This podcast was born out of the experience of bearing witness to pain and suffering; my own, and those I counsel and coach. My life’s work requires holding sacred space for stories of hardship and trauma and facilitating a loving process of finding one's way back to wholeness, because much like the words of Robert Frost, “The best way out is always through.” How I Made It Through is offered as a survival guide of sorts; both as inspiration and encouragement to speak our truth, feel our feelings and share our unique and unifying stories of struggle, strife, and the emotional and spiritual transformation that often occurs. This podcast openly talks about the hard stuff: things like depression, loneliness, grief, anxiety, shame, betrayal, and anger. It is premised on the belief that when we acknowledge and honor our feelings - when we tell our stories - they can serve as the invitation to our healing and liberation, and more deeply unite us in our shared humanity. In each episode, our guests bravely share their own stories of struggle, revealing the life-changing lessons they've learned along the way. Each story serves to amplify these lessons, nudging each one of us closer to our own path of self-discovery, self-compassion, and - ideally - a path that increases our capacity to experience joy, courage and connection.

David also shared his unique perspective on the passing of loved ones and the messages they leave behind. He communicated messages from two recently passed individuals, Stacey and Suzy, to their loved ones. These messages provided comfort and assurance that they are at peace and still present in spirit.
David also discussed the concept of soul contracts and how they are negotiable. He explained that while we agree to certain life experiences before we are born, how we navigate these experiences is up to us.
Overall, this episode was filled with spiritual wisdom and comforting messages. Whether you're interested in the spiritual realm or seeking solace in the wake of a loved one's passing

In this week's episode, I have the honor of hosting recurring guest, Richard Martini. The conversation starts with him beginning to explain the origin story of his latest book (which is phenomenal, btw!): "The Greatest Story Never Told; as Told by Jesus and Those Who Knew Him, but then we segue (and I really mean segue...). Rich turns the tables on me (with my permission, of course): he facilitates a journey, starting with the famous lyric; "Picture yourself on a boat on a river", which leads to all sorts of unexpected twists and turns as his questions connect me with my Divine Council. The experience is unlike anything I have ever had before. Stay with me loyal listeners - I know it's a departure, but at the very least, a very interesting one. Stuff that emerges is wild and wonderful and keeps me wondering; is this me or is this my spirit guide(s) coming through? Honestly, I think there are moments of both!

In today’s episode, I interview Pamela Cummins, a dream expert and spiritual growth coach who enables clients to understand the meaning of their dreams, accelerate their personal and spiritual growth and for some, connect to intuition and psychic capacity in the process. While we sleep, the conscious mind is quieted and the innate wisdom and creativity of our unconscious minds are set free - sending us messages and metaphors - and even sometimes appearances from departed loved ones that we would be wise to pay more attention to. This episode is so much fun - she took one of my dreams and in a matter of minutes, helped me to illuminate a connection I had yet to make - it was so cool!

In this week' pause for reflection, I revisit the concept of "trance"; a framework for the experience of defaulting into thinking, feeling and believing that is shaped by fear. Relatable examples being: you are in the "trance of scarcity" or the "trance of unworthiness".
With this in mind, I share my reflections on the amazing power of the imagination and its potent capacity to bring us up close and personal with the wonderment and creativity of the inner child; it is the inner child within each of us who is most aligned with the limitlessness of our soul and the energy that effortlessly connects us closer to love and possibility.

Our guest today is Martha Blair Heymann. Martha has been an advocate of the dying conversation since the death of her late husband in 1993. She was drawn to becoming a certified Lay Chaplain for a children’s hospital, which evolved into training as a Grief Coach years later, and not long afterward, as an End of Life Doula with the International End of Life Doula Association.
She is a death educator and facilitator of Death Over Dinner Game Nights, a writer, a self-proclaimed bad but enthusiastic ceramic artist, and holds dear music by Fleetwood Mac, Seals & Crofts, Nanci Griffith and Carly Simon.
In today’s conversation, we explore her experiences supporting family and friends of those close to death, as well as profound insights about the dying process.

