Hungry2Live: Recent Episodes

Rachel Freeman

Hungry2Live is about Human Connection over stigma, taboos and traumas that we were told to never share. While I live my life thru the lens of recovery, I will be interviewing humans from all walks of life who have become empowered by overcoming some sort of challenge that has helped shape them into who they are today. It is titled, Hungry2Live because after being in recovery for anorexia and exercise bulimia, the only thing that was constantly present was my hunger to survive, tell my story and remind people, that a challenging moment in one’s life, is not the end, but rather the beginning to something great! Women and men alike have had to break barriers when gender bending societal norms. Told to keep quiet and keep going despite personal battles. Providing a space and having a conversation while respecting boundaries as a human, and protecting their story is my number one priority.Sit back, listen and stay hungry for your dreams! On today’s episode, Rachel speaks with Brandon Mendenhall. From a young age, Brandon was told he was not going to be able to do much. He was born with cerebral palsy. This affected his fine and gross motor skills. It also impacted his speech.  Being bullied at school because he was different, Brandon began to feel depressed. He turned to music to help him cope. By picking up a guitar, he helped rehabilitate movement and his fingers. While no one in LA wanted to hire someone like him for their band, Brandon created his own, The Mendenhall Experiment. As you can imagine, the process of building a band around someone with cerebral palsy was not easy. There were moments of life and death. Drugs, rock-bottom and a suicide attempt. However, Brandon never gave up on his dream. And his band plays all over the United States. He has even shot an award winning documentary, with Munky from KORN.  He has played on the same stages as, Def Leppard, Three Days Grace, Taking Back Sunday, The Pretty Reckless, and Seether. Brandon is an inspiration.

"How do you explain to your parents, like I plan on making a living by drawing people's faces on my face. Like how do you broach that conversation with your parents?" -Martine Beerman

This week I talk with Martine Beerman. Martine has 1.9 million followers on TikTok, 54,000 followers on Instagram and a Snapchat show that is in its third season with a quarter of a million followers. As a first generation woman, right off the bat she has a story to tell. Martine has come from a line of people who did not start out in America, with the opportunities that a lot of us have had.

She came to America in high school, and went straight from high school to college. Her parents wanted her to have the normal go to college, get a job, make sure you have benefits. Make sure you're taken care of. But ultimately be happy.

She was like, I'm creative. I want to do what I want to do. And now she's here talking to me, talking to you and explaining, sometimes, you just have to follow your dreams.
