  • Misconceptions about fitness
  • Why women should lift weights
  • Detaching exercise from weight loss
  • Embracing challenges as part of growth
  • How discipline creates freedom

Sophie is a Gut and Hormone Health Specialist & Personal Trainer who has been guiding her clients to their goals for nearly five years. She is passionate about helping young girls and women overcome an unhealthy relationship with food after spending years of her own life stuck in the mental prison that is disordered eating. Her education in the field began in her undergraduate years at Vanderbilt University, where she studied eating psychology and nutrition. During that time, she was also certified in the National Eating Disorder Awareness foundation’s Body Project certification program to support women’s relationships with their bodies.

Her interests progressed into physique and performance evidence-based training and nutrition while maintaining a positive relationship with food and one’s body (certifications through NASM). Her coaching centers on getting women out of the rut of under-fueling and over-training, out of the yo-yo cycle, and out of the mystery of how to fuel one’s body (blocking out all the noise out there!) while building a positive outlook towards nutrition.

Sophie also supports her clients who are interested in gut and hormone health. Her interest in this field started from her own experience with IBS, acne, and painful/irregular periods that she wanted to support holistically. Her approach to hormonal support and gut health focuses heavily on evidence-based lifestyle and nutrition approaches rather than excessive supplementation and overly restrictive methods. Some conditions Sophie works with include: IBS, IBD, bloating/indigestion, dysmenorrhea, PCOS, PMS, low thyroid, and chronic stress/fatigue. Please note, Sophie is not a medical professional and provides holistic support for these conditions within her scope of practice; please consult a medical professional for these conditions first.

Outside of coaching, Sophie is an animal-lover and enjoys spending her free time riding her horse and hiking with her pup. She has traveled and lived abroad extensively and loves getting to enjoy cuisines from all over the world. She loves spending time getting stronger in the gym, giving it her all at trivia nights, and exploring her home base in Nashville.

Ep. 109 with Rachel King

At just 24 years old, Rachel knew her substance use had surpassed just having fun on the weekends. It had grown into her primary coping mechanism that led her down a path of disconnection from self and the world around her. She hid her addiction for years, suffering in silence, while presenting an image of happiness, sheltered by her achievements and the facade of a normal life. Her recovery journey was on and off for almost 6 years until she found freedom through sobriety a few months before her 31st birthday. The pain of active addiction had finally come to head for her and outweighed the fear of change and a life without alcohol and drugs.

Now, Rachel is a dedicated sober and wellness coach who specializes in helping high-achieving individuals struggling with their relationship with alcohol. She integrates health and fitness into her coaching, viewing them as key pillars in both her own recovery and the journeys of those she helps. Rachel takes a progressive approach to alcohol, seeing substance abuse as a spectrum. She believes that you don't need to hit a dramatic “rock bottom” to make the choice to remove alcohol from your life. Whether you're exploring the benefits of an alcohol-free lifestyle or facing deeper struggles, Rachel supports her clients in breaking free from the toxic cycle of drinking. Through self-awareness, inner-child work, and rewiring the subconscious mind, she empowers them to create lasting change.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Rachel’s story
  • Why we don't need a "rock-bottom" to get sober
  • Alternative recovery roadmaps outside of AA / NA
  • Subconscious programming around alcohol
  • Inner child work
  • The connection between trauma & addiction
  • Replacing substances with new coping mechanisms
  • Helping others on their sober journey

"Today, 46 million Americans suffer from substance use disorder. Of those, 70% are employed. This costs the economy $81BN a year. Substance use disorder is impacting 2 out of 3 families. We are not doing enough to reach these employees and their families who are seeking care for a highly stigmatized and often shame filled chronic condition.

We believe that the existing approach to substance use disorder in the workplace is inadequate - this is not a sub-bullet condition and it deserves its own dedicated solution.

Sobrynth provides 24 x 7 assistance for employees and their families who are seeking support with immediate substance use disorder needs and for those employees who are sober curious. We marry that support with a recovery ready workplace strategy.

We understand that return to work is an integral part of a person’s journey, so as a core part of our services, we supply a world class sober Employee Resource Group framework. We know that a recovery friendly workplace is key to an employee’s successful sobriety journey. We help employers create that safe and trusting workplace.

Choosing to be sober today is personal. Sobrynth is here to help people figure out their own journey – at home and at work."

Broken beyond repair."

  • The story of The Phoenix

Scott Strode, sober for over 25 years, is the Executive Director of The Phoenix, a transformational nonprofit he founded in 2006. The Phoenix harnesses the power of connection to ignite a movement that’s changing how society looks at addiction and recovery. The Phoenix provides free programs both in-person and virtually, across the globe, including yoga, climbing, music, CrossFit, art, and more. The only cost to participate is 48 hours of sobriety. Scott says, “It might be the activity that brings someone in, but it’s the community of sober friendships that keeps them coming back.” This spark of hope for recovery, that Scott himself experienced, has continued to grow and help thousands rise from addiction. Not limited to those in recovery, The Phoenix movement is for anyone who has been impacted by substance use disorder — because the solution to the addiction crisis lives in all of us. This is our movement!