In this episode of How I Made It Through, host Kristin Taylor sits down with Martha Heymann, an end of life doula who has been advocating for the dying conversation since the death of her late husband in 1993. Martha's journey led her to become a certified lay chaplain for Children's Hospital, a grief coach, and eventually an end of life doula with the International End of Life Doula Association. She is also a Deaf educator, facilitator at death over dinner game nights, a writer, and a ceramic artist.
Key Discussion Points:
The Role of an End of Life Doula: Martha explains that an end of life doula provides non-medical, emotional, and holistic spiritual death education. They offer support and planning from the moment of diagnosis, helping families understand when to introduce hospice for the comfort and care of their loved ones.
Martha's Personal Journey: Martha shares her personal experience of losing her husband while being a new mother to twin boys. This experience led her to volunteer at a hospital, which eventually evolved into her becoming a hospital chaplain and later an end of life doula.
Death Over Dinner Game Nights: Martha discusses the concept of death over dinner game nights, an initiative that combines two different concepts to create a safe space for people to discuss death, dying, and grief. The aim is to normalize the conversation around death and provide a platform for people to share their thoughts and fears.
Legacy Projects: Martha shares an example of a legacy project, an initiative where the dying person leaves something behind for their loved ones. This can be an interview, a piece of writing, or anything that the person wishes to be remembered by.
The Dying Process: Martha gives a poignant account of the dying process from the perspective of an end of life doula. She talks about the importance of creating a comforting environment for the dying person, filled with their favorite sounds, smells, and memories.
The Importance of Language in Grief: Martha stresses the importance of using the right language when consoling someone who is grieving. Instead of using generic phrases, she encourages people to express their feelings honestly and offer specific ways in which they can support the grieving person.
Self-Care for End of Life Doulas: Martha discusses the importance of self-care for end of life doulas. She emphasizes the need for meditation, journal writing, and quiet time to process the intense experiences they are exposed to.
This episode provides a deep and compassionate insight into the work of end of life doulas and the importance of creating a safe and comforting space for people to navigate their grief.
In this week's pause for reflection, I share my thoughts on soul types, fears and our relationship to risk aversion, asking, "What are you drawn to do/be?" and how might seeing your life as a game help you move past your fear?

When it comes to therapy, coaching and so many other modalities for emotional and psychological healing, we always talk about "healing our inner child" or the "wounded" inner child. What if we had that backwards? What if it wasn't the child who was wounded, but instead, so very intact, while it is our adult self who needs to be rescued by our inner child? Tune in as I meander this week about the framework of healing the inner child and how our capacity for wonder and imagination are our greatest sources for both emotional healing and connection to spirit.

In my second interview with Franco Romero, I pull no punches in delving deeply into his assertions that we have the capacity to experience "heaven on earth" - and moreover, that this capacity (or awakening) will be taking place within the coming decade! Talk about a mind-bending and paradigm exploding conversation! Since his NDE as an infant and subsequently becoming a what is known as a "walk-in", Franco has seen and been told the Truth of who we really are. With great courage, kindness and conviction he opens up about concepts like 5th dimension consciousness, the importance of faith, the path towards awakening and yes, even his knowledge of the life of Jesus. This is one episode you are not going to want to miss!

Today’s guest, Franco Romero was an infant when he had a near death experience that would change his life forever — enabling him to receive messages from a collective consciousness he calls Caleb. With this communication, Franco would face many trials and tribulations as he grappled with his spiritual identity leading him on an inner quest for the Truth regarding his purpose here on earth and humanity’s destiny with its own Awakening!

This week, I explore the concept of trance - of finding ourselves caught in disempowered beliefs about our lives; the trance of unworthiness, the trance of self-doubt, of fear, of scarcity. What if, as my guests are sharing, we signed up for this and what if we truly believed that we are being divinely supported? What if we could trust that things are moving towards our most benevolent outcome? What would be different in your life? There's a lot to unpack there and in this episode, that's exactly what I (begin) to do.

In a world that far too easily activates the stress response (think low vibration), it's so important to be intentional about connecting to joy. The energy of joy not only feels great, but it also raises our vibration so that we can live closer to Love Consciousness, as well as in deeper connection to our Spirit Guides (think manifesting your soul's mission). In this week's Pause for Reflection, I share how to do so with a quick exercise. Enjoy!

The energy of joy not only feels great, but it also raises our vibration so that we can live closer to Love Consciousness, as well as in deeper connection to our Spirit Guides (think manifesting your soul's mission). In this week's Pause for Reflection, I share how to do so with a quick exercise. Enjoy!
Amber Smith has a very important story to tell. A story set in a specific time, place, circumstances and culture, where her unique depth, resilience and connection to spirit aligned to see her through what can only be described - at the very least - as difficult. In today’s episode, Amber shares how her relationship with her mother - after her death - liberated her from familial patterns of trauma that kept her feeling like an outsider and always just within arm’s length of acceptance and love. Through it all, she has learned what it means to be a cycle breaker and she has learned how to love in the face of pain. Mostly, though, she has learned how to reclaim her love for herself, her connection to spirit and in so doing, how to truly forgive.

In today’s episode you will meet David Hanzel who has been able to sense, see, and hear spirit from a very young age. After a Near Death Experience (NDE) as an adult, he had dedicated his life to the service to Spirit, giving them a voice to tell their stories and deliver their messages to their loved ones. With this, he has been able to help others to understand and validate that there is a life after death and how to proceed on their life's journey with the help from the otherside.

This week I share my thoughts on the concept of time, letting go of loved ones and exploring moving through grief by experiencing loss through the lens of nostalgia when our despair feels overwhelming (as inspired by Richard Martini and Jennifer Shaffer). As usual, I talk about soul contracts, love and the importance of being present to the amazing ride that is our lives!

This week’s guest is Judy Sharp. Judy had a successful corporate career before moving to Portugal, where her own spiritual journey began. Having trained as a psychotherapist, she has now worked in the UK for over twenty-five years, successfully helping thousands of clients with a broad range of issues finally heal in ways that typical therapy could not through the use of past life regression. In today’s episode, Judy shares the depth of wisdom and insight that comes from both her own healing from past life traumas, as well as facilitating past life healing with her clients. I have no doubt the stories she shares in this fascinating episode will enthrall, delight and amaze you, as they did me.

Today, in Part Two, our guest, Wendy Rose Williams shares about meeting the soul mate with whom she had contracted to 'wake her up spiritually' - leading her to discover Dr. Michael Newton’s work in the book 'Journey of Souls.' These two events in tandem triggered a profound spiritual awakening for her which then led to a wild ride between herself and her soul mate to resolve their 21 shared past lives. Wendy has experienced stunning physical & emotional breakthroughs from her own past-life regressions & other healing work, including releasing a decades long battle with debilitating daily chronic pain and mobility issues. Because of the remarkable quality of life improvement she experienced, she was inspired to help others do the same, by releasing the pain, anxiety, depression & other energy that no longer serves them.

In this week's Pause for Reflection, I share some high level thoughts on the difference between toxic positivity and the need and desire to raise your vibration. I share the importance of finding safety in the nervous system, emotional regulation, processing difficult emotions as well as choosing what we want to feel and believe and connect to, once we have allowed ourselves to feel as we learn to honor feelings as a critical part of learning what we are here to learn.

In this week’s episode, I get to introduce you to Jeannie Crowell. Jeannie brings a depth of character: in heart, mind and spirit. I experience her as a courageous explorer of the landscape of human psychology, neuroscience and spirituality - this is evidenced not only in the body of work she created over her career as a therapist, coach and business owner, but also in how she engages all aspects of who she is in this lifetime. In this week’s episode, she shares how from a young age, she somehow knew that life was not what it appeared to be on its surface. Although as a child she did not have words for this, as she grew older and survived episodes of trauma, she also had a number of profound spiritually transformative experiences - particular while in the wilderness - that both comforted and informed her awareness that we are never alone and that ultimately, love serves as the one reliable truth from which to source her life.