Pamela Rueda

Recovery Mentor | Speaker | Latina Mental Health Advocate

Born in Mexico, Pamela survived armed violence at a young age. Upon moving to the U.S., she struggled with cultural uprooting and immigration trauma. • The benefits of yoga for recovery
  • Potential harms of the wellness industry
  • The story of Eat Breathe Thrive

Chelsea Roff is the Founder and Director of Eat Breathe Thrive. A yoga therapist, researcher, and educator, she has spent nearly a decade pioneering integrative health programs for people with mental health challenges.

In 2011, Roff offered the first Yoga for Eating Disorders program to clients at a treatment center where she had once been treated for anorexia. This later became the heart of Eat Breathe Thrive: a seven-week program that combines yoga, meditation, and psychoeducation to help people recover from eating disorders. Two years later, she raised $50,000 in fifty days to kickstart Eat Breathe Thrive. Since its inception, she has brought the program to scale in thirty-two U.S states and seven countries.

Prior to her work in the charitable sector, Chelsea worked as a researcher and grant writer in a psychoneuroimmunology laboratory. Her early research focused on how yoga affects the immune systems of people with HIV/AIDs and cancer. She is currently overseeing a multi-study research initiative on yoga in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders, which includes two randomized controlled trials.

In 2020, Chelsea took on an additional role as Director for the Give Back Yoga Foundation UK. She is currently spearheading an initiative to bring therapeutic yoga programs to scale in healthcare systems in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe. Chelsea is an avid swimmer and triathlete, and in her spare time studies Arabic and travels in her campervan.

  • The gifts of recovery
  • The importance of having a purpose
  • 3 mindset shifts in early sobriety
  • Jeannine's "spin snacks"

Jeannine Coulter's story is a powerful and inspiring journey of transformation and redemption. For fifteen years, Jeannine battled with addiction, leading to multiple arrests, homelessness, finally spending her last days of shooting meth and heroin in a literal doghouse before getting sober in January of 2015. Today, Jeannine is a force to be reckoned with and is a successful entrepreneur, a popular TikTok creator, and co-host of the popular recovery podcast, "Chasing Heroine." Less than three weeks after getting sober, she started teaching at a fitness studio that would transform her life and eventually bought that same studio at four years sober. Business exploded during Jeannine’s ownership and she recently sold it for double what she paid for it, sparking her interest in entrepreneurship and creating a community. Jeannine is on a mission to help addicts transform their deepest pain and shame into meaning, purpose, and gratitude. Jeannine's message is clear: addicts in active addiction should never feel left behind.

The title of this episode is inspired by a quote Jeannine shared during the conversation that allowed her to shift her mindset from one of shame and regret to one of immense gratitude:
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more." -Melody Beattie

Dawn Nickel, PhD – or “Mama Dawn” as she is affectionately known in the women’s recovery space, is passionate about redefining recovery, ending the shame and stigma around it, and ensuring that women are supported to find and follow individualized pathways and patchworks of recovery. A survivor of intimate partner violence and cancer and with over 35 years of recovery from substance use, Nickel currently identifies as being in active recovery from workaholism and the patriarchy. In her professional role as a health policy researcher and consultant, Nickel focuses on how best to support women who experience substance use disorders, mental health issues and related life issues.

She and her daughter Taryn Strong (also in recovery from substance use and various life challenges) “accidentally” started a worldwide women’s recovery movement called She Recovers when they started a Facebook page of that name in 2011. Since then, literally hundreds of thousands of women have been introduced to the She Recovers philosophy, approach and community. Nickel’s firm belief that recovery is a daily practice, coupled with her commitment to paying her recovery forward, inspired her to write this book.Links & resources mentioned in the episode:

Peg O’Connor, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of her sobriety because of the concept of a “higher power,” she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her latest book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, 2022).

Dr. O’Connor is regularly published in trade journals and writes a column, “Philosophy Stirred, Not Shaken,” for Psychology Today, which has nearly 2.3 million total views online and select columns have appeared in the print publication. Her expertise has been featured on BBC’s Free Thinking and Canadian Public Radio’s On Drugs podcast, as well as in print and online publications ranging from The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Cosmo and Marie Claire to Vice and Salon. She has been invited to present on addiction and recovery at some of the country’s most prestige universities, in addition to workshops and talks in church basements, classrooms, community centers, and treatment centers.

Jen Gilhoi (she/her/hers) shed the shame around alcoholism on July 28, 2014, when she first sought help to end her addiction.