In this week’s episode, I explore the question “What if the universe were rigged in your favor?” This question serves as the jumping off place from which I share my thoughts on connection with spirit, authenticity, self-love and finding signs and evidence of support and love all around us (and often where we least expect it). If indeed we are moving towards a collective awakening, what part are we committed to playing and how can we become more aligned with our soul’s contract?
In today’s episode, you will meet Isabeau “Beau” Maxwell, one of the leading spiritual coaches in intuitive development today. Beau will share what her guides are saying is in store for 2023 (as well as a bit about 2024 and 2025!). She will also tell her story of how as a self-described Type A woman, deeply committed to her career track, scientific materialism, and pragmatism above all else, was blindsided by spirit showing up and how this changed not only the trajectory of her life but what she knows to be true about why we’re here and our connection to the afterlife. She also shares what her guides have taught her about understanding our life’s blueprint and how to begin to develop psychic abilities. Beau brings deep channeled knowledge and personal understanding to the field of spirituality. She has helped people connect to their authentic, natural intuitive abilities for over 15 years. She is the founder of the award-winning intuitive development course, The SAGE Method, the author of the best-selling book Cracking Open: Adventures of a Reluctant Medium, and the creator of the popular online community, The SAGE Circle. Today's guest is Richard Martini, an award-winning American film director, producer, screenwriter and freelance journalist. Heads up, this conversation is wild and wonderful, so buckle up! Rich has made quite a name for himself in exploring and accessing the afterlife (or what he refers to as the “flipside”). In his latest and 10th book, “Divine Councils in the Afterlife”, Rich shares transcripts of the many conversations people have had with their “divine councils”(more commonly referred to as “spirit guides”). These conversations are fascinating! “Flipside” was his debut non-fiction book. The documentaries “Flipside and Talking to Bill Paxton” and “Hacking the Afterlife” are distributed by Gaia TV and Amazon Prime. His books include “Flipside: A Tourists Guide to the Afterlife”: “Further Adventures in the Flipside volumes one and two” and “Hacking the Afterlife” which have all moved to #1 in their genres on Kindle and Amazon. He also wrote “Backstage Pass to the Flipside”, “Talking to the Afterlife with Jennifer Shaffer” and “Architecture of the Afterlife”. I came to learn of Rich from his always riveting podcast, “Hacking the Afterlife with Jennifer Shaffer”.

In this week’s Pause for Reflection, I share my experiment and experience with channeling my departed father: Yes, I was able to “hear” his voice, but more so, I came to experience more of a knowing which I am coming to understand is called claircognizance. What did he “say”?... Well, has anyone ever heard of “wave particles" (I had not)? Apparently, that’s what my dad is learning about on the “flipside” and that was the message he wanted me to hear. I share what I did to achieve this state of openness and my reflections about “coming out of the closet” in sharing this part of my life publicly.

This week's Pause for Reflection is real and it is incredibly raw: I ask my guests to be vulnerable in the sharing of how they make it through challenges, and so this week, I am doing the same.
Things have been rough behind the scenes in my own life as I weather "the long goodbye" (as dementia has been called). I share a bit about the week that was for me as a part time caregiver for my mom - sharing the ups and downs of the journey and how I am attempting to learn to love in the face of pain. Thank you for listening.

In next week’s episode, I interview Dr. Matthew McKay Ph.D. who has learned to channel his son, Jordan, who crossed over to the other side fourteen years ago. The conversation is so fascinating and so inspiring - please make sure to tune in for some powerful messages from the spirit world. The one message, however, that I will share in advance of the episode is this; “We are here to learn how to love in the face of pain”. This landed in a place in me that knew it to be true. In today’s meanderings, I share my thoughts on that statement as well as the complexity of love itself.

In this week’s Pause for Reflection, I will be talking about politics; how could I not? But, I will be talking about it from an emotional and spiritual perspective. I have strong opinions (and they do not include being a fan of Trump’s — you have been forewarned). I share thoughts on why anger matters, why it is so easy to have compassion and empathy for like-minded people, and how important it is to explore empathy for those with whom we have radically different opinions. I explore the difference between old souls and young souls and what it is we might be here to learn because I keep hearing that our souls chose this time in history. What would it mean if we were to “climb a wall of empathy” and might that be an important part of how we find our way through? All questions and no answers, but the questions are often the most important place to start.

Today’s guest is Mona Sobhani, PhD. Mona is a cognitive neuroscientist, researcher, and author with over 15 years of experience.
Recently, as she will explain in today’s show, she has become interested in consciousness, transformative technology, and in exploring how science and spirituality can be bridged together.
All of this is explored in great detail in her most recent book Proof of Spiritual Phenomena: A Neuroscientist's Discovery of the Ineffable Mysteries of the Universe.
In her book, Mona tells the story of her transformation from a diehard scientific materialist to an open-minded spiritual seeker, and what she describes as “the excruciating identity crisis that ensued”. She describes it as a “ book about my search for both scientific and personal “proof” that there’s more to the Cosmos. An unseen dimension to life. That the mysteries of human experience go far beyond what the present scientific paradigm can comprehend. It leaves open the possibility of a participatory, meaningful Universe.”

In today's episode, I share the pivot I am making in both the premise of the show, as well as those I interview. Please have a listen as I share how and why I am moving from a place of playing it more safely in Season One, to living more courageously in my truth in Season Two.
Dr. Lori Hollins is a seasoned medical professional with over 25 years of research, practice, educational, and administrative leadership in the obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and andrology disciplines.
She is embarking on new territory as a film student at Second City Film School to tell stories that matter through comedy and humor.
As a creativity coach she helps professional women in transition in their lives and careers, re-discover or discover a new mindset and meaning to live their dream life, using the tools of comedy, humor, imagination, improv, and storytelling.
As a result of a blood clot, Lori’s life was transformed, teaching her that the block was not only physical, but emotional and spiritual too. She learned to live with greater courage, saying yes to all of her gifts; those of an artist, a storyteller, a comedian and that of a woman who speaks her truth unapologetically.

We talk about empathy a lot, much like we talk about mindfulness a lot. But what are they, really and why do they matter? In this week’s meanderings, I share some of my thoughts on how and why self-empathy is under-rated and the power of practicing it with greater skill and frequency (hint: it’s about moving away from the ego and moving towards greater forgiveness and healing). We are here to learn how to love; self-empathy is a perfect place to practice.

Today's musings are all about forgiveness: some top of mind thoughts surrounding the wise words of Jennifer Wallace who recently said to me; "All forgiveness is self-forgiveness". Have a quick listen as I share my thoughts on the importance of self-love, unconditional self- acceptance, spiritual bypassing and emotional regulation as they relate to the commitment and practice of forgiveness. And, listen all the way to the end when I share more about what you can expect from Season Two. It provides a bit of a courageous turn for me, but a very aligned and exciting one!

Today’s guest is Tovah Lalla. Tovah has spent the last two years going through an intense spiritual awakening, and healing her core wounds. She says that it is her mission to share what she’s learned with others in hopes that she can help them let go of their baggage and be their most authentic selves.
I met Tovah a few months back when she interviewed me as a guest on her podcast “Get in, We're going Healing!” Please listen to her story of unraveling and healing childhood wounds and unconscious patterns that she felt trapped in - patterns that increased her suffering while they sabotaged her relationship to herself and others. She speaks about being a “generational curse breaker” and how she poured herself into her own healing and why she is so eager to share what she is learning with others.

This week’s ‘Pause for Reflection’ is brought to you by the word “Introjection”. In listening to so many stories — those of my clients and those of my podcast guests — one theme is recurrent: the families and circumstances we grow up in shape who we are and how we perceive the world. When there is a history of trauma, we can all too easily develop a sense of self defined by our wounds. In today's musings, I invite you to use the concept of “introjection” to shift the lens a bit. I invite you to notice how the child you once were showed a unique intelligence, creativity and yes, brilliance in adapting. I encourage you to use this growing awareness to care for yourself as an adult with greater self-compassion and unconditional love. You are not just what happened to you — you are so much more.
Today’s guest is Jesse Trout. Jesse is a Transformational Coach and Facilitator specializing in supporting clients in uncovering their life's purpose. One of the first things you might notice about Jesse is his authenticity. What you see is what you get and he pulls no punches, which is a great quality when you have an important story to tell, and boy does he ever. In today’s episode, Jesse will share his story of recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction - you will hear all the highs and lows, but more importantly, you will hear the lessons learned. Jesse will share how he began to learn who he actually is, and what he is here to do as a human being on this earth - he will share what it took for him to get honest with himself and to have the courage to be vulnerable about what he was going through. Today he will share with you exactly what he went through and how he made it through and more importantly, continues to make it through every day.

Today’s episode provides a brief pause in guest interviewing. Instead, I’m offering something a bit different; every other week I will be sharing some of my own thoughts and reflections in between guest interviews. They will be much shorter and very unrehearsed.
This weeks ‘pause for reflection’ focuses on the temptation to compare and what I am learning about myself in this relationship to this temptation (i.e. “Am I managing my pain and suffering as well as they are?” ‘Why am I struggling to stay positive and resilient?” yada, yada, yada).
I am also preparing for Season 2 which is coming soon… There are some exciting changes on the way! As always, thank you for listening!

All of my episodes are special to me, but this one is in a very unique way. You see, without my guest, Adam Baruh, this podcast would not exist. Adam is the founder and producer of EIQ Media and without his head for business and heart for making a difference in the world, How I Made It Through never would have been dreamed of, let alone executed with the care and professionalism that he beautifully orchestrates behind the scenes. Adam and I met in March of 2021 when he agreed to be my client. He was a dream client for me because of his commitment to growth, integrity, courage and healing that will forever move me. In our work together, Adam uncovered a painful episode from his childhood that changed how he saw himself and what he consciously and unconsciously believed to be true. With great courage and candor, Adam explores with us what a turning point this was for him and how one simple clarity in the definition of the words “guilt” versus “shame” served as a powerful catalyst for profound healing. In today’s episode, Adam openly shares his healing journey and how it led to a deep commitment to redefining leadership and what truly goes into creating a healthy workplace culture.

Today’s guest is Shayna Renee Hammond. Shayna is the Founder and CEO of Lead for Liberation and IndigoWomen.
Shayna and I met a couple of months ago when we were both guests on Dr. LaMarr Darnell Shields podcast, Sound Balming when he hosted the 2nd Annual Empower U International Women’s Summit.
When she showed up on that panel - when she shared her mind and her heart, her wisdom and her spiritual connection and depth, I just knew that I wanted to learn more about her and learn more from her.
Lead For Liberation is a leadership development organization dedicated to guiding organizations, school districts, foundations, and communities to demystify and operationalize liberatory cultures.
Inspired by the success of L4L and her calling to raise global consciousness, Shayna founded IndigoWomen, a coaching and consulting practice dedicated to creating spaces, methods, and conditions for Black women in leadership to thrive. In this capacity, Shayna coaches individuals and groups of Black women leaders from around the globe in a spiritually-inspired and research-based coaching methodology created by and for Black women.
In today’s episode you will hear her story of returning to alignment with her values and her intuition as a business owner and leader when she found herself unexpectedly falling out of love with her work. You will hear what it took for her to find her way again and how that truly transformed everything: her connection to herself, her connection to spirit and her commitment to her mission to lead from a place of love and liberation.

In today’s episode, you will meet Jennifer Wallace. Jennifer is a neuro-somatic intelligence coach for brain based wellness, as well as a trauma informed psychedelic integration coach. Her podcast, Trauma Rewired Is an extension of her belief that healing behavior change and then the life you desire are entirely possible through the foundation of a safe nervous system. Jennifer shares how for her, a diagnosis of breast cancer served as the portal to her awakening and healing. She candidly shares how she came to understand the dangerous role that stress and trauma played in her life over the years, and how she not only learned the tools to become more regulated herself, but how she has made it her life’s work to share this vital information and practices with others. Moreover, Jennifer shares her belief that we are spirits in human form. We are spirits who take on a 3D human body for which the nervous system serves as the operating system. She shares how this operating system controls every single one of our life experiences - from respiration and digestion, all the way to our ability to experience joy and connection to others. With this framework, she teaches her clients easy and simple daily practices - drills that can help us to finally feel regulated, balanced and most essentially, safe. It is only when we experience safety in our nervous systems that we can ideally perform from a place of wholeness to all of who we are.

Rocío Pèrez, international speaker, best selling author, inclusion and diversity thought leader and trainer, believes that she was built for hard times and that the inconceivable blows that life threw her way, made her tough - made her resilient. We invite you to listen to this remarkable story of hope and endurance as Rocío shares with Kristin how she made her way from horrific child abuse and neglect to being a 12 year old runaway...to soon after becoming a mother at 15. What she learned along her journey, she shares, was that she, and she alone gets to choose what she believes is possible, not what others tell her: whether that was her education, parenting, career or even her health. She embraced that ultimately, she was responsible for her own healing through taking courageous action and stepping out of her comfort zone, knowing that if she was not scared, she was not learning and growing and leading the way for others to do the same.

TodayÕs guest is Johnnie Davis - an inspirational speaker, entrepreneur, success coach and the author of the empowering memoir and Amazon best seller, ÒIÕm Still Here; From Heart Failure to Heart of a Champion.Ó At the age of 34, a fit, healthy and athletic Johnnie unexpectedly came down with sudden, confusing and progressive medical symptoms that left him debilitated. When he finally arrived at the emergency room, he was told that had he waited just twenty-four hours, he would have expired. With no family history or any lifestyle predictors, Johnnie learned that he had congenital heart failure and would be lucky to make it to 50. In 2012 he became a sudden cardiac arrest survivor - having been clinically dead for 16 minutes. His near death experience or NDE, taught him not only what it means to die, but what it means to live more fully. He now lives without any fear of death - having heard the words of God - and is purposeful in his energy, focus and time, living by the creed; ÒIf it does not evolve me, it will not involve me.Ó I am so excited to elevate his story and in so doing, elevate our gratitude for the precious time we have on this planet - reminding us to live it with a heartfelt and soulful appreciation for what really matters, as well as minimizing any fears we might harbor as we all one day face our own death.
In today’s episode, Amanda Sobey shares how she became permanently disfigured by a disease called Lymphedema and how she felt traumatized in learning that there was no cure. She candidly opens up about her journey of living in denial of this chronic and progressive disease - one that caused her leg to become engorged and puffy as the daily pain and discomfort increased, revealing what it felt like to endure feeling deformed, ugly and weak and knowing that her life had suddenly and without warning or consent, been forever drastically changed.
Her journey has been a long one, but through learning to channel her indomitable will in the right direction, it has been one of increasing victories. On top of being a single mom of two, she is a full-time fitness trainer and licensed nutritionist and has devoted her life to helping people with LE and other underlying conditions transform their lives by making gradual changes in their lifestyle. Amanda worked tirelessly to learn all that she employs today in her own life to stay healthy and fit and has dedicated her life to sparing others from the years of agony, depression and despair that she had to walk through to arrive at where she is today.
For more information, you can visit her website at www.AmandaSobey.com or find her on social media @am.sobey on Facebook or Instagram.

In today’s episode, I get the honor of introducing you to Melissa Chureau. Melissa is both a lawyer and a mindfulness coach. What I love about her story is that in so many ways and for so many people, I imagine it will be quite relatable. Unlike the other guests on the show thus far, Melissa is not sharing an epic story of loss or trauma. When conceiving of this show, I very much wanted to include stories of ‘making it through’ that normalize the stories of simply being human, which on most days is hard enough. What I hope for as the host, is for my listeners to recognize themselves in the stories, and in so doing, feel inspired to care for themselves with greater awareness, insight, care and compassion.
Melissa Chureau provides just that roadmap. She opens up about feeling like a perennial outsider in her formative years, and how the experience of unwarranted self-doubt — otherwise known as imposterism — showed up for her and sometimes still does (as it does for most of us). I invite you to listen as she elegantly articulates how learning about and practicing mindfulness has allowed her to respond, rather than react when imposterism surfaces in her life today.

Today’s story is particularly personal and meaningful to me. As someone who has lived with Lymphedema for 25 years, it is a profound honor to introduce you to Cam Ayala. In this episode, we will share what Lymphedema is and Cam will open up about his journey of living with this chronic and progressive disease. He will share his story of discovering how he had primary lymphedema at the age of 11, how he endured as a teenager, college student and navigated the disease into young adulthood — surviving multiple infections and 16 surgeries — and finally, how his “lymphedema coming out experience” was edited and distorted publicly for the sake of a storyline on the reality TV show, The Bachelorette.
However, the real story is far more inspiring and compelling. The real story is of a man who, alongside the Lymphedema Education & Research Network (LE&RN), has committed his life to the Mission to fight all lymphatic diseases, to have better treatment, education and research and ultimately, to one day find a cure.

TodayÕs story is particularly personal and meaningful to me. As someone who has lived with Lymphedema for 25 years, it is a profound honor to introduce you to Cam Ayala. In this episode, we will share what Lymphedema is and Cam will open up about his journey of living with this chronic and progressive disease. He will share his story of discovering how he had primary lymphedema at the age of 11, how he endured as a teenager, college student and navigated the disease into young adulthood Ñ surviving multiple infections and 16 surgeries Ñ and finally, how his Òlymphedema coming out experienceÓ was edited and distorted publicly for the sake of a storyline on the reality TV show, The Bachelorette. However, the real story is far more inspiring and compelling. The real story is of a man who, alongside the Lymphedema Education & Research Network (LE&RN), has committed his life to the Mission to fight all lymphatic diseases, to have better treatment, education and research and ultimately, to one day find a cure.
At Olympic Stadium in Montreal, in his second start after coming back from cancer surgery (that involved removing 50% of his deltoid muscle), Giants southpaw pitcher, Dave Dravecky suffers a broken arm. Dave collapses to the ground and clutches his left arm in severe pain after throwing a wild pitch to Tim Raines. This will be his final pitch. In 1991, he went on to have his arm, shoulder and the left side of his collarbone amputated in order to spare his life from the spread of cancer. In enduring the amputation and the loss of his childhood dream, Dave was to discover his real purpose in life.
In this episode, Dave shares how losing his arm and the dream of baseball became a platform to share hope with the suffering around the world. Tune in for what is a candid and inspiring story of vulnerability, discovery and faith when a man lets go of what he thought his life would be, to discover who he really is.

In today’s episode, you will hear Emily’s story. Her story unfolds as she eagerly awaited the arrival of her first baby, only to be laid off shortly before giving birth. With the loss of employment, all her best laid plans to provide financially for her family, allowing her spouse to stay home with their child, were unceremoniously dismantled.
Emily struggled with fears of financial scarcity and of disappointing others, and found herself spiraling into the depths of anxiety, depression and isolation. In this place of struggle, Emily did what was most unnatural for her to do — she asked for help. It was when she asked for help and then allowed herself to receive support and love that everything began to improve — totally shifting the trajectory of her life and how she moves through it.

In this episode, Amanda Marshall candidly shares her story of how rising to one of the highest positions in the field of law as U.S. Attorney for the State of Oregon, ultimately resulted in feeling as empty and disconnected as she had felt in her life. She shares how despite career achievement, public service, praise and accolades, her life descended into a cycle of addiction, duplicity and misery (all while looking the part in a “Brooks Brothers suit and pearls”). She openly reveals how unhealed childhood wounds, mental health issues and substance abuse shaped both her ascent, as well as her very public downward spiral, when the life she worked so hard to erect came crashing down around her. Amanda’s inspiring story is one of recovery, integration and healing. Now, on the other side, she offers it as a survival guide to the rest of us; highlighting hard-earned insights and the daily practices that sustain her and serve as examples of transforming wounds into wisdom.

In last week’s episode, Part 1 of Marla Levy’s story;Opening the Heart to Compassion, Marla shared her story of battling complications from a congenital heart defect. She shared that during the course of her hospital stay and the fight for her life, she experienced more than one Spiritually Transformative Experience. She explained how her heart was opened to a level of compassion that before she seldom knew. If you have not listened to last week’s episode, I highly encourage you to do so.
In Part Two, The Gift of Presence, Marla recounts how she struggled for 6 weeks simply to breathe and how this fundamental and agonizing struggle rewired her brain's capacity to stay in the present moment. She shares in detail what she learned and what it is like to actively live in the present moment. She considers herself lucky to have fully adopted the practice of “living like she’s dying” and hopes that others can begin to do the same. What she knows is that when we do, we radically and profoundly lessen fear, while increasing our capacity for gratitude and the appreciation of the beauty that is always around us.
In 2013, due to complications from a congenital heart defect, Marla Levy had to undergo three open heart surgeries in just 16 days. After her second surgery, her heart didn’t resume beating on its own for almost a week. During that time, she was put on a machine that takes over the function of the heart and lungs. Unfortunately, one of the common side effects is acute kidney failure. Marla’s kidneys shut down, and she was placed on dialysis 24 hours a day. Battling triple organ failure and fighting an infection, Marla was put into an induced coma as her family and friends prayed for her and as her medical team fought to keep her alive. And, stay alive she did.
On the other side of this experience Marla is forever changed. She did not just stay alive. Rather, she learned how to truly be alive. During her time in the hospital, she experienced more than one “Spiritually Transformative Experience”; experiences that profoundly shifted her awareness, her priorities and her appreciation for the purpose of her life. Today, Marla’s priorities in life are deeply shaped by a commitment to extending compassion to all those she meets – particularly if she senses they are suffering.
